Dinesh Karthik | Losing captain
I think we had areas to do well in bat and ball, I think it was a pretty rusty today, to be honest, I don’t want to get too analytical about it but it’s ok the boys realise where they could have done better.
A couple of the guys – Cummins and Morgan – just finished their quarantine today, it is hard, playing in the heat and getting used to the conditions. Don’t want to be too analytical, the boys put in a good effort.
I haven’t had the conversation about that (regarding tweaking the top order) with Baz, will let you know by the next game.
Rohit Sharma | Winning captain | MoM
It was only two players from the 2014 squad. It was all about how we executed our plans today, we were in good positions and it was all about being ruthless. The wicket was good and dew was coming down.
I back myself to play the pull shots and have practiced quite a bit. Pretty happy with the performance of my squad. All my shots were good (laughs), can’t pick one. I haven’t played a lot of cricket in the last six months’ time and was looking to spend some time in the middle; it didn’t come out well in the first innings but glad to have done it tonight.
We never knew that the IPL would happen in the UAE so we wanted a pace attack that was strong for the Wankhede. But the ball was seaming around for the first six overs over here as well. We haven’t played much with Trent Boult and Pattinson, but it was good that we were on the same page.
It takes a lot out of you to play in these conditions. Maybe I was a bit tired in the end and it was a lesson for us that one set batsmen need to bat till the end. We’ve seen it in the past and that’s what I tried to do.
Match no.4 Chennai Super Kings(CSK) faces Rajasthan Royals(RR) in Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah. Dhoni lead CSK is set to play their second match of the tournament after beating Mumbai Indians in the opening match.
Match: Rajasthan Royals(RR) vs Chennai Super Kings(CSK)
Steve Smith | RR Captain: Probably would have bowled as well. The dew factor as MS just pointed out will come into the game. Bat first and hopefully we do it well. Took a little bit longer than I would have liked. I had my first hit yesterday and it went well. Myself, Tom Curran, Archer, and Miller.
I have been involved with the Royals since 2014, it has been a while with a few years off there. We have got a good group, good bunches of guys, a lot of talent and we are excited about this year. I have heard a lot (about the youngsters) in the last few weeks.
The boys have been trying exceptionally well here and been doing a great job. So it is time to bring out to the middle and hopefully, we can see some really good talent taking off.
MS Dhoni | CSK Captain: We will bowl first. Dew is one of the factors. What we have seen is a consistent amount of dew all over, whenever there is a question mark when it comes to dew you want to chase. I feel this is one venue where the wicket will be entirely different compared to the other two venues.
People will prepare differently for the matches over here. As of now looks good but it will slow down as the match progresses. I don’t know how hard the surface is underneath. We have one change – Rayudu is not 100 percent, so Rituraj comes in his place.
Adaptability is the key in the shortest format. You need to quickly judge what length to bowl on that particular surface and to that particular batsmen. Those are things we need to do, other than that we won’t be the best fielding side, we will be a safe fielding side.

