Quinton de Kock was named as captain for the South Africa Test team for the 2020/21 season.

De Kock Appointed as South Africa Test Captain

De Kock was appointed as captain of the South African limited-overs teams last season. But at the time was ruled out as a possible Test captain by CSA’s director of cricket Graeme Smith.

South Africa are scheduled to play the three-Test series this season. Starting with two matches against Sri Lanka from 26 December. They will then play two Tests in Pakistan followed by a series against Australia for which no details have been finalised.

“We are satisfied, as the national selection panel, with the decision that we have made to ensure continuity within the team. While we work towards making the best decision for its future without the pressure of time constraints,” said Mpitsang.

“Quinton is happy to continue in the role for the next season and is comfortable with the balance of the workload and we back him fully as a captain.”

    Kagiso Rabada ruled out

Cricket South Africa named a 15-man squad for the series against Sri Lanka. It includes four uncapped players in batsmen Sarel Erwee, Keegan Petersen, and Kyle Verreynne and fast bowler Glenton Stuurman. All-rounder Wiaan Mulder returns after a lengthy injury lay-off.

Leading fast bowler Kagiso Rabada and Dwaine Pretorius was not considered for the first Test in Centurion because they are recovering from injuries but Mpitsang said both players would continue to be assessed and could possibly be fit in time for the second Test in Johannesburg, starting on 3 January.

De Kock has led South Africa in eight ODI and 11 T20 internationals. He has no experience of captaincy at the first-class level.

It had speculated that batsmen Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram were regarded as long-term captaincy prospects but that both needed to cement their places in the team.

The South African squad will assemble on 19 December.

Ireland have named a 16-man squad for their upcoming tour where they play back-to-back ODI series against Afghanistan and hosts UAE.

Ireland Squad for Afghanistan, UAE ODI Tour

These matches will be part of the ODI Super League and hence will be crucial for the scheme of things in the lead up to the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup in India.

They already have 10 points to their name after they beat England in the third and final match of the three-match ODI series held in August. The matches against Afghanistan will be part of the World Cup Super League.

Andrew Balbirnie (C), Mark Adair, Curtis Campher, David Delany, Gareth Delany, Josh Little, Andrew McBrine, Barry McCarthy, James McCollum, Kevin O’Brien, Neil Rock, Simi Singh, Paul Stirling, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, Craig Young.

Gary Wilson ruled out of the squad

Gary Wilson will too not join the squad for this tour in order to be at home for the birth of his second child, with Neil Rock coming in as wicket-keeping cover.

“Ordinarily, Wilson would likely have been able to re-join the squad after the birth. However, this is not possible under the COVID-19 protocols in place for the series without an extended period of self-isolation so it was agreed that this would rule him out on this occasion,” Cricket Ireland said in a statement.

This tour will also be the first since Stuart Barnes, the new assistant head coach and National bowling lead, joined the support staff.

The Ireland cricket team may have played just 12 international matches in 2020, however, head coach Graham Ford believes the squad can be pleased with the progress they have made despite the disrupted year.

“It goes without saying that 2020 has been a difficult year, but the lads have acquitted themselves well and can be proud of what they have managed to achieve,” Ford said in an official statement.

“We’ve beaten the T20 World Champions, the West Indies, in a T20I in the Caribbean, beaten Afghanistan for the first time in a T20I in the subcontinent, and beaten the current World Cup champions England in their own backyard – those wins have helped build self-belief within the players and have demonstrated the progress we are making as a squad,” he added.

Additionally, several players and support staff who are not on the tour will remain at home under COVID-19 safe conditions in case a substitute needs to be flown out to Abu Dhabi during the month.

Parthiv Patel Picks India’s Wicket-keeper for Australia Tests

Indian former cricketer Parthiv Patel picks Saha as the best wicket keeper for Australia vs India Test series. Since Dhoni’s retirement from international cricket, the race for his replacement gets intended.

KL Rahul satisfied the need and locks his position in limited over format as wicket keeper batsman. When it comes to test matches Saha and Pant are the names widely spoken for MSD’s replacement.

Parthiv Patel picks Saha as the best wicket-keeper batsman

Parthiv Patel, who announced his retirement on Wednesday, picked India’s first-choice wicket-keeper for the upcoming Test series against Australia.

    Wriddhiman Saha
    Wriddhiman Saha

Patel put his weight firmly behind Saha and termed him the best keeper of India.

“I still believe in Test matches, your best keeper should play like Wriddhiman Saha for India. Yes, the skills change as per formats but I believe now, you have to be equally good keeper and batsman to play for India,” Parthiv said.

