A day after BCCI president Sourav Ganguly revealed that the Asia Cup has been cancelled for this year, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) released an official statement confirming the development, postponing the biennial event to next year in June.

The 2020 edition was to be held in the United Arab Emirates with Pakistan as hosts. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the tournament has been delayed.

“The Executive Board of the ACC has met on multiple occasions to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Asia Cup tournament scheduled in September 2020,” ACC said in a media release on Thursday.

“From the onset, the Board was keen on organising the tournament as per the original schedule. However, travel restrictions, country-specific quarantine requirements, a threat to fundamental health and social distancing mandates have posed substantial challenges to the holding of the Asia Cup.”

“Above all, the risks related to health and safety of participating players, support staff, commercial partners, fans and the cricketing community were deemed to be significant. Accordingly, the Board, after careful consideration of all the above factors, has determined that the Asia Cup 2020 be postponed,” it added.

The previous edition of the continental tournament was also held in the UAE in 2018.

A meeting in June resulted in the possibility of Sri Lanka hosting the event but with the coronavirus situation worsening, ACC has decided to look for a new window.

“Conducting the event in a responsible manner remains the priority of the ACC and the Board is hopeful that the tournament will be held in 2021. The ACC is currently working towards securing June 2021 as a suitable window for the same,” the statement read.

The next edition, possibly in June 2021, will now be held in Sri Lanka.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has exchanged the hosting rights with their Sri Lankan counterpart meaning they will organise the event in 2022.

“It may also be noted that the hosts for the Asia Cup 2020, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), have exchanged hosting rights for the tournament with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). Through this arrangement, The SLC will now host the rescheduled Asia Cup expected in June 2021 while the PCB will host the Asia Cup 2022,” ACC said.

Prithvi Shaw Has The Ability of Virender Sehwag But Needs to Be More Disciplined Off The Field: Wasim Jaffer

    0
    Wasim Jaffer on Prithvi Shaw

Former India international and domestic stalwart Wasim Jaffer has drawn comparisons between Prithvi Shaw and batting legend Virender Sehwag but feels the former needs to maintain a more disciplined lifestyle off the field to succeed at the international level.

Branded as ‘Tendulkar Clone’, Shaw made a dazzling entry into Test cricket, hitting a century on debut against West Indies in 2018. However, last year he has handed a backdated eight-month doping ban by the BCCI.

The young Mumbai batsman made his international comeback earlier this year making ODI debut in New Zealand where again he put on display glimpse of his immense potential.

Jaffer, who announced his retirement earlier this year, feels Shaw has the game to dominate bowlers like Sehwag but discipline is an area that requires improvement.

“I also feel his lifestyle off the field, he (Shaw) needs to probably get more disciplined there. He has the game to succeed at the international level but he needs to be a lot more disciplined outside cricket also,” Jaffer Aakash Chopra during an interview on the latter’s YouTube channel.

“I think he is a special player, without a doubt and the (kind of) shots he plays. If he gets going, he has the ability of Virender Sehwag, who can completely demolish the attack,” added Jaffer, who announced his retirement in March this year,” he added.

Jaffer, the most prolific run-getter in Ranji history, has a word of advise for Shaw regarding his game too.

“But somewhere I feel, he needs to understand (his game), where he needs to take a little bit of backseat. He has been out couple of times on short balls and he falls into that trap. He needs to understand that,” Jaffer said.

Domestic Legend Wasim Jaffer Appointed As Uttarakhand Head Coach:

Former India opener and local heavyweight Wasim Jaffer has been delegated lead trainer of the Uttarakhand cricket crew for the forthcoming domestic season. Jaffer affirmed his appointment, agreeing for a year. The most noteworthy run-getter in Ranji Trophy, Jaffer had declared retirement in March this year after playing for more than two decades, fundamentally for domestic giants Mumbai and Vidarbha.

