India completed its West Indies tour recently with a defeat in the T20I series 3-2 and the India side will be featuring a Three- match T20I series against Ireland before Asia Cup 2023.
Shubman and Ishan’s non-selection for Ireland tour
India is scheduled to play a total of 3 T20I matches on India’s tour of Ireland which begins on August 18, with the first match being held in Malahide.
BCCI announced the Indian squad for the T20 series against Ireland on July 31 where young players like Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal were sidelined from the tour.
Shubman and Yashasvi had a massive score on their partnership with 165 runs in the fourth T20I between India and West Indies on Saturday.
Having pushed to bowl first, Hardik Pandya’s side was able to fold the host for 178/8 in 20 overs and eventually chased the target with three overs to spare. But this pair was not impressive in the 5th T20I where India lost by 8 wickets.
Now India will be preparing for the next assignment against Ireland. India’s tour will feature the return of India’s pacer Jasprit Bumrah who will lead India’s side for three T20Is. The Indian management has named young players squad to face Ireland.
Former India opener Aakash Chopra expressed his displeasure with the duo’s absence and stated that only performing in the IPL will not help Team India to win the T20 World Cup.
“I think we’re not taking T20Is seriously. Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill are not going to Ireland. I can understand people needing breaks. But from now till the T20 World Cup, we have 14 matches.
Don’t think about IPL, everyone performs in IPL but that doesn’t mean we would win the World Cup. In fact, the only time we won it was when IPL wasn’t even there,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
What are the chances of Ishan playing in the Asia Cup if Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul are fit. You could’ve played against Ireland, your first match in Asia Cup is in September, you had ample gap.
I don’t think anyone’s thinking about it. These are youngsters, they don’t need much rest I believe,” he added.
Ishan Kishan does not have a great overall T20I record, aggregating 686 runs in 29 innings at an average of 24.50 and a strike rate of 121.63. He has experienced the worst in the T20I format this year, managing 97 runs in eight innings at an average of 12.12 and a strike rate of 89.81.
India’s squad for Ireland series has the primary players who will be representing the side in the Asian Games.
