Australia have been fined 40% of their match fee and penalised four ICC World Test Championship points for maintaining a slow over-rate in their defeat by India in the second test in Melbourne on Tuesday.

Tim Paine’s side were ruled to be two overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration with match referee David Boon imposing the sanction.
“In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC code of conduct which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20% of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time,” the ICC said.
“In addition, as per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, a side is penalised two points for each over short.”
AUS vs IND 2nd Test
India needs 70 runs to win the second Test match after they bowled Australia out for 200 in the second innings at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Tuesday.
India had taken a first-innings lead of 131 thanks to a century by skipper Ajinkya Rahane as well as a half-century from all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. The Aussies, who resumed on 133 for six, added 67 more runs before getting bowled out at the stroke of lunch in the extended first session.
Debutant Siraj picked two of the four wickets to fall on the day to take his innings tally to 3 for 37. Bumrah picked one where Ashwin also took one wicket.
Cameron Green (45) and Cummins added 23 more and took their seventh-wicket partnership to 57 in the morning before Cummins dismissed by a short delivery from Bumrah as the seventh wicket.
Green was out to a pull shot off Siraj. Lyon fell to the same bowler caught behind down the leg-side. All the 3 wickets were off short deliveries on a wicket that afforded no help to either the pace bowlers or spinners.
R Ashwin took the last wicket of Josh Hazlewood and bags a massive victory for India.
Cricket’s global governing body said Paine pleaded guilty to the offence and there was no need for a formal hearing. India won the second test within four days in Melbourne on Tuesday, a rousing eight-wicket victory which levelled the four-match series at 1-1. The third test is scheduled to begin on Jan. 7.
