Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) treasurer Arun Dhumal has expressed his thoughts on whether the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) can be hosted later this year or not.
Due to the rapid spread of novel corona virus many scheduled events has been postponed. The most anticipated event of the year 2020 too face the same fate. The cash rich Indian Premier League has been postponed to mid of April.
BCCI’s previous announcement
Earlier BCCI scheduled to start the match from March 29, the out break of corona virus made this huge event to postpone. BCCI after discussing with IPL franchises comes out with a decision to host the IPL later.
But the postponed IPL date too get in oscillation when Indian government imposed a 21 day lock down nationally. BCCI seeks its all possible way to host the tournament as it would cost a huge loss to BCCI board.
IPL update
As the lockdown has been extend, hosting of this cash rich league gets in oscillation. According to Dhumal, it is still way too early to determine if the cash-rich tournament can be hosted later this year near October-November.
“Right now, the picture is very hazy. We don’t even know when the lockdown will end and if we don’t know, how can we even have a meaningful discussion.”
“Once we get clarity from the government, we can then sit and take fresh stock of the situation. Any speculation about its future will be premature,” Dhumal was quoted as saying by PTI.
Speaking on the current situation in the country amid COVID-19 outbreak, Dhumal stated: “Everyone wants IPL to happen but let’s have some clarity first. Our office-bearers are in constant touch. It’s not just IPL but there is a huge amount of pending administrative work, legal issues that need to be studied. But there was no conference call scheduled today as there is nothing to discuss till the current situation persists.”
The virus has brought all sports activities to a halt and players are practising social distancing and self-isolation during the pandemic. The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the governments all around are urging people to stay at home.
With a lot of expectations going around in the 2003 WC, an unexpected incident happens where Shane Warne sentenced to a ban from the 2003 World Cup.
A fortnight before the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003 in South Africa, legendary Australia spinner Shane Warne had announced that he will call time on a decade-long ODI career after playing his third World Cup.
Having dismissed 291 batsmen in 193 ODIs at an average of 25.82, an economy rate of 4.25 and a strike rate of 36.4, Warne was Australia’s highest wicket-taker at the time he played his last ODI in January 2003. The illustrious spinner was the sixth-highest wicket-taker among all bowlers around the world in the format.
Representing the defending champions and also the favourites in the 2003 World Cup, one can say that Warne had picked the right time to hang his boots. With us knowing in the hindsight that Australia had won the World Cup, it would have been an “apt” time for Warne to leave one format.
Another reason behind the tournament being all the more special for Warne was that he had injured his shoulder in December 2002 while playing in an ODI against England and was facing a prospect of missing the World Cup. An exceptional five-week recovery saw the then 33-year old bowler take field in an international match in January.
Shane Warne 2003 ban
The fourth match of the tournament was Australia’s opener against Pakistan in Johannesburg. It was on the eve of the match that the Australian board had called for a press conference to announce that Warne was returning home due to failing a routine drug test.
Warne had tested positive for consuming a diuretic known as Moduretic. In what was a prescription drug widely used in the treatment of hypertension, high blood pressure and fluid retention, it was banned for its possible usage as a masking agent for steroids by diluting traces of the substance in the urine. The drug was also commonly used to reduce weight by ridding the body of any excess fluids.
“For Warnie [Shane Warne], who’s been playing international cricket for a decade, to ignore that approach is madness,” the then Australian captain Ricky Ponting was quoted as saying a night before captaining Australia for the first time in a World Cup.
Reason for Warne’s Ban
Upon his return in Melbourne, Warne admitted to consuming a tablet given to him by his mother on January 22 to make sure that he looks good in front of the camera and that it had nothing to do with making any banned substance. “Contrary to speculation, taking it had nothing to do with the treatment for my shoulder injury or for masking any banned substance,” Warne said.
In his defence, Warne also mentioned that he did not read the ACB’s playing conditions and that him consuming such a table without knowing about its components was “a reckless act, totally disregarding the consequences”. Warne also hinted at the torn packaging not allowing him to read the list of ingredients.
Warne was subsequently banned for a year contrary to ACB’s directive of banning him for two years. It is said that the leniency was adopted after listening to Dr. Peter Harcourt’s advise.
“Much of Warne’s evidence on these issues was unsatisfactory and the committee does not accept he was entirely truthful in his responses to questions about his knowledge of the ACB anti-doping policy. Coupled with that is his vague, unsatisfactory and inconsistent evidence about the extent of using a Moduretic,” read the finding.
