Ashwin’s all-rounding performance clinched India a win in Chepauk test

Ravichandran Ashwin with his impressive century and a fifer grasped a victory for the Indian cricket team in the Chepauk test. As per the IND vs BAN 2024 schedule, the first test of the series was scheduled to be played between September 19 and 23 at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.

This test series was very crucial for both teams as these two tests will form part of the 2023–2025 ICC World Test Championship.

The test between IND vs BAN grabbed the attention of many as India was playing their longest format nearly after a gap of seven months. India played their previous test series against England in January – March 2024 which India won by 4-1.

In the first test between IND vs BAN, the hosts displayed an impressive performance with both bat and ball. Especially, Indian allrounders Ashwin and Jadeja made an exceptional inning with both and ball.

Speaking of the match, winning the toss Bangladesh decided to bowl first where Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma opened the inning. India was expected to deliver an outstanding performance in the first inning but Hasan Mahmud collapsed the Indian top order by dismissing Rohit, Gill and Kohli within the first hour of the game.

Though the hosts lost their top three wickets at the earliest, Jaiswal and Pant made a 62-run stand, preventing India from falling cheaply. Hasan Mahmud in the 26th over struck again and dismissed Pant for 36.

Following Pant’s dismissal, the well-settled batter Yashasvi Jaiswal too lost his wicket to Nahid Rana after scoring a half-century. While every Indian cricket fan was left heartbroken, Jadeja and Ashwin made a historic stand for the seventh wicket and scored a whopping 199 runs.

During the process, Ravichandran Ashwin secured his fifth test century by scoring 113 runs off 133 deliveries.

India scored 376 runs after losing all their wickets in the first inning. On the other hand, Bangladesh bowler Hasan Mahmud secured his second five-wicket haul in the test and became the first Bangladesh bowler to take a five-wicket haul in India.

Bangladesh made a struggling start in their first inning as they lost their first five wickets for 40 runs. Indian spearhead Bumrah opened the account for India by dismissing Shadman Islam in the very first over of the inning.

Akash Deep continued the momentum by dismissing Zakir Hasan(3) and Mominul(0) in the back-to-back deliveries of the ninth over. Siraj for his counterpart dismissed Bangladesh captain Shanto and loaded the pressure on the visitors.

Shakib and Litton Das started to build a partnership for the sixth wicket and gave some hope to the Bangladesh side. But Jadeja with his spin attack scattered the hope by dismissing Litton and Shakib in the back-to-back overs.

Following the dismissals, Bangladesh’s lower order collapsed like a deck of cards and managed to score 149 runs after losing all their ten wickets.

In the second inning, Indian key batters were expected to deliver a special knock but the Indian star batters failed abruptly. Jaiswal was dismissed for 10 runs while Rohit and Virat were dismissed for 5 and 17 runs respectively.

Following Virat’s dismissal, Gill and Pant made a 167-run stand which saw both batters securing their centuries. Later in a replay, it was revealed that Virat who was given an LBW dismissal, had a spike over his bat and a review could saved him from dismissing cheaply.

India declared the inning with a score of 287 while Bangladesh was given a target of 500 runs plus for the victory. Unlike their first inning, Bangladesh kick-started their second inning on a positive note and built 62 runs for the first wicket.

Bumrah broke the partnership by dismissing Zakir Hasan for 33 runs. On the other hand, Ashwin who scored a century in the first inning dismissed Shadman Islam for 35 runs.

Ravi Ashwin continued his momentum and went on to bag a couple of wickets by dismissing Mominul Haque(13) and Mushfiqur Rahim(13) before the stumps on Day 3. Notably, day three was concluded before the scheduled time owing to the bad lights.

On day 4 of the game, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan started to build a partnership and threatened India with their patient knocks. Rohit brought his henchman Ashwin to bowl the 52nd over while the offspinner struck in the very first over and dismissed Shakib Al Hasan for 25 runs.

Following Shakib’s dismissal, Bangladesh batters failed to withstand the Indian bowling attack and started to lose their wickets cheaply. Ashwin in the 28th over dismissed Mehidy Hasan Miraz for 8 and bagged his fifer.

With this fifer, Ashwin becomes the joint second-most(7) to bag a five-fer in the fourth innings of the tests alongside Warne and Muralidaran and only behind Rangana Herath’s 12. This will be the fourth instance for Ashwin to score a century and to bag a 5-fer in the same test and stand behind Ian Botham’s 5.

Adding pressure to the struggling side, Ravindra Jadeja in the 59th over dismissed Hossain Shanto for 82 runs and robbed the little bit of hope left in the visitors.

Ashwin in the 60th over dismissed Taskin Ahmed(5) and registered his sixth wicket. Ravindra Jadeja in the 63rd over dismissed Hasan Mahmud and put an end to Bangladesh’s struggle.

The visitors lost all their ten wickets for 234 runs and fell 280 runs short. India took a lead in the two-match test series with the win in the first game. The two sides will face off again on September 27 at Kanpur to play the second and last game of the test series.
