SriKKanth praises Rohit Sharma as greatest ODI opener

Former India Skipper and executive of BCCI selection committee Kris Srikkanth have stacked acclaims on Rohit Sharma, rating him as one of the untouched most prominent openers to have played one-day cricket.

Srikkanth, himself an opening batsman, was known for his forceful strokeplay.

Rohit, India’s restricted overs Vice-captain, is known for his capacity to play enormous innings which have seen him strip off three double hundreds of years in ODIs – the most by any ever.

“I think I would rate him as one of the greatest all-time one-day openers in world cricket,” Srikkanth said on Star Sports’ Cricket Connected. “What’s the greatest quality in Rohit Sharma is that he goes for these big hundreds and double hundreds, that is something amazing.”

Rohit has played 224 ODIs so far and scored 9115 runs at 49.27 including 29 centuries and 43 half-centuries. He holds the record for the highest ever individual score in ODIs – 264 against Sri Lanka.

“In a one-day cricket match, you will go 150, 180, 200, just imagine where you are going to take the team to, that’s the greatness about Rohit Sharma. He is definitely, probably is in the top 3 or 5 all-time greatest openers as far as one-day cricket is concerned,” Srikkanth said.

Rohit, who had seen blended accomplishment in Test cricket before 2019, appears to have reversed the situation around since being elevated to open the innings in red-ball cricket too.

In his first innings as Test opener, Rohit hit hundreds of years in both the innings against South Africa a year ago before hitting a lady twofold century in a similar arrangement.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has reported the beginning of the postponed domestic season from August 1 when County Championship will get in progress. Country cricket was initially planned to begin in April yet was deferred due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The format to be played during the deferred men’s district season will be chosen by the 18 region groups toward the beginning of July and another installation to be distributed accordingly.

“A commitment to play women’s domestic cricket in 2020 has also been made, but may differ from the planned rollout of the new women’s elite domestic structure,” ECB said in a statement on Monday.

The preparation and planning for the season across the men’s and women’s domestic game remain subject to ongoing advice from Government and medical professionals with the safety of players, staff and officials the priority,” it added.

Considering it a ‘noteworthy advance’, ECB CEO Tom Harrison said the arrangement and arranging will be dependent upon the rules from government and clinical experts.

“It is a significant step for our game that we can approve the start of the men’s domestic season for 1 August and one which will be welcomed by everyone connected with County Cricket,” he said.

”It follows extensive consultation between the 18 First-Class Counties, the Professionals Cricketers’ Association and ECB and has only been achievable thanks to the significant hard work that continues to occur as we prepare for a domestic season unlike any the game has faced before.

“It must be stressed that the safety of our players, staff and officials has been the priority through all discussions and Government guidance will continue to shape our planning and preparation.

“Planning for the return of the women’s domestic game remains ongoing, but our commitment to women’s domestic cricket is unwavering and we look forward to sharing further news shortly.”

International cricket is set to return next month with England hosting West Indies for a three-match Test series.

India Bowling Coach Explains Why he Didn’t Change Jasprit Bumrah’s Unconventional Bowling Action

    Jasprit Bumrah

One of the noteworthy highlights that one notification while viewing Jasprit Bumrah bowl is his strange activity. There has been sufficient investigation and forecast over how his style causes him to create the pace and precision or how it could be inconvenient over the long haul.

Be that as it may, the truth of the matter is Bumrah has been one of the best quick bowlers India has created as of late and a few legends of the game have named him as ‘world-class’. He has a five-wicket pull in South Africa, England, West Indies and Australia inside two years of his Test presentation and structures an essential piece of Indian pace assault.

One of those credited for Indian quick bowlers exhibitions has been their bowling trainer Bharat Arun who has clarified how he never attempted to fiddle with Bumrah’s eccentric activity.

“If bowlers having unconventional action are being effective, then I wouldn’t recommend changing their action,” Arun said on Inside Out, a show hosted by India women team coach WV Raman.

However, he does admit that the 26-year-old’s action will put strain and effort on his body and that requires a different approach as far as his workload management and training goes.

