BCCI is set to discuss the Impact Player Rule in the upcoming meeting with the franchise owners which is scheduled for Wednesday evening.
According to reports, a five-point agenda shared with franchise owners, the BCCI is looking for some sort of approval on the ‘Impact Player Rule‘ in the Indian Premier League cricket community.
According to a report, the meeting will take place on July 31 at 07:30 PM in the BCCI office on the fourth floor of the Wankhede Stadium Complex. The ‘Impact Player’ rule introduced a couple of years ago, has sparked questions and debate in the domestic league community.
While the playing and coaching community is believed to be largely opposed to it, the broadcasters who have invested INR 48,000 crores into the league have favored its continuation.
The BCCI has not made any decisions on the matter, which may explain the addition of the point to the meeting agenda. While Board officials appreciate that the rule provides an opportunity for an additional Indian player, they also acknowledge the concerns that it might negatively impact the development of all-rounders, players who are crucial to a team’s success at any level of the competition.
It may not be surprising if the BCCI decides to eliminate the rule from the Syed Mushtaq Ali domestic T20 competition, where it was first implemented a couple of years ago.
There are strong indications from within the BCCI that a rethink on the rule is underway, although no final decision has yet been made. It is expected to take a call in a few days.
The agenda consists of other points which are expected to be on the retention issue.
ITEM NO. 1: Discussion on IPL Player Regulations including:
- Players Retention / Right to Match
- Salary Cap (Auction Purse, Incremental Performance Pay & Match Fee)
- Big Auction
- Capped to uncapped players
- Player Trade / Player Loan
As evident in the agenda above, the IPL franchise and the BCCI seem to be open to the suggestions of providing increments to a performing player each year. There is no mention of expanding the auction cycle from existing three to five.
The other items on the agenda are:
- ITEM NO. 2: Overseas Players
- ITEM NO. 3: Discussion on the Impact Player Rule
- ITEM NO. 4: IPL Gaming rights
- ITEM NO. 5: Discussion on IPL Central Merchandising
- ITEM NO. 6: To consider any other business matters related to the IPL.
