Yuzvendra Chahal Reveals How MS Dhoni’s Tips Helped him Bamboozle Glenn Maxwell in 2017 India-Australia ODI Series

    0
Dhoni's advice Chahal to dismiss Maxwell in ODI series

India leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has emerged as one of the more reliable bowlers in limited-overs cricket. His captains usually deploy him whenever there is a need to break set partnership between batsmen.

Chahal recently took part in a conversation with his teammates Kuldeep Yadav and Mayank Agarwal in a show on BCCI.tv where he revealed how he and former India captain MS Dhoni set up Australian batsman Glenn Maxwell in the third ODI at Holkar Stadium in Indore in 2017.

Australia at that time was touring India for a five-match One-day International and three-match Twenty20 series.

The leg-spinner said that Maxwell was lacking patience in the series and had decided to go after him as soon as he came into the attack.

He said during the match he had a discussion with Dhoni on how to tackle the Australian player. According to Chahal, the former India captain asked him to mix up deliveries and not to show Maxwell any wide delivery so that when he bowled outside off stump, it would become a wicket-taking delivery.

Chahal added, “Me and Mahi bhai had planned to bowl him wide off stump. I thought he will come down the track and that is why I threw the ball much wider and got the wicket.”

The leg-spinner took Maxwell’s wicket thrice in the ODIs and once in T20 series. India got the better of Australia in the ODI series, winning it 4-1. However, the T20 series ended in a draw with both teams winning one game each.

Gautam Gambhir Calls Ravindra Jadeja ‘Best Fielder in World Cricket’, Says No One is Better Than Him in Throwing

Gautam Gambhir Calls Ravindra Jadeja as Best Fielder in World Cricket

Former India opener and now a successful politician Gautam Gambhir picked Ravindra Jadeja as the best fielder in world cricket at the moment and also explained why the Indian all-rounder is incomparable, at least when it comes to throwing or covering the field.

Jadeja has often earn praise and accolades from former cricketers, several experts and fans around the world for his catching brilliance on the field.

Speaking on Star Sports show – Cricket Connected, the 38-year-old Gambhir explained why Jadeja is the best fielder in world cricket. “I think, in world cricket, there is no better fielder than Jadeja, an overall fielder. Maybe he doesn’t field at slip and gully, but no one is better than him in throwing.”

“No one covers the outfield like him. Put him at point or cover, you can get him to field anywhere. No one has a safer pair of hands than him. Ravindra Jadeja, probably is the best fielder in world cricket,” he added.

The Indian team has over the years been known as a unit which has been brilliant with bat and ball, but lacked a bit when it comes to the fielding department. While things started changing under Sourav Ganguly when he had Mohammad Kaif and Yuvraj Singh manning the off-side.

Since then things have only improved further now and former opener Gambhir believes that Jadeja has taken it to another level.

South African fielding great Jonty Rhodes earlier rated Jadeja among the best fielders in the world, saying the Indian all-rounder has great commitment and anticipation skill. “Jaddu has taken some fantastic catches. The key is he is very committed. He is very good at anticipating the ball also,” Rhodes told veteran India batsman Suresh Raina during an Instagram Live chat.

Asked to name the best fielders in the world at the moment, the 50-year old, who changed the definition of fielding, said: “I love to watch AB (de Villiers) batting or fielding. (Martin) Guptill is there. Jaddu. Also Michael Bevan, he had excellent speed. Also Jaddu has great speed on the field.”

Rhodes had also lavished praise on 2011 ODI World Cup winner Raina, who himself is a brilliant fielder. “You remind me of me. I know how hard fields are in India and I have always have been a big fan (of you),” he said.

Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul, Smriti Mandhana Get NADA Notices, BCCI Cites “Password Glitch”

    0
Indian cricketers received notice from National Anti-Doping Agency

Five centrally contracted Indian cricketers including Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul have been issued notices by National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) for failing to disclose their whereabouts as the BCCI cited “password glitch” as the reason for delay.

The other players to have received the notice include women stars Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma, who are among the five cricketers in the 110 strong National Registered Testing Pool (NRTP).

