The uncertainty over Gujarat Titans has extended beyond the management as head coach Ashish Nehra and the franchise are set to part ways ahead of the IPL 2025 season. After Ricky Ponting stepped down from the DC head coach position, Nehra’s uncertainty as GT Head coach has been brought to attention.
IPL insiders suggest that the GT management having an administrative head based in the UK and some officials in Mumbai and Singapore, is considering a change in their coaching staff for the coming season.
This staff includes Vikram Solanki as the director of cricket, Ashish Nehra as the head coach, and Gary Kirsten as the mentor and batting coach during the team’s first three years.
Multiple factors might be cause for the planned changes, except their success in the maiden title win in 2022. They finished second in the IPL 2023 after being defeated by CSK in the finals.
However, Gary Kirsten has already left to join the Pakistan coaching setup up and there might be chances for Solanki to survive the happenings. He might seen visibly in the past seasons including the IPL 2023 finals, but wasn’t spotted by cameras in the 2024 season.
Regarding the speculation about a potential change in the Gujarat Titans’ management, for CVC to Torrent Pharma or the Adani Group. Any such transfer will likely have to wait until February next year.
Meanwhile, Kumar Sangakkara who has been currently involved with the head coach position at Rajasthan Royals, has been considered for the England white-ball head coach role.
This could draw Rahul Dravid in as a potential candidate to succeed the Sri Lankan legend. Dravid has previously coached the Jaipur franchise before joining the BCCI coaching setup.
“Well, I know my name has been mentioned for some reason, but there has not been any approach as such. I think the England white-ball job is an exciting prospect for anyone, but there are so many good candidates out there. I am very happy at the moment. The Rajasthan Royals experience has been very fulfilling and it has been a job I have really enjoyed over the last four years,” said Sangakkara.
When asked about Sangakkara joining the England coach setup, “There will be an interview process at some point but there is no shortlist as of now,” an ECB official said.
Until the appointment of the new head coach, Marcus Trescothick will be the interim head coach for next month’s ODI series against Australia at home.
