Vijay Shankar opts out of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

The 29-year-old is expected to return home from Kolkata once the league phase of the tournament concludes.

“Shankar will be flying back to Chennai on January 19. TN’s final league clash is against Bengal on January 18. So, we will have Shankar playing the first five games,” a source close to the development told TOI on Wednesday.

Shankar has already informed the TNCA and selectors about his unavailability. It is learned that the team think-tank is in no hurry to name a vice-captain for the knockouts.

“We have selected Shankar for the job and as the tournament progresses a call will be taken as to who will be the vice-captain (for the knockouts),” a TNCA official mentioned. It is clear that the TNCA will not have a replacement for Shankar in the knockout stages.

“Due to the prevailing quarantine restrictions, we are not keen to send in a new player into the squad and will manage with the current squad in the knockout stages,” said the TNCA official.

Murali Vijay Pulls out of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

Earlier another Tamil Nadu player Murali Vijay announced his unavailability for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy tournament.

Vijay last played for Tamil Nadu during their Ranji Trophy clash against Karnataka at Dindigul in 2019. Murali had featured in three matches for the Chennai Super Kings during the IPL-13.

Vijay was earlier named in the state probables for the domestic T20 competition.

“It is a very big blow for us ahead of the season because he is an experienced campaigner and brings solidity at the top. But his absence gives other players an opportunity to make an impact for the stateside,” said the official.

TN to start practice on Friday

TN will commence their practice sessions in Kolkata once their quarantine period concludes on January 7 (Thursday). The team underwent their third covid-19 test on Wednesday afternoon and the results are expected to be out on Thursday. TN, part of the Elite B group, will open their campaign against Jharkhand on January 10.

Where Will be IPL 2021 Hosted? In India or in UAE, BCCI Clarifies

    IPL 2021
    IPL trophy

“Where will be IPL 2021 hosted?” in UAE or in India, the question gets into talk once the BCCI announced the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021 schedule. Instead in India IPL 2020 has hosted by UAE owing to the COVID-19 issue.

While everyone expects the IPL 2021 to be hosted at home(India) the pandemic has not yet settled to confirm the announcement. In this peculiar situation, BCCI announced the domestic Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021 schedule. This move expects the fans to believe that BCCI will host the IPL 2021 in India.

Where will be IPL 2021 hosted?

As of everyone BCCI too wants to hold the IPL 2021 in India. There is no clarity whether the Indian Premier League in 2021 will be held in India or the United Arab Emirates.

Now, a news report in the Mumbai Mirror says that the IPL being held in India will depend largely on how the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament pans out. “How we approach the next IPL is dependent on how the Mushtaq Ali plays out,” a BCCI member told the Mumbai Mirror.

    IPL 2021 Venue

The IPL Governing Council discussed the possibilities of limited venues in its first meeting on Monday.

“The MoU with the Emirates Cricket Board has been signed for long-term so shifting it to UAE like in 2020 won’t be too much of a hassle,” revealed a BCCI insider.

“It will be best to wait for a month more and judge the possible impact of the pandemic on the IPL.”

The Governing Council is understood to have factored in the possibility of restricting the IPL venues in India, instead of allotting games to the base city of every franchise.

“Yes, that’s something that will need to be looked at. Four or five at the most, ideally to maintain bio-secure bubbles, but the franchises will have to be taken into confidence for that,” added the source.

The next GC meeting will see the venue for the tournament decided but as of now the board are adopting a wait and watch approach as they want to see how the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy happens.

The preparation for the tournament has already started with teams reaching their respective venues. The league stage will get underway on January 10 at six different venues – Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Baroda, Indore, and Chennai.

The knockout stage of the tournament will take place in Ahmedabad. The final is on January 31.

    IPL 2021 Auction Date

IPL 2021 expects to start with a Mega Auction if the tournament is played with a set of 10 franchises. Post the BCCI AGM, the board confirms that IPL 2021 will be held as usual with the set of 8 teams.

So the execution of mega auction seems to be in its least possible. The franchises may be asked to confirm retained players by January 21 and a trading window may continue till the end of the month. The IPL 2021 Player’s Auction will be scheduled around February 10.

The BCCI is expected to formally announce the timelines later this week, once president Sourav Ganguly is discharged from the hospital.

Former Indian Cricketer Ashish Nehra Picks Saini over T Natarajan

Indian former cricketer Ashish Nehra said Navdeep Saini should get the nod ahead of Shardul Thakur and T Natarajan. Nehra believes Saini’s extra pace and bounce will come in handy at the SCG.