In reply to the verdict, Warne asserted that the penalty was “very harsh” and that he is “extremely disappointed”. After serving a one-year ban, Warne represented Victoria 2nd XI against Queensland at the Junction Oval before representing Australia in the following tour of Sri Lanka.
“I admitted to the hearing that I had taken a tablet in early December. I was doing a lot of wine promotions. I’d had a couple too many bottles of wine and had a few late nights. I took a fluid tablet then. It was to get rid of a double chin. The December test showed small traces of the same thing. That was before my [shoulder] operation. That proves I didn’t take the fluid tablet to mask anything,” Warne had said in his statement.
Apart from Ponting’s criticizing remarks, Warne was also censured by Australia fast bowler Glenn McGrath and wicket-keeper batsman Adam Gilchrist. Chinaman spinner Brad Hogg had replaced Warne in the World Cup squad as the Aussies went on to lift their second consecutive title after beating India in the final match.
Post his comeback, Warne added to his tally of 193 ODIs by representing ICC World XI in a charity match against Asia XI. Other than that, Warne never got to play an ODI for Australia. At 37, Warne bid adieu to international cricket after the home Ashes in 2006-07.
The rapid spread of novel corona virus put the whole world to halt and lead every scheduled events to postpone. The deadly virus made its impact on scheduled sports event and made it to postpone.
As a result many sports personalities steps into social media platform to get entertain themself. In that order Kevin Pietersen perform actively in Instagram where he Interviewed Indian skipper Virat Kohli through Instagram live.
Having last played competitive cricket in 2018, Pietersen was also seen on the same platform alongside India limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma and spinner Yuzvendra Chahal recently.
In the video, a person, in full cricket kit inside a room, can be seen playing a defensive shot and then jumping on to a treadmill to run a single. “Whoever this is…GENIUS! Just been sent it on WhatsApp,” Kevin Pietersen captioned the video on Instagram. Kevin Pietersen has been very active on social media over the past few days and recently he has interviewed Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli on Instagram.
Kevin Pietersen, the former England batsman, rated former Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Asif as the best that he ever faced in his career. Pietersen shared a clip on his Twitter handle where Asif bowls a peach to get rid of Pietersen for a duck.
Pietersen wrote,” I think there’s plenty of batters from around the world that were happy he got banned! He was the best I faced! I had no idea against him!”.

I had no idea against him! https://t.co/AoN2xN2oX1
Mohammad Asif was banned from international cricket in 2011 after he was found guilty of being involved in a spot-fixing scandal. Asif got banned from international cricket for 7 years which ended his international career for Pakistan. Prior to this incident, Asif had played 23 Test matches for his country and scalped 106 with an economy rate of 3.0.
In limited-overs cricket, Mohammad Asif featured in 38 One-day Internationals (ODIs) and 11 T20 International (T20I) games. Asif scalped 46 batsmen in ODIs and claimed 13 wickets in T20Is. He also featured in the inaugural edition of the IPL and went on to play eight games for the Deccan Chargers back in 2008.
Former India batsman and current Member of Parliament from East Delhi Gautam Gambhir believes that the absence of the 13th season of the Indian Premier League will make it difficult for veteran wicket-keeper batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni to stage an international comeback.
Dhoni, who last played for India during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, missed the West Indies tour (and all subsequent series) last year due to his training for the parachute regiment of the Indian Army in Kashmir valley.
Dhoni was subsequently in the news in January when his name wasn’t to be found in the list of annually contracted Indian players. It was widely anticipated that a stellar IPL season might open doors for Dhoni’s international comeback keeping eyes on the ICC T20 World Cup 2020.
“If the IPL does not happen this year, then it will become very difficult for MS Dhoni to make a comeback. On what basis can he be selected since he’s not been playing for the last one or one and a half years,” Gambhir was quoted as saying during Star Sports Cricket Connected.
In Dhoni’s absence, India duly backed wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant before an injury saw him getting replaced by Lokesh Rahul.
In the 10 limited-over matches that Rahul has played as a specialist wicket-keeper batsman this year, he has scored 527 runs at an average of 65.87 and a strike rate of 125.77 including one century and four half-centuries. Throwing light on Rahul’s top form, Gambhir thinks that he “could be” Dhoni’s apt replacement.
