Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh reveals the different facet of MS Dhoni as he played under his captaincy in both International matches as well as IPL matches. MS Dhoni who led CSK since 2008 won the IPL trophy for 3 times and holds second highest IPL trophy winners next to Mumbai Indians.

MS Dhoni is regarded as one of the greatest batsman in cricket history bags numerous number of records under his name. Dhoni is the only captain to win all the three ICC tournaments as captain(ICC World Cup 2011, ICC Champions Trophy 2013 and World T20 trophy 2007).

“He is not a captain who says, do this, do that. He wants you to do what you know you can do. Bowl what you know you can. If you can bowl six offspinners, do that,” Harbhajan told ESPNcricinfo.

“Yes, he has nudged me at times – from behind the stumps or at change of overs – saying, this guy is trying to do this or will try this. But he never tells me what to do,” he added.

Recalling a match during IPL when pacer Shardul Thakur was being taken to the cleaners, Harbhajan said he approached Dhoni to speak with the youngster and ask him to change tactics.

“Once Shardul Thakur was bowling in Pune. He was getting hit every ball. First ball four, second ball six. I went to Dhoni and told him, ‘Why don’t you tell him [Thakur] to change the angle or push a fielder back?’,” Harbhajan said.

“As if he had all the time in the world, Dhoni said to me, ‘Bhajju pa, if I tell him anything now, he will get confused. Khaane do.’ [Let him get hit.] He knew we could afford to get hit because we had already qualified for the playoffs.”

“He [Dhoni] said, ‘When he [Thakur] feels there is no option left, then I can tell him he could try doing this.’ So Dhoni will not tell you until you realise you are short of ideas,” the 39-year-old said.

Sachin Tendulkar’s reply to Brain Lara’s video post

Former West Indies Cricketer Brain Lara shared a glipse of his son Zende who was learning to bat with a little help and some instructions from his mother. Brain Lara who is considered as one of the greatest batsman of all time holds several cricketing records, including the record for the highest individual score in first-class cricket, with 501 not out for Warwickshire against Durham at Edgbaston in 1994.

Lara recently posted a video on his Instagram where his con seen learning to bat with some advice from his parents.

The video soon caught the attention of his good friend Sachin Tendulkar. The master blaster shared the pic of Lara’s son with a childhood picture of himself holding the bat in a similar manner.

“@brianlaraofficial I know of another boy who had a similar grip and didn’t do too badly in international cricket,” Tendulkar wrote.

Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami shared a video where he seen practicing cricket in indoor with his family. Right-arm fast bowler, who consistently bowls around the 140 to 145 km/h (87 to 90 mph) mark, and swings and seams ball at that pace which makes him a deceptively potent fast bowler.

Reverse swing specialist Shami made his ODI debut against Pakistan in January 2013 where he bowled a record four maiden overs. Shami’s IPL history

Shami made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2013. He was signed by Delhi Daredevils for the 2014 season but played only a few matches in that season. He was retained by the franchise in 2015 but did not play a match that season before becoming a regular in the side. In December 2018, he was bought by Kings XI Punjab in the player auction ahead of the 2019 season.

T20I Carrier

Shami made his debut in Twenty20 Internationals on 21 March 2014 against Pakistan in the opening match of the World T20 and took the wicket of Umar Akmal. He was played for only three matches in the tournament and dropped from the rest. He was included in the side in 2014 tour of England, following the Test series, in July. He played in the lone match of the series and finished with 3 wickets conceding 38 runs.

Sangakkara reveled this never-heard-before info during the latest episode of Instagram series ‘Reminisce with Ash’ hosted by Ravichandran Ashwin when the off-spinner asked the former keeper-batsman about the controversial toss when the coin flip was done twice amid the cacophony of the Wankhede and eventually Sangakkara opted to bat.

“The was crowd was huge. It never happens in Sri Lanka. Once I had this at Eden Gardens when I could not talk to the first slip and then of course at the Wankhede. I remember calling on the toss then Mahi wasn’t sure and said did you call tail and I said no I called head,” Kumar said.

“The match referee actually said I won the toss, Mahi said he did not. There was a little bit of confusion there and Mahi said let’s have another toss of the coin and heads went up again.”