Speaking to PTI, NADA DG Navin Agarwal confirmed that BCCI has sent an official explanation for their five NRTP players’ failure to submit whereabouts.

Players failed to Fill up the Whereabouts Form :

“There are two ways to fill up the whereabouts form in the ADAMS (Anti Doping Administration & Management Systems) software. Either athlete does it himself or association fills it up on his or her behalf,” Agarwal said.

“Now athletes in some discipline aren’t educated enough or do not have access to internet and find themselves unable to handle the whereabouts clause of the ADAMS or upload the filled up form.

“They use assistance of their concerned federations. So federations have accepted responsibility of uploading their whereabouts,” Agarwal said.

Check out What is ADAMS :

He said cricketers too at times find it tough to complete the process on their own.

“Similarly in cricket also, although these people are well qualified and they can do it, perhaps they don’t have the time for whatever reasons, so the federation concerned, the BCCI has taken upon itself the responsibility of uploading their whereabouts.”

So why didn’t BCCI upload the the three-month whereabouts this time?

“Well they have given an explanation which appears to be reasonable but a decision will be taken. They have said that there has been a glitch with regards to password in ADAMS. Now they have said that issue has been resolved,” Agarwal added.

NADA DG added that “BCCI’s explanation will be discussed as to whether it will be counted as one of three filing failures or not. It will be decided on the explanation given and how they (BCCI) proceed from here.”

While country has been under lockdown, the rule to submit three months of whereabouts is mandatory.

Three such failures to disclose leads to one Anti Doping Rule Violation (ADRV), which could lead up to two years of suspension upon hearing.

While BCCI has “officially gagged” its employees from talking to the media, it couldn’t be ascertained that why as normal a glitch as a password error took days to resolve.

A BCCI veteran, who has been privy to cricket operations, asked why the five cricketers were not told to upload the form themselves.

“This was lockdown period where they are not living out of suitcases. Some of the names have also engaged in multiple instagram chats and podcasts which their agents are managing,” he said.

“If cricket operations team were having a glitch in fixing password, well the five cricketers could have been asked to do so and they would have done it individually with some guidance.

“Probably NADA would be lenient this time but if it becomes an official warning, then who’s responsible,” he added.

Rohit Sharma Only Needs to See Out First Half Hour in Australia To Be Successful, Feels Nasser Hussain

    0
Nasser Hussain Praises Rohit Sharma ahead of India's tour of Australia

Former England captain Nasser Hussain has backed the supremely gifted Rohit Sharma to come good as a Test opener on India’s tour of Australia later this year, provided he sees out the first 30 minutes of the day.

Rohit, who had scored three hundreds including a double ton against South Africa at home in his debut series as Test opener last October, had missed on two games in New Zealand due to a calf injury.

The Australia tour will be his first big Test as an opener in the longest format.

“If Rohit Sharma is not a Test match opener, I’ve been watching a different game… If you go and ask fellow cricketers who your favourite players, a lot of them will say Rohit Sharma,” Hussain said in chat show on Sony Ten’s ‘Pit Stop’.

“Fellow cricketers watch Rohit Sharma and say this bloke seems to have so much time to bat.”

Rohit, who has become an ODI great, has only played 32 Tests. Hussain advised caution to Rohit at the start of the innings.

“Test match cricket at the top of the order is about having time, it’s about having a technique as well. You have to cover your off stump, like Virat (Kohli) did in England against (James) Anderson, the way he left him outside after all his problems of the previous tour, that is a Test match cricketer.

“And that’s the only thing Rohit has to do when he goes away from home and when is moving around. He has to just spend half an hour and say to the bowler you can have this half hour I’m going to leave you, I’m going to take the slip cordon out of play.”

India are scheduled to play four Tests in Australia.

The cricketer-turned-commentator remembered the 2018 Edgbaston Test where India had dropped their premier No 3 Pujara and went on to lose the match by 31 runs, saying Kohli and Co will need to be spot on, on team selection Down Under.

