WTC 2021 Finals: Deep Dasgupta Slams Indian Batting Unit

Former Indian wicket-keeper batsman Deep Dasgupta has lashed out at India’s batting unit for their inconsistency. The Indian team could only manage 217 and 170 runs in each of the innings of the World Test Championship final against New Zealand at Ageas Bowl, Southampton.

    Deep Dasgupta Slams India

In fact, none of the Indian batsmen was able to get past the 50-run mark. Ajinkya Rahane top-scored for the team with 49 runs in the first dig but no Indian batsmen was able to convert his start into a substantial score. Thus, the pressure was on the bowlers to deliver the goods as India posted an under-par score of 217 runs.

Meanwhile, the Indian bowlers were able to keep the team in the contest as they bundled out the New Zealand team for 249 runs in the first innings. However, India once again could not take advantage of the bat as they were dismissed after scoring 170 runs.

Shubman Gill dismissed for 28 and 8 runs in the WTC 21 finals
Shubman Gill dismissed for 28 and 8 runs in the WTC 21 finals

“No matter how well you bowl, you will have to score a few runs to win games. You can’t score 200-250 every time and expect your bowlers to do the work. Bowlers are doing their bit for the last 3-4 years. But to be a champion side, it is important for both batting and bowling units to work,” Dasgupta said on his YouTube channel.

The Indian batting hasn’t been consistent in the SENA countries and it has led to the downfall of the team as the pace battery has taken giant strides.

“Since 2016, Indian batsmen have crossed 350 just thrice in SENA countries, and have taken 37 innings to do so. If you look at the averages, only two have their averages over 40 (Virat Kohli – 43.03 and Gill – 42.14), two have it in their 20s (Rahane – 29.81 and Rohit Sharma – 29), and one in their 30s (Pujara – 38.03). This needs to be sorted out.

“India were 148/3 in the first innings. The partnership with Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane was going so well. It all unravelled in the first hour of Day 3 as they bundled out for 217. It is difficult to win a match when you score 217 and 170. Let’s be very honest and say that batsmen didn’t do as well. They didn’t live up to expectations. Admittedly the conditions weren’t great for batting, but looking at the position India were in and the kind of experience they have on offer, they should have reached 300 at least,” he added.

England wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler had to miss the second T20 International against Sri Lanka on Thursday due to a calf strain he suffered in Wednesday’s first T20 match.

    Jos Buttler sustain Calf Injury

“Buttler misses out with calf injury, [Chris] Woakes rested,” said a statement on ecb.co.uk.

“One forced change, Jos picked up a calf strain yesterday, and Chris Woakes can’t play two days in a row, so Dave Willey takes the new ball,” said England captain Eoin Morgan said at the toss which was won by Sri Lanka who chose to bat.

Buttler had smashed an unbeaten 55-ball 68 in England`s eight-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the first T20I.

The right-handed batsman`s innings, laced with eight boundaries and a six, earned him the Player-of-the-Match award.

The 30-year-old Buttler was in the news recently after he said that traveling to Australia for Ashes without families would be tough for the players.

ENG vs IND 2021: India Set to Play Couple of Practice Matches

Learning from India’s ICC World Test Championship final defeat, BCCI is set to request with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to arrange a couple of practice games for the touring party before they start their five-match series in August.

    India to play Practise Match

India cricketers last played a Test in March this year before facing New Zealand in the WTC final earlier this month, a contest they went on to lose by eight wickets.

On the other hand, New Zealand seemed well prepared having faced England in a two-match Test series in the lead up to the marquee clash. Stung by the defeat and perhaps with the long gap before the start of the Test series against England, BCCI wants two warm-up matches for Virat Kohli’s men.

“Jay (Shah) will be speaking to ECB and its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tom Harrison to make an arrangement for two warm-up games before the five-Test match series,” BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal told The IE.

“The secretary felt that the BCCI should request the ECB to give at least two warm-up games so that players can get in some good match practice before the series starts,” he added.

The Indian players reportedly left for London on Thursday from where they will disperse. The players have been given a 20-day break before assembling on July 14.

The players are expected to travel to various destinations within UK and should spectators be allowed, few are keen to attend Wimbledon too. After assembling in London,  the squad will head to Nottingham where the first Test is scheduled to be played from August 4.

