BCCI is eyeing to host the IPL 2021 with a new format in the league matches. The decision comes after the BCCI’s decision of adding two more teams in IPL 2021.
IPL 2021 Mega Auction date
Post the IPL 2020 the major talk start to arises on behalf of the IPL 2021 mega auction date. If BCCI plans to add additional teams then the mega auction will be the possible solution for the board.
BCCI is in the mood to arrange the mega auction before the IPL 2021 as it had added to the AGM agenda. Hence, fans will get the confirmed news about the mega auctions just after finishing the AGM at the end of December. Regarding the IPL 2021 mega auction, a trustworthy report suggests that
“Time constraints are there but the full auction will be in the interest of everyone. IPL Governing Council will formally decide on this in next 3-4 weeks and communicate to everyone concerned,” a person in the know of things told Insidesport on condition of anonymity.
Possible new teams in IPL 2021
As per the latest reports, Adani Group owned by Gautam Adani and RPSG owned by Sanjeev Goenka are the frontline contenders for the two new IPL teams.
There isn’t any conclusive evidence yet, but Adani Group and Goenka Group are the frontrunners to buy the ninth and tenth teams of IPL 2021.
Adani’s in the past have shown their interest in buying an IPL team. With Ahmedabad now boasting of the biggest cricket stadium across the world, their interest will grow manifolds.
Goenka, on the other hand, had been the owner of Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) in the past and will surely throw their hat in the ring when BCCI comes out with a tender.
New format for IPL 2021
The new format will be followed after BCCI’s approval of the new two teams to play in IPL 2021. The addition of two more teams will increase the number of league matches to play on compared to the latest edition of playing with 8 teams.
According to a report, there will be a change in the IPL format from the 2021 edition as the organising committee is eyeing to go back to 2011 when ten teams used to participate in the tournament.
As per the new format, the ten teams will be divided into two groups of five each. All the sides will play 13 matches in the league stage – facing the other four teams in their group twice (home and away game) and competing against the five teams from another group once.
Currently, eight teams lock horns with each other twice in the league stage before the top four makes it to the playoffs. So, the number of matches for each team in the round-robin format will increase to 18 from 14 if two more teams are added in the T20 extravaganza leading to a lengthy IPL.