“I think India need to select well because they have so many great batsmen so it’s very easy that when Rohit doesn’t do anything for two games, Prithvi Shaw will get in, and when he doesn’t do well, someone else will get in…”

“Select, stick by them and give them a long run. They are very fine players and eventually, if you don’t get runs in Australia then you’ve got a problem because like I say it is a good place to bat you will find out who your Test match players in Australia.”

India will also play a day-night Test on the tour, at the Adelaide Oval from 11-15 December.

“Australia in general is a very good place to bat and the one game where it might do a little bit is the day-night Test. So if you get an opportunity of it moving around, you better make sure you use it.

“Probably since the Kolkata follow-on Test (at Eden Gardens in 2001) all these years ago, India-Australia has become an iconic series. Also because of IPL, and the sides knowing each other so well, and the clashes between them it’s become a real watchable series.

“Australia have gone on to No 1 in the Test rankings after the sandpaper gate scandal. I think it will be an incredibly watchable series.”

Hussain also spoke about the ban on use of saliva on ball in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.

“Cricketers would have trained their brain for like 20 years… It’s like getting in a car abroad and the indicators and steering wheel are on the wrong side. It’s just what you’ve trained the brain to do for a number of years, and it’s going to be difficult to retrain the brain.”

“I think it will affect the bowlers that maybe don’t rely on pace. The Duke ball in England anyway, I think does quite a bit. So I think a bit of sweat and will still see some movement in England,” he signed off.

Have Huge Respect for Sourav Ganguly, He Started Revolution in Indian Cricket: Nasser Hussain

    0
    Nasser Hussain praises Ganguly

Former England cricketer Nasser Hussain believes former India cricketer and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly led to a revolution in the Indian cricket. Sourav Ganguly is known as India’s most aggressive skipper.

During his captaincy days, Ganguly was known to stand by the players he truly believed in and leading the team ferociously. Sourav Ganguly, the current BCCI president, is also credited for regrouping the Indian team after the 2000 fixing scandal, which was touted as the lowest point of Indian cricket.

“Sourav made the Indian team a feisty side. He made the side tough, and when he was captaining the side you knew you were in a big battle with them. I have huge respect for him as a captain as he started the revolution of Indian cricket,” Hussain said on Sony Ten Pit Stop.

Nasser Hussain also praised the current India skipper Virat Kohli and termed him a valiant cricketer.

“Virat Kohli is a hugely combative cricketer. When he is out on the field, he wants to win and is desperate for victory,” he said.

Talking about England captain Eoin Morgan praised his attitude and also praised the team saying all players look to express themselves.

“He has done such a fine job leading the England white-ball side. The best aspect of the side is that they look to express themselves well.

“Another important aspect about this side is their selection. They have gone with players who are good white-ball cricketers such as Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy among others. More importantly, Eoin is known to be someone who is calm and cool as a captain,” said Nasser Hussain.

Shoaib Akhtar Praises Sourav Ganguly as the Bravest Batsman

Earlier Shoaib Akhtar has heaped praise on Sourav Ganguly, saying the former Indian batsman was very brave and was the only opener who could face the ‘Rawalpindi Express’ with the new ball.

“People used to say that he was scared to face fast bowling, he was afraid to face me. I think all of that was rubbish. Sourav Ganguly was the bravest batsman I ever bowled to, the only opener who could face me with the new ball,” said Akhtar in an interview on the Helo app.

    Waqar Younis praises Sachin Tendulkar

Former Pakistan captain and legendary fast bowler Waqar Younis heaped rich praise on Sachin Tendulkar, saying people of all ages like him for the way he handled his career.

Waqar Younis said Sachin Tendulkar is not just a great player but also a great human being while shedding light on what set him apart during his playing days.

    Waqar Younis Praises Sachin Tendulkar

“Sachin Tendulkar is not only a great player, but a great human being also. I mean, keeping aside his Test records and one-day records, as a human being and because of his qualities, people of all ages like him,” Waqar Younis during a chat show for Q20, GloFans.

“He is a very humble man and everyone has seen his achievements and has seen him performing on the field. Overall, full marks to him for the way he has handled his career,” he added.

