Chennai Super Kings Suspends Team Doctor Over Insensitive Online Post On India-China

    0

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Wednesday suspended its team doctor, Madhu Thottappillil, after he posted a tweet about recent India-China military stand-off ‘in bad taste’ Thottappillil had tweeted on Indian soldiers killed during the violent clashes with the Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh’s Galwan Valley. “Just curious if the Coffins will come back with a ‘PM CARES’ sticker on them?” he had reportedly tweeted.

After this irresponsible tweet CSK said the management was “not aware” of the tweet and has suspended Thottappillil. “The Chennai Super Kings Management was not aware of the personal tweet of Madhu Thottappillil. He has been suspended from his position as the Team Doctor. Chennai Super Kings regrets his tweet which was without the knowledge of the Management and in bad taste,” CSK tweeted.

    Dr. Madhu Thottappillil’s Apoligize

After this Tweet Dr. Madhu Thottappillil has made an apologize via twitter “On 16th June, I had put out a tweet, and after I realised that the words used by me was inappropriate and unintended. I deleted the same. But by then there were screen shots of my tweet being circulated and shared in social media. It was never my intention to belittle the great and herculean efforts taken by our Honb’le prime minister and the Govt in taking care of all the citizens obligations of this great nation and its Army or our brave Martyrs.

I have always respected the efforts of the govt in its valiant war on covid-19 pandemic armed forces and valour of the armed forces standing and fighting under adverse conditions. I regret the hurt and anguish I may have caused to many people who read my Tweet and wholeheartedly apologize for the same. I have tweeted inadvertently and mistakenly and it has nothing to do with my association with any individual or organisation.

I am aware of the care bestowed by the Honb’le prime minister taken for the martyred jawans who had laid their lives for the country , without whom we the citizens would not be having a secured life. I hope the whole issue is put to an end and the tweet be treated as an aberration on my part. I once again express my sincere apologies for the unintended and inadvertent remarks made in my earlier tweet. #jaihind Dr. Madhu Thottappillil” his twitter post reads.

Andrew Flintoff Recalls his 2004 Sledge against West Indies

Former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff has recalled his sledge to Windies pacer Tino Best in 2004, saying that was the best thing he ever did on the cricket field.

The official handle of England Cricket had shared a video from 2004, in which Flintoff can be seen prompting Best to hit a six on the bowling off Ashley Giles.

In the video, Flintoff can be heard saying, ‘Mind the Windows’. The all-rounder was standing at the first-slip position and was sledging Best to get under his skin.

Seeing the video, Flintoff tweeted: “Possibly the best thing I did on a cricket field, thanks for popping in Tino”.

In the match between England and West Indies in 2004, Best was trying to hit Giles for a maximum but he was unable to connect the ball properly. It was then, Flintoff said ‘Mind The Windows’ with a big smile on his face.

The move then riled up Best, and on the next ball, he decided to step out of the crease to hit a six, but he ended up missing the ball and was stumped.

After that Flintoff had a big grin on his face and he celebrated in style.

The commentator was Richie Benaud at that time, and he also took a jibe at Best, saying: “whether Giles outbowled Best or outtalked him, I do not know.”

West Indies Tour of England 2020

England have named 30 players in their “behind-closed-doors training group” who will live and train at the Ageas Bowl in the run-up to the first Test against West Indies, set to begin at the venue on 8 July.

The group will play a three-day practice match among themselves starting on 1 July, after which the squad for the first Test will be selected. National Selector Ed Smith was upbeat about the return of cricket.

CSA : AB de Villiers Set to Play in Innovative Three-Team Format Scheduled From June 27

Three-Team Format in Solidarity Cup organized CSA

Cricket is set to resume in South Africa on 27 June as the country’s board (CSA) announced the launch of an innovative competition titled ‘3TCricket’, where three teams will play in a single match at SuperSport Park in Centurion.

According to a Cricket South Africa statement, the three teams will compete for the inaugural Solidarity Cup. It will be the first live sporting event organized in the country since the coronavirus-forced lockdown in March.

As per the new format, 24 of South Africa’s top cricketers will feature in three teams playing two halves in one match.

The teams are the Eagles, to be captained by AB de Villiers, Kingfishers, to be led by Kagiso Rabada and the Kites, which will have Quinton de Kock as captain.

CSA Director of Cricket, Graeme Smith believes that this new format will bring back the excitement to the game.

“It’s been quite some time since the South African public and fans of cricket worldwide have been able to consume the game we all love. I know that the players are itching to get back into action as well, which is why we as CSA are so excited about the Solidarity Cup,” he said.

