IPL 2022: Shane Watson Returns to IPL as Delhi Capitals Assistant Coach

Delhi Capitals Assistant Coach: Former Australian cricketer Shane Watson is set to join Delhi Capitals as the team’s Assistance coach. While Former India allrounder Ajit Agarkar is also set to join Delhi Capitals for IPL 2022 where he will replace Mohammed Kaif who was regular in the DC dugout since 2019.

The franchise didn’t renew the deals of Mohammad Kaif and Ajay Ratra contracts for the upcoming IPL 2022 season. The duo had served assistant coaches from the franchise last season.

The 40-year-old Queenslander, a two-time IPL winner with Rajasthan Royals (2008) and Chennai Super Kings (2018) will be an assistant coach of the side which will, in fact, have a few of them working under Ponting.

The Australian all-rounder announced his retirement from international cricket in 2016  and continued to play for CSK in IPL since 2018. But in November 2020, Shane Watson announced retirement from all forms of competitive cricket.

As per the report, Ajit Agarkar will join his former franchise as its assistant coach. A full-time cricket expert now, Agarkar played for DC from 2011 to 2013. He was part of Kolkata Knight Riders from 2008 to 2010.

Agarkar has never coached an IPL side and will be making his coaching debut in the 15th edition of the season. India’s 3rd-highest wicket-taker in ODIs, Agarkar scalped 288 wickets in 191 matches. He also played 26 Test matches. A member of the 2007 T20 World Cup-winning squad, Agarkar played 4 T20Is. He retired from professional cricket in 2013.

Agarkar’s official designation will be Assistant Coach but he will primarily work with DC’s fast bowling unit. It is worth noting that the IPL team from Delhi already has James Hopes in the ranks as the team’s bowling coach.

Watson, who had a long IPL career, will also make his coaching debut in the season. As per a report, he will don the assistant coach’s hat. The report suggests that Watson has been roped in on Ponting’s recommendation.

None of these developments have been officially announced or confirmed by Delhi Capitals management as yet.
