The out break of corona virus made almost every event to postpone from it’s scheduled date. The deadly virus mark its presence in every nook and corner of the world and made the peoples to panic in fear.

    IPL Postponed amid COVID19

This deadly virus made the BCCI to postpone the cash rich Indian Premier League from it’s actual date. The 13th edition of IPL was planned to start from March 29 with it’s opening match between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings.

As the Indian government extend the lock down till May 3, the execution of postponed IPL gets in oscillation. BCCI seeks it’s all possible ways to host the tournament in order to prevent the huge loss which could make a dent in Indian economy.

The another major event of the year 2020 too face the same fate. The Asia cup was scheduled to begin in September. The host Pakistan decide to organise the event in UAE. The PCB states that talks of making changes in its dates are doing the rounds.

Earlier Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ehsan Mani has provided an update on the probable future of the Asia Cup amid coronavirus outbreak across the globe.

PCB’s Update on Asia cup 2020

“I have read and heard about these speculations but right now just remember that having or not having the Asia Cup is not a decision between Pakistan and India it involves other countries as well,” asserted Mani on Tuesday.

Pakistan were initially to host the event, but the location was shifted to Dubai and Abu Dhabi after India expressed reluctance to travel to the neighbouring country owing to security concerns.

“…it is important to have the Asia Cup if cricket activities resume by then because the development of Asian cricket depends on funding from the tournament. It is important for many countries who are members of the Asian Cricket Council,” he added in a podcast released by the PCB.

However, Mani also conceded that holding the Asia Cup this year is a big challenge because “we don’t know if it can be held or not.”

“But if the conditions change and we can have the Asia Cup, it must be held as earnings from it are distributed as development funds to member countries for next two years,” he said.

“The financial impact will be felt by many countries if the ICC can’t distribute their shares from the tournament. Many countries including Pakistan will feel the pinch,” he admitted.

Mani confirmed that Pakistan was to receive around USD 7 to 8 million in June and January.

“Pakistan is fortunate it has good financial controls in place and in short term, it will be better off than most countries if the lockdowns continue because of the coronavirus pandemic,” he claimed. “We are to get 7 to 8 Million dollars from the ICC in June but we know they might not come so we have planned accordingly,” he added.

What if India had not won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 Under MS Dhoni Captaincy?

    0
India wins T20 world cup in 2007
India wins T20 world cup in 2007

Back in 2007, India had been embarrassingly eliminated from the Cricket World Cup. They failed to even go past the first-round while Bangladesh, who were still finding their feet at the time, move to the Super 8’s in their stead.

That the first-ever T20 World Cup was in the same year was God sent for the men in blue as they exorcized their failures in the 50 over format by becoming the inaugural T20 Champions. But what if India had not won the event?

What if India lost to England or South Africa in the Super 8’s or what if they crashed out against the 50-over format World Cup holders Australia? What if Sreesanth dropped Misbah ul-Haq’s catch in the final against Pakistan?

Let us now explore all the possibilities.

What if India had not won the inaugural T20 World Cup?

The T20 World Cup featured 12 teams. Every country took the event very seriously and sent their A team to South Africa for the competition. India on the other hand, seemed to want to get the event over with. They sent a team full of young or fringe players and gave their senior players a rest.

A much younger MS Dhoni was given the reigns of the side but not much was expected from the wicketkeeper-batsman and his team. However, the side played fearlessly and with a bit of luck, skill and a lot of courage finally crossed the line in the end.

There is reason to believe that India’s victory helped popularise the format. However, the exciting nature of T20 meant that sooner or later, it would have been popular anyway. Although, India’s victory definitely gave it a jumpstart.

The T20 World Cup win is also credited with the rise of the Indian Premier League. However, the IPL would have begun regardless of India’s standing in the competition.

The then BCCI Vice President Lalit Modi revealed that they had been working on the idea 2 years before it was eventually announced at a high profile event in Delhi when asked if the IPL was a knee-jerk reaction to the formation of the Indian Cricket League; a rebel league threatening to rob the BCCI of their players and committee members.

So, what difference did India’s win actually make?

The Indian team was bereft of a captain after Rahul Dravid stepped down. The side was in the trenches and perhaps at it’s lowest morally. However, Dhoni’s young side seemed to not care about what was happening outside of the event.

Slowly, the rest of the country also seemed to be less and less worried about it.

The T20 World Cup victory gave the nation a tailor-made leader who had already shown his ability to inspire the side.

This was also perfect timing as it gave the Wicket-keeper batsman time to create aside in a manner he believed that would win them the 50-over World Cup as well. Many before him had tried and come agonizingly close but no once since Kapil Dev had achieved the feat.

In the series’ between, Dhoni kept on impressing everyone with his ability to keep his calm at crunch situations. His belief in his players and his ability to impart that composure onto them won many fans and pundits over.

After 4 years of hard and controversial calls, MS Dhoni built a side ready to conquer the world. Everything he had touched before had turned to gold but this was the one competition that perhaps mattered more than any other in the game.