“We knew that Bumrah has an unconventional action,” he said. “So there will be a lot of strain and effort which he would be putting on his body. So, we have been preparing in such a way so that his body can take the rigours of an unconventional action.”

Arun says that there was no guarantee that Bumrah would be able to perform at the level he has been should his action be changed. “Changing his bowling style might not have guaranteed the bowler’s performance at his optimum level. So rather than trying to change him, we might as well make him stronger physically in all the different parameters of fitness so that he can take the rigours of conventional action,” he said.

England vs India 2019 World Cup

On this day a year ago (June 30, 2019), has England crushed India at Edgbaston in Birmingham by 31 runs in their World Cup experience.

Batting first, England had posted 337 for 7 riding on Jonny Bairstow’s 111 off 109, Jason Roy’s 66 off 57 and Ben Stokes’ 79 off 54. India’s bowlers to a great extent attempted to change underground measurements, with one limit being incredibly short as the match was played on one of the keep going pitches on the square.

Mohammed Shami, be that as it may, got 5 for 69 in the game to guarantee England didn’t flee with the game with the bat.

In answer, India lost KL Rahul for 0 yet Rohit Sharma (102) and Virat Kohli (66) included 138 for the subsequent wicket. When they fell, India’s pursuit self-destructed, with many censuring their methodology especially towards the end.

In the last 5.1 overs, India required 71 runs yet MS Dhoni (42 off 31) and Kedar Jadhav (12 off 13) included just 39 runs with 20 of those in singles. Dhoni was hammered for not going for the success, with some, in any event, blaming India for purposely losing to guarantee Pakistan were taken out.

“There is no doubt about this – we said this before and all cricketers are saying that – as I said, you can see this clearly; For a person like Dhoni who can hit a six or a four at will, he is blocking the ball then that is easy to see,” Razzaq was quoted by PakPassion when asked if India lost to England on purpose.PakPassion.

    Virat Kohli

“I was working with the West Indies squad at last year’s World Cup. After India’s loss to England, Jason Holder, Chris Gayle and Andre Russell said to me, Mushy, India didn’t want to see Pakistan qualify for the semi-final,” Mushtaq Ahmed had said.

Meanwhile, Stokes wrote in his book that he felt Dhoni’s approach was strange.

“Arguably, the way MS Dhoni played when he came in with 112 runs needed from 11 overs was even stranger. He appeared more intent on singles than sixes. Even with a dozen balls remaining, India could still have won.

“…there was little or no intent from him (Dhoni) or his partner Kedar Jadhav. To me, while victory is still possible you always go for broke.”

However, former West Indies pacer Michael holding said Dhoni desperately wanted to win.

“It was not the game that India had to win, but I don’t think anyone can say that was a team tactic to lose the game. I watched that game and it appeared to me as if India weren’t putting up their 100 per cent, but I realised it was not the case when the expression on MS Dhoni’s face told me that he desperately wanted to win, so I do not think it was a team decision to not try to win,”

India were taken out by New Zealand in the elimination round while England beat New Zealand by a better limit include after a Super Over in the last than win the competition.

Previous India all-rounder Irfan Pathan trusts Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan share an extraordinary brotherhood and think about one another’s qualities and shortcomings and that is the reason they have been so fruitful for the Men dressed in Blue in constrained overs cricket.

Since getting the attention as an initial pair during India’s triumphant 2013 ICC Champions Trophy battle, Dhawan and Rohit have broken numerous records together and have been one of India’s best opening blends in white-ball cricket after the incredible pair of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly.

“We know Shikhar plays very freely. He gives time to Rohit. We all know how Rohit can change gears very quickly, but he takes time early on,” Pathan said while speaking on Star Sports’ show Cricket Connected.

“In cricket, you need someone at the other end to understand your strengths and weakness. Shikhar understands when Rohit needs time, for at least the few overs to get himself going.

