Why Saqlain Mushtaq Believes Babar Azam Has an Edge Over Virat Kohli

Saqlain Mushtaq Believes Babar Azam Has an Edge Over Virat Kohli

Former Pakistan off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq believes white-ball skipper Babar Azam has an edge over India captain Virat Kohli due to having a calm demeanour.

Mushtaq was quick to add, however, that it would be unfair to compare the two due to Kohli’s longevity.

“Both are great players, with a great technique, and are mentally very strong. They have the hunger and passion to score lots of runs,” Mushtaq told Cricket Pakistan.

“Kohli is more aggressive while Babar is humble. Babar’s calmness gives him an edge over Virat Kohli if we look at what sports science teaches us.

“But comparing Babar with Kohli is unfair because the latter has been performing for a very long time, all over the world.”

The view is a starkly different one from that of former Pakistan opener Aamir Sohail, who believed that Kohli’s aggression is something Babar must look to incorporate.

“They both have quite similar attitude, have the will to perform, thought Virat Kohli looks to be quite aggressive on the field but Babar Azam looks to be calm and collected on the field,” Sohail had said in a Youtube video on his official channel.

“Maybe, Kohli is showing from outside that he is aggressive, but he is calm from inside, just to pose a fear in the bowler’s mind.

“I feel Babar needs to bring his expressions on the field as well. He troubles bowlers with his batting, but if he brings attitude on the field, it will certainly help him in a longer run.”

Babar Azam or Virat Kohli : Ramiz Raja

While speaking about best batsman in cricket, India’s Virat Kohli and Australia’s Steve Smith comes in mind. But cricket fans never forget the most under rated batsman from Pakistan. Former Pakistani cricketer Ramiz Raja verdicts the ability of Babar Azam to over come Virat Kohli.

The player from Pakistan always have his name in competition with India’s run machine. The 25 year old Babar Azam is currently one of the top batting talents to have emerged from Pakistan and he has drawn comparisons with Kohli and Smith. He has scored 6680 across formats since making an international debut in 2015.

The sudden demise of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput on Sunday broke the hearts of an entire nation. He will always be remembered for bringing former India skipper MS Dhoni’s story to life in the 2016 biopic movie based on him.

During an interaction with Arun Pandey – the producer of the film revealed some of Sushant’s memories.

Pandey recalled the first time Dhoni saw Sushant play the helicopter shot – which is a signature shot of MSD – he was in awe of him and had predicted that the actor could play Ranji trophy.

“I still remember that child-like smile on Sushant’s face when Mahi, after watching a training clip of the actor playing the helicopter shot on his phone, said in jest: ‘Arre tu to bilkul photocopy kar diya, Ranji Trophy khel jaoge tum,’” Pandey said as reported by Indian Express.

Pandey also revealed that the actor had long interactive sessions with Dhoni to prepare for the biopic. He also shared an interesting anecdote featiring Dhoni and Sushant.

“He would have long sessions with Dhoni too. Again, the questions kept on coming. If he wasn’t satisfied with any answer or if Dhoni was evasive, he would slightly twist the same question and try his luck again. Once I remember, Dhoni rolled his eyes and said: ‘Arre bhai, kitne questions poochta hai tu!’ I remember Sushant’s reply. He said, ‘Bhaisaab, everybody is going to search you in me, I will have to do everything the same way as you do’,” Pandey added.

“2007, 50-over World Cup has to be the lowest point of my career” : Harbhajan Singh

Reflecting on former India head coach Greg Chappell’s stint, offspinner Harbhajan Singh has claimed that his policies divided the team and played a disruptive role. Time and again, several India cricketers have criticised the time period when Chappell was in charge of the national team.

Chappell’s term coincided with India’s shocking exit from the first round of the 2007 ODI World Cup in the Caribbean where they suffered defeats at the hands of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and a consolatory win coming against Bermuda.

“A lot had happened before that. When Greg Chappell came as the coach of our side, he disrupted the entire team, no one knows what was his motive when he came to coach us, no one knows how to disrupt a solid team better than him, he used to do whatever he wanted. The press wrote what he wanted, people did what he wanted,” Harbhajan Singh said on Aakash Chopra’s YouTube channel Aakash Vani.

“2007 50-over World Cup has to be the lowest point of my career, I thought we are going through such a difficult time and I also thought that maybe it is not right time to play for India, wrong people were at the helm of Indian cricket. Who is Greg Chappell and what is he trying to do. Greg Chappell had a divide and rule policy, he used to do such things,” the 39-year-old added.

Harbhajan has played 103 Tests, 236 ODIs and 28 T20Is so far taking a combined 711 wickets in them.

He called the 2007 World Cup as the lowest point of his career as the team fared poorly despite boasting of world class cricketers.