“The apt replacement for Dhoni could be KL Rahul. Ever since he has donned the keeper’s gloves in white-ball cricket, I’ve seen his performance, both batting and keeping. Obviously his keeping is not as good as Dhoni’s, but if you are looking at T20 cricket, Rahul’s a utility player, can keep and bat at No. 3 or 4,” Gambhir said.
Gambhir, who expressed disappointment over Dhoni’s World Cup-winning six a fortnight ago, mentioned that hanging his boots should remain the former captain’s personal choice.
“If the IPL does not happen, then MS Dhoni’s chances for a comeback look dim. Ultimately, you are representing India, so whoever dishes out the best performance and can win the match for India should play for the team. As far as his retirement plans go by, that’s his personal choice,” Gambhir added.
Abraham Benjamin de Villiers (born 17 February 1984), is a South African cricketer. In limited overs cricket he is an attacking batsman. He was named as the ICC ODI Player of the Year three times during his 15-year international career. His name was also featured in Wisden Cricketers of the Decade at the end of 2019.
De Villiers captained South Africa in all three formats, although after a series of injuries he stepped down from the Test captaincy. In 2017 he stepped down from captaining the national limited-overs teams and in May 2018 announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket.
AB de’s intention for T20 world cup
However, in January 2020 De Villiers expressed his intention to make an international comeback and play for South Africa in the 2020 T20 World Cup.
He gets his last chance to get in to the International team for the last time. South Africa’s head coach Mark Boucher has given AB De Villiers a deadline of June 1 to make himself available for the selection. Where he could make his international return for the Proteas lineup against Sri Lanka this year.
He expect to attend the “selection” after IPL 2020, but the BCCI postponed the cash rich tournament to the mid of April. Due to the rapid spread of corona virus BCCI took this decision.
AB de villiers uncertain about comeback
“I can’t see six months into the future. If the tournament is postponed to next year a whole lot of things will change. At the moment I feel available, but at the same time I don’t know how my body will see it and if I will be healthy at that time,” De Villiers told Afrikaans-language Sunday newspaper ”Rapport”.
“…I might get to a point where I have to tell ”Bouch” (coach Mark Boucher) I was interested, I would like to play a role but I”m not going to be able to play myself. I’m afraid of such a commitment and creating false hope,” he added.
De Villiers said he does not feel entitled to walk into the South African team as has been alleged in the past.
“If I am 100 per cent as good as I want to be, then I will be available. But if I am not I won’t open myself up to that because I am not the type of person who does things at 80 percent. Then I have to do trials and show ”Bouchie” I’m still good enough.
“They should choose me because I’m really better than the guy next to me. I’ve never been the type of person who felt I should get just what I wanted.”
The expected huge event of the year 2020 too postponed due to the spread of novel corona virus. Men’s T20 world cup has been scheduled to play later this year in Australia. Due to the rapid spread the hosts too cancelled all the local and International games.
“I am uncertain about giving a definite answer because I have been very hurt and burned in the past. Then people will again think I have turned my back on our country. I can’t just walk into the team.
“…I have to work for my place and deserve it. It was very hurtful for me last year when people thought I assumed there was a place for me. I feel available and I will give it a go with everything I have, but I don’t want special treatment.”
If de Villiers can make a comeback, the credit would go to South Africa coach Mark Boucher, who convinced him to rethink his retirement decision, taken in 2018.
“I could write a book on ”Bouchie’s impact just on my life, never mind cricket. I rediscovered that when I played under him at the Spartans (in the Mzansi Super League) in December. He was born to be an instructor. When he talks there”s respect.”
“”Bouch” asked me why don’t I give it another go,” de Villiers said.
“I’ve always said to him, ”I’ve never not wanted to be there. I’ve always wanted to be there. It”s just, my life has changed”.”
Regards Indian former skipper MS Dhoni’s return many revealed their thoughts and plot the possibilities. Where Indian former player Sunil Gavaskar suggest Dhoni should retire silently and Sehwag advice team India to play with their current wicket keeper batsman.
Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar says he cannot fathom why Mahendra Singh Dhoni has “dragged it for so long” as the right time for the maverick ex-India skipper to call it quits was after last year’s ODI World Cup.
“This guy has served to the best of his ability. He should leave cricket with dignity. I don’t know why he dragged it for so long. He should have retired after the World Cup,” Akhtar told PTI from Islamabad.