Coronavirus Pandemic May Have Set Back Growth of Women’s Cricket by Two Years: Mithali Raj

India ODI captain Mithali Raj reckons the coronavirus pandemic may have damaged the growth of women’s cricket and set it back by a couple of years.

Mithali, widely regarded as one of the greatest batters to have played the game, says the momentum created by India’s success at the ODI World Cup in 2017 and the T20 World Cup earlier this year has been lost.

“Unfortunately, women’s cricket may have been set back by a couple of years by this pandemic as some of the momentum that had been built between India’s success in World Cup 2017 and World T20 2020 has been lost,” Mithai said during a webinar.

Speaking at the ‘Re-Setting the Sports Ecosystem: Opportunities in The New Normal World’ at FICCI FRAMES, the 37-year-old revealed that constant discussions are being held with the BCCI to create a firm calendar for India women’s cricket team.

“However, we have had discussions with BCCI to draw up a firm calendar for the Indian women’s team so that fans can regularly cheer for the team,” she said.

With India making the final of the T20 World Cup in Australia this year, there were calls for fast-tracking women’s IPL. However, Mithali says the possibility of a full-fledged league is still 2-3 years away.

“The plans have obviously been disrupted but we believe we can re-build quickly. I think a full-fledged Women’s IPL is still 2-3 years away but we would certainly look to have a fourth team in the Women’s Challenge that is played concurrently with the IPL,” she said.

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Narinder Batra also attended the seminar and stressed on the importance of corporates supporting Indian sports.

“Corporates must adopt at least one Indian sport and broadcasters must allocate considerable time to promote them. Companies must realise that the wave of one athlete performing well can indirectly impact lakhs of others,” Batra said.

“We cannot expect the government to take upon itself the onus of building a world-class sporting environment when it is stretched between the many priorities of a developing economy, this is where the corporate India needs to step in, and it has to be a collective effort,” he added.

During the webinar, DG (SAI) Sandip Pradhan called for re-inventing and re-working prioritises.

“Being physical while leveraging digital is the new normal, so we need to re-set, re-invent and re-work our priorities,” Pradhan said.

“The SAI is organising several online sports classes in association with the National Sporting Federations, which includes interactive sessions with young athletes about their techniques and how to develop their overall physical skills and mental abilities,” he added.

Mohammed Shami Reveals Why he Will Have An Advantage Once BCCI Starts Camp

    0
    Mohammed Shami
    Mohammed Shami

Mohammed Shami has been at his sprawling ancestral home in Sahaspur where he has been constantly training during the lockdown period and that’s something, the India pacer believes, which gives him an advantage over his teammates who live in metros and may not have the luxury to train outdoors.

Shami’s home has a mini ground with equipped with the full facility to net practice.

Whenever BCCI starts a camp, Shami thinks he will have an advantage.

“Obviously I will have an advantage as I have been training quite regularly. This is different from an injury-induced break. I have been in good rhythm, and luckily, I don’t feel any stiffness while bowling full tilt,” he told PTI

“This is a phase when you always know that you are there and it’s a matter of time to get that rhythm back. It bolst09ers your confidence,” he added.

With ICC banning saliva to shine cricket ball to combat the spread of coronavirus, there’s been a lot of talk around how it will put bowlers at a disadvantage as they won’t be able to generate swing.

When asked about how an old red ball may behave when not applying saliva, Shami said he doesn’t know as he hasn’t tried that yet.

“If you don’t get proper conditions, you can’t try bowling with an old ball. I will tell you why…,” he explains.

“In the nets, the old ball that you use is the one that’s kept in a box for a few days, it will behave differently from a ball that’s getting old after continuous use in a match situation. Because a ball that gets old in a match situation is maintained throughout the course of the innings,” he added.

He says a proper answer can only be found in a match situation.

“The old ball that you suddenly bring out for practice will have a softer feel of the leather and that creates a difference. So, if you are looking at answers, you will only get it in a match simulation.

