BCCI’s decision on IPL

The out break of corona virus made the whole world to pause their work. The spread of deadly corona virus is in a rapid rate. This deadly virus made the scheduled events to postpone. The cash-rich Indian Premier League too face the same. BCCI seeks every possible way to host the tournament in order to avoid the huge loss.

Finally BCCI comes up with a decision to host the tournament at the end of April or at the beginning of May. BCCI took this decision after having the conference call with the IPL owners on March 24.

The destructive batsman took to Instagram and shared a photo and reveals his favourite IPL moment

Warner tried Jadeja’s style

SunRisers Hyderabad captain David Warner, posted a hilarious video on his Instagram handle where he is seen emulating India and Chennai Super Kings all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja’s archetype “sword celebration“.

In the video posted by the Australian opening batsman, he is seen swinging a cricket bat for an advertisement campaign before IPL 2019.

“Throwback to this time last year to a commercial we were doing for @sunrisershyd Do you think I’ve got @royalnavghan covered for the sword??,” read Warner’s caption.

Warner, who had missed IPL 2018 as an aftermath of his involvement in the Cape Town Ball Tampering Scandal, top-scored upon comeback in IPL 2019. In 12 matches for SRH, the southpaw had amassed 692 runs at an average of 69.20 and a strike rate of 143.86 including one century and eight half-centuries.

It was in February this year that Warner was reinstated as the captain by SunRisers Hyderabad ahead of IPL 2020. While there were some doubts regarding Australian players’ participation in IPL 2020, Warner’s manager had made it clear that the cricketer would travel to India despite restrictions.

Warner, who had recently nominated India and Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli for shaving his head to show support for COVID-19 workers, receiving laughing emojis from Kohli on his video. Apart from Kohli, India and SRH wicket-keeper batsman Wriddhiman Saha also reacted on the post.

Kevin Pietersen scored fourth ODI century vs Australia during ICC Cricket World Cup 2007

On this day in 2007, former England batsman Kevin Pietersen had scored his fourth ODI century during the 35th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup against Australia in Antigua.

Pietersen, who amassed 558 runs in his first 11 ODIs at an average of 139.50 and a strike rate of 100.72 including three centuries and two half-centuries, reached the three-figure mark after more than two years in this format.

In the 36 ODIs that Pietersen played in between his third and fourth ODI century, he scored 1,251 runs at an average of 44.67 and a strike rate of 88.84 including 12 haf-centuries.

The right-hand batsman maintaining an ODI average of 56.53 despite not scoring a century for over two years speaks highly about him being the No. 1 ODI batsman at the time of the World Cup.

After the then England captain Michael Vaughan won the toss and opted to bat, Pietersen found himself in the middle in the seventh over as Vaughan (5) and Andrew Strauss (7) were dismissed cheaply by Australia fast bowler Shaun Tait.

England opening batsman Ian Bell (77) and Pietersen stitched a 140-run stand for the third wicket to lay a solid foundation for the remaining batsmen. However, losing wickets at regular intervals saw the English getting dismissed on 247 in 49.5 overs.

Pietersen, then 26, got his eye in before showing first signs of aggression against Australia’s part-time spinner in Michael Clarke.

Having completed a 49-ball half-century in the 23rd over, Pietersen reached the three-figure mark after 25 overs amidst wickets falling from the other end.

Pietersen’s 104 (122) with the help of six fours and a six ended up in a losing cause as Australia sealed the chase in the 48th over on the back of individual half-centuries from captain Ricky Ponting (86) and Clarke (55*).

What really happened when James Taylor was denied ODI century vs Australia in Cricket World Cup 2015?

During the second match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 between Australia and England in Melbourne, England batsman James Taylor was denied his maiden ODI century by the on-field umpires in Aleem Dar and Kumar Dharamasena.

Chasing a daunting 343-run target, England commenced their World Cup campaign in shambles as they lost half their side including captain Eoin Morgan (0) by the 18th over.

