WATCH : Sourav Ganguly Reveals Why Sachin Tendulkar Never Took Strike on First Ball of Match

    0
reason for Sachin not to strikes the first ball of match

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has revealed how cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar used to always stay at the non-striker’s end when the first ball was bowled in a match.

Ganguly and Tendulkar formed one of the most potent opening combinations in the world and till date, they hold the record for the most number of runs scored at the top of the order. Between 1996 to 2007, the duo scored 6,609 runs in 136 innings, including 21-century stands and 23 fifty partnerships in the 50-over format of the game.

India’s current Test opener Mayank Agarwal recently asked Ganguly about the supposed myth that Tendulkar always forced the southpaw to take a strike on the first delivery and the current BCCI President revealed that it was indeed the case.

“Did Sachin paaji force you to take the strike when you opened the batting in ODIs?,” Agarwal asked Ganguly while speaking on the series ‘Open Nets with Mayank’ hosted by bcci.tv.

“Always, he did…he had an answer to that. I used to tell him ‘sometimes you should also face the first ball. I always face the first ball’. He had two answers for that,” Ganguly said.

“One, he believed if his form was good, he should continue and remain at the non-striker’s end. And when his form wasn’t good, he would say ‘I should remain at the non-striker’s end, as it takes the pressure off me’. He had an answer for both good form and bad form,” the former India captain said, leaving Agarwal in splits.

Ganguly then went on to reveal that he also came up with a trick to make Tendulkar face the first ball, which according to him, worked like a charm a few times.

“Until and unless some days you just walk past him and stand at the non-striker’s end and he was already on TV, and he would be forced to be at the striker’s end. That has happened once or twice, I went past him and stood at the non-striker’s end,” Ganguly said.

They will next move to Derbyshire’s The Incora County Ground on July 13 to begin their training for the Test series that includes two intra-squad warm-up matches.

MS Dhoni: What Has The Former India Skipper Been Doing Since Taking Sabbatical?

    0
    Dhoni during lockdown

Speculations were rife ahead of the 2019 Cricket World Cup that former India skipper MS Dhoni could hang his boots after the marquee tournament. There was also a hope that India – led by Virat Kohli – a well-balanced and potent unit will lift the trophy. There was also a feeling that Dhoni – who was 37 at that time – would look to sign off on a high, like, maybe Imran Khan.

Unfortunately, all those hopes of a fairytale send-off were put to rest after Kohli’s India succumbed to a heartbreaking loss at the hands of New Zealand in the semis.

While some criticised India’s most successful skipper ever – Dhoni – for his slow-paced batting, others reckoned it was time for him to call it a day, as a young and more aggressive Rishabh Pant, was in the waiting and was taking giant strides in international cricket.

Amid the talk of his retirement, India toured the West Indies for a short tour but Dhoni decided to go on a sabbatical which has continued to this day.

Here we take a look at what the talisman has been doing during the break.

    Meeting The Army-men in J&K

Dhoni went to Jammu and Kashmir – where he spent some time with Territorial Army unit of the Parachute Regiment with which he holds an honorary rank. From polishing the boots to singing songs for the soldiers, playing tennis-ball cricket and volleyball, Dhoni did all while performing the guard and patrolling duties. This was in mid-August with videos/pictures surfacing online, and as expected going viral in no time.

During this period, he also missed the home series against South Africa and Bangladesh and chief selector MSK Prasad made a statement where he said India is looking ahead, which clearly meant the side was looking at young Pant to take over. From Dhoni’s end, there was no clarity as he – in his own inimitable style – kept mum. The only statement that came from his end was that he wants to be left alone when asked by reporters at a promotional event.

    The Family Vacation

This was during the New Year when the Dhonis went on a vacation to Mussoorie. He was seen enjoying quiet time in the snow-clad mountains with daughter Ziva. The video, shot in the -3 degrees temperature, showed the veteran wicket-keeper enjoying the snowfall in the company of his family.

    Father-Daughter Goals

Dhoni is a doting father. Time and again videos emerge on the social sphere of him playing with his daughter Ziva. A video in which he can be seen teaching Ziva how to ride a bike was a massive hit among the fans.

In between, all of this, when the Indian team toured New Zealand, Dhoni had made time for another family outing to Kanha National Park, where he indulged in wildlife safaris with Sakshi, Ziva and friends. Dhoni also turned photographer and captured a tiger from his lens. Just after that, he went on a short holiday to the Maldives with former India cricketer Rudra Pratap Singh.

Figuring How to Get Sachin Tendulkar Out Was a Nightmare: Nasser Hussain

    0
Nasser Hussain states Sachin Tendulkar as his night mare

During his playing career, batting legend Sachin Tendulkar was a nightmare to the opposition captains and bowlers across the world including England’s Nasser Hussain who admits to have spent a lot of his time in team meetings to come up with ways to tackle the Indian.

Tendulkar is widely regarded as the greatest batsmen of the modern era, retiring as the most prolific run-scorer in the history of international cricket. During his career, he scored 34357 runs across formats including a world record 100 centuries.