“So my next target during training is to start with a new ball and try to maintain it without saliva and then figure out how it behaves when it gets old. I will have to bowl with it and after maybe 20 overs when the batsman has faced it, then you get an idea how the ball behaves,” Shami said.

“People are asking me this question, but honestly, I have no answer. Because it’s a habit and a theory we have all believed and practised since our starting years. So, once we start trying, we will know better,” the 29-year-old said.

However, breaking the habit of using saliva isn’t an easy task, as Shami admits.

“Yes, its a conditioned reflex, so obviously I am forgetting at times but luckily stopping before I apply it on the ball,” he laughed. “So it’s a good thing that whenever I am training, I become very conscious and say, ‘no, I can’t use saliva’. The discipline is slowly coming.”

The forced breakdown, Shami says, has it’s positive and negative for professional cricket.

“There are two ways to look at it. The Indian team always has a packed schedule and it was a good break which allowed a tired body to heal,” Shami said.

“While on one side, you gain physically, become fitter and stronger with a lot of training but not playing the sport means that at the same time the rhythm is not there. Obviously, it’s something where you will find the difference. So there are pros and cons and its about managing your body,” he added.

Shami isn’t worried about workload saying all anyone can now think about his getting some game time having not played almost four months now.

“I prefer game time but, at the same time, one should have the knowledge as to how one’s body is reacting to various types of workload. Our team’s workload management has been great. I believe after such a long break, I don’t think that we need to think about workload and stuff. Because, right now, all I want is to be in a camp, think about my practice and start preparing for matches,” he said.

Recently, Shami revealed to Rohit Sharma during an Instagram chat how he was fighting with suicidal thoughts at one stage of his life.

“You should always talk to people around you, who care for you. You shouldn’t run away from situations. If there is a problem which you aren’t able to handle alone, please never shy away from seeking help and discuss with someone you can trust and confide in. But please talk,” he said.

Five-For Box Ticked, Now Time to Get a Hundred, Says Jason Holder

    0
    Jason Holder

West Indies captain Jason Holder said “my Test is far from over” after he rocked England with a career-best six-wicket haul on the second day of the series(England vs West Indies 1st Test) opener at Southampton on Thursday.

Holder, the world’s top-ranked all-rounder, took 6-42 as England were dismissed for 204 to surpass his previous Test-best of 6-59 against Bangladesh at Kingston two years ago.

It was the sixth time in his last 10 Tests that the towering paceman had taken five or more wickets in an innings, with Thursday’s return including the prize scalp of the rival all-rounder and stand-in England captain Ben Stokes.

West Indies have not won a Test series in England since 1988 but they hold the Wisden Trophy after a 2-1 success in the Caribbean last year — when Holder made an unbeaten double century in an opening win at his Barbados home ground.

“I have done a good job so far but my Test is far from over,” Holder told reporters after bad light forced an early close with West Indies 57-1, a deficit of 147 runs.

“I have a massive contribution to make with the bat,” the 28-year-old added.

Holder had been struggling with an ankle injury in the lead-up to the series — the first Test campaign since lockdown — but still troubled England with his accuracy and late movement.

Holder Uproots Big Wickets in the Second Day of the Test

He also led from the front.

West Indies had twice dropped Stokes, second in the Test all-rounder rankings, before Holder had him caught behind for 43, the top score of the innings, to end a stand of 67 with Jos Buttler (35).

“It was a big wicket to get,” said Holder. “We put down two chances and he was looking to make us pay.

“His partnership with Jos was starting to blossom into something that could really hurt us.

“But I was getting just enough movement to keep him at bay, keep him playing and eventually got the edge.”

Holder added he had a particular reason for wanting to do well in England this time.

“I really wanted to get on the honours board at Lord’s,” Holder said.

“We were scheduled to play there but then due to COVID they shuffled it around,” he added of a series where the bio-secure grounds of the Ageas Bowl and Old Trafford, the venue for the last two Tests, are being used instead.

