Jaydev Unadkat leads Saurashtra at Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

The Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) on Friday announced the squad through a media release after its senior selection committee held an online meeting.

All the regulars — Prerak Mankad, Chirag Jani, left-handed batsman Arpit Vasavada, wicket-keeper-batsman Harvik Desai — have been named in the squad.

The bowling attack, to be led by Unadkat, also has left-arm pacer Chetan Sakariya and slow-left arm orthodox bowler Dharmendrasinh Jadeja.

The tournament begins from January 10. Saurashtra is placed in Elite Group D along with Services, Vidarbha, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The league matches will be played at Indore.

Murali Vijay Pulls out Tamilnadu team

The former India opener Murali Vijay pulls out of the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and will miss the entire domestic season.

“He informed us that he would be skipping the upcoming season for personal reasons. He did not mention anything further,” a TNCA official told.

Vijay last played for Tamil Nadu during their Ranji Trophy clash against Karnataka at Dindigul in 2019. Murali had featured in three matches for the Chennai Super Kings during the IPL-13.

Vijay was earlier named in the state probables for the domestic T20 competition. TNCA has included opener L Suryapprakash in place of Vijay.

“It is a very big blow for us ahead of the season because he is an experienced campaigner and brings solidity at the top.

But his absence gives other players an opportunity to make an impact for the stateside,” said the official.

Former India captain MS Dhoni will not be coming out of retirement to play the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Jharkhand next year.

Dhoni rejects Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket on August 15 this year and played in the Indian Premier League for the Chennai Super Kings. But he will not be doing that for his state team to play in the domestic T20 tournament which will start from January 10 in 2021.

Dhoni though will continue to play in the IPL which he announced himself before CSK’s final game of the season last month.

Dhoni continues to play for CSK in IPL 2021

Former New Zealand cricketer and commentator Danny Morrison had asked Dhoni whether he would be donning the yellow jersey again or not before their final match. The skipper nonchalantly responded to the question and said ‘definitely not’ when asked if this was his last game for the franchise.

    MS Dhoni
    MS Dhoni

CSK was knocked out in the league stage this year after enduring their worst season in the IPL, which saw them finish 7th with just 6 wins from 14 games.

Dhoni was in fact keen to play the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament earlier this year to prepare for IPL 2020. But the Indian domestic season 2020-21 was postponed indefinitely in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The much-delayed tournament will now kick start the Indian domestic season and will be played from January 10 to 31 in six different states where bio-secure hubs will be created.

Raina confirmed to play in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

Former India cricketer Suresh Raina meanwhile, announced on social media last week that he will be representing Uttar Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament. Raina had retired on the same day as Dhoni. But he missed playing in the IPL for CSK due to “personal reasons”.

Raina hasn’t played competitive cricket for the past one year. And he has been training hard in the gym and keeping himself fit for the upcoming domestic season in India.

Australian head coach Justin Langer dodged a bullet during a press conference on Thursday when asked about criticism over Ravi Shastri. He said that it was none of his business while saying he is glad if India are feeling any stress.

Justin Langer Reply for criticism over Ravi Shastri

A lot of criticism has come on Shastri’s way following India’s eight-wicket defeat to Australia wherein India were bundled out for 36 in the second innings.

“None of my business. I have had enough with stress. I empathize with the opposition and I know what it feels like. If India are feeling any stress, I am glad they are and not us over the Christmas weekend,” Justin Langer said in a virtual media press conference.

Langer further said that he has enormous faith in Australia’s Test captain Tim Paine and in his leadership qualities.

“You think about Adam Gilchrist, I guess, who transformed the game in a sense, and that is why Adam Gilchrist is an all-time great player because he transformed the game. I have got enormous faith in Tim Paine,” Langer said.

“…whether it’s his wicket-keeping, his captaincy, his batting, I have said publicly and privately for almost the last year, he is our most important player, because he is a lead wicket-keeper, his leadership on and off the field is incredible,” he said.

“….we saw he can play, how well he batted in first innings under pressure in Adelaide, probably changed the game actually with the run-out of Virat Kohli, so he is a great player, a great leader and I literally love having him in our team,” he said.

Australia would be looking to carry the winning momentum and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the four-Test series despite suffering a massive blow in which key opener David Warner was ruled out of the Boxing Day Test versus India, scheduled to start from December 26 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Gavaskar Slams BCCI For Not Allowing Natarajan Home While Giving Kohli Paternity Leave

The batting legend Sunil Gavaskar expressed his displeasure over T Natarajan not being given the permission to return home and see his newborn daughter while captain Virat Kohli getting a paternity leave.

    Gavaskar slams BCCI

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has ripped into the team management over ‘double standards’ when it comes to the treatment of players. Gavaskar slams BCCI for not allowing T Natarajan to return home post his service while Virat Kohli alone return home for the birth of his first child.

Natarajan was blessed with his first child while he was busy playing the IPL 2020 in the UAE. From there, he went to Australia straightaway after receiving his maiden call-up.

    T Natarajan
    T Natarajan

Initially, he was picked only as a net bowler but was later added to the ODI and the T20I squads due to injury to other players. He made his ODI as well as T20Is debuts in Australia and made a big impression.