Coming in to bat at No. 6, Taylor shared a 92-run partnership for the seventh wicket alongside seamer Chris Woakes (37) to provide some respite and respect to the English innings. Having said that, the latter getting out to Australia fast bowler Mitchell Johnson in the 36th over snatched hopes (if any) from England.

Having batted for nearly 10 overs, Taylor hit his first boundary, although off a top-edge, against Australia pacer Josh Hazlewood. Australia opening batsman Aaron Finch dropped Taylor in Hazlewood’s next over to give the right-hand batsman an additional chance.

Taylor subsequently hit Australia’s part-time spinners in Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell for boundaries to reach in vicinity of his fifth ODI half-century. Another streaky shot on the first delivery of the 34th over off Australia all-rounder Mitchell Marsh saw Taylor completing his half-century.

Taylor hit Australia spearhead Mitchell Starc for a six down the ground in the following over to send some shivers down the fans’ spine. As Woakes got out in the next over, Taylor somehow managed to bat in the direction of his maiden ODI century.

James Taylor was denied ODI century

On the penultimate delivery of the 42nd over, Taylor missed a flick off Hazlewood and attempted to run for a single. With umpire Dar ruling an lbw appeal in the bowler’s favour, Taylor immediately opted for a review regarding a delivery which seemed to miss the leg-stump.

In the meanwhile, Maxwell’s attempt of a run-out at the striker’s end saw England’s James Anderson (8) short of his crease. Standing at square leg, Dharamasena raised his finger after watching multiple reviews.

Batting on 98* (90) in an innings which included 11 fours and two sixes, Taylor was seen pleading to the umpires with respect to the ball being declared “dead” after Dar ruled him out in the first place. As a result, the question of running out Anderson should have never arose.

The confusion resulted in the hosts’ favour as Anderson had to walk back to the pavilion as England’s last batsman. With Australia registering a 111-run victory in their World Cup opener, the last wicket’s decision was unlikely to affect the match but it sure denied Taylor of a century.

After the match got over, ICC (International Cricket Council) admitted that a mistake was made by the umpires on the last ball of the match.

“Following Australia’s 111-run win over England in the Group A ICC Cricket World Cup clash at Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday night, the Playing Control Team (PCT) met and reviewed the final ball of the game which resulted in James Anderson being given run out,” an ICC statement said.

“Article 3.6a of Appendix 6 of the Decision Review System Playing Conditions states that the ball should have been deemed dead when the batsman [James Taylor] was given out LBW. No further runs or dismissals were possible.

“The PCT spoke to the England team management and acknowledges that the game ended incorrectly and that an error was made,” read ICC’s statement.

“I honestly still don’t know the rule”

Finch, who was declared the ‘Man of the Match’ for scoring 135 (128) with the help of 12 fours three sixes in the first innings, opened up on being unaware about the rule and appealing for the run-out as in any other situation.

“We had no idea what was going on. We appealed for an lbw, we appealed for a run out. We would have taken anything at the time. I honestly still don’t know the rule. Maybe it was a dead ball, but I still haven’t seen a rule,” Finch was quoted as saying after the match.

Taylor, who was forced to retire from cricket following the diagnosis of a serious heart condition called arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) in 2016, played a total of seven Tests and 27 ODIs and eventually scored an ODI century against Australia at Old Trafford the same year. The 30-year old currently works as a selector for England’s senior cricket team.

The out break of corona virus made an huge impact globally. Where many peoples including leaders suffer from this deadly corona virus. In order to control the spread and to maintain the social distancing many government imposed lock down world wide.

The majority of the scheduled events including sports event has been called off globally. Cash rich Indian Premier League too face the same fate where BCCI postponed the IPL to the mid of April.

Earlier IPL franchises agreed to play the matches behind the closed door, but the Indian government visa ban, restricts the foreign players from involving in game.

Veteran Chennai Super Kings spinner Harbhajan Singh, who last played competitive cricket in IPL 2019, has admitted that he is missing playing matches for Super Kings the most. Chennai Super Kings close their practice camp in order to prevent players from getting infected.

