ECB Suggest England Players to Take Anti-Racism Courses

England cricketers – both men and women – will undergo anti-racism training courses this year after a survey revealed that more than one-third of black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) players have faced prejudice in the game.

England Cricketers will undergo Anti Racism Courses

In the survey, done by the Professional Cricketers’ Association, 45 percent of more than 600 respondents claimed that racism had come from a fellow player, 10 percent said it was from a coach, and around 30 percent had experienced it on social media or from fans.

About 62 percent of the surveyed players agreed with the suggestion, while 70 percent believed specific education on racism and diversity would help improve the situation.

“Only 173 of professional players replied to the survey which the PCA believes shows the level of work they still have to undertake to ensure cricketers realise the importance of anti-racism education,” the report added.

Twelve of the 24 black and minority ethnic players to respond to the survey – of which 12 are current professionals, the other 12 are made up of past and academy players – said they had experienced racist abuse, something the PCA says equates to 38% of BAME members.

In the survey, which was sent to 600 current and former professionals, but received only 173 responses, 11 players who identified as white or caucasian also said they had experienced racism.

“It would have been far better if the vast majority of players had responded. Why they didn’t is very difficult to speculate,” said Charlie Mulraine, the PCA’s lead personal development manager.

“Sometimes there is nervousness talking about these issues and some are uncomfortable to express how they feel.”

    ECB introduces anonymous phone line

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will introduce an anonymous phone line to report racism, issue guidance on how people can be held to account for breaches and a forum for sharing experiences of racism, the report added.

“We needed to start somewhere. This gives us a clear direction of travel and it is an ambition to increase engagement with our members on this issue,” said Rob Lynch, the PCA’s chief executive.

“The option to do nothing was not there so the fact it has led us in this direction is a positive for the game.”

Rory Burns Names Jasprit Bumrah as the Difficult Bowler to Face in India Tour

England opener Rory Burns has conceded that Jasprit Bumrah is a difficult bowler to prepare for in the upcoming India vs England series.

    Rory Burns praises Bumrah

Bumrah, who has been named in the 18-man squad for the England Tests, is likely to get his first opportunity at home in Chennai after having missed India’s historic win at the Gabba, Brisbane against Australia earlier this month.

“He’s quite a hard man to prepare for, isn’t he? He’s obviously unique in terms of how he comes and bowls. We’ll just be working on those angles, try to work our way on seam and swing and those sort of things and try to replicate that as best as we can,” Burns told the press on Thursday.

“Homework? No, I have watched the India-Australia series, saw the most recent. No, I have played with a few other guys before, not in that respect, but I have played with them,” he added.

    Burns backs Leach and Bess

Meanwhile, Burns warned against putting too much pressure on England’s spin duo of Dom Bess and Jack Leach, saying they will be able to adapt to the conditions in India after a successful stint in Sri Lanka.

Bess and Leach picked up 22 wickets between them in a 2-Test series in Sri Lanka earlier this month as England went on to clean sweep the hosts 2-0. However, Burns feels the surfaces in India might be different from the ones that were on offer in Sri Lanka and it’s important that the two spinners are allowed to get into their grooves.

“Honestly, I don’t think you need to put too much expectation on them. They will go about their business and they have bowled in Sri Lanka to get into the groove which is important and its about switching their skills onto Indian surfaces,” Burns said.

“I think they have both been here before on different tours with the Indian Lions, so they have experience of playing here,” Burns said during a virtual media conference on Thursday.

“But you don’t want to put too much expectation on them without knowing about the surfaces going to be and with Indian seam attack, it might be slightly seamer-friendly, there is a Day/Night Test, so yeah it could be a bit different,” he added.

Burns missed the 2-Test series against Sri Lanka due to paternity leave and he will be raring to get an opportunity in the much-anticipated Tests in India.

Indian Wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant asked suggestions to buy a new house after returning from the Australia tour. Pant, who was India`s highest run-scorer in their 2-1 Test series win over Australia, said that his family has been urging him to buy a new house ever since he returned to India.

Rishabh Pant Ask suggestion to buy a new house

“Jabse Australia se aaya hoon gharwale peeche pade hain ki naya ghar le lo ab. Gurgaon sahi rahega? Aur koi option hai toh batao. (Family has been urging me to buy a new house since I returned from Australia. Would Gurgaon be fine? Tell me if there are any other options)” he said in his tweet.

