Jason Roy IPL 2023 Team: Kolkata Knight Riders ropes England batter Jason Roy for INR 2.8 crores after their star batter Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of the season owing to a lower back injury while Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has confirmed his unavailability for the season.
KKR Ropes Jason Roy For INR 2.8 Crores
Shreyas Iyer who was named in the Indian squad for the Australia 3-match ODI series was ruled out of the series before the 1st match. Iyer had to leave the Ahmedabad Test due to a recurrence of a back injury and will undergo surgery.
In the absence of Iyer, KKR named Nitish Rana as the captain who has been with the franchise since 2018. It was earlier reported that Iyer is expected to be out of action for at least three months as he’s set to undergo back surgery. He’s also expected to miss the final of the ICC World Test Championship slated to be played in June.
Roy, who earlier featured in the 2017 and 2018 seasons, last played in the 2021 season for Sunrisers Hyderabad. So far, the 32-year-old has represented the now-defunct Gujarat Lions (2017), Delhi Daredevils (2018-19), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (2021) in the Indian Premier League.
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) bought Roy for Rs 2.8 crore, more than his base price of Rs 1.5 crore.
In 2021, he played five games, scoring 150 runs including a half-century. The 32-year-old has played 64 T20Is for England, scoring 1522 runs at an S/R of 137.61 with 8 fifties.
Roy, though, enjoys a brilliant track record in T20s, having had the experience of playing in the Big Bash League (BBL), The Hundred, SA20, Pakistan Super League (PSL), and Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). The right-hander has played 313 T20s, scoring 8,110 runs at a decent strike rate of 141.90, which includes six centuries and 53 fifties.
Kolkata Knight Riders kick-started their 2023 season with a defeat to Punjab Kings(DLS method). KKR will now face Royal Challengers Bangalore on Thursday and that will be their first home game of the season.