Waqar Younis and Sachin Tendulkar have had some of the memorable duels in India-Pakistan clashes of the past.

Notably, both Waqar and Tendulkar made their international debut in 1989 in the Karachi Test and the Pakistan fast bowler went on to get the wicket of the then Indian teenager.

Sachin’s Performance in 2003 World Cup Against Pakistan

Recalling the 2003 World Cup knock from Sachin Tendulkar that helped India beat Pakistan in Centurion, Waqar Younis said it was one of the best innings he has ever seen.

“Sachin Tendulkar’s innings against Pakistan in 2003 is hard to be described in words because he played so well and especially because India was under pressure on that day and we were good at bowling,” Waqar said.

“Probably even if you would ask Sachin about this, he might also say the same thing, that it was probably one of his best innings. The way he faced Shoaib Akhtar, Wasim Akram and me under pressure and the way he attacked and got early runs, I think it was amazing innings, one of the best innings I’ve seen.”

“Virat Kohli is World’s Number 1 Batsman, Nobody Can Match Him” : Sarfaraz Ahmed

    0
Sarfaraz Ahmed claims Virat Kohli as World's Number 1 Batsman

Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has a clear pick when it comes to the world’s current best batsman – India captain Virat Kohli who has a 50-plus average across formats. While Sarfaraz is impressed with Rohit Sharma’s timing, Kohli is world number one batsman for him and he’s unreachable.

“In today’s time, there should be no doubt, it is Virat Kohli who’s the world’s number 1 batsman,” Sarfaraz told CricTracker. “But, as I have told you before that when I have been behind the wicket, I have felt that although Rohit Sharma does not have that many runs in Test matches, the timing that he has is great. But the number one player in the world is definitely Virat Kohli. Nobody can match him.”

Sarfaraz recently made his international return after being named in Pakistan’s 29-man squad for the England tour. He steadily lost favour with the national selectors following his slump in form and captaincy failures.

However, the initial period of his reign saw Pakistan becoming the world’s top-ranked T20I team as they won 11 T20I series in a row apart from beating arch-rivals India in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy final.

“In 2016, I became captain for the first time and I had a lot of young boys with me, I had only one senior player and in between (Mohammad) Hafeez bhai joined but unfortunately left soon. In my team, there were young boys and you know, you have played so many T20 matches, the same amount I have played too. In the last 10 to 12 years, you have made at least two teams with 27-28 players. T20 cricket happens in Dubai and how fast it goes I have seen and experienced it,” the 32-year-old said.

“In T20 cricket, the point is that you play and win with young players the important part was our fielding. We won many matches that we were about to lose because of our fielding. You can bat and bowl, but for me, as a captain, I feel the main factor behind our success was our fielding,” he added.

He also rued the absence of bilateral cricket tournaments between India and Pakistan recalling the time when the players of the two teams used to eat together.

“I have even seen scenes when I have also seen players from both countries sit together and eat. But now, unfortunately, it is a scenario where-in we are not able to play matches, but I hope the situation improves and India and Pakistan are able to play cricket the way they used to,” the wicketkeeper-batsman said.

“As far as role models are concerned, mine is Rohit Sharma,” Says Pakistan Cricketer Haider Ali

    0
    Haider Ali's role model

Pakistan youngster Haider Ali has picked Rohit Sharma as his role model, saying he’s inspired by the India vice-captain’s adaptability and clean hitting.

Haider is a highly rated batting talent to have emerged from Pakistan in recent times and was part of their U-19 team that lost to India in the junior world cup semi-final earlier this year. Such has been his rise that the 19-year-old has been included in Pakistan’s 29 member squad for the upcoming England tour.

    Haider Ali’s Role Model

“As far as role models are concerned, mine is Rohit Sharma,” Haider was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. “I really like him as a player, and want to give the side an aggressive start at the top, and hit the ball cleanly like him. He is a man for all three formats, and he can adapt his game to all three formats.

And the thing I like best is when he crosses 50, he moves on to a 100, and then he’s thinking of 150, and even 200. That’s what I want to do: to think about getting big scores, and when I get there, aim for even bigger ones. He finishes the game off for his side, and is a real match-winner.”

