The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to request an extension from the ICC for the India squad announcement for Champions Trophy 2025, which is supposed to be revealed by January 12.
According to reports, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee was expected to announce the team by January 12, but they are likely to request an extension from the sports governing body.
Ahead of all ICC events, every participating team has to submit their provisional squad at least a month before the tournament, but this time, the Cricket Council has requested that their provisional squad be named five weeks before the start of the Champions Trophy.
“The BCCI, citing recent commitments in Australia for the Test series, is expected to request for more time. It is likely that the provisional Champions Trophy squad will predominantly feature players from the three home ODIs against England” said a report.
India’s squad for Champions Trophy 2025 is likely to revealed on January 19. All participating teams can also make changes to their provisional squad before the start of the tournament with prior tournament with prior information to the ICC but it very likely that India’s squad will be the final one uncless there are any injury concerns.
The first match of the ICC event will be played between Pakistan and New Zealand on February 19 at National Stadium Karachi.
Meanwhile, India’s squad for the home ODI series against England and the one for the Champions Trophy will almost the same. The squad for the T20I leg of England’s tour of India 2024 likely to be announced on Saturday on Sunday.
The selectors are set to retain the same squad that recently played against Bangladesh and South Africa.
The first match of the T20I series of home tour against England will begin on January 22 at Eden Gardens.