“One of the things I have always strived to do is to score a hundred in England and get a five-wicket haul. I’ve ticked one box, now it’s time to knuckle down and get a hundred.”

England opted to leave out veteran paceman Stuart Broad and deploy fast bowlers Jofra Archer and Mark Wood together for the first time in a Test.

But although both Archer and Wood topped speeds of 90 mph, it was James Anderson — England’s all-time most successful Test bowler — who took the lone wicket of John Campbell.

“I think they are on top,” said Wood of the West Indies.

“They have done really well today, bowled really well, showed us the way to go.”

But Wood said the fact West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel took 4-62 meant he didn’t have to cut his pace.

“Gabriel got four wickets and he bowls quick, so that doesn’t mean me and Jofra need to bowl slower.”

BCCI Accepts Chief Executive Officer Rahul Johri’s Long-Pending Letter of Resignation

    0

The BCCI parted ways with its chief executive officer Rahul Johri after his long-pending resignation was accepted on Thursday.

While the top bosses in the BCCI remained tight-lipped about the development, a senior official in the know of things told PTI that they have decided to accept his resignation letter sent on 27 December.

“Rahul Johri’s resignation has been accepted. He was earlier given an extension till 30 April, but this time it has been accepted,” a BCCI veteran told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

It could not be exactly ascertained why the BCCI suddenly decided to accept his resignation.

However, there are conjectures about certain classified documents of the Board being leaked in public domain and fingers have been internally raised at Johri.

    Rahul Johri

“There should be at least some sanctity when it comes to dealing with official documents. The common refrain in BCCI corridors is that Johri didn’t keep that sanctity. If there is no trust, then how can people at the top believe him,” said a former BCCI official.

It is understood that the circulation of two specific mails in the media — Cricket Australia head Earl Eddings’ mail to ICC regarding the World T20 and one by CAG representative Alka Rehani Bhardwaj — brought about his downfall.

Johri, who joined the BCCI in 2016, had earlier put in his papers after the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) had made way for the Sourav Ganguly-led set-up leads the world’s richest cricket board.

But he was then asked to continue till the end of his contract, which was due to expire in 2021.

However, once the BCCI got back its administration, Johri was increasingly marginalized with his domain of work, including matters related to ICC, being handled by secretary Jay Shah.

Hardik Pandya along with his brother Krunal and wife Pankhuri took a chartered flight to Ranchi to be with the ace player on his special day.

As reported in Mumbai Mirror, the Pandyas boarded a chartered flight from Vadodara and landed at Ranchi at around 5 pm. The trio then directly left for Dhoni’s farmhouse to celebrate the day.

Speaking to the daily, Shishir Hattangadi, the CEO of the Baroda Cricket Association said, “It’s a sweet gesture by the two. I did not know about it but, I can tell you their (the Pandyas) heart is at the right place.”

Hardik had also shared some unseen pictures with Mahi to wish the Captain Cool. Sharing a series of snaps, the flamboyant cricketer wrote, “Happy birthday to my Bittu from your Chittu My friend, who has taught me to be a better human being and stood by me in bad times” along with red heart and kiss face emojis.

Joining the beeline was Hardik’s older brother Krunal, who picked a snap from Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) for the day. Along with still, which saw both players in action, Krunal said, “Mahi bhai! Happy birthday to a legend and the coolest guy around”.

IPL 2020 : New Zealand Hasn’t Offered to Host IPL 2020 as NZC Spokesperson Rejects Claim

New Zealand Hasn't Offered to Host IPL 2020

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has denied reports claiming that it has offered to host the suspended Indian Premier League (IPL) this year even as BCCI contemplates to organise the cash-rich event amid the coronavirus pandemic.

As per several reports, New Zealand became the country after UAE and Sri Lanka to have told BCCI it’s ready to host the annual event in case it’s not possible to be held in India which has become third-worst infected country after USA and Brazil.