Irfan Pathan consider Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma as best Opening duo’s for India

“So, he used to take the charge and I think that is what makes him successful. And as soon as the spinners came and Rohit Sharma got settled, he took all the pressure away from Shikhar Dhawan, so that is why the whole camaraderie went on well for Team India for so many years,” he added.

Rohit has over and over uncovered that he shares an extraordinary off the field relationship with his Dhawan which eventually encourages them to perform better as a couple on the cricket field.

“More than anything on the field, we share a great relationship off the field. Knowing each other so well, understanding each other’s comforts and discomforts, that is very important,” Rohit had said while speaking with Mayank Agarwal and Dhawan on the series ‘Open Nets with Mayank’ hosted by bcci.tv.

“We shared rooms together when we went on India A tours. So we have got a lot of history together. As a person, we both know each other quite well and that helps a lot on the field.”

Sri Lanka Begin Criminal Investigation into World Cup 2011 Final Fixing Claims

    0

Sri Lanka has requested a criminal test into charges the 2011 cricket World Cup last was “sold” to India, authorities said Monday. “A criminal investigation has begun,” K.D.S. Ruwanchandra, the secretary to the sports ministry, told AFP.

“It is handled by the (police) independent Special Investigation Unit on sports-related offences.”

Former games serve Mahindananda Aluthgamage asserted recently that Sri Lanka offered the match to guarantee an Indian triumph. “I feel I can talk about it now. I am not connecting players, but some sections were involved,” Aluthgamage said.

The island country’s 1996 World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga has likewise provided a reason to feel ambiguous about the outcome and recently required an examination.

Neighbourhood media reports said previous captain and boss selector for the 2011 finals, Aravinda de Silva, had been called for a meeting with specialists on Tuesday.

After beginning unequivocally, Sri Lanka lost the last at Mumbai’s Wankhede arena by six wickets. Sri Lanka batted first and scored 274-6 off 50 overs. They showed up in a telling position when Indian hotshot Sachin Tendulkar was out for 18.

In any case, India turned the game significantly, thanks to some degree to helpless handling and bowling by Sri Lanka, who were driven by Kumar Sangakkara. Sangakkara had said Aluthgamage should impart his claims to the worldwide administering body the International Cricket Council.

India vs Sri Lanka Worls Cup 2011 Finals

Worldwide cricket in Sri Lanka has recently been connected to debasement charges, including cases of match-fixing in front of a 2018 Test against England.

Prior this month, the Sri Lankan cricket board said the ICC was examining three anonymous ex-players over debasement claims.

Match-fixing was made a criminal offence in November. Wrongdoers face fines of up to 100 million rupees ($555,000) and as long as 10 years’ prison.

2011 World cup was Fixed: Sri Lanka’s Ex-Sports Minister

“2011 final was fixed. I state it with responsibility and I can come forward for a debate… I would not involve the cricketers in this. However, certain groups were involved in fixing the game,” he told News 1st on Thursday.

“I stand by what I say. It took place when I was the Minister of Sports…I do not wish to expose details for the sake of the country. The game against India in 2011, a game we could have won, was fixed,” he said.

Reacting to the claim, Mahela Jayawardene, who had scored an unbeaten 103 for Sri Lanka in the final, said that ‘elections must be around the corner’. Mahela Jayawardene asked for evidence to back up the ex-ministers allegation.

Zimbabwe Tour of Australia in August Postponed Due to COVID-19

Zimbabwe Tour of Australia 2020 postponed

Zimbabwe’s voyage through Australia for three One-Day internationals in August has become the most recent sporting fixture to be delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The matches were to have been played on August 9, 12 and 15 but citing “concern for the health and safety of players, match officials, and volunteers”, Cricket Australia announced the series would not go ahead as planned earlier. However, the board said they would re-work the schedule.

“While we are disappointed to postpone the series, (Cricket Australia) and (Zimbabwe Cricket) agree that in the best interest of players, match officials, volunteers as well as our fans, that this is the most practical and sensible decision,” said Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley.

“We are committed to working with Zimbabwe Cricket on alternative dates to reschedule”, he added.

Zimbabwe Cricket, meanwhile, said there was no other option.