“I miss matches the most, was hoping that I would get to play 17 matches [including finals] after a year’s gap. I miss our visits to the ground, the hordes of fans waiting to greet us, the bikes that used to ride along our bus and am sure that every fan is missing this as well. I hope that IPL happens soon, till then I will keep myself fit,” Harbhajan was quoted as saying during Star Sports Cricket Connected.

Harbhajan Singh ready to play IPL 2020 without spectators

On being recently asked about the revised starting date of IPL 2020, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly had pointed out “no change in the situation” as a reason behind him not being able to provide a concrete answer.

It is true that nothing confirmed can be said about IPL 2020 at the moment. However, one can also not rule out players playing behind closed doors if the tournament is to be conducted in the near future.

Harbhajan, 39, was ready to play the cash-rich league without spectators especially if there seems to be no other option. Having said that, the off-spinner also laid emphasis on being cautious about other factors concerning the players.

“Spectators are important, but if the situation arises, I don’t mind playing without them. Yes, as a player I won’t get the vibe, but this will ensure that every fan will get to watch IPL on their TV.

“We will have to be cautious about everything and should prioritise players’ safety by ensuring that the match venues, team hotels, flights are properly sanitized. A lot of lives are on line so we should organise IPL when everything is fine,” Harbhajan said.

“You need to have something extra. Virat had that,” : Dilip Vengsarkar

Dilip Vengsarkar backed a very raw Virat Kohli and promoted MS Dhoni to captaincy

He remains India’s best chairman of selectors by a distance for his sheer ability to spot talent and Dilip Vengsarkar always knew that Virat Kohli was “exceptional” when he first saw the Indian captain in age-group cricket. The former skipper’s tenure as chairman of the national selection committee between 2006-08 is often cited as a benchmark for all those who came after him as he backed a very raw Kohli and promoted Mahendra Singh Dhoni to captaincy.

“Selecting talent was my forte. I will tell you something. You might be good at spotting talent but what you do after spotting is very important. If someone is talented, you have to induct him and give him chances,” Vengsarkar, who turned 64 on Monday, told PTI in an exclusive interview.

Vengsarkar on MSD

Vengsarkar believes that he was able to do justice to the chairman’s post because of the time he spent as head of BCCI’s now-defunct Talent Research Development Wing (TRDW) which found the gem called Dhoni. When talking about Kohli, one could sense the pride in his voice as he was the one who picked the feisty batsman after an Emerging India team’s tour of Australia where the current captain was even ready to open the innings on the chairman’s call. The ‘Colonel’ liked his attitude.

“I have watched a lot of U-16 and U-19s as TRDW chairman and watched Virat a lot during his junior cricket days. So when I became chairman of the selection committee, we picked him for an Emerging Tour of Australia. I was there and when I saw him bat, I knew he is ready for big-time cricket,” Vengsarkar recalled.

So was he convinced that this is the guy who would play 15 years for India? Vengsarkar gave a different reply.

“You can never be sure whether someone will go on to play that long. What I saw was an exceptional talent and if you have an eye, you would know which players are more likely to succeed at the highest level.

“You need to have something extra. Virat had that,” the former India captain said.

“…every selector must have courage and conviction along with eye for talent. If you are convinced about someone, you have to back him to the hilt. That’s what good selectors do,” he said. Was there any pressure on him to not select Kohli, whose attitude then was questioned in all quarters?

“I don’t think anybody pressurised me. I was convinced that I had picked a guy who had exceptional talent at that point of time. I knew he was a tremendous player who needed backing.”

There is a funny story how Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who was 21 at that time, was inducted into the TRDW scheme despite the policy of having only U-19 players. It was on the insistence of former Bengal captain Prakash Poddar, who had gone to watch an U-19 match in Jamshedpur as part of Vengsarkar’s TRDW team.

TRDW scheme

The match was being held at a ground adjacent to the Keenan Stadium where Bihar (not Jharkhand) were playing a Ranji One Day game. A few balls flew into the playing arena outside the stadium which made Poddar curious and he went inquiring as to who was hitting it this far.