“I am not sure whether it was luck that I won. I believe probably India might have batted if I had lost,” he added.

The loss meant Sri Lanka’s wait for a world title continued as the 1996 world champions failed in the final hurdle again.

“Whether we win or lose, we have this equilibrium on how to take a win or loss. The smile hides a huge amount of sadness, of disappointment, of thinking of 20 million people back in Sri Lanka who had been waiting for this for so long, since 1996.”

“We had an opportunity in 2011, opportunity in 2007, then T20 opportunities in 2009 and 2012,” Sangakkara said.

The former skipper also expressed his thoughts on how them missing out on having Angelo Mathews in the team for the 2011 World Cup hurt them the most and said: “In that WC final, that’s the biggest thing I look back and think…”

“You can talk about drop catches and all of that happens. But the composition of the side and the fact that we were forced to make the change was to me the turning point.”

Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the three-time Indian Premier League champions, won their maiden title in 2010, beating Mumbai Indians in the final at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. Chasing 169 for the win, Mumbai Indians were well on course before MS Dhoni’s “homework” helped the Chennai-based franchise to take control of the proceedings and eventually lift the trophy.

Shadab Jakati, former CSK left-arm spinner, in a chat with Wisden India revealed how MS Dhoni’s plan against Mumbai’s right-handed batsmen worked and he got the prized scalp of Sachin Tendulkar.

“I had gone for 21 runs in my first two overs,” Jakati recalled. “With left-hander Abhishek Nayar batting, Dhoni told me I’d now bowl in the middle overs,” Jakati said.

“(He kept) me for the right-handers – Sachin Tendulkar, Ambati Rayudu and Kieron Pollard. We had done our homework against MI’s right-handers, who were potentially weak against left-arm spinners,” the spinner added.

Dhoni’s idea worked and Jakati, in his third over, gave away just five runs and got Tendulkar chipping a straight delivery to mid-off while two deliveries later, he got Saurabh Tiwary caught in the deep.

Chennai defeated Mumbai by 22 runs to lift their maiden IPL title.

Further speaking on the captaincy tactics of MS Dhoni, Jakati mentioned that Dhoni allows every bowler to think on their own and only when things don’t go according to the plan, he chips in with his suggestion.

“He never attended any bowlers’ meeting,” Jakati said. “(That’s) purely because he backs his own instincts and gut feeling at that particular time of the match. He gave us freedom to choose our fields, and if it didn’t work, he’d use his brains. But the first preference was us,” Jakati concluded.

In February 2015, Iyer was signed in the 2015 IPL players auction by the Delhi Daredevils for 2.6 crores (approximately $430,000). Thus Iyer became the highest earning uncapped player in the tournament. He scored 439 runs in 14 matches, with a 33.76 average and a strike rate of 128.36, making him the 9th most consistent player and Emerging Player of 2015 IPL.

In 2018 IPL he was announced as the new captain of Delhi Daredevils replacing Gautam Gambhir. On his IPL captaincy debut, Shreyas Iyer smashed an unbeaten match winning knock of 93 off 40 deliveries with 10 sixes, which was his third successive IPL fifty of the season to power DD to a heavy total of 219/5 in the first innings of the match before earning him the man of the match award.

He was retained by the Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2019 Season which he led the team into the playoffs for the first time after seven years.

Originally slated to begin from October 18, the ICC T20 World Cup 2020 is unlikely to see the daylight primarily because of the novel COVID-19 pandemic. Despite an improvement in the coronavirus situation down under conducting a 16-team tournament involves significant risk.

Going by a leaked letter from CA to ICC, it is clear that the former has asked the ICC to postpone the tournament by a year so that they can conduct it next year and not in 2022. Earlier, it was being speculated that India would continue to host the T20 World Cup in 2021 and Australia will get their chance in 2022.

“It would be detrimental to cricket if the cancellation of the Australian event is replaced by awarding of the subsequent T20 World Cup in October-November 2022.

“Australia has thankfully managed to flatten the [COVID] curve, meaning there is greater certainty of being able to play in Australia in 2021 [which is key to maintaining member distribution]. This would give India another year to resolve any COVID-related problems,” read the letter sent by CA to ICC according to The Times of India.