NZC spokesperson Richard Boock has said the board hasn’t had any talks with the BCCI expressing interest in hosting IPL 13.

“The report is simply speculation. We have not offered to host the IPL nor have we had an approach to do so,” NZC spokesperson Boock was quoted as saying by Radio New Zealand.

News agency PTI had quoted an unnamed BCCI official as claiming that New Zealand has made the offer.

The Indian cricket board is hopeful of organising the league in September-October window in place of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup which in all likeliness will be cancelled.

Cricket Australia has already state that organising an event of the scale of a world cup is unrealistic this year due to the logistical nightmares that will arise amid the restrictions in place to combat the deadly virus.

With several cases rising in India, there’s a real possibility of IPL being shifted out of the country as in the past.

In 2009, due to the general election, the entire second season was held in South Africa and the 2014 season also was partially held outside the country.

Sri Lanka Cricket(SLA) proposal to Host IPL 2020

Speaking to Lankadeepa Newspaper, SLC President Shammi Silva said that India is likely to look into Sri Lanka’s proposal if the coronavirus situation subsides in the neighbouring country.

“If IPL is called off, Indian Cricket board and IPL stakeholders will have to bear a loss of more than USD 500 Million. So, it will be beneficial for them to conduct the league in another country as they did in 2009 in South Africa,” said Silva.

Silva also said that Sri Lanka has all the facilities and is awaiting a response from BCCI. “If we get the go-ahead from them to this proposal, we are ready to provide all the facilities necessary under the supervision of Sri Lankan health authorities,” he added.

“The health and safety of the nation and everyone involved in our great sport remain our top priority and as such, the BCCI along with the Franchise Owners, Broadcaster, Sponsors and all the Stakeholders acknowledge that the IPL 2020 season will only commence when it is safe and appropriate to do so,” a BCCI release stated.

WATCH : Michael Holding’s Powerful Speech on Black Lives Matter Goes Viral

    0

West Indies fast bowling legend has delivered a powerful, thought-provoking speech on the ongoing Black Lives Matter calling out the systematic brainwashing and need for educating both sides to eradicate racism.

Holding cited examples from history on how blacks were dehumanised through various events and it’s something that should never be forgotten.

“Education is important unless we want to continue living the life that we are living and want to continue having demonstrations now and again and a few people saying a few things. When I say education, I mean going back in history. What people need to understand is that thing stems from a long time ago, hundreds of years ago,” Holding said on Sky Sports.

“The dehumanisation of the black race is where it started. People will tell you that’s a long time ago, get over it. No, you don’t get over things like that and society has not gotten over something like that,” he added.

Holding, a feared fast bowler of his era, said education is necessary for ridding the society of racism.

“How do you get rid of that in society? By educating both sides – black and white,” the 66-year-old.

Delving into religion, Holding said Jesus Chris has been depicted as white while Judas, who betrayed him, is a black man and that is how people have been brainwashed over centuries.

“We have been brainwashed and not just black people, white people have been brainwashed in many ways. Think about religion I am not really a very holy person, not a very religious person but that is what we were taught.

“Look at Jesus Christ and the image of Jesus Christ – pale skin, blonde hair, blue eyes. Where Jesus came from, who in that part of the world looks that way? Again, that is brainwashing to show you what the image of perfection is. If you look at the plays of those days, Judas who betrayed Jesus, he’s a black man. Again, brainwashing people to think ‘he is a black man, he is the bad man,” he observed.

He continued, “These lights that are shining on us. You can tell me who invented the lightbulb – Thomas Edison invented the lightbulb. Thomas Edison invented a lightbulb with a paper filament – it burned out in no time at all.”

“Can you tell me who invented the filament that makes these lights shine throughout? Nobody knows because it was a black man. I was not taught in schools – Lewis Howard Latimer invented the carbon filament to allow lights to continuously shine. Who knows that?”

