Kapil Dev Advices to Virat Kohli Ahead of the England Tour

India legend Kapil Dev is confident that Virat Kohli will continue to pile on the runs despite his century drought but has cautioned the skipper against over-aggression.

    Kapil Dev Advice to Kohli

“I expect him to excel,” Kapil told Mid-Day. “Can you really shackle him? He is a natural when it comes to adapting but I would caution him to not be over-aggressive. He will have to measure it session by session. He’ll be better off waiting for his moments of dominance.”

“He will get his runs with a bit of patience. Trying too hard and too early doesn’t work in England where you need to watch the movement of the ball. If you play seam and swing well, show patience, you will succeed in England,” he added.

More than personal milestones, Kohli will be focused on leading his team to a series victory in England which they last managed in 2007. Last time, India were beaten 4-1 in a five-match series.

Before 2007, it was in 1986 under the captaincy of Kapil that India had registered a series win in England.

The 62-year-old has said it won’t be an easy task for the touring party to get the better of England as they are quite good in their own conditions.

“I want this team to remember that England in England is tough. They are a very good team when playing at home but then, it will also depend on how the Indian bowlers adapt to the conditions and pitches. The swing will be very rewarding and here I feel England are one step ahead of India,” Kapil said.

During the 2018 Test series in England, Virat Kohli corrected an anomaly. Despite his surreal consistency across formats, Kohli was always reminded of not having scored runs in England with his struggles during the 2014 tour being a constant reminder when he managed a mere 135 runs in 10 innings.

However, in 2018, Kohli, who had by then established his reputation as the world’s premier batter across formats, went on to accumulate 593 runs from five Tests. Now, he’s all set for his third Test tour of the country with India set to plat six matches starting with the final of the ICC World Test Championship in Southampton next month.

Taking to Twitter, the official handle of BCCI Women posted a video of the players working out in the gym and the caption read: “Shut the Noise! We are INDIA.”

The women’s team will take on England in a one-off Test, three ODIs, and three T20Is. The two teams will first square off in a four-day Test match, beginning June 16.

Then both teams will lock horns in three ODIs beginning June 27 with the matches slated to be played at Bristol, Taunton, and Worcester. Both teams will then square off in three T20Is, beginning July 9 and the three matches will be played at Northampton, Hove, and Chelmsford.

The third T20I between England Women and India Women, which was slated for July 15, will now be held a day before in Chelmsford. The third T20I will now be held on July 14 instead of July 15 due to broadcasting issues.

“Date Change. For broadcast purposes, the third Vitality IT20 between England Women and India Women at the Cloudfm County Ground will now be played on Wednesday, 14 July,” England Cricket had tweeted on Tuesday.

    Mithali Raj Trolls his Father

Distribution of food grains and a small amount for sustenance being given to auto drivers by the Mithali raj initiative, something I started last year to do my bit in these COVID times. Dad doing the honours in my absence. The only problem is his mask.

Mithali is currently serving two-week strict quarantine in Mumbai ahead of Team India’s departure to England for an all-format tour. Both the Indian men and women team would travel to England on June 2 in a chartered flight.

While the men’s team would spend another 10 days in quarantine in Southampton, the women’s team would most likely stay in Bristol.

“Several people have lost their livelihood because of the pandemic and lockdown. Ours is a small initiative to help the needy,” Mithali’s mother Leela Raj told TOI on Wednesday. “We are providing rice, wheat, dal, oil, other essentials, and some money to buy vegetables,” she added.

“Actually, the purpose of our initiative is different. We launched it last year. But due to the lockdown, we could not go ahead with our project. But with a lot of people suffering now, we decided to take the initiative forward and help them in a small way,” she added.

Auto drivers apart, help to the underprivileged children is also on the cards. “Our plan is to help talented underprivileged children with rural backgrounds achieve their dreams. It’s not just cricket, we want to cover all other sports. Our aim is to provide them with sports kits, help them train in the best of academics so that they can achieve their dreams,” Leela Raj added.

India Women team would start their UK tour with a one-off Test against England in Bristol, starting June 16. After the Test match, India and England would face each other in three-match ODI and as many T20I series.

Mithali would lead the Indian squad in Test as well as in ODIs series and Harmanpreet Kaur was named skipper for the T20Is.

Earlier, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the central contract for the senior women’s national players, and Mithali was rewarded with a Grade B contract as she no longer plays in T20Is.

Mithali had announced her retirement from the shortest format of the game in 2019.