The WTC final was marred by rain but the reserve day enabled the contest to finish with a champion when New Zealand easily chased down the target of 139 to become the inaugural winners.

WTC Finals: Ishant Sharma Injured, Gets Three Stitches in Bowling Hand

India pacer Ishant Sharma suffered an injury to his bowling hand while stopping a ball during the World Test Championship final at the Ageas Bowl and had to get three stitches. But the pacer is expected to be fit in time for the England Tests.

Ishant Sharma injured in Bowling Hand

Speaking to ANI, sources in the know of developments said the pacer suffered the injury while bowling in New Zealand`s second innings.

“Ishant hurt his bowling hand while stopping the ball and had to get three stitches. But he should be ready for the Tests against England which starts on August 4,” the source said.

Coming back to the WTC final, India skipper Virat Kohli said he would have been happier with a best-of-three final rather than just one game.

“Well, look, firstly, I’m not in absolute agreement of deciding the best Test side in the world over the course of one game, to be very honest. If it is a Test series, it has to be a test of character over three Tests, which team has the ability to come back into the series or totally blow away the other team.

It can’t just be pressure applied over two days of good cricket and then you suddenly are not a good Test side anymore. I don’t believe in that,” said Kohli while replying to an ANI query during a virtual press conference.

“I think it has to be a hard grind and something that definitely needs to be worked on in the future to really — at the end of three matches, there’s effort, there`s ups and downs, there are situations changing throughout the course of the series, a chance to rectify the things that you’ve done wrong in the first game and then really see who’s the better side over the course of a three-match series or something will be a good measure of how things really are, so we are not too bothered by this result because we understand, as I said, as a Test side what we’ve done over the last three, four years, not just over the last 18 months but over the last three, four years. So this is not a measure of who we are as a team and the ability and the potential we have had for so many years now,” he added.

The Indian players will now get a 20-day break from the bubble life in the UK. While the cricketers will disperse on June 24, they are set to return to the bubble for the five-Test series against England around July 14.

The news was made public by a joint official statement made by Emerging Media and former Goldman Sachs Partner Gerry Cardinale, who is the founder of RedBird Capital. The statement, however, did not disclose any financial details regarding the acquisition.

“The IPL is a dynamic league with a global audience and forward-thinking mindset regarding fan and player engagement,” Cardinale was quoted in the statement, which also revealed that Emerging Media has increased their majority stake in the franchise from 51% to 65%.

However, a report made by The Financial Times claims that the investment made by RedBird Capital is in the region of $37.5 million, which translated into the Royals being valued at $250 million.

Alongside picking up a minority stake in Fenway Sports Group, the owner of Liverpool and Red Sox and the XFL, RedBird Capital are also the majority owner of Ligue 1 football team Toulouse.

With three wins and four losses, Rajasthan Royals are currently placed in the fifth spot in the IPL 2021 Points Table, the 14th edition of the league which is currently met with a postponement since 14th May, as BCCI has planned to host the remaining matches of the tournament in the UAE in September and October this year.

Indian cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar talked about his former teammate Rahul Dravid and his new role as the coach for the team.

    Sachin Praises Rahul Dravid

A significant section of the Men in Blue will travel to Sri Lanka for limited-overs series in July with young players like Prithvi Shaw, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Devdutt Padikkal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Varun Chakravarthy, and Chetan Sakariya in the squad and under coach Rahul Dravid.

The team will be led by Shikhar Dhawan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been named the vice-captain. Dravid has played a key role in nurturing India’s young talent. As the head of NCA, Dravid has given several young talents to the Men in Blue.

“These players have spent enough time with Rahul, so they know him. A coach is someone who should keep a healthy atmosphere in the team and the dressing room, and Rahul will do that. At this level, unless there are weaknesses, you don’t need to coach the players. They all know how to hit a cover drive or bowl an outswinger. When somebody is struggling, that’s when someone of his experience will play a role. Otherwise, the team knows what they are supposed to do,” Tendulkar said in an interview with Times of India.

Earlier, Tendulkar also praised Jasprit Bumrah and said that his awkward bowling action makes it difficult for the batsman to play his ball.