“We were excited about facing Australia but, given the circumstances, deferring the tour was the only possible option,” said Givemore Makoni, Zimbabwe Cricket’s acting managing director.

“We are, however, looking forward to the rescheduling of the series as soon as practically possible.”

Zimbabwe would have needed to experience a 14-day isolate when entering Australia, and conceivable further separation when traversing state limits inside Australia.

The last time Zimbabwe visited Australia return in 2003-04. The last time the two groups met in One-Day International cricket was in 2014 when Zimbabwe had vexed Australia, winning by three wickets. Australia had overseen just 209 for 9 batting first in that coordinate in Harare, with Zimbabwe pursuing it down with three wickets and two overs to spare.

“While it hasn’t been formally called off this year, or postponed, trying to get 16 countries into Australia in the current world, where most countries are still going through COVID spiking, I think it’s unrealistic, or it’s going to be very, very difficult.

“The ICC is having meetings as we speak, it’s a bit of a movable feast at the moment,” Eddings was quoted as saying by the reporters.

As Eddings mentioned, inviting players from 16 countries and hosting them in a bio-secure environment calls for daunting logistical challenges for Cricket Australia.

Australia Prime Minister Scott Morrison allowing up to 10,000 spectators in venues with a seating capacity of less than 40,000 had given hopes regarding the World Cup being played on its scheduled time. Having said that, the CA Chairman’s latest statement speaks of the otherwise.

ICC to Review World Test Championship Schedule After Gauging COVID-19 Impact

    0
    ICC World Test Championship
    ICC World Test Championship

While everyone is waiting with bated breath for the ICC to announce the fate of the T20 World Cup in October-November, the international body is not just worried about the showpiece event in Australia. Another concern for them is the fate of the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship which is now set to undergo a re-scheduling with the coronavirus pandemic forcing postponement and cancellation of Test series.

Speaking to IANS, an ICC official said the FTP (Future Tours Programme) will need to be worked on keeping in mind the current scenario which has made it almost impossible for countries to honour their bilateral commitments. But the same will be done only after understanding the overall impact the pandemic has on the FTP.

“At this stage, nothing has changed; whilst we understand how much cricket has been lost and when the T20 WC can be held. The disrupted FTP program would need to be collectively reviewed through to 2023 with a view to rescheduling as much of the cricket that has been postponed due to COVID-19 as possible.

“Discussions and decisions on the future of both the World Test Championship and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League will be held at a later date when there is a greater understanding of the impact of the cricket that has been lost on the competitions,” the official said.

An ICC board member confirmed that talks have been on regarding cancellation of Test matches due to the pandemic in the recent ICC meetings and the impact it will have ultimately on the Test championship. But it will not be easy to rework the calendar and will take time.

“Contrary to popular belief, discussions have also been had on other important things apart from the T20 World Cup. And as you are aware, the Test championship is something close to all members. The championship finally saw the light of day after being in the pipeline for quite a several years. So, it holds an important place in the priority list of everyone as it is the format which needs attention.

“Whether the ICC will finally rework the calendar to include the matches missed or there will be a change in the points system, these decisions will need to be made by around October because as things stand, you cannot have the original plan getting you the desired outcome. The coronavirus pandemic has hurt the game and you cannot blame anyone for this.

“Whatever the decision, it will have to be taken in unison by the board members. There is no two way about the fact that the maiden championship needs to be completed at the earliest. But what you must also consider is that reworking the schedule will need around 2-3 months because, at the end of the day, it is the Test matches played in a bilateral series which make up the WTC so member countries will have to prioritise which series they will play when,” the member explained.

India currently leads the WTC table with 360 points, followed by Australia (296) and England (146).

IPL Must Happen For Both Cricketing And Financial Reasons: Bhuvneshwar Kumar

    0
    Bhuvneshwar Kumar
    Bhuvneshwar Kumar

With no clarity of when cricket will resume in India due to the rising cases of coronavirus infections, cricketer Bhuvneshwar Kumar reckons that the suspended Indian Premier League (IPL) must happen at some stage this year for both financial and cricketing reasons.