Australia’s Pat Cummins picks Indian skipper Virat Kohli to play at No. 5 position in his Test XI.

Pat Cummins picks Kohli for his playing XI

During a Q&A session, he answered one of the fans, as to which three players would he pick in his playing XI?. Pat Cummins is currently placed in quarantine in Sydney upon his arrival from the Maldives and is active on his Youtube Channel.

“I would probably have Kane Williamson at No.3, Steve Smith at No.4, maybe Kohli at No.5. In any order, but I would have those three,” said Cummins.

Kohli was last seen in action in IPL 2021, that was suspended due to rising Covid-19 cases in India. But before that, Kohli had managed to score 198 runs in 7 matches. RCB was third in the points table and was looking to go the distance this time around.

Meanwhile, now Team India will be seen in action soon, during the tour of England where they are scheduled to play the WTC final and five Tests against England.

Kohli would be raring to go, as the Indian skipper hasn’t managed to score a ton since 2019. With six Tests in the pipeline, it could be an opportunity for him to break the jinx. The last time he scored a ton was against Bangladesh in D/N Test in November 2019.

While there are many modern-day greats in cricket, but no one comes close to India skipper Virat Kohli. Along with consistent performances, he boasts of exceptional numbers, that too in all three formats of the game.

In 91 Tests, he has scored 7490 runs at an average of over 52, while in ODIs, in 254 matches, he has 12169 runs at an astounding average of 59. In the T20Is, he is equally successful and has scored 3159 runs in 89 encounters.

Also, he has a tally of 70 tons at the age of 32. A player of his stature is bound to make it to the playing XI of any given side in the world.

WTC Finals: Kyle Jamieson Excites to Bowl with Dukes Ball

Pace bowler Kyle Jamieson, whose first six Test matches powered New Zealand into World Test Championship (WTC) final against India, ensured during Indian Premier League that his franchise skipper Virat Kohli didn’t get to face him with the Dukes ball he was carrying for practice.

Kyle Jamieson Gears up for Dukes Ball

On his first tour of England, Jamieson would have the likes of Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, and Doug Bracewell and the youngster can follow their footsteps in order to achieve success in the UK.

“Their experience will be really helpful, from the guys like Tim, Wags, Doug and even Henry as well, who’s played a lot over here. There’s so much experience around English conditions and what the Duke ball can do. So I’ll try and look and lean on for the next few weeks,”  says Jamieson.

When asked about the challenges of bowling with the Duke ball, Jamieson said: “It’s is certainly a bit different – it’s a bit darker and harder as well, and the seam is a little bit more narrow. So it’s just about trying to get used to that and the hands.”

“There have been conversations around what the Duke ball can do, but whilst being mindful of the fact that you don’t want to go searching too much and try to move the ball too much, and then getting caught on the bounce a little bit. So I’m sure over the next few days we’ll have a few more conversations on what it looks like and then go from there,” he added.

Jamieson has played 6 Test matches for New Zealand and has picked 36 wickets at an average of 13.27. Jamieson has also scored 226 runs with the bat with an impressive average of 56.5.

Interestingly, NZ have won all six Test matches Jamieson has played in. England and New Zealand will be locking horns in two Tests, beginning June 2 at Lord’s Cricket Ground.

Karsan Ghavri Explains Why BCCI Rejects Jaydev Unadkat?

    0
    jaydev unadkat
    jaydev unadkat

Former Indian pacer Karsan Ghavri, who was also the Saurashtra coach, spill the reason why BCCI fails to give an international call to Jaydev Unadkat.

    Why BCCI rejects Jaydev Unadkat?

Unadkat bagged a whopping 67 wickets in just 10 matches at a stunning bowling average of 13.23 and strike rate of 28.2 with as many as 7 five-wicket hauls in an innings and 3 ten-wicket hauls in a match in the 2019-20 edition of the Ranji Trophy.

Despite having an impressive domestic performance Unadkat fails to continue his form in the followed IPL season. Unadkat had a poor season in IPL 2020 in the UAE returning with just 4 wickets in 7 matches and was also tonked around for aplenty going at 9.91 runs per over.

“I asked a selector during the Ranji Trophy final (2019-20) that if a bowler takes more than 60 wickets and has taken his team into the final of the Ranji Trophy single-handedly, shouldn’t he be at least picked for India A. That selector told me: ‘Kadu bhai, he won’t be picked for India anymore. His name is not even considered by us when we think of 30-odd players.’ ‘Why not, I asked him.’ ‘Then what’s the point of him picking so many wickets? I was told that ‘he’s already 32-33. Age is spoiling his case. It has put a full stop to his India career,” Ghavri told TOI.