“When I look back at the team that travelled to the West Indies in 2007, it was such a great team. We were just not able to perform as no one was in the right frame of mind, no one trusted each other. When the team is not happy then the results do not go your way,” he said.

He continued, “That is what happened. Despite having such a strong team, we were out in the first round. We lost to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, they were not that big teams, it was not like we lost to Australia or South Africa. Sri Lanka played final that year, but I would still think we were a team at par with them. That was the lowest point of my career.”

“We had a solid team for the 2007 50-over World Cup, we were just not able to perform as no one was in the right frame of mind, no one trusted each other, when the team is not happy then the results do not go your way. We lost to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, they were not that big teams, it was not like we lost to Australia or South Africa. We were a very strong team,” Turbanator went on to add.

“Perspiration will be the equal of saliva. I don’t see the difference, to be honest,” : Greg Chappell

Greg Chappell view on Saliva ban
Greg Chappell view on Saliva ban

Former Australia international Greg Chappell reckons that the whole debate around banning saliva is unnecessary as sweat will be enough to maintain the shine on the ball.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) last week banned the application of saliva on the ball as part of its several interim measures in the wake of coronavirus pandemic. The issue has already been creating flutters when the idea was first floated with fears that the game will get even more tilted towards the batsman.

    However, Chappell differs

“If they’re (bowlers) wiping perspiration from their forehead, there’s sunscreen there. If they’re using saliva, they’ve probably been chewing something, so what’s in that?” Chappell was quoted as saying by Sydney Morning Herald.

The former Australia captain said he cannot understand what the difference the ban will make. “I don’t know if it’s that big a deal. Perspiration will be the equal of saliva. I don’t see the difference, to be honest,” he said.

In fact, he reckons that using sweat will be enough and bowlers will be able to preserve the ball.

“Bowlers are inventive enough. If they can get perspiration on the ball, they’ll get shine, they’ll be able to preserve the ball unless it’s a real hard, abrasive wicket,” he said. “You’ve only got to keep enough shine on the ball, and perspiration will do that. I think it’s a bloody storm in a teacup myself.”

As far as Australia bowlers are concerned, Chappell said none of them are big swingers of the ball so there won’t be much difference. “None of them are big swingers of the ball (Mitchell) Starc might get some reverse swing by and large it’s the pace and bounce, I don’t think we’ll notice a huge difference, to be honest,” he said.

Ganguly recalls 2011 world cup winning

For legendary India captain Sourav Ganguly, the biggest day in Indian cricket history was when they lifted the ICC Cricket World Cup trophy at the Wankhede Stadium under MS Dhoni in 2011.

Ganguly was just a step away in leading India to world cup glory in 2003 but his team was outshined by an all-conquering Australia in the final. Following that, they exited the 2007 ODI world cup in the group stage itself before Dhoni ended their wait.

“For me, the biggest day was when India won the World Cup in 2011,” Ganguly said during an an online video lecture for Unacademy on Saturday. “The great MS Dhoni that shot, that six off the last ball will remain in Indian cricket history forever and what a moment it was.”

Ganguly was on commentary duties for the 2011 World Cup and he recalled coming down to watch the Indian team taking a lap following their victory. “I remember I was at the Wankhede Stadium that night and I came down from the commentary box to watch Dhoni and the team go around the ground. In 2003 the team which I was the captain lost the final to Australia so I was so happy to see Dhoni have the opportunity to win that trophy,” he said.

Ganguly said his lasting legacy was leaving behind a squad of seven-eight players who were part of the world cup winning campaign in 2011.

“That team had seven or eight players who started their careers under me. The likes of (Virender) Sehwag, Dhoni himself, Yuvraj (Singh), Zaheer (Khan), Harbhajan Singh, Ashish Nehra. So I think that’s a legacy which I was extremely happy to leave behind as a captain. And that was my biggest legacy that I left a side which had the ability of winning at home and away from home,” he said.

Thanking Pakistan for offering to help India during the global crisis, Gambhir said first all the cross border terrorism needs to be eradicated.

“I have to worry about the people in my country. Pakistan has offered to help India but they need to provide help in their own country first. They have offered to help and I am thankful for that but first they need to eradicate the cross-border terrorism,” he added.

“(Gautam Gambhir) and his attitude problem. He, who has no personality. He, who is barely a character in the great scheme of cricket. He has no great records, just a lot of attitude. He behaves like he’s a cross between Don Bradman and James Bond,” Afridi penned down in his autobiography.

Shoaib Akhtar has heaped praise on Sourav Ganguly, saying the former Indian batsman was very brave and was the only opener who could face the ‘Rawalpindi Express’ with the new ball.

Sourav Ganguly was the bravest batsman

“People used to say that he was scared to face fast bowling, he was afraid to face me. I think all of that was rubbish. Sourav Ganguly was the bravest batsman I ever bowled to, the only opener who could face me with the new ball,” said Akhtar in an interview on the Helo app.