BCCI is hoping that should the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup scheduled to be held in October-November this year be scrapped, that would give them a window to conduct IPL in some form.

The cancelling of the T20 league could result in a financial hit of around Rs 4,000 crore to the BCCI.

“The IPL must happen. The tournament is important for both cricketing and financial reasons,” Bhuvneshwar said during said at a webinar organised by GainAccess Sports & Entertainment and Sportz Power.

However, international cricket will mark its return after almost four months of hiatus when England host West Indies for a three-match Test series from next month.

ICC has issued several guidelines for professional matches to be played in a secure environment including the ban on applying saliva on a cricket ball. Bhuvneshwar says the authorities must come up with an alternative to shine the ball.

“I hope the ICC comes up with some artificial way by which we can shine the ball. You need to do it when you bowl in swinging conditions in (places like) England. Even the spinners need it,” the 30-year-old said.

Much has been said and written about India’s inability to win an ICC tournament for seven years now. Their last global title was the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy but Bhuvneshwar reckons too much is being read into it as India have made to the usually made the knockouts of such events and lost due to one or two unlucky turn of events.

“India lost 3-4 wickets in 15 minutes, that made the game (2019 world cup semifinal vs New Zealand) one-sided. That was an unfortunate event. And if you look at the Champions Trophy final against Pakistan, the match changed after the Jasprit Bumrah no-ball,” he said during ESPNCricinfo’s Cricketbaazi. “It’s not like we’ve had a one-sided loss or we went down without a fight. We’ve always lost due to an unfortunate event or incident.”

“The last we won was the Champions Trophy in 2013. And since then, there have been only 3-4 ICC tournaments and we have made it to the semis or the finals about 2-3 times. In 2015 World Cup we lost to Australia in the semi-final. And in the 2019 World Cup, it was bad luck. An early loss of three top-order batsmen cost us the game. It rarely happens that in a match after dismissing the opposition for, under 250, you are get bowled out,” he added.

Tendulkar: Viv Richard’s 45-Minute Call Helped Me Come Out of Retirement Thoughts in 2007

    Sachin Tendulkar Viv Richard
    Viv Richard Sachin Tendulkar

Cricket Legend Sachin Tendulkar once decides to quit cricket in 2007 but a 45 minutes call with West Indies Legend Viv Richard help him to change the decision. Tendulkar said the 2007 World Cup was possibly the worst phase of his career and the game which had shown him the best days of his life was showing him the worst days as well.

“I felt that was it. At that stage lot of things happening around Indian cricket were not at all healthy. We needed some changes and I felt if those changes did not happen then I was going to quit cricket. I was almost 90 per cent sure of quitting cricket. But my brother told me in 2011 there is a World Cup final in Mumbai, can you imagine holding that beautiful trophy in your hand?” Tendulkar said during an ‘India Today’ programme.

“After that, I went away to my farmhouse and that is when I got a call from Sir Viv, saying I know there is plenty of cricket left in you. We had a conversation for about 45 minutes and that was so heartwarming because when your batting hero calls you it means a lot. That was the moment things changed for me and from that moment onwards I also performed much better,” Tendulkar recalled.

Richards, who was also present in the programme, pointed to Tendulkar and said he had “always believed in this little guy“.

“I have had the opportunity to play against Sunny (Sunil) Gavaskar, who I have always felt would be the godfather of Indian batting. Then came Sachin, then you now have Virat (Kohli). But the fact which amazed me the most is how such a small guy is so powerful,” Richards said.

Tendulkar also said that losing the World Cup final at the hands of Australia in 2003 was one of the biggest disappointments of his life.

“Yes, there was regret… because we played so well in that tournament. Before that our batsmen were not in a good space because we played in New Zealand where they prepared lively pitches. When we went to South Africa we started gaining confidence with every match. The only team that we lost to in that entire tournament was Australia.

“I felt we were charged up in the final, maybe a bit too much. Sometimes when your aggression is not controlled, the result tends to go the other way then. If given a chance again we would approach that game differently,” said Tendulkar.

