Report : BCCI President Sourav Ganguly Updates on IPL 2020 Possibilities

    IPL 2020 updates

After the ICC meeting on Wednesday deferred yet again the decision on the fate of T20 World Cup, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly stated that the board is working on all ‘possible options’ for the IPL to be held this year.

In a letter to affiliated associations, Ganguly wrote that there’s a keen interest from all stakeholders including cricketers and fans alike to stage the suspended season and BCCI will conduct the event even if it means playing matches behind closed doors.

“The BCCI is working on all possible options to ensure that we are able to stage the IPL this year, even if it means playing the tournament in empty stadiums. The fans, franchisees, players, broadcasters, sponsors and all other stakeholders are keenly looking forward to the possibility of IPL being hosted this year,” Ganguly was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

“Recently a lot of players, both from India and other countries, participating in IPL have also shown their keenness on being a part of this year IPL. We are optimistic and the BCCI will shortly decide on the future course of action on this,” it added.

The IPL has found backing from several high-profile international cricketers including Pat Cummins, Jos Buttler, Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith among others.

The fact that Ganguly shot the letter after the ICC meeting makes it a significant development.

Should the T20 World Cup, scheduled to be hosted by Australia in October-November, be cancelled, it will open up a window for the BCCI to conduct IPL in some form.

There’s another hope for the annual T20 league – Cricket Australia seems to be more interested in hosting India for a full tour later this year rather than T20 World Cup.

The main reason behind the decision being delayed is the improving coronavirus situation in Australia and ICC wants to make a well informed decision.

“We will only get one chance to make this decision and it needs to be the right one and as such we will continue to consult with our Members, broadcasters, partners, governments and players and to ensure that we make a well informed decision,” ICC chief executive Manu Sawhney said in a statement.

“The situation surrounding the global pandemic is evolving rapidly and we want to give ourselves the best possible opportunity to make the right decision for the whole sport. The health and well-being of everyone involved is our priority and other considerations fall out from that,” he added.

India Haven’t Produced a Better Captain Than Sourav Ganguly: Shoaib Akhtar

While the floor is open for debate over the greatest Indian captain, Pakistan fast bowling legend Shoaib Akhtar has a clear choice – his former rival Sourav Ganguly.

Ganguly is often credited with building an Indian team which was taken to another level by MS Dhoni who won India two world cup trophies in 2007 (T20 World Cup) and 2011 (ODI World Cup).

Akhtar, who took 444 wickets during his injury-plagued international career, praises Dhoni for his leadership skills but rates Ganguly above him.

“If I talk about India, then it will be Sourav Ganguly. India haven’t produced a better captain than him. Dhoni is very good, he’s a superb captain but when you talk about team building then Ganguly did a great job,” Akhtar said in an interview in Helo app.

During career, Akhtar always felt India were incapable of beating them outside of world cup but then Ganguly changed that during the 2004 Pakistan tour.

“I never thought India could beat us outside of a World Cup game. I toured India in 1999, we won in Chennai, we lost in Delhi but we won in Kolkata again, we won in Sharjah,” Akhtar recalled. “When India came in Pakistan in 2004 under Ganguly’s leadership I got a feeling that this team can beat Pakistan and they did that.”

He continued, “The bravery and capability you can understand through this. He brought that transformation into the Indian side. I’m a huge fan of Bengalis, they are, strong, courageous and they are the ones who fight at the forefront.”

Shoaib Akhtar on Sachin’s Possible Records in Modern Era

Shoaib Akhtar predicts that Sachin Tendulkar would scored more than 1.30 lakh runs if he played in modern cricket era. Indian cricket legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar is considered as god of cricket for various reasons. The records created by Sachin Tendulkar still stands as a dream for many young cricketers. The legend steps down from cricket after completing his 200 ODI matches in 2013.

With the #BlackLivesMatter movement gaining steam after the death of George Floyd, West Indies cricketer Darren Sammy became the first cricketer to reveal he was subjected to a racial slur by Ishant Sharma during cash-rich Indian Premier League. Now, it is former India cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra who has narrated his encounter with racism. He said he was referred to as a ‘Paki’ when he was playing in the English County.

He accused two South African cricketers from the opposition of using the term against him.

“We (cricketers) at one point or the other, have been victims of racism. I remember when I used to play league cricket in England, there were two South African is one of the opposition teams and both of them really went on an abusive spree. Even when I was at the non-striker’s end, they were after my life. They were constantly calling me Paki,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

Chopra also went onto educate fans about the term, which is often regarded as a term to a Pakistani national, but it is not.