The name was MS Dhoni but he had already passed the qualifying age for TRDW. But Vengsarkar, on Poddar’s insistence, decided that rules shouldn’t come in the way of a talented player.

He has immense respect for the late Jagmohan Dalmiya, who started the TRDW scheme which became defunct after he lost the elections.

“Once Mr Dalmiya lost elections, they discontinued the TRDW thing. Extremely unfortunate as players who were spotted and sent to NCA became big stars.

“In fact, the players I selected then gave me an idea of bench strength when I became head of selection committee. That’s how useful TRDW was.”

Talk about NCA and Vengsarkar is not happy that from a Centre of Excellence, it has turned into a rehab facility for injured players.

“NCA at that point of time was doing well, now it has become a rehab centre. I loved my time as chairman of NCA because Mr Dalmiya gave me a free hand,” he said.

“All those players whom I spotted there grew in stature. That gives me immense pride and a sense of satisfaction.”

Latest News about IPL 2020: Rajasthan Royals’ Jos Buttler hopes IPL 2020 happens later in the year

Rajasthan Royals’ Jos Buttler hopes IPL 2020 happens later in the year

The 29-year-old England wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler played a key role in England’s thrilling defeat of New Zealand at Lord’s in July. Buttler broke the stumps to run out Martin Guptill and seal a super-over win over New Zealand as England won the men’s World Cup for the first time.

IPL update

The novel COVID-19 pandemic providing no respite has given rise to questions regarding the future of the 13th season of the Indian Premier League. Originally scheduled to commence on March 29, IPL 2020 was delayed in the wake of coronavirus scare.

On being recently asked about the revised starting date of the cash-rich league, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly had pointed out “no change in the situation” as a reason behind him not being able to provide a concrete answer.

Much like Ganguly, Rajasthan Royals wicket-keeper batsman Jos Buttler was also unsure of when IPL 2020 would begin for it commencing on April 15 seems nearly improbable.

“I don’t know anymore than you know about when it [IPL 2020] could be played. I think, at the moment, everything is so indefinite, isn’t it? No one quite knows how long this will last. Can’t say, at the moment, about when it could or could not happen,” Buttler was quoted as saying in a video posted by ESPNcricinfo.

Jos Buttler hopes IPL 2020 happens

As expected, the confusing situation has invited multiple reports which range from IPL 2020 expected to get canceled to it happening in September-October or October-November. With the October-November window currently with the ICC T20 World Cup, a report further indicates its postponement as well.

Labeling IPL 2020 as a “massive tournament” for cricket, Buttler voiced his opinion regarding the premier tournament finding a window later in the year even if it comes at a cost of not all overseas players being available.

“As per the stature of the tournament, it’s a massive massive tournament for everyone around the world. The revenue that’s involved in the IPL; it’s a very important competition to cricket. It’s a big shame that it’s not going ahead.

“I think it does have the weight to probably pushed into a schedule if it can allow it. Of course, that might mean that certain players are unavailable. They’ll have to work through as the situation unfolds,” Buttler said.

The former Indian skipper MS Dhoni was last seen in action against New Zealand in the ICC World Cup semifinal, a game India lost. He made himself unavailable for India’s international assignments post the WC exit and was eventually dropped from the BCCI’s list of centrally contracted players in January.

Dhoni’s future carrier depends on IPL 2020

As pointed out by BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and India head coach Ravi Shastri, “Dhoni’s international future depends on his performances in IPL 2020 which comes in to consider him in T20 World Cup planned later this year in Australia”.

BCCI postponed the Indian Premier League to avoid the spread of corona virus. Thus the tension arises among Dhoni’s fan as this IPL plays a crucial role in his future International cricket role.

Earlier former Indian cricketer Sehwag and Australian bowler Brad Hogg throws their view on Dhoni’s possible return to Indian squad for T20 world cup. Sunil Gavaskar too insist Dhoni to retire from the cricket.