Saha scored an unbeaten 54 in the first warm-up game against Australia A. His gritty knock helped India A salvage a draw from a tricky situation in the three-day affair.

If the first warm-up is anything to go by then it does like Saha will get the nod ahead of Pant, who did not feature in that practice game.

However, things could change quickly if India decides to field Pant in the second practice pink-ball practice game ahead of their first day-night Test on foreign soil in Adelaide.

Warner ruled out of 1st Test match

    David Warner
    David Warner

Australia’s aggressive opening batsman David Warner has ruled out of 1st Test against India. Owing to his groin injury happened in the second ODI match Warner has restricted to play in the first Test match.

In India’s tour of Australia, the hosts lift the trophy for ODI series by beating India in 2-1 format. India with T Natarajan and Hardik’s best performance lifts the trophy for T20I series by beating Australia in 2-1 format.

Both the team lock their horns to play 4 match test series from December 17, 2020. Indian skipper Virat Kohli has granted paternity leave after the completion 1st Test match.

Indian former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar claims Rohit Sharma should play the test series in Australia if he proves his fitness. Rohit is currently undergoing his rehabilitation from a hamstring injury at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

India will take on Australia in a four-match Test series starting December 17 in Adelaide.

“If he meets all the parameters; if he is fit then he should be there,” Tendulkar told news agency AFP. “Rohit is a special player and an experienced player. When a senior cricketer comes back in the team, it does have an impact.”

Rohit is expected to undergo a fitness test on Friday

Virat Kohli returns to India post the 1st Test

With India captain, Virat Kohli set to return home after the first Test to be with his pregnant wife, Rohit’s availability for the series gains more significance. Tendulkar admits that India will miss the absence of Kohli.

    Virat Kohli
    Virat Kohli

“When you lose an experienced player like this there is without any doubt a void,” Tendulkar said. “Some youngster is going to get a chance to play in his spot and that’s an opportunity for someone else.”

However, he refused to wade into the debate that Kohli should be unburdened with captaincy, at least in one format.

“Let’s understand, this is not about individuals. It is about our team and the best part about Indian cricket right now is there is bench strength,” the 47-year-old said.

It was under Kohli that India returned home from their previous Australia tour with a historic 2-1 win in the Test series. However, the hosts will present a much stronger challenge compared to the 2018-19 tour when they were without Steve Smith and David Warner.

    Sachin Praises Australia current squad

Tendulkar concurs that the current Australia squad is far better. “This is a far better squad compared to the earlier one. When a couple of your senior members are not there, suddenly that void is felt and that is what Australia felt,” he said.

What has worked for India in recent years is a world-class fast bowling attack comprising the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, and Umesh Yadav.

    bharat arun
Bharat arun with Ishant Sharma Shami and Bumrah

When asked if the current attack is the best in India’s Test history, Tendulkar replied, “Every era should be kept separate, I don’t like comparing.

He though added, “But I can say that it is a complete bowling attack. So it doesn’t matter what kind of surface you are playing on, you have got all sides covered. You have got bowlers who can swing the ball. When it comes to variations and awkwardness, that is also there. Someone hitting the deck hard is also there. We have got a wrist spinner, we have got finger spinners.”

Raina Confirms to Captain Uttar Pradesh in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021

    Suresh Raina
    Suresh Raina

Former India batsman Suresh Raina has confirmed that he will be making a return to competitive cricket in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021 with Uttar Pradesh. Raina announced his retirement from international cricket earlier in 2020.

Raina returns to play Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021

The left-handed batsman had missed the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 due to personal reasons but he confirmed to Dainik Jagran that he will be taking part in the domestic T20 tournament as he wants to win another title with the state of UP.

He further added that his focus would then shift to the 2021 edition of the IPL, which will be held in the early parts of next year.

Interestingly, Raina didn’t mention which side he would be playing for. The batsman has been a core part of the Chennai Super Kings since the inception of the league – save for a two-year period when he turned out for the now-defunct Gujarat Lions.

However, with a mega auction looming next year as well as the potential addition of at least one if not two new franchises to the tournament, it remains to be seen where one of the tournament’s most consistent performers turns up.

Raina, who was a part of the 2011 World Cup-winning side, has scored 5,615 runs in 226 ODIs and 1,605 runs in 78 T20Is. He has also played 19 Tests in which he has made 768 runs.

15 years of Raina in International cricket

Interestingly, Raina had celebrated completing 15 years in international cricket just days before announcing his retirement. “Thank you so much guys, really overwhelmed with your love & support. These 15 years have been the greatest moments, and you guys as my family members keep me motivated. Love & Peace,” he had said on Twitter.

