IPL 2024 Playoffs Chances

IPL 2024 Qualified Teams Predictions- With each team left to play handful of matches in the remainder of the league stage of the season, here’s a look at the qualification scenario of all 10 teams:

Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings are currently placed at the 4th spot in the IPL 2024 points table. Though they look comfortable at the moment, CSK need to win at least three of their remaining games to enter the playoff round without much trouble.

Despite a loss against PBKS on Wednesday, CSK managed to stand in fourth place with 10 points in ten games. If SRH beats RR on Thursday(May 2), CSK might lose their spot.

CSK, SRH and DC all three have bagged 10 points with a difference in matches played. To qualify for the playoffs a team requires at least 16 points. Keep that in concern, CSK can afford only one defeat in their remaining four games.

If CSK wins all their remaining games, then Ruturaj Gaikwad and Co can comfortably enter the playoff round.

Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals needs to win all their remaining three matches to seal their playoff spot. With 10 points in 11 games, Delhi placed in the 6th spot in the IPL 2024 points table. A hat-trick victory will lead them to register 16 points which is good enough for a team to be placed in the playoff round.

If not, Delhi needs to win at least 2 of their remaining 3 games with a better NRR and needs to rely on the other teams’ results for their IPL 2024 playoff chances.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Royal Challengers Bengaluru have won just 3 games out of their first 10 matches and are placed at the bottom of the points table.

Their IPL 2024 playoff chances are not as good as the other teams. If RCB win all their remaining 4 games they can score 14 points which is not an ideal number for the playoffs qualification. RCB still have a chance for their IPL 2024 playoff qualification –  they need to win all remaining four games with a higher NRR and need to rely on other teams’ results.

If RCB loses their next game, then they are officially out of the IPL 2024 playoff race.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders who bagged 12 points in 9 games still need to win at least 2 games to confirm their spot in the playoffs round. With 16 points, KKR can comfortably enter the playoffs. If KKR lost their remaining 5 games and ended up with just 12 points then their playoff chances might get under the radar.

Mumbai Indians

Since the introduction of 2 news in IPL 2022 season, no teams have qualified for the playoff with less than 16 points. If we follow the same, Mumbai’s chances of qualifying for the playoff round are next to impossible as they managed to score only 6 points in 10 games play played so far.

If Mumbai win all their remaining games they can score only 14 points which is 2 points less compared to the 16 points mark. Mumbai Indians also need to rely on other teams’ results to get a chance to enter the playoff round.

Mumbai Indians become the first team to be disqualified from the IPL 2024 playoff race.

Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings’ chances for the playoffs are still not in a healthy condition for the IPL 2024 playoffs. With a win against CSK at Chepauk, PBKS bagged 8 points in 10 matches they played. Punjab needs to win all their remaining 4 games to achieve the 16 points count which could lead them to enter the playoffs comfortably.

If not, PBKS needs to win at least 3 of their remaining 4 games which could make them score 14 points. With 14 points and a better run rate, PBKS needs to rely on other teams’ results for their playoff chances.

Rajasthan Royals

Rajasthan Royals with 16 points from 9 matches nearly sealed their spot in the IPL 2024 playoffs with 5 matches remaining to play. Though RR lost those 5 matches they can still qualify for the playoffs with their decent run rate.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Sunrisers Hyderabad who bagged 10 points in their first 9 games needs to win at least 3 of their remaining six matches. If they manage to register 3 victories then Pat Cummins and Co will end up scoring 16 points.

An extra win will make their path comfortable if not then they need to maintain a better run rate compared to the other teams with the same 16 points.

Lucknow Super Giants

Lucknow Super Giants currently bagged 12 points in 10 games they played so far. With 4 matches remaining, LSG needs to win at least 3 games to secure their playoff spot.

If not, KL Rahul and Co need to win at least 2 games with a better run rate and need to rely on the other teams’ results for their playoff chances.

Gujarat Titans

IPL 2022 winners Gujarat Titans are nearly having a tough time this season. GT bagged 4 victories in their first 10 matches and placed 8th in the points table with 8 points.

Gujarat needs to win all their remaining 4 matches to reach the 16-point mark. If not GT needs to win at least 3 of their remaining matches with a better run rate and need to rely on the other teams’ results for their IPL 2024 playoff chances.

IPL 2024 New Rules

IPL 2024 Rules: Ahead of the IPL 2024 season, BCCI has made noticeable changes in their rule book including a hike in uncapped player’s salaries and allowing a couple of bouncers in an over.