Akram said Pakistani players tried to sledge Tendulkar but realised later that he would not react
Akram said Pakistani players tried to sledge Tendulkar but realised later that he would not react

The former India ODI opener picked England, Australia and India as the favourites to reach the semifinals in the ongoing World Cup in the United Kingdom.

Talking about India-Pakistan match on June 16, Tendulkar said: “India is in a better space to win that game“.

Fast bowling legend Wasim Akram said Pakistani players tried to sledge Tendulkar but realised later that he would not react.

“(Shoaib) Akhtar tried, Waqar (Younis) tried. Some guys would get upset but Sachin would get more motivated. I remember when India was about to come to Pakistan, we heard about a young sensation coming from India. And we thought how could a 16-year-old boy playing Test cricket be so good.

“But he did not react to provocation from our pacers. Top batsmen do not react. I would get very annoyed when people smiled back. On that tour, Pakistan got to know who Sachin Tendulkar was. We realised this guy was something special,” said Akram.

Another Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar, Harbhajan Singh, R Ashwin, Shane Warne, Michael Clarke, Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq and Naseer Hussain were also present in the programme.

Rahul Dravid Asked Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly to Not Play 2007 World T20, Says Lalchand Rajput

Dravid Asked Sachin and Ganguly to Not Play in 2007 WT20

India’s 2007 ICC World T20 win will stay among the most noteworthy triumphs in the nation’s cricketing history. A youthful and rather unpracticed group drove by Mahendra Singh Dhoni who was captaining India just because won the trophy despite seemingly insurmountable opposition in Johannesburg.

The nonappearance of stalwarts like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid had implied nobody gave the Indian group an opportunity at the occasion in South Africa.

Be that as it may, it was the then ODI skipper Dravid who had persuaded Tendulkar and Ganguly to not play in the opposition and let adolescents have a go at it.

“Yes, it is true (Rahul Dravid asked Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly to not play the 2007 T20 World Cup),” Lalchand Rajput the team manager of the side for the 2007 World T20 told Sportskeeda in an interaction in their Facebook page.

    Watch the FB Live :

“Rahul Dravid was the captain in England and some players came directly from England to Johannesburg (for the T20 World Cup) so they said ‘let’s allow the youngsters’. But after winning the World Cup they must have repented it when we won the World Cup,” Rajput added.

“Because Sachin always kept on telling me that I am playing for so many years and I have still not won the World Cup. Ultimately, he won in 2011, but he was dying to win that World Cup and this team won on the first attempt,” he said.

Rajput recalled how the team thrived under the calm leadership of MS Dhoni as he managed to get the best out of the players.

“As a team, in a dressing room, the atmosphere should be very good. You should motivate players, and the players should not feel the pressure. Our theme during the World Cup was ‘tension lene ka nahi, dene ka (Don’t take tension, give tension)’. Dhoni believed in the motto that people will talk about things, but we need to focus on our strengths and don’t have to worry about what others are saying,” he said.

“Indian team never had much match practice of T20I World Cup. We had only played one T20I match, the other team had played more matches. We were not well prepared, but that hunger was there. Certain senior players were looking to make a comeback and cement their place in the team. It was a good mixture of senior and junior players,” he added.

The Zimbabwean group mentor felt Dhoni’s captaincy was a major factor in India’s triumph as he frequently figured out how to outsmart his contrary number.

“He always thought two steps ahead,” Rajput said of Dhoni.

“I felt as a captain he was a mixture Dravid and Ganguly. He used to give his players a lot of confidence just like how Ganguly did and he also put a lot of thought in the game that was similar to Dravid,” Rajput said.

Dhoni proceeded to get one of the best captains in Indian cricket history as he included the 2011 ICC World Cup and 2013 ICC Champions Trophy to his bureau. He additionally drove India to the No 1 situation in ICC rankings.

The success at the 2007 ICC World T20 ends up being an immense lift to Indian cricket that was reeling after the stun early exit in the 2007 ODI World Cup in West Indies.