Ashish Nehra Picks Saini over Natarajan

With Sydney Test just around the corner, the spot for India’s third seamer is getting heated up with T Natarajan getting the promotion. Natarajan was a net bowler initially but was named as a replacement to Umesh Yadav.

This development came after Shardul Thakur, who was also picked as a net bowler, was included in the Test squad as a replacement to Mohammad Shami.

    T Natarajan
    T Natarajan

This leaves Navdeep Saini in a precarious position who was originally picked in the Test squad when the team was picked a couple of months ago. Fans are now wondering who would Rahane play alongside Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj. Well, former India seamer Ashish Nehra backed Saini to make the cut.

“If you look at squad composition, Saini was the first choice and Shardul and Natarajan both came in as replacements for Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav,” Ashish Nehra.

“So if Saini was ahead of them during initial Test squad selection, I don’t see any reason why he would slip down in the pecking order. You selected him first, so obviously, you believed he was better than the other two. Isn’t it?”

Nehra explains why he picks Saini

Nehra explained how Saini can trouble the Australian batsmen, whom he believes are vulnerable against short-pitched stuff, by using the pace and bounce that he can generate with his height.

    Navdeep Saini
    Navdeep Saini

The former pacer pointed out that Natarajan is still inexperienced at the longest format Saini seems to be a better pick at this moment.

“Navdeep’s biggest assets are bounce and extra pace. This is a Test match. How does Natarajan normally get his wickets? When people are trying to hit him. Also, you haven’t tested Natarajan by playing him for India A like you did with Mohammed Siraj, who has risen through the ranks,” Nehra said.

“Similarly, Navdeep has also come up the ranks having been on multiple red ball tours of India A. In Test matches, batsmen normally don’t get out. You have to get them out. That’s the difference.

On the Sydney pitch, you will require a bit more pace and Navdeep has that. There shouldn’t be any debate as such. Sydney pitches what I saw during white-ball games, it was very flat.

“So when kookaburra seam will flatten out after some time, you will require that extra pace that Navdeep has, and also he can get a bit of reverse swing. Also, this Australian team is susceptible to short-pitched bowling, unlike Matthew Hayden or Ricky Ponting of yesteryears. Navdeep can be used better as he bowls a mean bouncer compared to a Natarajan or Shardul.”

Virat Kohli’s Personal Investment in MPL Raises Conflict of Interest

Indian captain Virat Kohli finds himself in the Conflict of Interest web over his investment in a company that owns the online gaming platform Mobile Premier League (MPL). MPL is BCCI‘s official kit sponsor and merchandise partner.

Virat Kohli – MPL Brand Ambassador

A report in the Indian Express states that Kohli –  named brand ambassador of MPL in January 2020 – was ‘allotted 68 CCDs with a face value of Rs 10, each issued at a premium of Rs 48,990 (Rs 33.32 lakh)’, which will be converted into equity shares at the end of 10 years and the Indian skipper will end up having 0.051 percent stake in the company, Galactus Funware Technology Private Limited, which owns the gaming platform.

MPL as Team India Kit sponsor

The BCCI on November 17, 2020, had announced MPL Sports as the official kit sponsors for team India as part of a three-year deal.

    BCCI MPL

The designed and manufactured jerseys will be worn by Men’s, Women’s, and the Under-19 Indian cricket teams. Under the partnership, MPL Sports has entered into a three-year agreement from November 2020 to December 2023. MPL Sports’ association with the BCCI began with India’s tour of Australia, 2020-21.

The report further adds that Galactus also issued 34 CCDs worth Rs 16.66 lakh to Cornerstone Sports LLP, the CEO of which, Amit Arun Sajdeh, is ‘Kohli’s partner in two other limited liability partnership firms — Magpie Venture Partners LLP and Virat Kohli Sports LLP’.

A top BCCI official told the national daily that the board is not aware of Kohli and Cornerstone having a stake in MPL while another official said, as quoted in the report, “He (Kohli) is an influential figure in Indian cricket and such interconnections aren’t ideal for good governance.”

In July last year, Kohli’s conflict of interest issue was raised to Ethics Officer DK Jain. Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association life member Sanjeev Gupta Gupta had spoken about Kohli’s business ventures and said that it comes across that it is in violation of the Lodha Panel recommendations that were approved by the Supreme Court while the new BCCI Constitution was registered.