“Overall when I talk about all-time batsmen, Sachin Tendulkar had a magnificent technique,” Hussain said on ICC podcast titled Cricket Inside Out. “The number of meetings, I had as an England captain trying to figure out how to get Sachin out was a nightmare.”

Ian Bishop too Feels the Same:

Former West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop considers Tendulkar to be one of the toughest he ever bowled to, having dismissed him thrice during their international meetings.

“Sachin Tendulkar was the most difficult batsmen to whom I have bowled against in my career. He always used to hit in the straight lines and for his ability to generate power and hit balls to the boundary,” Bishop said.

When asked which current batsman’s technique has impressed him the most, Hussain replied with the name of New Zealand’s Kane Williamson.

“Virat Kohli has great technique. For me, the technique is getting runs in all parts of the world, and I like someone who plays with soft hands and lets the ball come to him. But for me, Kane Williamson. He plays the ball late with soft hands.

He continued, “As a victim of T20 cricket and white-ball cricket, players in the modern gameplay with hard hands and nick the ball a lot. Williamson can play all three formats but can adapt his game to each.”

Nasser Hussain Verdicts the Reason Behind India’s Failure to Win ICC Trophies After 2013

    0
reason for India's failure in ICC major events

Former England skipper turned reporter Nasser Hussain points out the reason for India’s inability to win an ICC competition in past seven years. He states that India in wrong selection and absence of Plan B. Since winning the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013, India have entered the T20 World Cup last (2014), Champions Trophy last (2017) and made the knockouts of ODI World Cup and T20 World Cups different events.

“I would say the selection is where India has gone wrong over the ICC tournaments, adapting to conditions a little bit. So it’s not just about having one game plan,” Hussain told Star Sports’ Cricket Connected.

At the 2019 World Cup semi-final, India lost to New Zealand after top-order’s failure.

“Adapting to conditions, if it’s nibbling around (ball swinging) and if you are in a World Cup semi-final against New Zealand and it’s doing a little bit, where is your middle-order if you are 20 for 2 and Kohli and Sharma are out?” Hussain asked.

“It could almost be a fault of Indian cricket that they are too good at the top of the order. When it’s good and flat, okay Kohli hundred, Sharma hundred, hundreds at the top and lads in the middle order don’t get a hit,” he added.

India vs Sri Lanka 2014 T20 finals

He continued, “…..and suddenly you are 20 for 3 because you have come up against (Mitchell) Starc, (Josh) Hazlewood and suddenly all the guys haven’t had a hit and we are four down and how we are going to get out of it now. So it’s about having a Plan B that will get them across the line, not just having a Plan A.”

Selection, Hussain says, is one of India’s weakest points. “Selection – I know people say what’s that got to do with Kohli, but you got to have a selection plan. I think India did a lot of things well, I’m not sure selection is one of them,” he said.

However, Hussain still feels that despite the shortcomings, Virat Kohli’s record as a captain is right up there with the best. “Coming to a World Cup, not knowing who your No. 4 is when you got so many great batsmen in India, their selection issues that need to be sorted out, but the whole point of captaincy is to win games of cricket. And if you look at Kohli’s record as a captain, it is right up there with the best there’s ever been,” the 52-year-old said.

“The year started on a horrible note and there’s been no relief on any front. But as time goes by, we need to take things head-on and ensure that we remain prepared for any eventuality. A report in Times of India said the barricade is drawing a provisional window for the Indian Premier League 2020, independent of ICC’s choice on the T20 World Cup.

Treasurer Arun Dhumal affirmed that the opportunity has arrived for BCCI to begin anticipating the year ahead.

“The year started on a horrible note and there’s been no relief on any front. But as time goes by, we need to take things head-on and ensure that we remain prepared for any eventuality. Cricket is no different. It is time for the BCCI to start planning for the year ahead,” Dhumal told Times of India.

Giving instances of different games that are continuing bit by bit far and wide, Dhumal said BCCI is making arrangements for resumption from September.

“The NBA is beginning in the US in a protected zone. The English Premier League (EPL) is on and so are the FA Cup matches. Bundesliga was the first to show the way. Even Australias domestic rugby league is about to begin. This is what is happening right now. What BCCI is talking about is making plans, even if at the contingency levels, for September onwards,” he said.

Dhumal hinted that BCCI could prioritise IPL over international cricket saying it’s easier to host domestic leagues.

“So, what are we witnessing here? Domestic leagues are in focus while the Olympics and the World Cups are taking a backseat. That’s because local leagues don’t depend on too many external factors to get going. Revenues are more localised; gate receipts aren’t such a huge concern and local leagues can be trimmed and planned to suit particular windows. They’re also television-friendly because they can be adjusted to primarily suit local prime time,” he said.

“Those announcements and outcomes are not in our hands. The T20 World Cup, for instance, is being postponed so let the announcement come when it has to.”

The IPL 2020 was supposed to begin in March this year but has been suspended indefinitely. The ICC is yet to decide on the T20 World Cup, which is currently scheduled for October-November in Australia. A postponement of the T20 World Cup will give BCCI a window to host the IPL.