The other notable aspect of Raina’s retirement was that the announcement came on the same day that former India skipper and CSK captain MS Dhoni confirmed his own retirement.

Raina took to Instagram to congratulate Dhoni and said that he too will no longer be available for international selection.

“It was nothing but lovely playing with you, @mahi7781. With my heart full of pride, I choose to join you in this journey. Thank you, India. Jai Hind,” he said along with a picture of him, Dhoni, and other Chennai Super Kings players.

A day later he confirmed the news again with a statement thanking everyone who helped him in his career.

“With a lot of mixed feelings I’m able to make this announcement of my retirement. From a very young age, I as a small boy had literally lived Cricket on every street, gali and nukkad of my small town before making it to the Indian team,” he said.

Virat Kohli Updates on Hardik Pandya’s Role in Test Match vs Australia

    Hardik Pandya

India captain Virat Kohli has said that Hardik Pandya needs to be bowling at full tilt if he has to be considered for the Test match against Australia. Playing purely as a batsman, Pandya was in devastating form in the white-ball leg of the series in Australia and was adjudged Player of the Series in T20Is.

But apart from a four-over spell in the second ODI in Sydney, Pandya — who is inching towards full fitness following back surgery last year — has not bowled all season.

    Hardik Pandya back Surgery

Considering his workload and the unforgiving international schedule ahead, Kohli is making sure that Pandya is not rushed to the bowling crease.

Virat Kohli on Hardik Pandya’s bowling in test vs Australia

“Test cricket is a very different challenge altogether and we need him to bowl. We’ve spoken to him about it. That’s when he becomes that one guy who brings a lot of balance.

If you’ve seen our cricket overseas as well, in South Africa and England, we were able to compete for longer periods through Test matches because of the fact that he brought a lot of balance in terms of his bowling.

We’ve communicated that to him,” Kohli said at a press conference after India’s 12-run loss to Australia in the third T20I.

Australia David Warner ruled out of 1st Test

    David Warner
    David Warner

Australia opener David Warner will miss the opening pink-ball Test against India beginning in Adelaide on December 17 due to a groin injury, which he had suffered in the second ODI in Sydney.

The injury had ruled the 34-year-old from the final ODI and the three-match T20I series as well. The team management is closely monitoring his status and it is hoped that he will return for the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne starting on December 26.

“I feel I have made great progress in a short amount of time and it’s best for me to stay here in Sydney to continue working on getting back to full fitness,” Warner told cricket.com.au.

“The injury feels a lot better, but I need to be able to satisfy in my own mind and to my team-mates that it is 100 percent ready for Test match conditions,” he added.

Will Pucovski Test Debut is in doubt

    Will Pucovski
    Will Pucovski

Warner’s unavailability will be a huge blow to the home team, and the news comes on the heels of young Test hopeful Will Pucovski getting hit on the helmet and displaying symptoms of a concussion during the three-day tour match between Australia A and India A. The knock on the head has put his Test debut in doubt.

In such a scenario, Queensland opener Joe Burns, who has endured a torrid time this summer averaging an abysmal 8.71 in long-form cricket, is poised to be penciled in as one of the openers for Adelaide, along with Victorian Marcus Harris.

    Cameron Green dragged in

Western Australian all-rounder Cameron Green has been included in the 12-man Australia A squad that will take on a full-strength Indian team in a pink-ball warm-up game that kicks off on Friday, giving him another opportunity to stake his claim for a Test debut in Adelaide.

The 21-year-old has been in great form this summer, and hit a century — 114 not out —- against India A in the three-day game earlier this week, intensifying the hype around him. Green is certain to play in the warm-up game, along with Burns, Sean Abbott, and Mitchell Swepson, who have also been included in the side led by Alex Carey.

Cricket South Africa announced the schedule for the Pakistan tour of South Africa to play 2 Test matches and 3 T20I matches in January 2021. The Proteas will travel to Pakistan for the first time since 2007.

They will go into a period of quarantine before commencing with training and inter-squad practice matches. South Africa will become the fourth country to tour Pakistan in the last 15 months after Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Zimbabwe.

The last time the two teams met in Pakistan was in 2007 when South Africa beat the hosts 1-0 in a two-match Test series.

    13 February 2nd T20I Lahore
    14 February 3rd T20I Lahore

CSA Director of Cricket, Graeme Smith

“It’s pleasing to see so many countries making a return to Pakistan – a proud, cricket-loving nation. Cricket South Africa is delighted to be counted among them. As someone who has toured the country on more than one occasion back in my playing days, I know how much passion the people of Pakistan have for the game as well as the love and support that the Proteas enjoy there as a team.