If Cricket Australia’s proposal reaches fruition and situation around coronavirus improves in India, the 13th season of the Indian Premier League will have a strong chance of being played in October-November this year.

Former New Zealand captain and current coach of IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders Brendon McCullum had hinted the same nearly a month ago.

Cricket Australia (CA) on Thursday confirmed its international fixtures for the 2020-21 season which involves 3 T20Is, 4 Tests and 3 ODIs against India men’s cricket team between October 11 and January 17.

After a period of over 6 months cricket matches have been rescheduled. Due to the outbreak of corona virus scheduled sports events has been cancelled. After a lot of hurdles Cricket Australia finally confirms India tour on Australia for 3 T20I matches, 3 Test Matches along with 3 ODI Matches during the October 2020 to January 2021.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) will be discussing to postpone this year’s T20 World Cup in Australia to 2022. The decision to have to the tournament in 2022 is due to the fact that they already have an edition scheduled to take place in 2021 in India.

The ICC Board is also likely to discuss the issue of tax exemption for the 2021 World T20 in India as BCCI has sought more time due to the lockdown. The deadline to get tax exemption was December 2019 but it is understood that the BCCI can hardly do anything when it comes to the country’s existing tax laws.

The 2016 World T20 tax rebate issue has already been referred to the tribunal.

“If they didn’t change it in 2016 World T20, why would they change the rule in 2021. And also the tax exemption is primarily on waiver of import duty of broadcast equipment.

“We can understand that exemption is required in Australia but here Star has a fully operational set-up with all production equipment. Why do you require an exemption?” the BCCI official asked.

Cricket Australia Request to Host T20 World Cup in 2021

Cricket Australia (CA) chairman Earl Eddings reportedly shot a letter to ICC’s Financial and Commercial Affairs Committee (F&CA) last week requesting that it should be granted rights to host the Men’s T20 World Cup in 2021 instead of 2022 citing financial interests.

The F&CA is headed by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ehsan Mani and also includes Eddings among others. BCCI, however, isn’t part of the committee.

As per The Times of India, Eddings wrote “it would be detrimental for cricket if the cancellation of the “Australian event” (T20 World Cup) is replaced by award of the subsequent T20 World Cup in October/November 2022″.

KXIP head coach Anil Kumble’s hope

Right-arm leg spinner Anil Kumble, who is a member of the ICC Technical Committee and also the head coach of IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) said that the T20 league is possible even if it goes ahead without fans and at limited venues.

“Yes, we are hopeful and optimistic that there’s still a possibility if we can cram in the schedule. If we are going to have a stadium without spectators, then probably have 3 or 4 venues; there’s still a possibility, we are all optimistic,” Kumble said on Star Sports’ Cricket Connected.

Laxman echoed Kumble’s views and added that one venue which has multiple grounds should be identified to reduce travelling and minimise the infection.

“Absolutely, and also make sure that all the stakeholders have a say. Anil (Kumble) mentioned that you can have two or four venues, I still feel that you should identify one venue, which probably has 3 or 4 grounds; if at all you find that kind of a venue because travel is again going to be quite challenging,” he said.

“You don’t know who’s going to be where at the airports so that I’m sure the franchises and the BCCI will be looking into,” he added.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman Shashank Manohar – whose second term is slated to end at the end of this year, has confirmed he will not be contesting for a third term.

An official release by the ICC also confirmed that the board has not taken a call on the process of the elections and the same will be discussed on Thursday. Notably, the ICC usually adopts to a secret ballot system for these elections but may not be able to adapt the same during the time of the coronavirus pandemic.

“No final decision was taken regarding the election process and the subject will be discussed further at the next ICC Board meeting on Thursday. The existing Chair confirmed he was not seeking any extension to his term but would support the board to ensure a smooth transition,” the ICC said in a statement.

BCCI treasurer Arun Singh Dhumal told Reuters that the board had not discussed the matter yet but is open to Ganguly succeeding Manohar, provided there is consensus on it.

“BCCI has not taken any call on fielding anyone from India for the job,” Dhumal said. “The election process has not started yet. Once election date is announced, we’ll discuss with all cricket boards and take a call.

“Ideally there should be a consensus candidate so that there is no election as world cricket is facing a big problem because of the pandemic. To resolve it, everyone has to come together.”