Documents submitted with the complaint showed Kohli is a ‘designated partner’ of Cornerstone Venture Partners Llp, with Sajdeh and Binoy Bharat Khimji. This is a sister concern of Cornerstone, which manages sportspersons including India cricketers KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant, Umesh Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav, Shubman Gill and Kohli himself. Sajdeh and Khimji are in the management of Cornerstone, with two others.

Legendary Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Akhtar, who is known for his blunt criticism of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as well as its players, took to social media to post a video in which he slammed the PCB management for its average policies which has resulted in average cricketers.

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls scripted the third-highest partnership for the Kiwis in the longest format of the game as the hosts completely dominated the Pakistan bowlers.

    Shoaib Akhtar Slams PCB

“The policies of the Pakistan Cricket Board is seeing them get what they had sowed. They keep bringing and playing average players, and they keep making an average team and will continue to do average work and because of this, average results will keep coming,” Akhtar said in a video he shared on Twitter.

“Whenever Pakistan will play Test cricket, they will be exposed. They are playing school-level cricket and the management has made them school-level cricketers. And now they are again thinking to change the management but when will you change?” he added.

New Zealand vs Pakistan 2nd Test

Having already lost the first Test at the Bay Oval, the Mohammad Rizwan-led Pakistan are facing the prospect of an innings defeat and a 0-2 whitewash in Christchurch after Kane Williamson (239) and Henry Nicholls (157) accumulated the third-highest stand for New Zealand in Test cricket.

The duo forged a record 369-run-stand for the 4th wicket and as if that wasn’t enough, all-rounder Daryll Mitchell stroked his maiden Test ton as New Zealand eventually declared at 6/659.

Pakistan had to bat out 11 overs before stumps and Kyle Jamieson sent back Shan Masood (0) to the pavilion. The visitors ended the day on 8/1 — trailing New Zealand by 354 runs.

New Zealand is leading the two-match series against Pakistan as they secured a 101-run win in the first game.

Steve Waugh Claims Rahul Dravid as Important to Team India than Sachin

Steve Waugh Spells Dravid as an important player than Sachin

Former Australia captain Steve Waugh believes Rahul Dravid was as important to the Indian cricket team as Sachin Tendulkar was in the early 2000s, saying that Dravid was the glue that held the team together.

Steve Waugh Spells Dravid as an important player than Sachin

Waugh, who had played his last Test match against India during the 2004 series Down Under at his home ground in Sydney, said that both Dravid and Tendulkar formed the heart of what was arguably India’s best batting line-up.

Steve Waugh praised Dravid’s concentration levels while out in the middle and said that he could hold even the best of bowling attacks at bay, a trait of any world-class batsman.

    Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid
    Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid

“He was unflappable, fierce concentration, there was no point in trying to ruffle his feathers because you couldn’t do it. He was the glue who held them all together and the one banker they had in the side,” Steve Waugh said in a video posted by Cricket Australia.

“I knew he was going to score runs, I knew he could occupy the crease and he could repel quality bowling which quality players can do. If he stepped up the gear he could play shots as good as anyone, he was a world-class player and equally hard to overcome as Tendulkar was.”

Furthermore, Waugh praised the way Dravid could raise his game on the biggest of occasions and when it mattered the most, citing the famous Test match at Kolkata in 2001 as proof.

“His concentration and defence was impregnable when he wants be and he had that fierce competitive attitude too, the big games really excited him, that’s when he played his best.

“Once he got in, it was so hard. Obviously, the most famous (innings of Dravid) is Kolkata win, he and Laxman batted all day. Pretty much turned the Test around. That was an unwinnable Test match.

“He was as important to the Indian side as was Sachin Tendulkar. Those guys formed the heart of what was probably India’s best batting lineup.”

Syed Mushtaq Ali Players Complains About the Quality of Food Served

Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy players made a complaint about food quality

Three domestic cricket teams staying at a posh hotel in Mumbai have complained about its mediocre food to the Indian cricket board during six days of quarantine, in preparation for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

The T20 tournament will begin on January 10 and will kickstart domestic cricket during the pandemic. Delhi, Mumbai, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Puducherry are the six teams based in Mumbai.

Delhi has star players like Shikhar Dhawan and Ishant Sharma, while Kerala has S Sreesanth, Robin Uthappa, and Sanju Samson. Mumbai has IPL stars like Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, and Dhawal Kulkarni.

The Mumbai manager Arman Mallik confirmed that players did complain about the quality of food served for the last two days while in isolation for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy tournament.

“Players complained to us that food’s quantity and quality is below standard. The food is not adequate in terms of players’ fitness. These players will be playing after six days of quarantine and this food won’t do any good,” Mallik said.