“I was told that when a bowler is bowling well, stand at the non-striker’s end (laughs). Jokes apart, Bumrah is a world-class bowler, his action is slightly awkward, I have played him in the nets and his action is awkward. He is quicker than you think. He hits the bat hard so one can say because his action is odd, you get less time to react,” Tendulkar was quoted as saying to ANI.

South Africa’s wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock and New Zealand opener Devon Conway gave the maiden edition of The Hundred tournament some respite after they signed up for Southern Brave as replacements for Australians David Warner and Marcus Stoinis, who had pulled out due to bio-bubble life.

Quinton de Kock and Devon Conway roped in The Hundred

    The South Africa-born left-hander averages 75 in one-day internationals and 59 in Twenty20 internationals.

“I’m really excited to have joined Southern Brave,” Conway said. “I have really enjoyed my time playing in the UK so far, and I’m looking forward to getting stuck in with the team and taking part in the first season of the Hundred.”

    Devon Conway

De Kock, a dynamic wicketkeeper-batsman, has long been a multi-format star of the world game and will be reunited with coach Mahela Jayawardene, having worked with the Sri Lanka great at Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League.

“I’m also really excited to be working with Mahela again,” he said. “Hopefully we can have plenty of fans in to support us and we can give them something to cheer about.”

The Hundred is a pioneering 100 balls-per-side tournament, which is even shorter than a T20 match, featuring eight franchises, all fielding men’s and women’s teams.

The Hundred runs for a month and starts on July 21. While Conway is expected to be available throughout, de Kock is likely to miss at least the opening fixture due to South Africa’s T20I series in Ireland.

Andre Russell, the men’s team’s third overseas player, is set to miss a handful of games while on international duty and the Brave are looking for a short-term replacement.

However, due to Covid-19 and the bio-bubble life as a result of it, some top players have pulled out.

Apart from Warner — bought for 100,000 pounds — and Stoinis – for 80,000 pounds — South Africa pace bowler Kagiso Rabada is also expected to pull out of the event.

New Zealand woman cricketer Sophie Devine, too, has also pulled out of the tournament.

While there are no Indians in the men’s tournament, four Indian women — Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, and Deepti Sharma — have signed for the tournament.

WTC 2021 Finals: Sanjay Manjrekar Blames Gill for India’s Failure

    0
Sanjay Manjrekar criticised Shubman Gill`s footwork in the WTC21 finals against NZ

Former India cricketer-turned-commentator, Sanjay Manjrekar, criticized Shubman Gill`s footwork and blamed it for the young opener`s failure in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against New Zealand here.

    Sanjay Manjrekar slams Shubman Gill

Gill was caught by wicketkeeper BJ Watling for 28 in the first innings, while in the second innings he was out leg-before to Tim Southee for 8.

“He (Gill) will have to work on his footwork. It is something that is very obvious for everyone to see. He is getting out to the ball that is leaving and the ball that`s coming back in. It`s a problem, and like I mentioned in the first innings, it`s always the front foot,” said Manjrekar on espncricinfo.com.

“Right through this Test match, not once have I seen him (Gill) go back, so he is really focused on making sure he doesn`t get out to the ball that is pitched up. There was a lot of talk about his front pad not going far enough and getting caught on the crease in Australia.

Shubman Gill dismissed for 28 and 8 runs in the WTC 21 finals
Shubman Gill dismissed for 28 and 8 runs in the WTC 21 finals

So, he is working excessively on that and (on Tuesday) again he got caught up in making sure that the front pad is across. He left some balls beautifully but then the ball coming back in really surprised him,” added Manjrekar.

Manjrekar felt that not just Gill but stalwarts such as Cheteshwar Pujara and skipper Virat Kohli too were getting into the habit of going in with a “dogmatic approach“.

“It`s the kind of footwork that you see from batters when you are playing in say Australia on a pitch like Adelaide where the ball really starts shooting along the ground, keeps really low with the cracks and then all batters come with the pre-conceived notion that, come what may, you are going to get on to the front foot.

“So, then, it is understandable for all batters to come with this sort of a dogmatic approach, to get onto the front foot. But you see with (Cheteshwar) Pujara, you`re seeing that with Gill…Virat Kohli plays that as well; you know that`s his basic game. I`m a little sceptical whether that is the right way to go about…to be on the front foot all the time,” said Manjrekar.

