“A Lot of the Decisions” Abhishek Nayar Reveals Reason on Gill’s Drop for Boxing Day Clash

India’s assistant coach Abhishek Nayar has revealed reason for Shubman Gill’s drop from the playing Xl in the fourth test of Border Gavaskar Trophy.

India couldn’t wait to get Shubman Gill back into their playing Xl after the youngster missed the series opener at Perth. Two tests later, the batter didn’t find a place in the team.

India decided to go back with captain Rohit Sharma to open in the line up. With KL Rahul has been their best batter on tour, he has slated to come in at No.3 India could have moved Gill down to No.6 but they decided to pack their Xl with all-rounders instead.

“A lot of the decisions when they are made and the process of it being made, the communication is always there, transparency is there. It’s obvious that, we felt, looking at the pitch, that Washy in the bowling attack, will give us a variation, especially towards the end once the ball gets old.”

“Post 50 overs, we felt that was an area we wanted to get better at. We felt Washy could give us that solidarity with Jaddu, given how Travis Head and Alex Carey were getting runs, so having an off-spinner provides us that,” said Nayar.

Gill missed the first test in Perth with a finger injury. He came back for the next one, the day night test in Adelaide, and though he looked solid in both innings he scored only 31 and 28 and fell cheaply for 1 chasing a wide half volley in his only innings in the Brisbane Test.

“Yes, Rohit will come up in the order, and more likely, he will open the innings. Unfortunately for him, just how things panned out, he had to miss out, and sometimes I just feel that for a young player, in a position like that, big day, he wants to make a mark, he understands that it’s the team’s requirement.”

“It’s unfortunate, but I wouldn’t say that he’s dropped per se; it’s just that he couldn’t find his place in this game,” he added.

Australia batted first and scored 311/6 runs by the end of stumps with Bumrah picked three wickets to restrict hosts dominance at Melbourne Cricket Ground.