Former Indian bowler Irfan Pathan made a cheeky reply to Rishabh Pant’s post. Pathan wrote” How about buying a cricket ground ??”

Uttarakhand Police suggest him a better place to move

Official Twitter handle of Uttarakhand Police also made a reply in which they suggest Pant to move to his home town Uttarakhand. They wrote as” भाई अपने उत्तराखंड आओ। जगह भी सबकी पसंदीदा है और यहाँ की पुलिस भी दिलदार है। घर भी और घर के बाहर सुरक्षा भी। आओ अपने प्रदेश पंत जी”(Brother come to your Uttarakhand. The place is also a favorite of all and the police here is also hearty. Home as well as outdoor security. Come, your region, Pant).

Pant scored 274 runs in five innings, including an unbeaten 89 in the fourth Test at the Gabba in Brisbane in which he led India`s chase of a target of 328 runs on the final day.

India won the match by three wickets, thus becoming the first team in 32 years to beat Australia at the Gabba in a Test match. It also helped seal a second consecutive 2-1 Test series win for India in Australia.

Pant also scored 97 in the third Test in Sydney which helped India seal an unlikely draw and kept the series level at 1-1 going into the final Test.

Bharat Arun Reveals the Reactions of Ravi Shastri When India Bowls

Indian team bowling coach Bharat Arun reveals the exact reaction of head coach Ravi Shastri and the scenario of the dressing room when Team India is on the field.

Bharat Arun on the reaction of Ravi Shastri

Bharat Arun reveals that Shastri shouts at him as well when someone on the field gives an easy boundary to the opposition batsmen. Notably, Ravi Shastri had called Bharat Arun months before the Australia tour and communicated his plan to dry up runs for the Australians.

“He will follow the match from the dressing room. But he absolutely hates it when a bowler concedes a boundary. He doesn’t want bowlers to concede a run.

“That’s what he wants. When we bowl, we should keep on taking wickets. And when they are bowling, we should keep on scoring runs. If someone concedes two boundaries, he will shout. If someone concedes a boundary, I know that I am going to be shouted at,” Bharat Arun said on Ashwin’s YouTube channel.

On the difference between the captaincy of Kohli and Rahane

Further, Bharat Arun also talked about the difference in captaincy style of Virat Kohli and his deputy Ajinkya Rahane under whom India won the Test series in Australia. Arun said that Rahane is calm and that is why the bowlers are not scared even after making mistakes. However, with Kohli, it’s the complete opposite.

According to Bharat Arun bowlers might think Kohli could get angry after two bad balls but in reality that is just his on-field energy.

“When it comes to Ajinkya, he is a calm person. Rahane might look calm from the outside but there is a steely nerve in him.

“He backs players and looks calm and even if a bowler goes wrong, he might not be scared of the captain. He knows that he will be backed.

“With Virat Kohli, if you bowl two bad balls, it might look like he will get angry, but that’s just his energy. Ajinkya brings the calmness, of course, even if he buys-in the plan, he makes sure he executes it to perfection,” Bharat Arun said.

Vikram Rathour Reveals the Reason Behind Promotion of Pant in Batting Order

The Indian cricket team batting coach Vikram Rathour reveals the reason for the early entry of Rishabh Pant in the Australia Test. In a video chat with Ashwin, Rathour points out that the idea literally came from Indian skipper Virat Kohli.

Vikram Rathour Reveals the Reason for the early entry of Rishabh Pant

The promotion did the trick as Pant went on to score 97 runs to take the match closer than anyone expected.

The match ended in a draw but India’s strategy had worked. Pant was promoted again during the final day of the Gabba Test and his gritty knock of 89 runs helped India seal a historic win in Brisbane. However, the Indian batting coach revealed that it was Virat Kohli’s idea to promote Pant up in the batting order.

While speaking to Indian off-spinner R Ashwin in a video on his Youtube channel, Rathour said

“It came from Virat to be honest. He said, ‘in case we play both left-handers, it will be a good idea if we can send Pant at No. 5 so that we can have a left-right combination. We discussed it with Ajinkya also. Then during the match, in the first innings, we decided to let him go at No.6.”

Rathour further revealed why they decided to send him at no. 5 in the 2nd innings at SCG. “Irrespective of when we lose wickets, this is the last innings, and we were going for the runs. The intent was not to draw the Test. Till we can, we were going to go for the win. That was the right time to send him in,” Rathour added.