He reiterated the importance of education and avoid selective teaching.

players taking a knee in support of the Black Lives Matter campaign

“Everything should be taught. When you go back through schooling as a young man, I remember my school days. I was never taught anything good about black men. You cannot have a society that was brought up like that – both white and black – only teach what is convenient to the teacher,” he said.

“History is written by the conqueror, not by those who are conquered. History is written by the people who do the harming, not those who are harmed. We need to go back and teach both sides of history,” he added.

Both England and West Indies cricketers took a knee before the start of their first Test in Southampton on Wednesday as a mark of solidarity towards the BLM movement.

Domestic Cricket Will Happen Only When Travelling is Safe, Can’t Expose Young Players: Sourav Ganguly

The Indian domestic season will only start when it is safe for young players to travel within the country for their Ranji Trophy matches, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly said.

There is huge uncertainty with regards to India’s domestic tournaments as IPL will be happening in October leading to a curtailed season due to coronavirus.

The 2020-21 domestic season would have started with Vijay Hazare in late August followed Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Last season’s Irani Cup was cancelled due to announcement of Lockdown 1.

Asked about domestic cricket and junior cricket, Ganguly told Sports Tak, “It is necessary, but it will happen only after coronavirus. When it is safe, only then, especially junior cricket.”

Irani Cup Duleep Trophy Ranji Trophy

Ganguly reasoned that India was a large country and teams needed to travel from one place to another for their matches and hence domestic cricket won’t start till everything is safe.

“We don’t want to expose young players. Our country is so large and our domestic cricket is so robust that everyone has to travel and play. So till the time, it is safe, it will not happen,” clarified the BCCI boss.

Similarly, there are various tournaments for age-group cricket.

India on Thursday recorded single-day spike of 24,879 COVID-19 cases as the overall tally mounted to 7,67,296. The death toll stood at 21,129 with 487 new fatalities, as per the Union health ministry.

    Ganguly on Asia Cup 2020:

BCCI president Ganguly on Wednesday declared the wiping out of the Asia Cup. Even though the previous India skipper didn’t offer clarification or explanation for it, the inability to choose a host country appears to have purportedly reassessed the competition.

“In December, we have the first full series. Asia Cup 2020 has been called-off which was scheduled to take place in September,” Ganguly told ‘Sports Tak’ in an Instagram live session.

However, Hasan has countered Ganguly’s claims, saying an announcement of such importance can only be made by President of the ACC. “The statements made by Sourav Ganguly have no impact on proceedings. Even if he passes comments every week, they do not hold weight or merit,” Hasan said.

West Indies pacer Shannon Gabriel described players taking a knee in support of the Black Lives Matter campaign before the first Test between England and West Indies as a ‘great moment’.

Both teams’ players took the knee before the first ball was bowled while wearing Black Lives Matter logos on their shirts.

“It was a great moment, showing something we stand for and that racism has no part in cricket,” West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel, who took the only wicket to fall on the first day, told the BBC.

“We felt like we wanted to do something different, we felt if we wanted to make a bigger statement we should wear the black glove and it worked as people are talking about it,” West Indies assistant coach Roddy Estwick told reporters.

“That was our way of showing our support to the Black Lives Matter campaign.”

England batting coach Graham Thorpe said: “It’s important to show solidarity with the West Indies. The bottom line is we feel there is no room for racism in the sport.”

Earlier Windies Skipper Jason Holder indicated in his first question and answer session of the visit that West Indies would hope to help the development somehow or another, and said in an announcement on Sunday: “We believe we have a duty to show solidarity and also to help raise awareness.”

The logo utilized will be that ragged on the shirts of every one of the 20 Premier League football clubs since the game’s restart recently, structured by Alisha Hosannah, whose accomplice Troy Deeney is Watford’s commander. Deeney was reached by CWI for endorsement, and the ICC gave consent for the token to be worn on the groups’ collars.