The selector also shockingly revealed that they would invest on a youngster who can play for India for a long period of time.

“Why should we invest in an older player? We would rather pick a 21, 22 or a 23-year-old player if he’s good, he can serve India for 8-10-12 years. If we pick Unadkat today, how many years will he serve India for?’ This is what that selector told me,” Ghavri added. Apart from one Test match, Unadkat has also featured in seven ODIs and ten T20Is.

Instead, an inexperienced and relatively new in the circuit, Arzan Nagwaswalla has been selected as the only left-arm in the squad of 24. India boasts of a world-class pace attack but all in the quartet are right-arm fast and so are the reserves Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur.

With an experienced, in-form, at the peak of his prowess Unadkat in great form in the long format and with India needing variety in their attack, it was the perfect opportunity for India to give Unadkat a ticket to England – especially when T Natarajan – the young left-armer who impressed in Australia – was not part of the squad.

NZ Cricket Legend Richard Hadlee Hails Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah is prone and vulnerable to injuries due to his unorthodox bowling action but India fast bowler’s technique has proved highly effective in helping him catch batsmen off guard, said former New Zealand allrounder Richard Hadlee.

    Richard Hadlee hails Bumrah

“Jasprit fits into the unorthodox bowling category with virtually no run up to the crease. His technique, in some ways, defies belief but has proved to be a highly effective one. He is what I call a shoulder or strength bowler with all his power and pace coming from the final part of his action as he releases the ball,” said Hadlee in an interview with the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The Kiwi, a former pace bowler himself, said he is unsure about Bumrah’s longevity in cricket.

“Jasprit’s longevity in the game is yet to be determined. I suspect he could be more vulnerable to injury problems than those fast bowlers with more classical and pure actions or techniques.”

    Jasprit Bumrah
    Jasprit Bumrah

Hadlee, who himself was known to have a perfect and smooth bowling action, said that Bumrah’s injuries could be career-threatening but he causes problems to batsmen due to his unconventional action.

“Some of his potential injuries could be severe because of the stresses and strains he places on his body. I hope any injuries he may incur will not be potentially career ending because he is a delight to watch, and he causes batsmen all sorts of problems with his unsuspecting pace, bounce, and ball movement in the air and off the pitch,” added Hadlee.

“It would be very difficult to coach his technique to an aspiring fast bowler and I think a coach would refrain from doing from that because biomechanically it could cause problems with injury. However, I suspect some youngsters may try to imitate him. I believe you let aspiring young fast bowlers do it their way but help to fine-tune some the skill sets and finer subtleties of bowling,” he said further.

The 69-year-old, who formed a legendary quartet of all-rounders with Imran Khan, Ian Botham, and Kapil Dev during the late 1970s and 1980s also said cricket needs India due to the revenue it generates and also strides it has made in Test cricket that has kept the longest format of the game alive.

“There is no doubt India produces a lot of revenue for cricket. Without India, the face of world cricket would be very different, therefore cricket needs India,” said Hadlee.

“But India has also made an outstanding contribution to Test cricket — like in all formats. Their Test performances in Australia were outstanding despite that 36 all out blip. They bounced back superbly, and Test cricket came alive again. So many youngsters came into the team and performed. It showed the great depth of talented players India have in all formats,” Hadlee added.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) owners have come forward for a noble cause as they have pledged to donate a sum of INR 45 crores for India’s fight against COVID19 as the country continues to battle the second wave of the deadly virus.

RCB donates to COVID19 relief fund

RCB’s parent company “Diageo” has pledged to donate INR 45 crore to enhance public healthcare infrastructures in one district of each state and union territory in India.

The franchise owners have also set up oxygen plants in government hospitals of 21 districts to create long-term oxygen capacity. In addition, they have also provided 16-bed mini-hospital units in another 15 cities to increase bed capacity.

“We will set up Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) Oxygen Plants in Government Hospitals in 21 districts to create long-term Oxygen capacity. Along with it, the RCB will provide fully equipped, pre-fabricated 16-bed mini-hospital units with PSA Oxygen Plants in another 15 critical districts to increase bed capacity.”

“Further the RCB will donate medical equipment including Oxygen concentrators, Oxygen cylinders, ventilator beds, and other critical patient care devices to hospitals across 10 states to address immediate needs,” said the Diageo/RCB management in a statement.