“Now many believe Paki is a short form of Pakistan but that is not true. If you are brown skinned. If you’re anywhere from Asian subcontinent, this term is used to racially abuse. You’re called Paki, and nobody likes it. The moment you call anybody Paki in England, you know the intention behind it. That’s what happened with me at that time. My team stood by me but the truth is the person in front of me was doing it.”

    India tour of Sri Lanka

According to the report, the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) has given the nod to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) for the tour, according to a report in ‘The Island’.

The series was originally slated to take place in July, but was put on hold due to the pandemic. India was supposed to play three ODIs and the same number of T20Is during the brief tour. By the looks of it, it seems the tour will take place, but not as scheduled.

With most governments relaxing the lockdown with allowing travel, the SLC is confident it will get the clearance to conduct the series. The series would also help the revenue of the SLC, who have incurred losses, like most cricket boards during the testing times.

Darren Sammy Claimed he too face Racism during IPL

West Indies’ two-time world cup winning captain Darren Sammy had earlier created flutters when he claimed to have been referred to by a derogatory term during his IPL stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Sammy alleged that he was told that a certain word, used to mock someone with dark skin colour, meant a strong stallion and that he recently came to know about its real meaning. On Tuesday, he asked those who used that term to come out and admit their mistakes.

    Chris Gayle’s Reply to Sammy

Gayle, had earlier said that racism is prevalent in cricket as well, backing Sammy’s allegations.

“It’s never too late to fight for the right cause or what you’ve experienced over the years! So much more to your story, @darensammy88. Like I said, it’s in the game!!,” Gayle had tweeted.

Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar admires Yuvraj Singh‘s six hitting ability as Yuvi completed one year of his retirement today (June 10).

One of India’s finest all-rounders, Yuvraj featured in 40 Tests, 304 ODIs and 58 T20Is for India. He donned the India colours for the last time in 2017 as an indifferent form and injury issues forced him out of national reckoning.

Tendulkar took to Twitter to write: “It`s been a year since You(Vi) retired… My first memory of you was during the Chennai camp and I couldn`t help but notice that you were very athletic and deceptively quick at Point. I needn`t talk about your 6 hitting ability, it was evident you could clear any ground in the world.”

Man Who Hit 6 Sixes in Six Balls :

September 19, 2007, a date which Indian cricket fans can never forget. It was on this very day back Yuvraj Singh set Kingsmead on fire hitting six sixes in an over bringing the world to its feet.

In the first edition of the T20 World Cup in South Africa, India were in a tight spot as they had to beat England in their group game to keep their chances alive of making it to the semi-finals in Durban.

The drama began when the Men in Blue were on 171/3 at the end of the 18th over in their first innings. With Yuvraj and then skipper M.S. Dhoni at the crease the duo was looking to finish off on a high by collecting as many runs in the death overs.

Yuvraj smashed Andrew Flintoff for two fours in the 18th over, which infuriated the England bowler. The pair got involved in a big altercation which came to an end after the intervention from the on-field umpires.

However, what the verbal altercation did was that it pumped up Yuvraj and it was Stuart Broad who bore the brunt of his onslaught in the very next over.

In the 19th over of the innings, the left-handed batsman from Punjab made sure England paid the price for their over-aggressiveness and hit six maximums of consecutive deliveries from Broad.

WATCH : Hardik Pandya Recalls MS Dhoni’s Strategy Against Bangladesh in 2016 WT20

Hardik Pandya's last over in India vs Bangladesh T20 2016

Going down memory lane, India all-rounder Hardik Pandya recalled his heroics in the last over of the 2016 World T20 (now known as T20 World Cup) group stage match against Bangladesh in Bengaluru and credited former India skipper MS Dhoni for it.

Three wickets in three balls (two caught outs and one run-out) helped India beat Bangladesh by one solitary run and continued their progress in the tournament.

But at one point, the match was all but lost for Team India before Pandya rose to the occasion and helped the hosts snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

    Game Changer Hardik Pandya

As Bangladesh needed 11 runs off the last over to win, Mahmudullah took a single off the first ball. Mushfiqur then hit back-to-back boundaries to put his team on the verge of their greatest wins ever.

“Even at that time if I was there I would’ve taken a single to secure the win and then go for that signature shot or highlight shot. So I was like what was the most difficult ball if anyone wants to take a single?” Pandya told Cricbuzz.

“I thought back of length is something if you wanna hit it”s not that easy and even if you wanna take single it”s difficult as you have to get around and play it properly. But he went for the big shot and got out,” Pandya added.

On the next delivery, Mahmudullah also went for the expansive shot and was caught out at mid-wicket. Pandya revealed how luck played an integral part at this crucial juncture of the game.