“Ravi Shastri is a great believer of left-right combination and thought for a long time that Australians don’t bowl that well to the left-handers. And Ajinkya agreed to send him at No.5.”

Rathour further revealed that there were even discussions to send Pant at no. 4 if they got a good start.

“I was telling Ajinkya if we get a good start we can send him at No. 4 in the first innings but that didn’t happen,” Rathour added.

The Kerala High Court on Wednesday issued notices to Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli and two other celebrities in connection with a petition seeking a ban on online rummy games.

Kerala HC Notices Virat Kohli for endorsing Online Rummy

Besides Kohli, a division bench, headed by Chief Justice S Manikumar, also issued notices to Malayalam actor Aju Varghese and South Indian actress Tamanna Bhatia.

The petition by Kochi-based Pauly Vadakkan argues that online rummy games are against the law and difficult to control. It says certain platforms running such games are using celebrities to endorse them in a bid to attract the youth and trap them financially.

    Case filed by Pauly Vadakkan

Petitioner Pauly Vadakkan alleged online gambling is now a growing menace in the state and the primary targets will be middle to low-income group people who will be enticed to make easy money.

People who fall to the fraud platforms often use what is left in their life savings, he said.

The petitioner said there have been many reported cases across the state in which people have got scammed.

Referring to the recent alleged death by suicide of a 28-year-old man, an ISRO employee hailing from Kattakkada in Thiruvananthapuram district, the petitioner said the man had fallen into the trap of online rummy game and pushed himself to debt of Rs 21 lakh.

Finding no means to repay the debt, he took his life, the petitioner alleged.

In Andhra Pradesh, an ordinance has been promulgated to bring online gambling activities within the purview of the existing gaming legislation, the petitioner said.

The court sent notices to Play Games 24*7 and Mobile Premier League which purportedly run rummy games. Kohli is the brand ambassador of the Mobile Premier League and Tamannaah has acted in an advertisement. Malayalam actor Varghese has endorsed the rummy circle.

Former Indian Cricketer Irfan Pathan Praises Left Arm Pacer T Natarajan

Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan heap praises on T Natarajan for his impressive Test debut vs Australia. Natrajan travels as a net bowler and dragged into the Test squad as a replacement for injured Indian bowlers.

    Irfan Pathan Praises T Natarajan

Irfan Pathan also harped on the importance of having a left-armer in the side. “I always say that left is right. A left-arm bowler is an added advantage for any team as he brings variation in your attack creating a different angle for the batsmen,” Pathan said during his visit to the city to play an exhibition match at the CC&FC ground on Tuesday.

From a net bowler to making Test debut against Australia in the same series, it had been a dream run for Natarajan so far. But Pathan felt the Salem boy still has miles to go. “He has to do a lot in Tests, work on his angle and rhythm,” he pointed out. But Pathan is hopeful that the 29-year-old will be able to keep going.

    T Natarajan
    T Natarajan

“The good thing about him is that he has got repetitive action. But he will need to bring his body more behind his delivery at the time of release as that will help him bring the ball into a batsman,” Pathan pointed out.

The former India left-arm pacer, who made his Test debut at Adelaide in 2003, felt Natarajan should not try to hurry things up.

“His initial aim should now be on playing for the country for the next five-seven years and for that he must focus on his fitness. He should continue doing what he has in his armor and slowly learn more while playing. I am sure the team management will also work with him to make him a better product,” he stated.

The ex-India all-rounder looks ahead to the upcoming England series with keen interest. “The England series is also going to be an exciting one. They have a quality attack and if all the English pacers like Jofra Archer, James Anderson, Stuart Broad and others remain fit for the whole series, it will be a good challenge between the bat and the ball,” he concluded.

England cricketer Tom Banton is on the verge of skipping IPL 2021 Auction to focus on domestic red-ball cricket.

    Tom Banton Skips IPL 2021

The wicket-keeper batsman was bought by the KKR for Rs 1 crore at the players’ auction last December. The 22-year-old, who played just two matches for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the two-month-long IPL last year, said he wants to play cricket and not warm the bench.

“Growing up as a kid the IPL was a tournament that I absolutely loved watching. But I feel like I’m at a stage now where I need to be playing cricket instead of sitting on the bench,” he was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

“The last year has taught me quite a bit, obviously all these tournaments are great but a lot of them I’ve been sat on the sidelines and not really doing a huge amount. I miss batting and playing cricket if I’m being honest,” he added.