Anand Kripalu, MD, Diageo, and Chairman of the RCB, said: “At a time when the country is facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, we want to support the government’s efforts and stand by the citizens of India.

Long-term medical infrastructure especially hospital beds and self-sufficiency in Oxygen are what is needed most and we hope our contribution will go into every state and it will help play a part in India’s recovery.”

    Virushka initiated COVID19 Relief Fund

Earlier this month, RCB skipper and batting megastar Virat Kohli and his better half Anushka Sharma had announced an initiative to raise funds for COVID-19 relief.

The couple had announced that they have started a campaign on Ketto to raise funds for Covid-19 relief and asked everyone to support the campaign through a donation.

The funds from the campaign are allotted to ACT grants for tackling the immediate shortage of oxygen supply. The campaign has a goal of INR 7 crore and has already crossed the 4 crore mark. In fact, the celebrity couple had made a donation of INR 2 crores.

Shahid Afridi and Naseem Shah has been ruled out of the remainder of the Pakistan Super League(PSL).

Shahid Afridi, Naseem Shah Ruled out of PSL

Multan Sultans allrounder Shahid Afridi will not get part in the remainder of the PSL after being sidelined with a lower-back injury. While Quetta Gladiators fast-bowler Naseem Shah miss the remainder of the league after he was released following a breach of Covid-19 protocols.

Shah arrived at the tournament hotel in Lahore with a negative Covid-19 test, but from a non-compliant PCR test. As a result, he will not travel to Abu Dhabi with the rest of the Quetta Gladiators contingent, ruling him out of the competition.

Babar Hamid, the director and commercial head of PSL 6, said the decision had been taken with a heavy heart but emphasized that the league would make no compromises on health and safety this time around.

“The PCB doesn’t take any pride in releasing a young fast bowler from its marquee event but if we will ignore this breach, then we will potentially put at risk the entire event,” he said.

“We appreciate Quetta Gladiators for accepting this decision as it confirms we are all aligned to strictly following and implementing the protocols.

“This decision will also send out a loud and clear message to all involved in the remaining matches that the PCB will not compromise on any violations and will expel the player or player support personnel irrespective of his stature and standing in the game if they are found to be flouting the prescribed protocols or regulations.”

Both the Sultans and the Gladiators have plenty of ground to make up when the league resumes, having struggled to race out of the blocks when the league initially launched in February. They have each won just one of the five matches they played, and currently both sit outside the top four.

Islamabad United have also included batsman Umar Amin and West Indian opener Brandon King, while Afghanistan’s Hazratullah Zazai pairs up with Peshawar Zalmi. The league is set to resume on June 5, with the final due to take place on June 20.

Balaji Explains Why Youngsters Wanted To Become Like Bumrah

    0
    laxmipathy balaji

Lakxmipathy Balaji, the former India fast bowler and currently the Bowling Coach of the Chennai Super Kings, in an Exclusive with Cricketnext, spoke about the evolution of fast bowling in India from the time of Kapil Dev to the prevailing era dominated by Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma.

    Balaji Lauds Bumrah

Balaji stated that unlike before, when batsmen like Tendulkar or Kohli were the stars for millions of young aspiring cricketers in India, times had changed and now a large percentage of the youngsters also want to become a Bumrah or a Shami or a Sharma.

“The current Indian pace attack has evolved over a period. There was a role model in Kapil Dev in the 1980s and later we had Manoj Prabhakar and Javagal Srinath. These people set the tone in the 1980s and 1990s as fast bowlers.

    Jasprit Bumrah
    Jasprit Bumrah

Look at the number of players who have made their debuts in the last five or six years. It is large. They have a lot of opportunities across all formats. If you are able to get recognition at the first-class level or the IPL, you are not going to be ignored.

Many missed out in the 1980s and 1990s. In the recent past, the best thing that has happened is the rotation of players. Good talent is hardly missed. The opportunities and talents are justified,” said Balaji.

Balaji added that there was no system of rotation policy earlier and the only way for a fast bowler to replace the other was via injuries. He added that with the advent of T20 cricket and the mushrooming of T20 leagues like the IPL, a lot more avenues were created for the pacers to perform and excel in and thereby get noticed.

“In the previous eras, injury for one gives an opportunity for another. With an exceptional first-class record, you played for India ‘A’. Some have finished as only as India ‘A’ players. You waited and waited for an opportunity till someone got injured.