In the inaugural WTC finals, New Zealand beat India by 8 wickets and lift the Maze trophy.

Former England skippers Michael Vaughan and Kevin Pietersen fumed at the reports. Vaughan went on to say that the Ashes series should be canceled if families are not allowed to stay with the players for the four-month-long tour of Australia due to strict COVID-19 protocols.

The Ashes series is a five-match test cricket series played between Australia and England. The series is played every two years, with the next series to be held in Australia beginning in December of 2021.

Many cricket fans were still not aware of the history Ashes winners list. For their convenience, TOS has listed the List of Ashes Series Winners, Man of Series, and Match Details Since 1882.

    Michael Vaughan Slams Ashes Plan

“Read reports today that England cricketers may not be able to have family members with them down under this winter .. Quite simply if they can’t they should call the Ashes off .. 4 months away from your family is totally unacceptable .. #Ashes,” Vaughan wrote on his Twitter handle.

    Kevin Pietersen Backs Players

Kevin Pietersen also responded to the media report and said that if any England player decides to back out from the iconic tour then they will have his full backing.

“Any ENG player that pulls out of this Ashes, if they seriously can’t see their families for FOUR MONTHS, has my full backing. Families are the most important part of a players makeup. And even more so in the current climate! FOUR MONTHS with no family on Ashes Tour?” he tweeted.

According to Cricket Australia, a solution can be worked out and the tournament is still many months away.

“It’s only June and England are not due to arrive until November,” a CA spokeswoman told the ‘Sydney Morning Herald’.

Lawson Naidoo was elected as the new Cricket South Africa (CSA) majority independent board chairperson on Tuesday. Steven Budlender SC was elected as the lead independent director when the new board met for its first meeting.

Lawson Naidoo Elected as New Chairperson

Naidoo and advocate Budlender were appointed as CSA directors at the organization’s AGM on June 12 in a historic event where the cricket body‚ under a minister-appointed interim board‚ fought tooth and nail to become the first sporting code in the country to have a majority independent board.

Naidoo‚ who is the executive secretary of the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution (Casac) and a founding partner of political risk consultancy the Paternoster Group‚ thanked his fellow directors for showing confidence in him.

“I thank my fellow Board members for the confidence they have shown in electing me as chairperson,” he commented.

“We are all well aware of the challenges facing us in making CSA a world-class sporting organisation both on and off the field of play‚” Naidoo was quoted as saying in a CSA statement.

The statement said the new CSA directors are committed to working together in the best interests of the game and the people of South Africa.

The new board said it would focus on their first 100 days in office on stabilizing CSA and embark on an engagement program to gain input from stakeholders as it seeks to align everyone towards a shared vision.

Naidoo and Budlender were appointed along with Norman Arendse SC‚ Andrew Hudson‚ Simo Lushaba‚ Andisa Ntsubane‚ Mark Rayner and Muditambi Ravele as the eight independent directors in the new-look‚ 15-man CSA board.

The five non-independent directors are Daniel Govender from KwaZulu-Natal‚ Limpopo’s John Mogodi‚ Mpumalanga’s Craig Nel‚ Tebogo Siko from Northerns and Simphiwe Ndzundzu from Border.

Acting CEO Pholetsi Moseki and acting CFO Christelle Janse van Rensburg will be incorporated as directors to complete the CSA board.

The last time CSA had a lead independent director was when Arendse occupied the position between 2013 and 2018. Budlender has now been entrusted with that responsibility.

Kevin Pietersen Slams Ashes Plan of Four-Month Tour Without Families

    0
    Kevin Pietersen
    Kevin Pietersen

Kevin Pietersen has branded the prospect of England’s cricketers not seeing their family for four months during this winter’s Ashes as “absolutely insane”, and said he would support anyone who pulled out of the tour.

    Kevin Pietersen Slams Ashes Plan

Those players involved in both the T20I and Test squads are facing the prospect of several months away from home at the end of the year, with an Ashes tour following the T20 World Cup.