Check out the full updated IPL 2024 Rules below:

  • BCCI introduced a change in the salary of the Uncapped Indian players. As per the BCCI’s new plan, the uncapped Indians who play international cricket between IPLs will receive a hike in their IPL salary.
    • Prior to the start of any Season, the League Fee payable to any player who is uncapped is less than Rs. 50 Lakhs; and
    • Such player is then capped or achieves 5 or 10 Caps at any time during the period from the end of one Season up to the start of the next Season.
    • The League Fee payable to such Player for such next season and any subsequent season if such player’s contract is extended by the relevant franchise shall be Rs. 50 Lakhs for so long as such player has 1 Cap, Rs. 75 Lakhs for so long as such player has 5-9 Caps and Rs. 1 crore if the player has 10 Caps or more; and
    • If such player is subsequently traded then prior to such trade his League Fee shall be deemed to be determined under paragraph (c) above.
    • It is clarified that for the purposes of calculating the Salary Cap, if the player is traded, then any increase in a player’s League Fee will apply to the new franchise’s Salary Cap.
    • However, if the player remains with the existing team, then such an increase will not affect the Franchisee’s Salary Cap and the Salary Cap will remain the same as it was before the increase in Player’s League Fee.
  • BCCI included the “Smart Replay System” in the IPL 2024 season for quicker and more accurate reviews.
  • For the first time in the IPL, bowlers can bowl two bounces in an over in IPL 2024.
  • The IPL 2024 season will also retain the Impact Player Rule which was introduced in IPL 2023.
  • Team captains can walk in with 2 different team sheets before handling their final playing 11 after the toss.
    • Depending on the toss result, the teams can pick their best 11 after the toss. But till last season, the captains had to exchange the teams before the toss.
    • For Example: If team A wants to bat first and then defend a total on a slow track in turning conditions and is forced to bowl first they can pick the playing 11 with an extra spinner in the starting 11 and then they can replace a specialist bowler with a batter in the second innings to help with the run-chase.
    • BCCI introduced this rule in the 2023 edition to bring down the motto of “win toss, win match” in certain conditions.
  • IPL 2024 will have two DRS for each inning.
  • Players can take reviews for wides and no-balls in IPL
  • Upon a catch dismissal, irrespective of whether the batsmen have crossed or not the incoming batsman will take the strike, except if it’s the last ball of the over
  • If any team fails to find their playing XI due to COVID-19, the BCCI will attempt to reschedule the game later in the IPL 2024.
  • If rescheduling won’t be possible then IPL Technical Team will see the matter.
  • In Playoffs/Final: If Super Over or subsequent Super Overs can’t be completed due to some reason then the team that has finished higher in the league will be declared as the winner.
  • Over rate penalty of only four fielders outside the 30-yard circle for every over not completed in the allocated time.
  • Unfair movement of the wicketkeeper will result in a dead ball and 5 penalty runs.
  • Unfair movement by a fielder will result in a dead ball and 5 penalty runs

What is Impact Player Rule

  • Impact Player can only be an Indian player unless there are less than 4 overseas players in the Playing XI.
  • Only an overseas player who is part of 4 substitutes named in the team sheet can be used as an Impact Player. If a team introduces an overseas player as an Impact Player in a match, in no circumstance can a 5th overseas player take the field.
  • Teams need to pick 4 substitutes along with the playing X1 during toss time & out of 4, only one can be used as an impact player.
  • The captain will nominate the Impact Player
  • Impact Player can be introduced before the start of the innings, or after the completion of the over, or after the fall of a wicket or after the batter retires anytime during the over.
  • A Player who is replaced by an Impact Player (“Replaced Player”) can no longer take part in the remainder of the match and is also not permitted to return as a substitute fielder.
  • The BCCI confirms that an Impact Player cannot act as a captain.
  • An Impact Player can come in place of a retired batter who will be allowed to come later if need be.
  • Both teams are allowed to use one Impact Player per match. It is, however, not compulsory. It is up to teams whether they want to use the Impact Player or not.
  • If a player gets injured while fielding mid-over, he can no longer take part in the match if the team introduces Impact Player to replace him.
  • In case of an injury to the impact player during the match, a substitute fielder is allowed to field in place of an injured player only if umpires are satisfied.
  • The substitute shall not bowl or act as captain.
  • Penalty time for the batting and fielding teams will apply to the player off the field for the substitute as per the playing conditions.

IPL 2024 Playoffs Rules

The playoffs consist of two Qualifiers and one Eliminator. Qualifier 1 is played first, followed by the Eliminator and then Qualifier 2.

Qualifier 1: The first Qualifier is played between the top two teams in the points table. The Qualifier is like a semi-final. The team winning this game goes straight to the IPL final. The loser of Qualifier 1 takes part in Qualifier 2 – for another shot at the final. Thus, the teams finishing in the top two spots of the points table get two bites of the cherry – they have two chances to qualify for the IPL final.

Eliminator: The Eliminator is played between teams who finish at the third and fourth position in the points table. Like the name suggests, the team losing this match is out of the competition. The winner of this match goes into Qualifier 2.

Qualifier 2: The loser of Qualifier 1 and the winner of the Eliminator play this game. This again is like a semi-final and the team winning this game moves into the final.

IPL Final: The final and the most crucial juncture of this prestigious competition is played between the winner of Qualifier 1 and the winner of Qualifier 2.