Banton, who scored just 18 runs in his two innings for KKR, was one of the six players to be released by the franchise ahead of the auction for the 2021 edition.

“I feel at this point in my career it’s probably best if I play a few red-ball games for Somerset and get back into that because I do miss playing red-ball cricket and my ambition is still to play Test cricket,” he said.

“We’ll have to wait and see. I still haven’t decided yet, but I’m just going to speak to a few people and try to decide from there.”

English batsman Tom Banton has been released from the Brisbane Heat’s squad for BBL 10 after pulling out due to bubble fatigue. Banton was a revelation for the Heat during last season’s competition, hitting three 50’s in seven games as he scored 223 runs at a strike rate of 176.98.

This included the second-fastest in BBL history against the Sydney Thunder where he reached 50 from just 16 balls, including hitting five sixes in an over.

Australia’s Limited-Overs Skipper Finch Opens Up on Bio-Bubble Life

Australian limited over skipper Aaron Finch opened up about his concerns about living in a bio-bubble over prolonged periods of time.

Finch Opens up on COVID Bio-bubble

According to Finch, “being locked up for months is unsustainable” especially for married cricketers with kids.

“My wife worked it out the other day that I’ve had 20 or 21 days since April that I haven’t been in lockdown or in a bubble. If the COVID bubble and hubs continue for a long time, that will be something that’s looked into, no doubt. The welfare of players is paramount and being locked up for months is pretty unsustainable, when you’re away from your families and your families can’t travel,” Finch said, as quoted by AFP.

“That will be individual as well some guys who are married with kids will find it tougher than a young single guy, for example. We just have to monitor everything in that regard,” said the 34-year-old, who has not played a Test match since 2018.

    Australia tour of New Zealand

Before he takes his flight to New Zealand, for the 5-match T20I series in February, Finch is looking forward to a much-needed rest. Australia’s T20I squad are scheduled to leave for New Zealand on February 7 for the series starting on February 22 in Christchurch.

“I’m going down to the beach for a few days to relax. My kit bag won’t be coming out of my car, I can tell you. It will be locked away.”

The ECB have adopted a rotational squad system to be able to sustain their busy cricketing calendar amid the pandemic.

“If you’re playing a few formats of the game, there’s going to need to be a chop-out from selectors and Cricket Australia. You notice what England are doing with their squads at the moment where there are guys who aren’t travelling for the first two Tests (against India) and then coming in (later),” Finch added.

The Melbourne Renegades captain has been under fire in the ongoing season of the BBL 2020-21 and has attested that the life in bio-bubble has put a strain on his batting form as well.

“I had an absolute shocker with the bat. The harder I trained the worse I got, which is the opposite to what everyone tells you to do,” Finch said.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly was taken to Apollo Hospital in Kolkata on Wednesday after he suffered with Chest pain for the second time.

Ganguly Admitted in Hospital After Chest Pain

Earlier this month, the BCCI president was admitted to the Woodlands hospital in Kolkata following a mild heart attack.

The cricket icon was diagnosed with three blocked coronary arteries, following which a stent was inserted in one to remove the blockage. He had undergone angioplasty and left the hospital after 5 days of continuous monitoring by the doctors. Sourav Ganguly then addresses media after getting discharged.

DADA suffered chest pain for the second time

Dr. Rupali Basu MD & CEO Woodlands Hospital had earlier told India Today that Ganguly will be able to resume his normal life in another 3-4 weeks once the remaining two blocked arteries are revascularised.

“I don’t think we are considering surgery at the moment because of his young age and the advancement of angioplasty.

“But we are taking expert opinions from the best cardiologists in the country and in the world and then we will have to take a call about what to do with the 2 blocked arteries and once that is done, another 3-4 weeks of resting and he should be back to his active life and that’s what we want for Dada to be back to his active life,” Dr. Basu had said.

In this scenario BCCI president Sourav Ganguly rushed to hospital after he felt chest pain on Wednesday(27-01-2021).

    Apollo Hospital updates on Ganguly

“Sourav Ganguly has come for a checkup of his cardiac condition. There is no change in his parameters since his last hospitalisation & his vital parameters are stable,” the hospital said.