Akhtar further said that despite having limited strokes whenever the ball was aimed at his body, the left-handed batsman never backed away.

“He knew, he didn’t have the shots, I also targeted him by bowling at his chest but he never backed away, and still scored runs. That is what I call bravery.” The former Pakistan speedster also labeled Ganguly as the best Indian captain he had played against.

“If I talk about India, then it will be Sourav Ganguly. India hasn’t produced a better captain than him. Dhoni is very good, he’s a superb captain but when you talk about team building, then Ganguly did a great job,” said Akhtar.

Ganguly counted as one of India’s most successful captains, played 113 Tests and 311 ODIs in which he scored 7,212 and 11,363 runs, respectively.

Rohit Sharma caught up with Jasprit Bumrah on Instagram live where the India pacer revealed that he takes inspiration from Swedish football star Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Bumrah said he loves the way Ibrahimovic rose from the ashes to become one of the best in the business.

    Bumrah’s Inspiration :

“I love Ibra. I can relate to his story that people did not take him seriously and then he became a star. I can relate as I think people took me lightly initially and then I proved them wrong, I am still trying,” Bumrah told Rohit on Wednesday.

With an abnormal, unorthodox action and natural pace, which he generates with a short run-up, Bumrah has left cricket pundits and fans all over the world baffled.

Bumrah’s action, which was frowned upon in his initial days, is so unique that fans have been trying to copy it ever since he made his international debut.

Mumbai Indians teammates Rohit and Bumrah also spoke about Lasith Malinga.

“The communication was difficult initially. He taught me the mindset when he gets hit, he smiles. I used to get annoyed at the beginning but he explained there is no point getting angry,” Bumrah said.

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit then said that he is really looking forward to IPL and is very excited because of the new players they had bought in the auction.

“We were excited with the team this time. Was very much looking forward to this year. We had a lethal new-ball bowling combination with you and Trent Boult. And we added Chris Lynn in our batting lineup.

“We have all our bases covered this year. But it’s ok we can’t control such things,” Rohit said.

Jadeja, much like other cricketers, has been active on social media during the ongoing forced break from the game due to the coronavirus pandemic.

On Wednesday, Jadeja posted a picture of him with Virat Kohli and tried to troll the India captain over their disagreement on a DRS call.

“Dekho bhai meine nai bola hai review lene ko@virat.kohli #DRS #skipper,” Jadeja had captioned his post.

In reply, Kohli came up with a cheeky reply and said that the all-rounder’s doubts pop-up after he goes for a DRS call.

“Tujhe toh hamesha out hi lagta hai. Review lene ke baad sab doubts aate hain tujhe,” Kohli left a comment with a laughing emoji.

However, it was Jadeja who took the cake with a cheeky reply of his own.

“Ab 15 seconds k baad bataunga,” Jadeja replied.

If a team wants to challenge the on-field decision, they get 15 seconds to make up their mind on whether they want to go for a DRS call or not.

India’s Oldest First-Class Cricketer Vasant Raiji Dies at 100

Vasant Raiji died at an age of 100

Vasant Raiji, who was India’s oldest first-class cricketer at 100, died here in the early hours of Saturday. Raiji was 100 years old and is survived by his wife and two daughters.

“He (Raiji) passed away at 2.20 am in his sleep at his residence in Walkeshwar in South Mumbai due to old-age,” his son-in-law Sudarshan Nanavati told PTI.

Raiji, a right-handed batsman, played nine first-class matches in the 1940s, scoring 277 runs with 68 being his highest score. He made his debut for a Cricket Club of India team that played Central Provinces and Berar in Nagpur in 1939.

His Mumbai debut happened in 1941 when the team played Western India under the leadership of Vijay Merchant. Raiji, also a cricket historian and chartered accountant, was 13 when India played its first Test match at the Bombay Gymkhana in South Mumbai.

Sachin Tendulkar and BCCI Mourns for the Loss of Legend :

Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar and former Australian skipper Steve Waugh had paid a courtesy visit to Raiji at his residence in January when he had turned 100. It has been learnt that the cremation will take place at the Chandanwadi crematorium in South Mumbai on Saturday afternoon.

Sachin Tendulkar tweet a post to express his condolences to his family. “I met Shri Vasant Raiji earlier this year to celebrate his 100th birthday. His warmth and passion for playing and watching Cricket was endearing. His passing away saddens my heart. My condolences to his family & friends”, Sachin’s tweet reads.

Board of Control for Cricket in their official twitter handle page made a tweet on this sad moment. The BCCI’s tweet reads “BCCI mourns the sad demise of Vasant Raiji. The former first-class cricketer and historian, who turned 100 this year in January, passed away in his sleep”.