Combined with Australia’s tough Covid-19 protocols, which render it almost impossible for casual visitors to travel to the country, it has raised the prospect of players either withdrawing from the series or England continuing the rest-and-rotation policy which has been utilized in recent months.

Responding to a Daily Mail article which outlined the issue, Pietersen wrote on Instagram: “Any England cricketer that pulls out of this winter’s Ashes trip will have my full support. To not see your family for four months is absolutely insane. Complete and utter madness!

“An Ashes tour is hard enough and to do it without your family for all or part of it, is just stupid.

    The Ashes Trophy
    The Ashes Trophy

“After the last 12 months or so, the players deserve their families whenever they want. And to those who say, ‘they get paid loads, so suck it up’, just be quiet. An Ashes tour is a tough tour. Players need all their comforts and be happy.

“I would 100% pull out if I couldn’t see my family for four months!”

Darren Gough, the former England fast bowler who has also worked as a consultant coach with the current team, replied with the comment: “Me 2 buddy”.

As things stand, the England squad is expected to leave for a limited-overs tour of Bangladesh on or around September 20.

While some players are likely to be rested for that trip – and the brief series in Pakistan which follows – the games will be used to fine-tune plans for the T20 World Cup which follows in October.

The Test squad – as well as Lions players and those involved in the Big Bash – are then expected in Australia in the second half of November before the Ashes starts on December 8. It is scheduled to finish about six weeks later in Perth.

It is understood that Cricket Australia are currently lobbying the Australian government on behalf of the ECB to allow a dispensation for families of the Ashes squad.

According to the report in the Daily Mail, the ECB are prepared to pay for a charter flight to ensure families are able to attend. But at this stage, there are no guarantees and a recent spike in cases in Sydney will do nothing to improve chances.

If there is no dispensation, it seems highly likely England will continue to rest and rotate their players. That has raised the real prospect that they will not field their strongest team at times during the Ashes series.

    Chris Silverwood
    Chris Silverwood

Chris Silverwood, England’s head coach, has previously confirmed he would be prepared to rest players from the series if the need for bio-bubbles was sustained.

Earlier in the week, Jos Buttler admitted there weren’t “any perfect answers” to the issues presented by England’s never-ending touring lifestyle in the time of Covid, but reiterated his support for the rest-and-rotation policy.

Pietersen, the former England captain, was a member of the 2013-14 Ashes squad and witnessed at first hand the burn-out of Jonathan Trott. He has long called for more sympathetic treatment of players.

WTC 2021 Finals: VVS Laxman Praises Kohli For Ross Taylor’s Wicket Planning

VVS Laxman has credited India captain Virat Kohli for the important wicket of Ross Taylor in the first session of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) between India and New Zealand on Day 5 on Tuesday.

    VVS Laxman Praises Kohli

This is something that even former India batsman VVS Laxman recognised and applauded, as he gave credit to skipper Kohli for making timely changes in the attack. While speaking to Star Sports during the lunch-break show, 46-year-old Laxman said Ross Taylor’s wicket was a result of fantastic captaincy.

    Virat Kohli
    Virat Kohli

“A lot of credit for Ross Taylor wicket should be given to Virat Kohli. Ross Taylor has the tendency to play in the air when he plays the drives and Shubman Gill was stationed there, just parallel to the crease, silly mid-off position and that’s the reason why he caught that blinder. Fantastic captaincy, a fantastic display of fast bowling,” remarked Laxman.

He added: “It took a while to take the wicket of Ross Taylor but right from the word go the intensity of the Indian fast bowlers, what we were expecting from Indian fast bowlers, that was to be seen. Fantastic display of fast bowling, control aggression, and a lot of discipline and also hats off to Virat Kohli,” VVS Laxman told Star Sports.

The first breakthrough of the day, after a first tough hour, came off Shami’s bowling when Taylor, on 11, was caught brilliantly by Shubman Gill at short cover. One usually brings two but on this occasion, it brought three as Ishant Sharma soon removed Henry Nicholls for 7 before Shami castled Black Caps’ wicketkeeper-batsman BJ Watling on 1.

Eventually, despite skipper Williamson’s toiling knock of 49 (177 balls), the Kiwis ended their first innings with a 32-run lead. At the end of the day’s play, India were 64/2, leading by 32 runs with Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara unbeaten.