“I would like to thank the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the hospitality and transparency they showed our security contingent when they traveled over there a few weeks ago. The report on their findings and recommendations gives us confidence as an organization that all of our team’s security, playing, and accommodation needs will be met and that the wellbeing of the team will be the top priority. We look forward to embarking on this historical tour.”

PCB Director – International, Zakir Khan

“South Africa confirming a tour to Pakistan and playing matches at the three major centers is fabulous news for Pakistan cricket and its fans. South Africa is one of the most popular sides in Pakistan even though they last played here in 2007, but the fans have been following their performances closely and now look forward to welcoming them.

“Cricket South Africa and its players have a special bonding with Pakistan as a number of their star players visited Lahore with the ICC World XI in 2017 and have appeared in the HBL Pakistan Super League with Faf du Plessis being the latest addition after featuring in the playoffs in Karachi.

“2021 promises to be a bumper and most exciting year for Pakistan cricket fans after a very long time. After South Africa, we are scheduled to host New Zealand, England and the West Indies, while our away series are against South Africa, Zimbabwe, England, Afghanistan, and the West Indies.

Zakir Khan on Asia and Men’s T20 WC

“If these high-profile and exciting series are topped up with the Asia Cup 2021 and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021, Pakistan cricket fans can brace themselves for an exciting and action-packed year.

“The home series against South Africa will complete the process for full resumption and restoration of international cricket in Pakistan, which started in 2015. However, the process got the real shot in the arm in the 2019-2020 season when Pakistan hosted Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Marylebone Cricket Club as well as the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020.

“2020 has been a challenging year for the world sport, but the PCB has approached the season proactively and strategically while looking at the future. Consequently, we have been able to successfully deliver nearly 60 percent of matches in the 2020-21 season, including an international series against Zimbabwe, who returned home extremely happy and satisfied with the operational and logistical arrangements we had put in place.

“As has been the case in the ongoing season, we will leave no stone unturned in the health and safety of South Africa and Pakistan sides so that players from both sides can play their best cricket in the Test and T20I series, and entertain the fans across the globe with their skills.”

Former India Cricketer Kiran More Claims Indian Spinners Struggles Without Dhoni

    0
    Kiran More Dhoni
    Kiran More Dhoni

Kiran More feels one of the main reasons behind Indian spinners’ ineffectiveness barring the first T20I vs Australia has been the absence of MS Dhoni behind the stumps. Former India wicketkeeper More said Dhoni’s constant guidance from behind the stumps helped the likes of Kuldeep, Chahal, and Jadeja a great deal.

Adam Zampa, Ashton Agar, Mitchell Swepson, and Glenn Maxwell have outperformed Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Washington Sundar in the limited-overs leg of India’s tour of Australia.

Kiran More on missing Dhoni in Australia tour

‘‘During Dhoni’s time, he was constantly giving advice to bowlers on what length or line to bowl – albeit mostly in Hindi. Now that Dhoni is not there behind the wickets, India’s spinners are struggling – you will see Kuldeep (Yadav) or (Ravindra) Jadeja are no longer the same bowlers,” More told former India batsman WV Raman in the latter’s podcast ‘Inside Out’.

    Dhoni
    Dhoni

“He has done it for 10-12 years with aplomb as Virat Kohli could afford to stand in the deep, but now he has to either stand at short extra cover or mid-off to talk to the bowlers.’

Dhoni announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket in August this year. KL Rahul has been keeping wickets for India in the limited-overs series. More said a lot of teams are now appointing their keeper-batsmen as the captain after seeing the success of Dhoni.

“It will be very difficult to find another Dhoni. If you see so many countries like Pakistan, England or South Africa trying with a wicketkeeper-batsman as captain, it’s because they have seen the benefit of having someone like him behind the stumps to read the game from the best position in the ground,” he said.

The injury feels a lot better, but I need to be able to satisfy in my own mind and to my team-mates that it is 100 percent ready for Test match conditions,” said Warner in an official release.

“That includes running between the wickets and being agile in the field. Right now I feel I am short of being able to play at peak fitness and another 10 days will make a difference,” he added.

Australian men’s head coach Justin Langer said Warner’s supreme fitness levels gave the side great confidence he may be fully fit for the second Test, set to commence on December 26 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

“If there is one guy you know will go well above and beyond that’s Dave. He has done an incredible job to get to where he is today. We hope to have a fully fit David Warner at his absolute best in Melbourne,” said Langer.