“If I would have been in his place, I would have hung up my boots. I could have played shorter formats for three-four years but I left (after the 2011 WC) as I wasn’t into the game 100 per cent. So why drag?” he asked.
Team India former skipper MS Dhoni has been last seen in world cup semi final match against New Zealand where India lost the match. His name hit the media when BCCI announced the center contracted player list without MS Dhoni’s name.
“As a country, you should let him go with a lot of respect and dignity. Give him a nice send off. He has won you the World Cup and done wonders for India. He is a wonderful human being at the same time. But right now, he seems to be stuck,” he said.
“When he could not finish the game in the semifinal (against New Zealand). I felt he should have retired but he can only answer why he didn’t,” he said.
“He should have played a farewell series after the World Cup may be and then said goodbye in a manner befitting his great stature.”
Talking about the Indian team’s inability to win a global event since the 2013 Champions Trophy, Akhtar said Virat Kohli’s team needs match-winners in the middle-order.
“Winning tournaments is one thing but staying at top is another. India is still the top-ranked Test team and is almost among the top teams in the limited-overs format. So, we should not base their performance only on their showing in ICC events.”
“Of course, they should win ICC events and they have to. This team, when the top four score, they win more often than not. But if they don’t, then it is an issue. Another thing I noticed is that you need a match-winner like Yuvraj (Singh) or Dhoni in the middle-order,” he explained.
“When we toured India in 1998, we always thought we would run through India after getting the top order. There was no match winner until Yuvraj came in, followed by Dhoni.”
“Then you started seeing change in results. Right now, the problem is lack of finishers,” opined the 44-year-old.
After a period of 8 month MS Dhoni is set to play in IPL 2020 which could set as a platform for his International return. BCCI and Indian head coach too confirmed that MSD’s performance in IPL would drag him a slot in upcoming T20 world cup.
“Despite the loss in New Zealand, I think India is a very, very good team and can give a tough time to Australia. But again, India have to prove that like they did the last time.”
“However, I don’t see that series happening. My assessment is there won’t be any cricket for next one year. The T20 World Cup is not going to happen.”
“We are dealing with a pandemic at the moment. Any industry, which requires crowd gathering, is going to suffer,” Akhtar added.

“The global audience would be hooked by a match. Kapil said he doesn’t need the money and he surely doesn’t. But everyone else does. I think this suggestion will come into consideration soon,” he told a popular news outlet.

CSK’s bowling coach regards Dhoni
“MS is a natural athlete and supremely fit. He did not look rusty, did not look one bit like he was away from the game. He was clearly looking forward to the season, the way he was training, batting, keeping and being involved with the team,” Balaji said.
Lakshmipathy Balaji, CSK’s bowling coach, also claimed that Dhoni was looking forward to making his comeback and was training very hard to be fully fit for the competition.
The corona virus has brought all sports activities to a halt and players are practising social distancing and self-isolation during the pandemic. BCCI postponed the scheduled Indian Premier League to the mid of April. BCCI would face a huge lose if the upcoming IPL went down.
Nasser Husain on MSD’s return
Former England skipper Nasser Husain expressed his thoughts on MS Dhoni and why no one should not be “push him into retirement”.
“Once Dhoni is gone, there is no getting him back. There are some legends of the game, appreciating while around, because they are once-in-a-generation cricketer. Don’t push him into retirement too early,” Hussain said live on air.
“Only Dhoni knows his mental state. In the end, the selectors select and players turn up when asked to,” he further added.
The former Indian skipper MS Dhoni was last seen in action against New Zealand in the ICC World Cup semifinal, a game India lost. He made himself unavailable for India’s international assignments post the WC exit and was eventually dropped from the BCCI’s list of centrally contracted players in January.
52-year-old Nasser then went on to question: “Is MS Dhoni still good enough to get in the Indian side? It is as simple as that. That should apply for anyone across the board. What I have seen of Dhoni, I still think he has a huge amount to offer for Indian cricket.”
“Yes, its been one or two occasions where he (MSD) got it wrong in run-chases. There was a World Cup game in England where he sort of blocked at the end for some unknown reason, but in general MS Dhoni is still a really good talent and be careful what you wish for,” he elaborated.
Earlier BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and India head coach Ravi Shastri points out that, “Dhoni’s international future depends on his performances in IPL 2020 which comes in to consider him in T20 World Cup planned later this year in Australia”.