“It’s a thrilling new format and a match that is working towards a greater good. We are proud to partner with 3TeamCricket on this project,” said the former South Africa skipper.

The 3TeamCricket also aims to raise money for The Hardship Fund by using its platform of passionate cricket supporters.

The match will have 36 overs in two halves of 18 overs each. Each team will bat for one innings of 12 overs, split into two 6-over periods. Each 6-over period will be bowled by a different opponent.

The starting positions will be determined by a draw. The teams rotate from batting to bowling/dugout in the first half.

In the second half, the teams bat in order of highest score in the first half.

In case a team loses seven wickets, the last batsman can bat alone but he can score only an even number of runs.

The team with most runs bags the gold, while the next two sides win silver and bronze respectively.

Eagles skipper De Villiers believes that 3TCricket will be an incredible spectacle for the fans starved of action.

“It’s a great idea and credit must go to Cricket South Africa and Rain for working to develop this new and innovative style of cricket. There are very few team sports in the world where you get to play more than one opponent in a single fixture, this is going to be a game changer. We have some very talented cricketers involved who are really excited to return to play with a bang,” he said.

Kites captain, Quinton de Kock expressed his excitement at the prospect of beating two teams at once in the 3TCricket model.

“I’m really excited to be captaining the Kites, we have a great team and I think we can claim the gold. I’m even more excited about the new format, it’s going to be a lot of fun playing to beat KG and AB on the same day,” De Kock said.

The event will also witness the comeback of Proteas fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, the captain of Kingfishers.

He was sidelined from cricket since February due to a groin injury.

“It’s been a long wait to get back into action and I’m looking forward to playing again alongside some of the country’s biggest names. We have a good balance of talent and experience in our team and I’m confident that we can walk away with the inaugural Solidarity Cup,” he said.

    Squads:

Kingfishers: Kagiso Rabada (c), Faf du Plessis, Chris Morris, Tabraiz Shamsi, Reeza Hendricks, Janneman Malan, Heinrich Klaasen, Glenton Stuurman.

Kites: Quinton de Kock (c), David Miller, Temba Bavuma, Anrich Nortje, Dwayne Pretorius, Beuran Hendricks, JJ Smuts, Lutho Sipamla.

Eagles: AB de Villiers (c), Aiden Markram, Lungi Ngidi, Andile, Phehlukwayo, Rassie van der Dussen, Junior Dala, Kyle Verreynne, Sisanda Magala.

WATCH : Former South Africa Pacer Shaun Pollock Says India in a Really Strong Position Now with Regard to Fast Bowling Department

    Shaun Pollock

Former South Africa speedster Shaun Pollock on Sunday said India currently has depth in the pace-bowling department and gone are the days when the country would struggle to find a quality third or back-up seamer.

“Yeah, you guys (India) are really in a strong position now (with regard to fast bowling). The depth in bowling, the different variations, you have got some tall guys, shorter guys, quick, skillful, shaping the ball and you can decide in between them and you can have a real good balance,” Pollock said on Sony Ten Pit Stop show.

India currently possesses an array of fast bowlers led by spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, with the likes of Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar to back him up.

The country also has a good bench-strength with the likes of Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar and Navdeep Saini, among others.

The former South Africa captain recalled that there was a period when India did not have any third or replacement bowler to support lead pacers like Javagal Srinath and Venkatesh Prasad.

“If you decide to go with three or even four seamers, you now have got guys who can step in. In the years gone by, you might have had a Srinath or a Venkatesh Prasad, but then the replacement bowler…third bowler or backup bowler… was not of the same quality and that’s where I thought they were letting themselves down,” added Pollock, who has 421 Test wickets and 393 ODI scalps to his name.

The 46-year-old Pollock said in a recent chat, Bumrah had told him about competition among the Indian bowlers.

“We had a chat with Bumrah, the other day, and he was saying everyone is competing, ready to go, you really have to keep performing and if you don’t have a good few games, then someone can step in and take your place. So, that’s a good situation for India.”

England Announce 30-Man Training Squad Ahead of First West Indies Test

England have named 30 players in their “behind-closed-doors training group” who will live and train at the Ageas Bowl in the run-up to the first Test against West Indies, set to begin at the venue on 8 July.

The group will play a three-day practice match among themselves starting on 1 July, after which the squad for the first Test will be selected. National Selector Ed Smith was upbeat about the return of cricket.