Haider’s performance at the U-19 World Cup led West Indies legend Ian Bishop comparing the youngster to Pakistan’s limited-overs captain Babar Azam.

    Haider Ali

Haider will have plenty of support and knowledge to gain from a star-studded Pakistan coaching staff headed by former captain Misba-ul-Haq with Younis Khan as batting coach and Waqar Younis as the bowling coach.

“I always wanted to play under the coaching of Younis Khan, and I’m glad I will get the opportunity this time,” Haider said. “I want to learn as much as possible from this tour and ask lots of questions of both Younis and Misbah. I want to learn how to play all three formats and what mindset to approach all three formats with. I’m very excited about how much I can grow over these next three months.”

    Haider’s Aim

Haider aims to represent Pakistan in all three formats. “My aim was to represent Pakistan. My aim is to play all three formats, and my preparation for all three formats is great. Recently in the domestic first-class competition, I did well, and before that there was the U-19 World Cup. I then played the PSL, so I’ve had practice in all three formats. As soon as I get the chance, I’ll give my best,” he said.

Ellyse Perry Grateful Australia’s Women’s Team Avoided Staff Cuts

    0
    Ellyse Perry
    Ellyse Perry

Ellyse Perry feels “very grateful” that the Australia Women’s team has avoided cuts to their backroom staff amid Cricket Australia’s redundancies while also stressing the importance of domestic competitions being retained in their current structures.

A announced 40 job losses earlier this week – of which men’s batting coach Graeme Hick was among them – but confirmed that the senior domestic tournaments across men’s and women’s cricket would not be cut back after previously being under threat when the financial impact of Covid-19 looked likely to be more severe, although the Under-15 and Under-17 set-ups have been suspended for the 2020-21 season.

However, while the women’s national team has not experienced any direct losses to their staffing Perry still expects the game to adapt to a new landscape with the expectation there will be a less centralised high performance set-up.

Perry Feels Lockdown as a Good Opportunity

“We’ve been incredibly fortunate to be able to maintain the structure and make-up of our staff within the Australian team albeit maybe with slightly varied roles and hours,” Perry said. “In terms of the resourcing we’ve been able to keep our group together which I know from a player and staff perspective we are very grateful for given everything that’s been going on.

“It actually presents a really good opportunity. We are really fortunate to be able to run with some great luxuries around resourcing and high performance, and those things are absolutely great, but I think sometimes paring it back and figuring out what you absolutely need is not a bad thing. I’m sure we’ll look at those different things and highlight what’s best to spend time and resources on and in many ways that could be a positive.”

In terms of the domestic competitions, Perry said it was vital that the current level was maintained in the women’s game. “It’s important not just from an Australian players’ perspective but even more so from a domestic players’ point of view. We don’t play a lot of cricket as is so to be able to maintain the number of games is crucial for cricket to keep developing and providing opportunities to everyone who will have a pretty long winter just training, so nice to have something to look forward to at the end of that.”

Ellyse Hopes the Women’s Game Would Continue

Perry was also confident that the women’s game would continue to thrive as sport emerges from Covid-19 and believes there could even be an upside with people desperate to be able to reconnect with the game.

“People really want it back on our screens and be able to go down to matches,” she said. “Women’s sport is increasingly playing such an important role in that, especially for families, you look at the demographic of our audience, especially at the ground, a lot of it is young families so I don’t see that changing – if anything as we go forward it could be enhanced.”

Australia are scheduled to return to action with a series against New Zealand starting late September. Perry remained hopeful that she would be available for those matches as she continues her recovery from hamstring surgery, following the injury she sustained in the T20 World Cup which forced her to miss the knockout stages, but also wants to ensure she is able to perform at her peak.

“It’s going pretty well. I caught up with the surgeon a couple of weeks ago and he was really happy with the progress,” she said. “It would be lovely to be fit for the New Zealand series, at this stage it’s tracking that way but there’s a little bit to go. Coming back from injury there’s a clear distinction in my mind between being fit to play and fit to perform. I don’t really mind if I don’t play in those games, it’s more about when I do play again I want to be a position to contribute and perform.”

