Ashwin joins 700 Wickets club, the third Indian after Kumble and Harbhajan

Through his excellent bowling spell on the opening day of the 1st Test match of West Indies Tour 2023 on the Caribbean Island, Ashwin enters 700 wicket club and becomes the third Indian player to do so.

Ashwin Joins 700 Wickets Club

The first day of the Test match in Dominica between India and West Indies proved to be the day for Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin where he made his 33rd five-wicket haul. The West Indian batters could not stand up to the bowling of Ashwin which broke through their resistance.

West Indies batsman proved to be no match for Ashwin’s spin on the second session of the day 1 match as he grabbed 4/ 49 which made the host’s situation very pathetic as they score 137 for eight.

Ashwin achieved a milestone after dismissing Alzarri Joseph for his third wicket. He joins the elite club for achieving 700 wickets in his career and becomes the third Indian after Anil Kumble (956) and Harbhajan Singh (711).

Later he dismissed Alick Athanaze who was in the debut of scoring 50 with three runs on reaching the milestone.  Ashwin achieves his records by getting the wickets of both father and son in his Test career when he dismissed Tagenarine on the opening day of the first test against West Indies.

Ashwin, who made his Test debut in Test debut in 2011 in New Delhi, had dismissed Tagenarine’s father Shivnarine Chanderpaul during his maiden appearance in the longest format.

Ashwin had dismissed Chanderpaul in the second innings of the Test match that happened 12 years back. Ashwin who had 474 Test wickets before this match, bowled Tangenarine and dismissed him, making him the fifth bowler to dismiss both father and son.

Chanderpaul’s father-son is been thrice on the list of the father and son duo dismissed by the same bowler. The other two bowlers are Australian Fast Bowler Mitchell Starc and South Africa off-spinner Simon Harmer who dismissed Chanderpaul.

It was due to the late retirement of Shivnarine Chanderpaul in 2015, while his son made his debut on the test last year.

On Nov 6, 2013, Ashwin gets Shivnarine Chanderpaul bowled in the 1st test match against West Indies. On July 12, 2023, Ashwin gets Tangerine Chanderpaul’s wicket by dismissing him in the 1st Test match on the West Indies tour. 10 years apart, Ashwin manages to dismiss both father and son.