Much like the T20 World Cup, Dhoni’s side conquered the world once again. This time, in a format, where they couldn’t even cross the first stage 4 years back. The demons had truly been vanquished and it all began at South Africa in 2007.

The rise and rise of MS Dhoni

A lot of what happened today would have still happened eventually. T20 would have boomed much like ODI cricket did before it. The IPL would have still happened and even revolutionize the sport.

Despite their condescending take on the format in the beginning, the BCCI would have warmed up to the format and the tournament much like they’ve opened up to the DRS now.

    MSD

However, without the victory, there would have been no MS Dhoni and perhaps even the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup win for India.

The Legendary keeper before the tournament was a promising player but no one would have thought that he would go on to capture the imagination of everyone. Leadership changed the way he carried himself.

Once a player who spoke of his desire to never let his strike rate fall below 100, he became one of the most responsible batsmen and arguably the country’s greatest finisher.

His glovework rapidly improved as well and it seemed that he could do no wrong.

Without that evening at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg though, none of this would have been possible.

On this day in 2011, the then Mumbai Indians captain Sachin Tendulkar registered his maiden Indian Premier League century against Kochi Tuskers Kerala in the 13th match of the fourth season of the tournament at the Wankhede Stadium.

Opening the batting with wicket-keeper batsman Davy Jacobs (12), Tendulkar hit a boundary off Kochi pacer Rudra Partap Singh in the first over itself. Having hit a boundary down the ground, Tendulkar then hit one on the off-side off R Vinay Kumar in the next over.

Having hit two more fours off Vinay Kumar in the last over, Tendulkar ran a single off the final delivery of the innings to end up scoring 100* (66) with the help of 12 fours and three sixes. The legendary batsman was aided by Ambati Rayudu’s fourth IPL half-century, 53 (33), as Mumbai scored 182/2 in 20 overs.

Tendulkar’s innings wasn’t enough for MI to register their third consecutive victory of the season as Kochi sealed the chase in just 19 overs on the back of individual half-centuries from their opening batsmen in Brendon McCullum (81) and captain Mahela Jaywardene (56).

The out break of corona virus made a huge impact globally. Many government advice and many imposed a total lock down globally. India too enroll it’s name in that list by imposing a lock down for 21 days.

Due to the rapid increase in spread, Indian government extend it’s lock down period till May 3. Due to this deadly and un expected virus spread many scheduled events has been postponed globally. BCCI too postponed it’s cash rich event Indian Premier League to April 15, but the lock down extent gets IPL execution in oscillation.

    0
BCCI is in Verge to Face a Huge Loss if IPL 2020 cancelled due to corona virus spread
BCCI is in Verge to Face a Huge Loss if IPL 2020 cancelled due to corona virus spread

The world’s richest cricket body, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), might be in big trouble if the 13th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) is cancelled. How big? A massive ₹ 3,800 crores.

IPL 13 was postponed until April 14 as a result of the novel coronavirus pandemic. However, considering the lockdown might be extended, there would be serious question marks over the future of the league.

The BCCI office-bearers would be trying hard to push the tournament sometime later this year. But to chalk out a window for even a curtailed IPL would be no less than a herculean task considering 2020’s packed cricketing calendar.

If at all cancellation occurs due to unforeseen reasons, it will be a massive financial blow for the BCCI and all the IPL stakeholders. Not only that, but no IPL in 2020 will also mean a sizable dent in the Indian economy.

Star India would be amongst the biggest losers. The country’s leading broadcaster had shelled out a whopping ₹ 16,347.50 crores (the biggest television deal in the history of cricket) for the worldwide media rights for a 5-year period between 2018 and 2022.

A cancellation would translate into a direct loss of ₹ 3269.50 crores for Star. This at the back of a loss of ₹1216 crore loss it suffered in the previous financial year would be a massive blow.

The title sponsorship rights for IPL had also sold for a huge figure of ₹ 2,000 crores to Chinese smartphone manufacturer Vivo. A cancelled 2020 IPL means a loss of ₹ 400 crores for BCCI.

Add to that a loss of ₹ 200 crores from central sponsorship, and the combined figure reaches ₹ 3,869.50 crores.

While it is slightly early to comment on whether a cancellation will occur, it does give BCCI some important lessons. The biggest amongst them is to have an insurance policy in place to counter unforeseen situations like the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Earlier on Wednesday, it was being reported that Wimbledon, which got cancelled recently, had received $ 141 million in insurance money. Although it won’t entirely cover the $ 250 million in losses due to a scrapped season, it does soften the blow.

Babar Azam averages over 50 in limited-overs formats, in Tests he averages 45.12 and was even appointed as Pakistan’s T20I captain last October.

“When people ask me about the comparison between Babar Azam with the likes of Virat Kohli and Steve Smith I would say he can do even better than Kohli but he needs a conducive atmosphere and the freedom to express himself more as a player and as captain.”

The out break of COVID-19 has made a huge impact on our day to day life. In order to control the spread many governments imposed a total lock down globally. Many scheduled events has been postponed due to this deadly corona virus.