Players did complain about the quality of food

The IE spoke to ten players across three teams who had similar views. Many said the food was too cold and that even the breakfast was below standard.

The respective team managers have spoken to the hotel chef and were assured of better quality but that didn’t happen. The teams have also complained about food being delivered late. It was then that the teams approached the Indian board to look into the matter at the earliest.

“The roti has been like papad. They are serving rice which many players don’t eat, especially fast bowlers. They fear they could gain weight with this food. We need at least an egg or one grilled chicken,” a player said.

Poor quality food was being served

Many players have requested to allow outside food but it was denied until the quarantine period is completed. Domestic players say that ordering from room service daily is too expensive. One player said that grilled chicken costs Rs 2,000 as per the room menu.

The BCCI has taken nearly ninety rooms for the tournament and the officials have informed the management of the teams that they will look into the issue. The Indian board has taken care of providing accommodation this season to ensure teams get a safe entry into the bio-bubble for the tournament.

Indian batsman KL Rahul has been ruled out of the ongoing Australia Test series with a wrist injury. The BCCI confirmed the development in the early morning hours of Tuesday, two days before the start of the third Test in Sydney.

KL Rahul ruled out of Australia Test Series

The BCCI statement reads as “KL Rahul sprained his left wrist while batting in the nets at the MCG during Team India’s practice session on Saturday. The wicketkeeper-batsman will not be available for the remaining two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as he will need about three weeks time to recover completely and regain full strength”.

“He will now return to India and head to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for further rehabilitation of his injury.”

    Multiple injuries strike Team India

Team India already miss the service of Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami now gets a strike in the batting lineup. Mohammed Shami ruled out of the Test series after suffering from a wrist fracture while batting in the second innings of the first Test.

While Umesh Yadav was also ruled out of the series after the completion of the second match. Though team India has multiple bowling back up the blow in the batting line up really worries team India fans.

India also misses the service of Indian skipper Virat Kohli who return to India on the basis of paternity leave is considered as a massive blow for Team India at the beginning.

Rohit Sharma returns to Test series

Though Hitman Rohit Sharma joins the squad for the 3rd Test against Australia his peak performance on the ground still remains doubtful. Rohit who played his last international match in the New Zealand tour shows a decent form in the IPL 2020.

After a lot of controversies, Rohit got his spot back in the Test squad after clearing his fitness test. Hitman who missed the ODI and T20I series is expected to make an impact in the 3rd Test match against Australia.

The Border-Gavaskar trophy is currently level at 1-1, with India making a remarkable comeback after the infamous ’36-all-out’ in the first Test in Adelaide. The Ajinkya Rahane-led side produced a dominating performance in the Boxing Day Test to beat the hosts by 8 wickets.

England cricketer Moeen Ali has tested Covid-19 positive on arrival in Sri Lanka. He has tested positive at Hambantota Airport on arrival and will undergo a self-isolation for ten days.

England cricket team have got exemptions as they are the only one to travel outside the United Kingdom when the outside world has isolated them for the emergence of a new variant of Covid-19.

    Moeen Ali Tested COVID-19 Positive

“Following PCR tests administered on arrival at the airport in Hambantota on Sunday 3rd January, The England and Wales Cricket Board can confirm that Moeen Ali has tested positive for COVID-19,” the ECB said in a release.

The ECB, in its media release, said Moeen Ali will now isolate himself for 10 days as per Covid protocols laid out by the Sri Lankan government.

    Chris Woakes too Isolated

Apart from Ali, one more England player Chris Woakes has been deemed to be a possible close contact and will also observe self-isolation till further testing.

    Chris Woakes

“Ali will now observe a period of 10-days self-isolation, in accordance with the Sri Lanka Government’s protocol on quarantine,” the ECB said in its release.

“Chris Woakes has been deemed as a possible close contact, and he will observe a period of self-isolation and further testing,” it added.

“The touring party will be PCR tested for a second time on Tuesday morning. At this stage, the team will train for the first time on Wednesday,” the ECB stated in its release.

Moeen’s management company released a series of tweets shortly after the ECB’s announcement which said “Moeen is well and has taken all the relevant precautions but it just goes to show that this virus can strike at any time”.

    Ali’s Replacement

Moeen’s likely absence for the first Test leaves England with just two spinners, Dom Bess and Jack Leach, in their squad. They may consider calling up Mason Crane, Matt Parkinson or Amar Virdi from the reserve list to compensate. Woakes may also miss out on the first Test although England have sufficient fast-bowling cover in the squad.