The major event of the season is the 50-over World Cup in New Zealand next February and March although it remains to be confirmed if that will go ahead as scheduled either directly due to the impact of Covid-19 or the knock-on impact to the calendar.

“In some ways in the scheme of things a World Cup seems a bit irrelevant given everything else that has gone on, but at the same time everyone will prepare like it will happen,” Perry said. “It’s nice to know that more than likely we’ll be playing this series in September against New Zealand so that’s an immediate focus. Obviously depending on what depends on what happens on the men’s T20 World Cup that could have an impact on the Women’s World Cup.”

Chinese Sponsorship In IPL Helping Indian Economy, Says BCCI Treasurer Arun Dhumal

    0

The BCCI is open to reviewing its sponsorship policy for the next cycle but has no plans to end its association with current IPL title sponsor Vivo as the money coming in from the Chinese company is helping India’s cause and not the other way round, board treasurer Arun Dhumal said on Friday.

But Dhumal said Chinese companies sponsoring an Indian event like the IPL only serve his country’s interests.

The BCCI gets Rs 440 crore annually from Vivo and the five-year deal ends in 2022.

“When you talk emotionally, you tend to leave the rationale behind. We have to understand the difference between supporting a Chinese company for a Chinese cause or taking help from Chinese company to support India’s cause,” Dhumal told PTI.

“When we are allowing Chinese companies to sell their products in India, whatever money they are taking from Indian consumer, they are paying part of it to the BCCI (as brand promotion) and the board is paying 42 per cent tax on that money to the Indian government. So, that is supporting India’s cause and not China’s,” he argued.

Oppo, a mobile phone brand like Vivo, was sponsoring the Indian cricket team until September last year when Bengaluru-based educational technology Byju’s start-up replaced the Chinese company.

Dhumal said he is all for reducing dependence on Chinese products but as long as its companies are allowed to do business in India, there is no harm in them sponsoring an Indian brand like the IPL.

    IPL title sponsorships
    IPL title sponsorships

“If they are not supporting the IPL, they are likely to take that money back to China. If that money is retained here, we should be happy about it. We are supporting our government with that money (by paying taxes on it).”

“If I am giving a contract to a Chinese company to build a cricket stadium, then I am helping the Chinese economy. GCA built the world’s largest cricket stadium at Motera and that contract was given to an Indian company (L&T),” he said.

“Cricketing infrastructure worth thousands of crores was created across country and none of the contract was awarded to a Chinese company.”

Dhumal went on to say the BCCI is spoilt for choice when it comes to attracting sponsors, whether Indian or Chinese or from any other nation.

“If that Chinese money is coming to support Indian cricket, we should be okay with it. I am all for banning Chinese products as an individual, we are there to support our government but by getting sponsorship from Chinese company, we are helping India’s cause.”

“2011 final was fixed. I state it with responsibility and I can come forward for a debate… I would not involve the cricketers in this. However, certain groups were definitely involved in fixing the game,” he told News 1st on Thursday.

“I stand by what I say. It took place when I was the Minister of Sports…I do not wish to expose details for the sake of the country. The game against India in 2011, a game we could have won, was fixed,” he said.

Reacting to the claim, Mahela Jayawardene, who had scored an unbeaten 103 for Sri Lanka in the final, said that ‘elections must be around the corner’.

He asked for evidence to back up the ex-ministers allegation.

Later in the day, Kumar Sangakkara, who had been the Sri Lanka captain in the World Cup, but resigned soon after, said the politician must provide evidence to the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit because he has made very serious allegations.

“Then no one needs to speculate and can get to the bottom of this. That should be the most prudent course of action,” Sangakkara told News 1st.

In 2017, former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga, who had been at the Wankhede as a commentator during 2011 final, had also said that he had ‘doubts’ over the final and that he wanted an investigation into the result.

India players Gautam Gambhir and Ashish Nehra had rubbished Ranatunga’s claims then.