The most awaited 13th edition of cash rich Indian Premier League too face the same fate. The tournament has been planned to start from March 29, due to the COVID fear BCCI postponed the IPL 2020 to the mid of April. As the Indian government extend the lock down the execution of IPL gets in oscillation.

    Dhoni’s return

The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was all set to be a trial ground for former Indian skipper MS Dhoni. Although some felt he was well past his prime, head coach Ravi Shastri had pointed out that the IPL will decide whether Dhoni deserved a spot in the Indian team for the year-end’s 2020 T20 World Cup.

Dhoni, who last played for India during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, missed the West Indies tour (and all subsequent series) last year due to his training for the parachute regiment of the Indian Army in Kashmir valley.

Dhoni was subsequently in the news in January when his name wasn’t to be found in the list of annually contracted Indian players. It was widely anticipated that a stellar IPL season might open doors for Dhoni’s international comeback keeping eyes on the ICC T20 World Cup 2020.

Regards Indian former skipper MS Dhoni’s return many revealed their thoughts and plot the possibilities. Where Indian former player Sunil Gavaskar suggest Dhoni should retire silently and Sehwag advice team India to play with their current wicket keeper batsman.

Australian bowler Brad Hogg too predict the possibilities of MS Dhoni’s return to International squad if IPL 2020 cancelled.

VVS Laxman regards MS Dhoni’s return

Laxman said that Dhoni has a couple of IPLs left in him. “Not only this IPL, but he (Dhoni) will also probably play in the next couple of IPLs, and then we will take a call about his future as a cricketer,” Laxman said Star Sports show Cricket Connected.

Laxman also said, “I think, playing for CSK will keep him going because he’s supremely fit and age is just a number, and especially when someone like MS Dhoni is not only physically fit, but mentally very astute as a captain as a leader he enjoys leading the CSK franchise”.

“Dhoni will be very clear, as far as his plans are concerned, I’m sure he must have communicated that with (captain) Virat Kohli, (coach) Ravi Shastri immediately after the 2019 World Cup in England,” said Laxman.

“The new selection committee will have to sit down with MS Dhoni and understand his future, as far as Indian cricket is concerned. But MS Dhoni will continue to play for CSK and do well for CSK,” said Laxman.

India successfully defeats Australia during the 2018-19 test series and crown the un expected victory. India defeats the Australia when their star players Steve Smith and David Warner were out of team.

Now talking about the Test series which is to be played later in the year, Australia’s Nathan Lyon says that while all focus is on Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara is like the ‘new wall’.

Pujara was the star of the series the last time India toured Australia and the right-hander was sure to give a tough time to the Aussie bowling unit.

However, Lyon, who gave the batsman the title once given to Rahul Dravid, said he will not allow Pujara to fly under the radar. He added that the Australian bowling attack will have their plans in place for the new wall of India’s batting order.

“I think Pujara flies under the radar a little bit when you look at the Indian side,” Lyon was as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.

“Obviously you look at Rahane and Virat and these guys. But Pujara is a wall. He’s the new wall I should say. It helps that he played exceptionally well last time out here. He adapted his game. He had a bit of luck which is what you need when you’re playing at the top level.

“He obviously played his absolute backside off, which for India was good to see but we’re going to have to make sure that come this summer we have to come with some new plans to combat Pujara. As I said, he flies under the radar a little bit – he definitely won’t be flying under the radar come this summer,” he further added.

As for their clash, India and Australia are scheduled to play a four-match Test series later this year as part of the World Test Championship.

However, it is being speculated that the series might end up taking place without any crowds due to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, as noted commentator Harsha Bhogle stated, the IPL’s uncertain future owing to the coronavirus pandemic has put serious question marks over Dhoni’s chances of making a dream return to cricket. Now, former Indian cricketer, K Srikkanth has also shown concerns over MS Dhoni’s future.

“I am not going to be diplomatic. I am talking about if I was the chairman of the selection committee, what would I do. If the IPL does not happen then his chances are very, very bleak. Because straightaway, in my opinion, KL Rahul will be the wicketkeeper-batsman. Rishabh Pant, I still think he might be a bit of a doubt, but I believe that Rishabh Pant is highly talented.”

Krishnamachari Srikkanth said on Star Sports’ talk show Cricket Connected.

“So, I wouldn’t mind taking him along with the squad, but definitely, if the IPL doesn’t happen, then Dhoni will have a difficult time getting back into the team for the T20 World Cup. Let’s be very honest about it. He is absolutely fit, he is a legend, he is brilliant. I am a great fan of Dhoni myself. But the question is for the World Cup team. So you’ll have to put the Indian team first and then the individuals.”

Earlier, IANS had quoted Shastri as saying that, “It all depends on when he starts playing and how he is playing during the IPL. What are the other people doing with the wicket-keeping gloves or what is the form of those players as opposed to Dhoni’s form? The IPL becomes a massive tournament because that could be the last tournament after which more or less your 15 is decided.

“There might be one player who might be there and thereabouts in case of an injury or whatever. But your team I would say would be known after the IPL. What I would say is rather than speculating on who is where wait for the IPL to get over and then you are in a position to take a call on who are the best 17 in the country.”