“(T Natarajan) had become a father for the first time even as the IPL playoffs were going on. He was asked to stay on for the (Australia) Test series but not as a part of the team but as a net bowler. Imagine that. A match winner, albeit in another format, being asked to be a net bowler,” Sunil Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.

    Natarajan continuous as Net bowler

After the conclusion of the T20Is, he was asked to stay back and provide his services as a net bowler, much to the surprise of Sunil Gavaskar.

The former cricketer-turned-commentator was baffled with Natarajan not getting permission to meet his daughter while Kohli getting a paternity leave despite being a part of the Test side.

Expressing his disappointment over it, Sunil Gavaskar emphasised that there needs to be the same set of rules for every single player.

“He will thus return home only after the series ends in the third week of January and get to see his daughter for the first time then. And there is the captain (Virat Kohli) going back after the first Test for the birth of his first child. That’s Indian cricket. Different rules for different people, “ Sunil Gavaskar added.

Reason for Raina’s withdrawal from IPL 2020

Richard Hadlee Hails Hazlewood as Simply Devastating

    Richard Hadlee
    Richard Hadlee

New Zealand legendary bowler Richard Hadlee appreciates Hazlewood as the complete bowler. Hazlewood bags the victory for Aussies with his 5 wicket haul in the 1st test against India.

Richard Hadlee’s eyes swept around the charming Hagley Oval where New Zealand was gradually asserting itself over India in the second Test earlier this year.

The Kiwi pace bowling legend was following the action from his seat in the pavilion, his gaze picking out little, not-so-obvious elements from the middle.

    Surprise pick

And his mind was ticking too. He had been posed a question by the Hindu, on who he thought was the finest contemporary paceman.

Hadlee’s reply was as straight as his bowling was. And his pick-Josh Hazlewood – could have surprised many.

After all, there were more high-profile names around.

The great Hadlee’s reasoning was simple. “I love his simplicity,” he said. Hadlee observerd: “He is tall, runs in straight, good action and hits the stumps. Line and length, good place,  good variations.”

The Kiwi legend added, “He makes the batsman play, he is on or around the off-stump, and moves it both ways.”

The attributes Hadlee mentioned sounded simple but required a vital quality-control. To attain this, Hazlewood must have toiled countless hours at the nets.

On the third day of the first Test, when he blew away much of the Indian bating with a stunning five for eight, all these elements were on view.

He attained accuracy from his first delivery. He ran in smoothly, delivered from slightly wide of the stumps, hit the good length area on the off-stump – this meant the batsman had to play the delivery – and got the ball to straighten or move slightly away.

His height and high –arm action fetched bounce, even from the good length area. And the edges flew thick and fast.

The Indian batsmen, lacking footwork, were in two minds – whether to play forward or back. By then, the pacey deliveries had found the nick.

Richard Hadlee claims Hazlewood as Complete bowler

    Hazlewood
    Hazlewood

The 29-year-old Hazlewood is a complete bowler; he swings and seams it both ways, has accuracy and speed, and can hustle batsmen with short-pitched stuff.

Not surprisingly snother an who keeps it simple, the formidable former Aussie pace predator Glenn McGrath said: “Hazlewood reminds me of myself. He bowls a mean off-stump line, doesn’t give away anything, builds pressure, can bowl in partnerships,”

Hazlewood keeps it simple with laser-guided precision. And the results are devastating.

Brad Hodge Claims Rahane as Mirror Image of Rahul Dravid

Brad Hodge claims that Ajinkya Rahane is ‘the mirror image’ of legendary batsman Rahul Dravid. Rahane is set to lead Virat Kohli‘s role in the remaining test matches against Australia.

India has scheduled to play 4 match test series against Australia where the hosts lead the series by 1-0. Where India loses the first test match against Australia by 8 wickets. Post the 1st Test match Indian skipper Virat Kohli left Australia to be with his wife for their first baby birth.

    Brad Hodge Praises Rahane

In his absence, Ajinkya Rahane has given the power to lead India against Australia for the remaining test matches. Regarding this former Australia cricketer Brad Hodge claims that Rahane is ‘the mirror image’ of legendary batsman Rahul Dravid.

    Rahul Dravid
    Rahul Dravid

“He (Rahane) is very true, very loyal, very honest, a nice guy to spend some time around, and is very much and I don’t know whether this is coincidence or not the mirror image of Rahul Dravid,” Hodge was quoted as saying by Sydney Morning Herald. “Both have got great qualities, they are happy to communicate with everyone, spend time with all different walks of life. He is well balanced, not ego-centric, and loves cricket.”

“Long before that, what I knew of him as he was a very gentle individual anyway. Just well-mannered, kind, well-spoken, just a nice person to spend time with. He has good credentials to skipper a team, for sure,” he added.

It was under Kohli that India won their first-ever Test series on Australian soil in 2018-19 and while his absence will be felt, Rahane isn’t someone who is new to captaincy.

In fact, he has led India twice before in Test cricket – in 2017 against Australia in Dharamshala and in 2018 against Afghanistan in Bangalore. He led them to victory on both occasions. The second Test will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from December 26.