“The next ball I went for the yorker, it turned out to be a full toss. It was just destiny, it happened because it had to happen, I didn’t do anything special there,” he said.

MS Dhoni’s Strategy Behind Pandya’s Delivery

Pandya then lifted the lid on the conversation with then-wicket-keeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and then-fast-bowler Ashish Nehra. He revealed the duo urged him not to bowl a bouncer and Pandya went ahead with their suggestion.

“I don’t remember exactly but few people gave suggestions ‘let’s bowl a bouncer’ but we were not up for it because Mahi bhai and Ashu bhai also said that if a tail-ender tries to swing and gets a top edge then it could fly over the keeper. So he said let”s just go with wide outside off stump,” Pandya said.

“I bowled it a bit too wide and after that I lost my voice.”

As Pandya’s wide delivery was missed by batsman Shuvagata Hom, Dhoni, who was waiting with just one glove on, picked up the ball and ran full speed to take off the bails before non-striker Mustafizur Rahman could get his bat inside the crease.

Third umpire was called on to make the decision and as out was flashed on the big screen, Pandya’s heroics and India”s great escape was completed.

MS Dhoni Revives Unconscious Bird, Daughter Ziva Shares Story on Instagram

    Dhoni revives a bird

While his India teammates have been making regular appearances on various social media platforms with cricket coming to a halt due to the coronavirus pandemic, MS Dhoni has maintained his distance.

However, every now and then, a clip or a photo emerges of the former India captain that throws some light on how he’s spending his time during the lockdown.

There was a short clip that first made the headlines showing a bearded Dhoni playing with his pet dog. Recently, he was photographed driving a tractor.

His latest exploit makes him sort of a superhero.

Dhoni’s daugher Ziva has shared an adorable story on her Instagram handle on how her father helped revive an unconscious bird she found lying on their lawn in Ranchi.

“Today in the evening on my lawn I saw a bird lying unconscious,” Ziva wrote. “I shouted for papa and mumma. Papa held the bird in his hand and made her have some water. After some time it opened its eyes. All of us were very happy. We placed her in a basket on top of some leaves.”

The bird, known as Coppersmith, got better and later flew away with Ziva hoping to see her again.

“Mumma told me it is crimson-breasted Barbet and is also called Coppersmith. What a pretty, pretty little bird. Then suddenly it flew off. I wanted it to stay, but mumma told me she had gone to her mom. I am sure I will see her again!” she wrote.

Before the coronavirus upended the world, Dhoni was religiously practising for the now-suspended season of IPL where he was to lead Chennai Super Kings, a team that he has led to three titles so far.

IPL was also expected to be the platform where Dhoni, who hasn’t played competitive cricket for nearly a year now, was to launch his bid for India comeback.

WATCH : Sachin Tendulkar Breaks Silence on Saliva Ban in Post COVID-19 Matches and Suggest This as an Alternative

    0
Sachin Tendulkar's alternative for Saliva in cricket
Sachin Tendulkar's alternative for Saliva in cricket

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar wants the introduction of a second new ball in Tests after every ’50 or 55′ overs to aid fast bowlers on flat or unresponsive pitches as ICC on Tuesday banned the usage of saliva on an interim basis, piling more pressure on pacers.

In an interaction with former star Australian pacer Brett Lee on social media platform 100 MB, the batting maestro spoke about the challenges of using only sweat that could pose major challenges for bowler and fielding team. Tendulkar feels the usage of saliva was important to shine the ball.

“In Test cricket, suddenly if the surfaces are not good, the standard of playing I feel drops down. And above all the game slows down because, the batters knows if I don’t play a stupid shot here, no one can get me out and the bowler knows, on this surface I have to be patient,” Tendulkar said.

“But why not then to get the game moving, have a new ball after every 45-50 or 55 overs because in ODI cricket we have to play only 50 overs, and you have two new balls there, so literally 25 overs, so that’s it,” said Tendulkar.

Tendulkar compared his proposal to day-night ODI cricket. He said in a cooler climate, players don’t sweat much and it could become a headache for teams when the ball gets old.

“So here in Test cricket, if you are not going to allow saliva, and sometimes you won’t sweat as much depending on the climate where you are playing, it could be a lot like day-night one-dayers,” the maestro said.

“In ODI cricket, bowling when conditions are dry in the day-night match and bowling second when there is lot of dew on the ground, so on paper the conditions and rules are exactly the same, but on field conditions are totally different, it’s chalk and cheese,” he said.

Apart from saliva ban, the ICC also approved COVID-19 substitutions and an additional DRS review while scrapping the neutral umpires rule in the wake of pandemic.