“Everyone involved with England is delighted that cricket is returning soon, and that the players are reporting for group training in preparation for the Test series against the West Indies,” he said in a press statement.

Included in the squad are eight players who are uncapped at Test level: James Bracey, Lewis Gregory, Dan Lawrence, Saqib Mahmood, Jamie Overton, Matthew Parkinson, Ollie Robinson and Amar Virdi. Five of these players – Bracey, Lawrence, Overton, Robinson and Virdi – are yet to appear for England in any format.

England also confirmed the coaching personnel who will be assisting the squad, with the usual back-room team being supplemented by three county coaches. Lancashire’s Glen Chapple will be working with the bowlers, Gloucestershire’s Richard Dawson, who coached England Lions on their tour of Australia earlier in the year, will fill in as spin-bowling coach, and Kent’s Matthew Walker will assist batting coach Graham Thorpe.

Chris Silverwood will remain as head coach, helped also by former England wicket-keeper Chris Read as wicket-keeping consultant, and ECB National Lead Fielding coach Carl Hopkinson.

“As is the case in the current climate, things have progressed quickly, and we are very grateful to counties for allowing us to second their coaches to support our Test preparation,” said ECB Performance Director Mo Bobat. “The larger group of players will certainly keep them busy.”

Bobat added: “Both Glen [Chapple] and Richard [Dawson] were involved in winter Lions activity, so it’s nice for them and the players to build on effective coaching relationships and it’s also a real positive for our domestic game that we can expose a greater number of our coaches to international cricket.

Assistant Coach Paul Collingwood will not be with the group, but will instead be in charge of England’s ODI side later in the year when they hope to play host to Ireland for a three-match series – though the fixtures are still awaiting confirmation.

Squad: Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jofra Archer, Jonathan Bairstow, Dominic Bess, James Bracey, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Zak Crawley, Sam Curran, Joe Denly, Ben Foakes, Lewis Gregory, Keaton Jennings, Dan Lawrence, Jack Leach, Saqib Mahmood, Craig Overton, Jamie Overton, Matthew Parkinson, Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson, Joe Root, Dom Sibley, Ben Stokes, Olly Stone, Amar Virdi, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.

Young India batswoman Jemimah Rodrigues believes a full-fledged women’s Indian Premier League (IPL) can make a difference by unearthing talent such as Shafali Verma which would help the national team do well at the global level.

Countries such as Australia and England organised T20 tournaments for women to develop the game and the 19-year-old Rodrigues believes the same will happen in India if there’s a women’s IPL.

Jemimah Rodrigues Chat with ICC’s ‘100% Cricket’

“If you see the Big Bash and the Kia Super League have developed the game out there so much for Australia, England and now even New Zealand has started. That’s (IPL) definitely going to develop the game and it’s also going to get newer talent,” Rodrigues said on ICC’s ‘100% Cricket’.

She cited the example of the 16-year-old Shafali, who shone at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup with her explosive batting, as one of the finds of the IPL.

“We came to know about Shafali Verma through the IPL, she did so well in the IPL. We knew she could do well in the domestic circuit but after that playing against international players and being that fearless person we can get many more talents rising up playing such matches,” she said.

Rodrigues feels playing in the IPL will not only help develop the game in the country but also bolster the Indian team’s bench strength.

“Definitely it is going to develop the game so much and also give a lot of bench strength to India.”

Watch Jemimah Rodrigues on the importance of having Women’s IPL :

The BCCI has hosted women’s IPL exhibition matches in the last two years but has said a full-fledged tournament will take some time to take shape.

The Board had decided to organise a four-team women’s T20 challenge to run parallel to the men’s IPL playoffs with a total of seven matches to be played.

Acknowledging the BCCI’s efforts to expand the women’s IPL, Rodrigues said the tournament was a great learning experience for the Indian players who got the opportunity to rub shoulders with veterans of the game.

“Playing matches in front of a crowd its a different experience, that’s what’s going to help us play international cricket alongside the experience we are going to get sharing the dressing room with Sophie Devine, Meg Lanning, we ourselves will get to learn so much.

“It will be great to have a women’s IPL, the BCCI are on it, and hopefully soon we will be having a proper women’s IPL,” she added.

She also backed the idea of increasing the maximum number of overs for bowlers in a match.

“It makes a lot of difference you can go in with five bowlers in the side relying on that one of them will get an extra over. If anyone fails you can add up even to your batting order.

“I think it makes a lot of difference specially at crucial moments . When a bowler can win the match for you there is nothing like it. I believe bowlers win matches for us,” she added.