Dhoni | CSK captain: With 217 on the board, we needed a very good start which was not the case. Steve and Samson batted very well. Need to give credit to their bowlers. Once you’ve seen the first innings, you know the length to bowl.
Their spinners did well to bowl away from the batsman. Our spinners made the error to bowl too full. If we would’ve maybe restricted them to 200, it would’ve been a good game. I haven’t batted for a long time. 14-day quarantine doesn’t help (why he isn’t batting higher).
Also wanted to try different things, give opportunities to Sam. Have the opportunity to try different things. If it doesn’t work, you can always go back to your strengths. Faf adapted very well. Something the batsmen will do, neglect square leg, and go more towards long-on and long-off.
Steven Smith | Rajasthan Royals captain: I think the last surge from Jofra was an incredible bit of hitting. Sanju Samson, looked like everything he hit went for six. MS smacked a few in the end, and Faf got going too, but nice to get a W in front of the RRs.
Sanju was incredible, and all I had to do was give him the strike. This should give him a lot of confidence. Jos is a quality player and we’ll see what happens when he comes back. Hard to take the opening slot away from someone like him. It was important for the bowlers to avoid straight hits, and it was important to make him hit the back of a length.
The leg-spinners were very good with their lengths – good on them. Shreyas Gopal does what he does pretty well. Dubai is a lot bigger, and I haven’t trained there, I just got here. So hopefully the boys are ready for it. Looking forward to it.
Man of the Match
Sanju Samson | Rajasthan Royals : My game plan is stand and deliver. If it’s in the arc I go for it, and it’s very important to keep the intent to hit the ball if it’s there to be hit. I’ve been working hard on my fitness, diet and training, and on my strength, because my game relies a lot on power hitting.
I think range-hitting is what the game demands in this generation. I had time to work out in these 5 months, and I think I’ve increased that ability. Everyone likes to keep wickets (about Buttler and Uthappa as alternate options) and no one likes running around, but it’s upto the coach.
We are happy to bring smiles on the fans’ faces and we hope to continue doing so.

Indian legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar points Mumbai Indians as the IPL 2020 winner. The Mumbai born cricketer earlier captained the Mumbai Indians but fails to lift the title for the franchise under his captaincy.
Mumbai Indians is the only franchise to bags four IPL title so far(2020). Rohit Sharma led Mumbai Indians have a strong batting and bowling order for this year’s IPL. But fails to show up in the opening game against Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings.
Speaking to Aakash Chopra in a YouTube interview, Tendulkar said, “Of course the Men in Blue, are there any doubts? I’ve always been in blue everywhere. When Mumbai and Indians come together then it becomes Mumbai Indians.” The Mumbai squad has won the championship four times in the previous seasons.
However, Tendulkar added that the team which has the momentum will have to make the most of it since it is a long tournament. Highlighting that every team is well balanced, Tendulkar opined that the format is such where a lot of things happen quickly.
“When batsmen start playing shot too early we tend to advise him to be a little watchful and when someone takes his time we want him to get on with it. It is going to be exciting. I feel it’s anyone’s game. So the team which has momentum, they have to make the most of it. It’s a 53-day tournament, the momentum comes and goes, there will be a lot of ups and downs,” he said.

Even after retiring from the game after leading the Mumbai squad in initial seasons, Tendulkar continued as a mentor with the franchise. However, this year the Master Blaster has been missing from the spotlight. However, he has informed that he has no plans as of now but might ‘definitely try’ to travel to UAE.
“To a certain extent I’d say that (It’s important to start well). The first game is very important. Even in a Test series, it is the same here. So when the first game goes well, the team meetings become shorter. A less complicated makes you concentrate on what is happening at the opposite end because that is where the bowler will from,” Sachin added.

