The second ODI between Afghanistan and Pakistan on Thursday concluded with the victory of Pakistan where Bangladeshi bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi made a controversial dismissal of Shadab Khan at the non-striker end.
AB de Villiers slams Pakistan journalist on Shadab Khan’s dismissal
Pakistan and Afghanistan are playing a three-match ODI in Sri Lanka, where Pakistan leads the series 2-0. The 2nd ODI match had a controversial moment where Shadab Khan was sent out by Fazalhaq Farooqi in the final over where Pakistan needed 11 runs from 6 balls. By the end, Pakistan had a stunning victory beating Afghanistan by 1 wicket at Hambantota.
Before bowling his last over in the innings, Farooqi saw Shadab Khan leaving the crease earlier and dismissed him via MANKAD. The bowler did not break any rules, but dismissing Shadab Khan in this way was considered as it was against the spirit of the game.
Bowlers used to warn the batters when they left the crease early before making an attempt for run out. Farooqi followed the rules on dismissing Shadab Khan as he tried to make a positive move for his side during the crucial period of the game.
But it was a total failure as Naseem Shah had two boundaries and sealed victory for his side. With this incident, a Pakistani cricket journalist complained about Shadab Khan’s run out.
He takes it to X (Twitter), “The commentator, probably HD Ackerman, said: ‘I don’t have a problem with Mankad, but why don’t teams do it in the 5th or 6th over of the innings? Why only towards the end of if? They just panic and they do it when they think it’s the only way to win the match’ Very valid point.”
AB de Villiers saw a post on X (Twitter) and responded to it. He said, “Cause batters only try to steal runs towards the back end of an innings.”
Pakistan is preparing for their third ODI against Afghanistan on August 26. A win in the third match will also see Pakistan reclaim the No.1 spot in the ICC Rankings.