On This Day: Sanath Jayasuriya Scored the then Fastest ODI Half-Century vs Pakistan in Singapore

Former Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya
Former Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya

Former Sri Lankan batsman Sanath Jayasuriya considered as one of the greatest batsmen of his era is well known for his powerful striking and match-winning all-round performances in ODI cricket. Jayasuriya is credited for having revolutionized one-day international cricket with his explosive batting with Romesh Kaluwitharana in 1996, which initiated the hard-hitting modern-day batting strategy of all nations.

Sanath Jayasuriya’s Carrier

Jayasuriya was an all-rounder, who had an international cricket career that spread over four decades. He is the only player to score over 12,000 runs and capture more than 300 wickets in One Day International cricket, and hence regarded as one of the best all-rounders in the history of limited-overs cricket.

He was named the Most Valuable Player of 1996 Cricket World Cup and Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack broke an age-old tradition by naming him one of Five Cricketers’ of the Year 1997 despite not playing the previous season in England. Jayasuriya was also the captain of the Sri Lankan cricket team from 1999 to 2003.

On this Day

On this day in 1996, Sanath Jayasuriya had become the quickest to score a half-century in ODIs. In what was Jayasuriya’s 12th ODI half-century, it had come off just 17 balls to provide Sri Lanka a rocketing start in a 216-run chase in the final of the Singer Cup.

Opening the batting with wicket-keeper batsman Romesh Kaluwitharana, the pair shared a quickfire 70-run opening partnership. Kaluwitharana, who got out to Pakistan pacer Aaqib Javed on the second delivery of the sixth over, didn’t contribute a single run in the partnership which speaks highly about the southpaw’s blitz at the top of the order.

Predominantly known for changing the ODI batting mindset against the new ball, Jayasuriya drove Pakistan fast bowler Waqar Younis for a boundary on the second ball of the innings to make his intentions clear.

Match winning performance

Jayasuriya, then 26, started hitting Younis and Javed to both sides of the ground leaving the Pakistani duo with minimal options against him. What followed was a flurry of fearless pulls, cuts and drives to boost the Sri Lankan innings.

Having completed the 50-run partnership in just 22 balls, Jayasuriya then brought up an individual record as he pulled Pakistani spinner Saqlain Mushtaq for a six to score a 17-ball half-century.

Despite Jayasuriya scoring 76 (28) with the help of eight fours and five sixes before getting out in the ninth over, Sri Lanka fared miserably in the chase as they were bundled out for 172 in 32.5 overs. With bowling figures of 7-0-46-3, Mushtaq was the pick of Pakistani bowlers.

Before Jayasuriya, the record for the quickest half-century was held by Australia’s Simon O’Donnell who had registered an 18-ball half-century against Sri Lanka in 1990.

Jayasuriya, who held the record for close to 19 years, saw former South Africa captain AB de Villiers going past him by scoring a 16-ball ODI half-century against West Indies in Johannesburg.

Post Retirement

He retired from Test cricket in December 2007 and from limited-overs cricket in June 2011. On 28 January 2013, Sri Lanka Cricket appointed him as the chairman of the cricket selection committee. Gavaskar opened up on an off-the-field habit of the 38-year old cricketer which speaks highly about his nature while involving with other individuals.

Gavaskar, 70, revealed how players of both teams travel in chartered flights during bilateral series in India. Regarding Dhoni, Gavaskar wrote how he prefers to sit with the TV crew in the economy class and offers his business class seat to some other player who needs it more than him.

Sunil Gavaskar reveals how MS Dhoni used to travel in economy class

“The Indian team has a lovely system of rewarding its players especially in home matches. As most Indian cricket followers know, during the Indian domestic international season, both teams travel in a special chartered flight from one venue to the next.

“The flight also carries the technical TV crew who have to rig the cables for the next game. There are limited seats in business class and the captains, coaches and managers of the teams get these. It is here that those Indian players, who have done well in their previous game, get to sit there as a reward rather than the economy class behind.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni hardly ever sat in business class on these flights even when he was the skipper as he would prefer to sit with the real champs of the TV coverage, the cameramen and the sound engineers,” Gavaskar wrote in his latest column.