Ben Stokes' Leadership Style Similar to that of Virat Kohli, Says Joe Root

England Test captain Joe Root feels that Ben Stokes is more than well equipped to do the job of leading the side. Stokes, who is vice captain of the Test team, will be taking over the reins during their first Test against West Indies that starts on July 8 with Root sitting out due to the birth of his child.

Ben Stokes as Replacement for Joe Root :

Stokes had said earlier that he is “the Scottie Pippen to Joe’s Michael Jordan,” referring to the legendary Chicago Bulls duo that led the transformation of the team in the NBA during the 1990s.

Root said that Stokes is closer to Jordan than he is. “I think Ben would make a better Michael Jordan than me for a start,” he said on Sony Ten Pit Stop that was aired on the network’s Facebook page.

“He leads from the front, just like Michael Jordan did. He goes out there and performs, trains as hard as anybody. I think that is a great quality to have.”

Root compared Stokes’ style of leadership to that of Indian captain Virat Kohli.

“You see some of the great leaders, they do that. Virat (Kohli) being one, performs and expects everyone else to do the same thing.

“I imagine that is how Ben will go about his business. He is already a big leader in the team as the vice captain, there is a huge amount of respect for him. He has achieved so much in the game and in Test cricket and so he is more than well equipped to do the job.”

Joe Root Skips West Indies tour of England :

England Test captain Joe Root is in verge of missing West Indies tour next month to attend the birth of his second child.

England and Wales Cricket Board decides to resume International cricket from July. Where the England vs West Indies series 2020 has been scheduled to get underway from July 8 at Hampshire’s Ageas Bowl, subject to government’s approval. It will then shift Old Trafford in Manchester for the second and third Tests slated to start from July 16 and 24 July respectively.

“It’s evolving. “It’s being discussed with the medical team and we’re trying to stay up to date,” Root said. “At the minute, it’s still open for discussion. How that will finally look, I’m not exactly sure. It will have to come down to government advice, whatever that is. We’ll follow those protocols and do whatever is right.”

Stuart Binny broke legendary Anil Kumble's record

Stuart Binny’s brief stint in national colours resulted in a record-breaking performance that helped India register an unlikely win against Bangladesh on June 17, 2014.

Stuart Terence Roger Binny (born 3 June 1984) is an Indian international cricketer, who has played One Day Internationals, Twenty20 Internationals, and Tests. He played for the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League.

During their tour of Bangladesh in 2014, India had taken a 1-0 lead in their three-match ODI series against the hosts. The second match was interrupted by rain and eventually reduced to 41-overs-as-side contest.

India had rested MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli for the series.

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim won a good toss and expectedly opted to bowl first to exploit the moisture on the pitch and bowling-friendly conditions. Mashrafe Mortaza struck with the second delivery of the match, trapping Ajinkya Rahane lbw for a first-ball duck.

India then crumbled to Taskin Ahmed’s pace as their innings lasted 25.3  overs for a mere 105. Taskin finished with 5/28 from eight overs while Mortaza took 2/35.

Captain Suresh Raina was their top-scorer with 27 off 23.

Chasing 106 off 246 deliveries wasn’t going to be challenging even on swing-friendly conditions.

However, India pacers responded in kind with Mohit Sharma (4/22) knocking off Bangladesh openers in his first two overs.

Captain Mushfiqur and Mohammad Mithun began rebuilding.

The duo had added 31 runs for the third wicket and Bangladesh seemed to have settled in nicely.

Enter Binny with his military pace.

In the blink of an eye, he ran through the Bangladesh batting order taking six wickets in just 28 deliveries as Bangladesh were shot out for 58.

Binny (6/4) broke legendary Anil Kumble’s record (6/12) for the best bowling figures by an Indian in ODIs.

India took an unassailable 2-0 lead with their 47-run win.

Brief Scores: India 105 in 25.3 overs (Suresh Raina 27; Taskin Ahmed 5/28) beat Bangladesh 58 in 17.4 overs (Mohammad Mithun 26; Stuart Binny 6/12) by 47 runs

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Yuvraj Singh, Sunil Chhetri Pay Tribute to Indian Soldiers Killed in Galwan Valley Clash With China

    0

India’s leading sportspersons, including cricket captain Virat Kohli, former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh and football Sunil Chhetri, have paid tributes to the 20 Army personnel killed during a clash with Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh.

