Aaron Finch has reckoned that Mitchell Marsh has played his last test match who was left out of the side for the final Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at Sydney Cricket Ground.
Marsh has not been included in the Australia squad for the Sri Lanka tests against Sri Lanka after Beau Webster’s excellent debut at SCG. All-rounder Cameron Green’s recovery from back surgery also means that no room for Marsh in the squad.
Aaron Finch believes Mitchell Marsh will find it difficult to get back into the side with not much test cricket left in the summer.
“I think it’ll be really difficult for Mitch to get back into the side now. There is not a huge amount of cricket left in this summer to force a case, with Cameron Green coming back in early March. For me, it’ll be unlikely (he ever plays again),” said Aaron Finch.
Mitchell Marsh had a poor run in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, aggregating only 73 runs in four tests. His best score of 47 runs came in the second innings of the Perth test.
The Australia squad for Sri Lanka tests sees seven spin bowling options including 21-year-old Cooper Connolly. Opener Nathan McSweeney lost his place during the BGT, has also been recalled to the squad, while Josh Inglis and Sean Abbott have retained their berths.
Steve Smith has been named as the captain in the absence of Pat Cummins who will not be available due to the birth of his second child.
The first match of the Sri Lanka tests will begin on January 29 at Galle International Stadium.