Had it not been for the infamous COVID-19 pandemic, Gavaskar would have been commentating in the 13th season of the Indian Premier League which was scheduled to begin on March 29. Delayed till April 15 as of now, not much can be confirmed about the future of the cash-rich league due to not much change in the situation.

The Coronavirus pandemic and the ensuing lockdown left everyone valuing the importance of freedom. While people around the world are using this time productively by working from home, sports personalities cannot do exactly that. Here’s what they are up to…

Mike Hesson – Learning a new language

Former New Zealand coach Mike Hesson arrived in India earlier this month. However, he couldn’t return before the lockdown was announced. However, Hesson is making the most of his time in India.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore cricket director revealed he is currently trying to learn Hindi and Kanada at present. “I am only beginning to know a few languages. It takes a backseat when you’re completely immersed in life. I am going to improve myself and try to learn the local languages a little bit, “he said.

Cheteshwar Pujara – Spending Quality family time

India’s Test cricket specialist Cheteshwar Pujara too gave a snapshot of what exactly he is doing during the lockdown. The Indian batsman said in an interview that for half of his day, he takes care of his daughter while doing household chores. Pujara also spends time reading a book or watching television for the rest of the day.

“I like spending time with myself, reading a book or watching TV is something I would do when I’m alone. That said, I have a young daughter who is so energetic and wants to play all the time, so half my day goes into taking care of her. I’m also helping my wife Puja with the daily chores.”

Shikhar Dhawan – Learning Juggling

Who says cricketers cannot practice at home? Well, Shikhar Dhawan can! The opener posted a video that shows him doing catching practice-cum-juggling at home. Talk of productivity in work from home!

On Friday, Sachin Tendulkar donated ₹ 50 lakh to counter the COVID-19 pandemic which has claimed 17 Indian lives and caused global havoc.

To date, Tendulkar’s donation is the largest contribution among India’s leading athletes, some of whom have pledged their wages while some others have donated medical equipment to combat the dreaded epidemic, which has caused more than 24,000 deaths worldwide.

The Pathan brothers, Irfan and Yusuf— donated 4000 face masks to Baroda police and health department, among other prominent cricketers, while Mahendra Singh Dhoni contributed Rs 1 lakh through a Pune based NGO.

In solidarity of those impacted by the 21-day lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has pledged to donate rice worth ₹ 50 lakh to the vulnerable.

The name Sachin Tendulkar hardly needs an introduction. And when you hear the word ‘Century’, it is hardly anyone’s guess name comes to the mind first. Arguably the best batsman in the history of the game, Tendulkar has broken every possible record in hitting the triple-digit.

He has most centuries in Tests, ODIs and the joint-most centuries in the Cricket World Cup. And of course, the legendary cricketer has a total of 100 centuries in international cricket. (God help anyone trying to break that record!) Let us take a look at all Sachin Tendulkar centuries.

Master Blaster Test Century List

The Master Blaster started his career as a 16-year-old sensation against Pakistan in 1989. And he got his first century in his ninth Test, against England in Manchester – Start of an Era! First of many! With his 35th century, against Sri Lanka in 2005, Tendulkar broke Sunil Gavaskar’s record of most test centuries. His last century came against South Africa at Cape Town in 2011. Here is the list of all 51 centuries – Yes FIFTY-ONE!

ODI Centuries

Tendulkar made his ODI debut in the same tour of Pakistan in 1989. And although it took him a little while to get going in ODIs in terms of centuries, he ended up with 49 centuries. The legendary batsman scored his first ODI century against Australia in 1994.

His 46th ODI century, the inning of 200* against South Africa was the first instance of a batsman scoring an ODI double-century. Tendulkar’s century against Bangladesh in the 2012 Asia Cup ended the year-long wait of his 100th century! It also turned out to be the Master Blaster’s last career 100.
