Apart from scripting unique records in the national team, MS Dhoni also etched his name in the IPL history book under various sections. MS Dhoni-led CSK to win 4 trophies so far in IPL which is the second highest after Mumbai Indians(5).
MS Dhoni who led the Indian cricket team to a new high announced his international retirement on August 15 2020. Right after his international retirement, the question over his IPL stint remains one of the most discussed topics ahead of every IPL season.
Though MSD never gave a straight statement about his IPL future fans used to frame/elaborate on the short answers he answered during the post-match presentation.
Last year(IPL 2022) MS Dhoni stepped down as the captain of the CSK where the Chennai-based franchise named Ravindra Jadeja as the new captain of the team. Owing to his inconsistency, R Jadeja was stripped off from the role and MS Dhoni was renamed as the captain for the remaining season.
During his captaincy stint, Jadeja captained 8 games and managed to win only 2 out of them.
MSD’s Statements Regarding His IPL 2024 Participation
Following a confusion in captaincy last season, MSD led the team this year as expected but his longevity as captain for the next season becomes doubtful.
Though many gave their view on MSD’s IPL career, no one can predict MSD’s next move. Dhoni who announced his international retirement as a surprise might make the same for his IPL career.
The speculation over his IPL retirement increases this time mainly because of his knee injury. Dhoni can be seen struggling with his knee injury on and off the field.
Since the start of the IPL 2023, MS Dhoni has hinted that this might be his last IPL whenever being asked about his participation in the next season.
“All said and done, it’s the last phase of my career, however long I play,” Dhoni had said CSK’s win over SRH last month.
At Eden Gardens, when CSK defeated KKR, the stadium was filled with yellow shirts and Dhoni’s chants has taken over.“They are trying to give me a farewell, so thanks a lot to the crowd,” Dhoni had said in the post-match presentation.
But when MSD was asked about the same in Lucknow he made a positive statement regarding his participation in next season. “Clearly, This wonderful swansong tour, your last. How are you enjoying it?” Danny Morrison had asked Dhoni at CSK’s match vs Lucknow Super Giants.
“You have decided it is my last IPL, not me,” Dhoni had replied.
Every year when asked about his IPL participation in the next year, MS Dhoni will make a strong statement but this year, MSD just said he has 8-9 months to decide.
Speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, Dhoni said, “I don’t know, I have 8-9 months to decide. I have ample time to decide. Why take that headache now? The auction is in December. I will always come to CSK.
I have been out of home since January, been practising since March, so we will see. I’ll always be there for CSK, where it’s playing or something outside.”

MSD is not retiring. He will try to play one more season for the love and support provided by the fans. That’s how he wants to say thank you to everyone. During the post-match presentation of the IPL 2023 finals, MSD said, “Still 7-8 months there and my body should support that as well”.
Will Dhoni Play Next IPL 2024 – Bravo Answers
While the speculations over his participation increases day by day one of his former teammate Dwayne Bravo made a positive statement to the question “Will Dhoni Play Next IPL 2024”.
Talking to Starsport, Dwayne Bravo, the bowling coach of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) said, “100 per cent Especially, with the Impact Player rule. It will keep prolonging his career,” while answering fans whether they will see Dhoni in IPL’s next edition.
“He bats really deep. I think the likes of Ajinkya Rahane and (Shivam) Dube— these guys make a huge difference. You don’t require much from MS. But he has the ability to keep his calm when the team is under pressure,” Bravo added.
CSK CEO on MSD’s Future in IPL
Apart from Bravo, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan too made a positive statement to the question “Will Dhoni Play Next IPL 2024”.
Kasi Viswanathan has made it clear that this is not MS Dhoni’s last season with the franchise.
“We believe MS Dhoni is going to play next season as well. I hope fans will continue to support us like every time” Kasi Viswanathan said in a video posted by CSK.