Post Match
Captains view
KL Rahul | losing captain: It is bittersweet. If at the end of 10 overs, if you had said this match is going to a Super over, I would have taken it. It’s still our first game, so lots of learning. He (Mayank) was unbelievable and to get a game that close was magical.
He’s been doing well in Tests and to get the game that close again brings a lot of confidence in the group. Like I said at the toss, we didn’t know what to expect. The wicket remains the same for both teams, so can’t really complain.
I will gladly take it as a captain whatever the result is. We stuck to what we planned but we did make a few mistakes. At 55 for five, we were calm and still positive.
Shreyas Iyer | Winning Captain : It was difficult to see the game turning in different directions. We are used to this. Even last season we faced these. KG is the winning performer, and the way Stoinis batted was game-changing.
Our top-order batsmen are difficult to stop like Prithvi. It wasn’t easy from the outset to start hitting immediately, and Rishabh and I batted well in the middle to anchor the innings.
Catching has been difficult because of the lights right in our eyes, but that’s not an excuse because we have had practice, so we need to strengthen that area.
Man of the Match
Marcus Stoinis | Delhi Capitals
Batting(53 off 21), Bowling(3-0-29-2)
It’s a weird game, sometimes the luck goes your way, but it’s easy to become the villain from the hero. SO it’s important to enjoy the good days. I try to close down the areas where the bowlers can bowl, and it worked today. It’s important to feed off everyone’s energy.
It’s nice that the IPL has gotten going again, and tonight has been great entertainment. I thought KG bowled a beautiful over, and I don’t have any qualms about not batting in the super over – I think the left-right batting combination was the right thing.
The much-awaited match of the year Chennai Super Kings(CSK) vs Mumbai Indians(MI) has been started with the favour for MS Dhoni. Yes! Chennai Super Kings won the toss and elected to bowl first in the first match of the IPL 2020.
Match : Mumbai Indians(MI) vs Chennai Super Kings(CSK)
Venue: Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi
Toss Details: CSK won the toss and elected to bowl first
MS Dhoni: Wanted to know if we can have a slip (in line with social distancing). Will bowl first. Late evening you get dew. Also to keep the wicket in good condition they water it, so it tends to be tacky at the start. Have the liberty during lockdown to spend time on yourself to keep fit. Have to applaud every member of the squad.
The first six days in quarantine is very difficult. Felt each individual used that time well and nobody was disappointed or frustrated. The practice facilities were very good. After the first 14 days, it was nice to get out. Being a gentleman’s game you don’t think about revenge (against MI). You think about the mistakes you made. Four overseas – Watto, Faf, Sam, and Lungi.
Rohit Sharma: Would’ve bowled first as well, gets better under lights. Have been here a few weeks, so understand conditions better. Before coming here, we had a camp in Mumbai. Also had quality practice out here in Abu Dhabi.
The key here will be to understand the conditions. Pitches for the practice matches will be similar to what we’ll get here. Ready to go. The way we’ve been playing cricket for the last couple of years has been good. All in all, we’ve had good preparation.
Now all about execution. Four overseas – Quinton, Pollard, Pattinson, Boult. NCN still not quite match fit with some niggles. Good opportunity for Pattinson who’s been bowling well for Australia.
Murali Vijay, Shane Watson, Faf du Plessis, Ambati Rayudu, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni(w/c), Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran, Deepak Chahar, Piyush Chawla, Lungi Ngidi.

Rohit Sharma | Losing captain: None of our batsmen carried on for us as du Plessis and Rayudu did for CSK. I think we were 85 in the first 10 overs. Credit to the CSK bowlers, they bowled well at the end to pull things back. Something for us to learn. Still early days.
We all want to start really well, it’s crucial in this tournament where momentum is important. Few things for us to learn from this game, we did make a few mistakes. Hopefully, we’ll rectify those and come out smarter in the next game.
We are used to people cheering for us, and we knew this (empty stands) was on the cards. Anyway, this is new normal, but I hope for a while and hope that things get better soon. We need to adapt to the pitches, it got better with the dew coming.
You need to hit the gaps and focus on that part of the game. The opposition can tie you down, it’s all about understanding what we need to do.
MS Dhoni | Winning captain: It doesn’t feel like a post-match presentation. We may practice enough but when you go on the field you need to assess the conditions and give it your best.
It took us time for the bowlers to find the right length on this pitch. Plenty of positives but still plenty of areas for us to improve. In the second half, there is a bit of movement until the dew sets in.
If you don’t lose wickets, you have the upper hand. These are the learnings. Rayudu had a wonderful partnership with Faf. Most of us are retired so luckily no injuries as well.
Player of the match
Ambati Rayudu: I kept training in the lockdown. It was a stop-start but I was really eager. When the dew came on batting became much easier. We practiced in Chennai which really helped and then in Dubai as well.

“They complement each other well, they’re consistent and both of them are experienced. They’re good leaders as well, so why would you want to fix something that isn’t broken? We will continue to go with that.”
“Lynn as an option gives us flexibility in the squad and that’s what we’ve always done. We try and add more value to the team, give more options so that we can be unpredictable when it comes to tournaments and big matches. Quinton and Rohit as a combination have been brilliant,” he added.