Today, it is about rotation. You have a wider circle, a lot of players get to experience international cricket. They are also thriving on that. It is about the right talent getting the right opportunity at the right time during the peak of their careers. It is not anymore about getting selected prematurely or after their prime,” stated the CSK bowling coach.

Balaji further stated that a large talent pool of fast bowlers is, in turn, changing the domination of batsmen as role models for budding cricketers in the country. He said that in the past every one either wanted to become a Gavaskar or a Tendulkar or a Kohli but now youngsters also want to be a Bumrah, Shami, Sharma, or Yadav.

    Mohammed Shami
    Mohammed Shami

“This is a major transformation of the current crop of fast bowlers in India. Earlier, nine out of 10 youngsters wanted to become a Virat Kohli or a Sachin Tendulkar, or an MS Dhoni. Nowadays, they want to be like Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd Shami, or Zaheer Khan.”

Balaji then highlighted the pedigree in India’s fast bowling unit and revealed what each bowler brought to the table.

“The importance of fast bowling is defined with Bumrah’s pace, Shami’s modern-day skill sets, Ishant Sharma’s huge experience. T Natarajan, in recent times, has gone from a remote place in Tamil Nadu to playing international cricket, filling in the void of a left-arm seamer. All these are a result of the evolution of fast bowlers and which is why India is able to take 20 wickets in Tests consistently,” added Balaji.

Suryakumar Yadav registers his name in international cricket format by hitting an impressive six of the very first ball he faced in his debut match.

He made his debut in the 2nd T20I against England but he did not get to bat. Suryakumar missed the 3rd T20I, but then returned in the 4th match to smash 51 runs off 37 balls.

SKY became the first Indian and third overall cricketer to smash the first ball in T20 international for a six. Suryakumar hooked pacer Jofra Archer for a six after coming on to bat at number three.

Suryakumar Yadav Opens on Hitting First ball six

Speaking in a recent video uploaded on Mumbai Indians’ Youtube channel, Suryakumar Yadav said revealed how excited was he to go and bat for the first time in an Indian jersey.

“If you must have seen, I was very excited at that time. Obviously, I wasn’t happy because Rohit Sharma had just got out. But when it was going in, I was so excited, I ran in to bat. I had waited for a long time (for this opportunity),” he said.

“Sitting in the dressing room, I had thoughts like – when will the match start? When will my turn come to bat? When I wore my pads and came out to sit in the dugout, I was a little nervous. It is important to be nervous. If you are not nervous, how will you go in and perform?” Suryakumar Yadav added.

“As I was running in to bat, everything started running in my mind. I was thinking what do I do when I bat at number three for other teams, not only for Mumbai Indians but even for my state back home. I got an answer when I was taking my guard, that I shouldn’t do anything different. I just need to keep playing as I have done throughout my career. Be yourself. I have reached this point by doing the same things,” he further said.

The batsman recalled the six he hit off England pacer Jofra Archer on the first ball itself that showcased his intentions.

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer has applied for the role of Mumbai head coach along with domestic stalwart Amol Mazumdar and former leg-spinner Sairaj Bahutule.

Wasim Jaffer Applied for Mumbai Head Coach

The post was vacated by Ramesh Powar who was appointed as the head coach of the senior national women’s team earlier this month.

A total of 9 candidates applied for the Mumbai head coach post before the May 24 deadline. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) had last week sought applications with eligibility criteria of minimum 50 first-class matches after Powar had to leave role.

Former India pacer Balwinder Singh Sandhu, a member of the 1983 World Cup Winning India team, has also applied for the post.

It is understood that among others who have applied are former keeper-batsman Sulkashan Kulkarni, pacer Pradeep Sunderram, Nandan Phadnis, Umesh Patwal and Vinod Raghvan.

Jaffer is the most experienced among the candidates with 31 Tests. He had worked with the Punjab Kings side in IPL 2021.

Muzumdar, a former Mumbai captain under whom the team won the coveted Ranji Trophy, has been a batting coach with the NCA, IPL team Rajasthan Royals, and also a consultant when South African played against India in 2019.

Bahutule, who played two Tests and eight ODIs for India, is a domestic stalwart, having played 188 first-class games, in which he picked staggering 630 wickets. He has coached Vidarbha, Kerala, Bengal and has been Gujarat’s coach for the past two seasons.

Last season, Mumbai had initially appointed Amit Pagnis as the coach for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, but after its disastrous show, Pagnis then stepped down.

MCA turned to Powar before the Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign and the former off-spinner delivered instantly, helping the team win the tournament earlier this year.