The clash at the Galwan valley was the biggest Indo-China military confrontation in over five decades and escalated the volatile border standoff in the region. As per the media reports, India lost 20 of its soldiers in Ladakh’s Galwan Valley region on Monday night. The Chinese side has also suffered heavy casualties of over 40 soldiers.

“Salute and deepest respect to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives to protect our country in the Galwan Valley. NO one is more selfless and brave than a soldier. Sincere condolences to the families. I hope they find peace through our prayers at this difficult time,” Kohli wrote on his twitter page.

Kohli’s white-ball deputy Rohit Sharma also mourned the death of the soldiers.

“Salute to our REAL HEROES who laid their lives protecting and honouring our border. May god give their families utmost strength,” Rohit tweeted.

Bhutia, who has also dabbled in politics, termed the attack a “planned one”. While the current India football team skipper Sunil Chhetri urged the top bosses to solve the issue over the table.

“China had asked all its citizens to leave India few weeks back. The killing of our soldiers in LAC was a I think a planned one.

“We completely condemn this cowardly act of China. Indian Govt should take strong necessary action and not bow down to Chinese aggression,” Bhutia wrote on the micro-blogging site.

Sachin Tendulkar Wasn’t Enjoying Cricket, Wanted to Give Up in 2007: Gary Kirsten

    0
Gary Kirsten states Sachin Tendulkar Wasn't Enjoying Cricket in 2007

Sachin Tendulkar wanted to give up cricket in 2007 when Gary Kirsten took over as India’s coach, the former South African opener has revealed.

Kirsten said Tendulkar wasn’t enjoying his cricket during that phase as he was batting out of position. Tendulkar was made to bat in the middle order in the lead up to and during the World Cup 2007, which India exited in the group stage. Greg Chappell, the then India coach, was criticised widely from all quarters including senior players.

Tendulkar went on to make a dramatic turnaround from there, scoring as many as 24 international centuries since the start of World Cup 2007 till the end of his career in 2013.

Speaking on Talk sports’ Following On podcast, Kirsten said, “If I think of Sachin Tendulkar at that time, where he was when I arrived in India… he wanted to give up the game. According to him, he was batting out of position, he wasn’t enjoying his cricket at all. Three years later, he scores 18 international hundreds in three years, goes back to batting where he wants to bat, and we win the World Cup.”

Tendulkar finished with 100 international centuries, scoring a whopping 34357 runs across formats. He also bowed out as a World Cup winner, playing a crucial role in India winning the tournament for the first time since 1983, in 2011.

Kirsten explained that the key to his success as a coach was to build an atmosphere where the players were comfortable.

“I ended up having a great coaching journey with him and that, for me, is where the essence of coaching is now, certainly modern coaching. You’re actually facilitating people’s ability to be the best version of themselves. All I did was facilitate an environment for him to thrive. I didn’t tell him (Sachin Tendulkar) anything. He knew the game, but what he did need was an environment – not only him, all of them – an environment set up where they could be the best version of themselves,” Kirsten said.

Former India wicketkeeper batsman Deep Dasgupta has revealed that batting legend Brian Lara enjoyed a conversation while at the crease and during India’s tour to the West Indies in 2002 their ploy was to bore the ace southpaw by not talking to him.

“One of the funniest things that ever happened was when we were playing against the West Indies in 2002. It was the first Test in Guayana and in the team meeting we were talking about how to handle Brian Lara. Some of the things that were said in that meeting were ”don”t talk to him”. I was like, what are you saying? They said ”he would get bored and get out,” recalled Dasgupta in a show called 22 Yarns hosted by Gaurav Kapoor.

Dasgupta, who played eight Test matches and five ODIs for India between 2001 and 2002, added that Lara would want to engage in a conversation with him and Rahul Dravid at first slip but they would stick to the plan and not give in.

In five Test matches, Lara managed only 202 runs at an average of 28.85.

“Whenever a spinner would bowl, I was behind the wicket and Rahul was there in the slips, Brian would play a ball, he would turn around wanting to talk to me or Rahul and we would turn our backs and look the other way. He would want to start a conversation and we would be like, no, nothing happening,” Dasgupta said laughing.

“He just wanted to chat, that’s the kind of batsman he was. He would love to talk about his batting, he would want to talk about everything,” he added.

The Windies won the five-Test series 2-1.

“He would get bored and get out. And that”s exactly what happened right through the series, Brian didn’t get a lot of runs there,” Dasgupta further said.

“We would talk to him every time we met him outside the field but whenever he came out to bat nobody would talk to him,” he added.
