Maxwell told the teammates following Stars’ final game of the season against Hobart Hurricanes. They were out of contention for finals following Adelaide Strikers’ victory over Sydney Thunder after they lost the match by Melbourne Renegades.

Glenn Maxwell has two years left on his current contract. He has made 243 runs with an average of 34.71 with a strike Rate of 173.57. Although he did not shine in the batting line-up, he claimed seven wickets in this season.

Melbourne Stars are one of the two clubs, alongside Hurricanes had never won the BBL.

Melbourne Stars have been runner three times, including 2018-19, 2010-20 seasons. “We left our run in someone else’s hands which is never what you want to do in this game,” said Maxwell.

“After the first couple of years, having so much dominance and not being able to get over that final hurdle, it feels like the last four years out of finals contention is quite frustrating.

“We feel like we’ve had a good enough list, probably haven’t had enough luck with injuries and timing, replacements, and it just all seems to compound on itself.”

On the other hand, Peter Moores who was the coach in his first season with Melbourne Stars praised Glenn Maxwell for his impressive efforts for the club.

“Credit to him, he comes off the back of a World Cup, and what a World Cup for him personally and Australia, but to get the enthusiasm and the drive, that’s all you looking for as a coach, and he’s had that every day,” said Moores.

“The Stars is where he captains and he’s put his heart and soul into it. I’ve had good laughs with him on and around the game, and also off the field, it’s been great fun.”

Marcus Stoinis is also out of contract with Melbourne Stars, but it’s clear that the club is positive to sign him again for the next season.

Perth Scorchers and Adelaide Strikers will be playing their next match on January 20, 2024 at Optus Stadium.
