India vs England: Virat Kohli Praises Joe Root For his 100th Test Match

Indian skipper Virat Kohli praises England Test skipper Joe Root who is playing his 100th test match while playing against India.

    Virat Kohli praises Joe Root

Joe Root set to play his 100th Test match while playing the 1st Test match against India at Chennai.

“A big congratulations to Joe, playing 100 Tests is no small achievement and he can be very proud of this journey,” said Kohli, on the eve of the 1st Test.

But that’s not all. Kohli went on to praise the 30-year-old who, according to the Indian captain, is the ‘face of England cricket’.

    Joe Root
    Joe Root

“I have good memories of watching Joe come on to the international scene and he probably got off to a headstart compared to the other three in that group of four. He’s someone who has really become that face of England’s batting over the years,” Kohli added.

“The talk of ‘big four’ is all created by the media, but as an international cricketer you understand impact players when you see them and Joe has been one of them for a while now. As opposition you always try and disrupt the opposition batting plans and, when we play England, Joe is always that vital wicket that we look to get early on in the innings,” he said.

“That is a compliment to his game, to the longevity and consistency over so many years. Hopefully, in the future, we can sit down and have a nice long chat about how our journeys have gone and played each other over so many years.”

Kohli’s heap of praise on Root showcases the bigger picture wherein each of the ‘Big Four’ members have come forward to back each other. Besides Kohli and Root, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson and Australia’s star batsman Steve Smith constitute the ‘Big Four’ of this generation in cricket.

Root, ahead of the Chennai Test, has come forward and said that instead of picking up of individual battles, his journey of improvement along the way entails following the careers of Kohli, Smith, and Williamson.

“It is silly not to watch how they go about things … how they manage their own games and keep evolving and getting better all the time, and then try and add that to my own game,” Root said on the eve of the 1st Test.

“In terms of those individual battles, for me, that’s not the most important thing. It’s not something that I will look at, what I will look at is always trying to win this series.”

And then there’s the New Zealand skipper, who is loved by one and all among cricket fans, who reflects the same ideology as his Big Gour counterparts.

“The other three players that you mentioned [in Big Four], world-class and I certainly admire the way they go about their cricket. You can always learn a lot from those sorts of players, especially they are all different, that’s the kind of the beauty of the game, you got so many fantastic players that are trying to move the game forward,” Williamson told Sports Today.

Ajinkya Rahane on Sharing Dressing Room with Overseas Players in IPL

Ajinkya Rahane said the top Indian cricketers may share the dressing room with the cricketers Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, and Jofra Archer but they do not share their gameplan, keeping international cricket in mind.

Rahane on sharing the dressing room in IPL

“See, we definitely play in the IPL, but Test cricket and IPL are completely different. We do know how their bowlers bowl here, but length (that one bowl) is completely different in Test cricket from what they are in white-ball (formats),” Rahane said.

Rahane, who has played a lot of cricket with the likes of Buttler, Stokes and Archer for Rajasthan Royals, said it is a different ballgame altogether when you represent your country.

“What we do in IPL, it’s not like we tell them all the things and I think that is very important. Yes, we have played a lot of cricket together, but when you represent the country, it is all about how best you can give individually and as a team,” Rahane said.

Rahane went on to talk about the balance in England’s squad. While he admitted that Archer and Stokes are key players for England, Rahane said one can’t ignore the kind of balance that the opposition squad as a whole possesses.

“Ben Stokes and (Jofra) Archer, they are really good players. They did really well for England, so it is not about any individual. I think it is all about a team, England team, they are a very balanced outfit which did really well recently against Sri Lanka.

“So for us, what is important is that we plan against all their guys and just play as a team here and back our strengths.”

Team India will return to action as they host England in the first Test match that is set to begin on Friday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

India Will Rely Upon Gill for Winning Matches Across all Formats, VVS Laxman

Former Indian batsman VVS Laxman stating that Shubman Gill is going to be the ‘most-talked-about cricketer’ in the coming days.

    VVS Laxman Praises Shubman Gill

After amassing 259 runs from 6 innings in the series Down Under, Gill is now getting ready to face Joe Root’s England in the first Test which begins on Friday in Chennai.

“I think he will be the most-talked-about cricketer, not only in Test match cricket but in all three formats. The reason I say that is he didn’t get it easy. I felt the kind of talent and the performances he has shown in various levels whether it’s in the IPL, whether it’s India A or first-class cricket for Punjab, I think he has been very consistent.

I think he waited patiently for his opportunity while some of his colleagues got ahead of him,” VVS Laxman told Sports Today.

    Shubman Gill

“What I really enjoyed was he was ready for the big occasion. And opening in Australia against a very good fast-bowling attack in the form of Hazlewood, Starc and Cummins is never easy but to do that in this fashion after India were bowled out for 36 and the aggression and technique he showed.

The killer instinct he showed by backing his ability without comprising his ability and flamboyance speaks volumes of the work he has put in,” he added.

Laxman was of the opinion that the Indian team management will rely upon Gill for winning matches across all formats.

“I always believe the results might not go your way, but the way you prepare in international cricket is very important. I saw the preparation in the way he batted, not necessarily because of the way he batted. I feel he is someone who India will rely on in winning a lot of matches in all 3 formats,” Laxman said.

BCCI Needs Hardik, Bumrah to be in their Peak Form For T20 World Cup

BCCI wants to have Hardik Pandya and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah in peak condition before going into the T20 World Cup later this year.

BCCI Prepares Hardik and Bumrah for T20 World Cup

Indian selection committee named Hardik Pandya in the first two test matches against England. Team India needs Hardik and Bumrah to be fully fit for the upcoming T20 World Cup scheduled in October-November.

The two key players of the team India has no ready-made replacement if they face an injury. For this reason, it has been decided not to overuse the two key assets in such a busy year.

    jasprit bumrah
    jasprit bumrah

“His (Pandya’s) inclusion for the Test series is because the team management wanted to monitor his progress closely. They want him to be ready for the away England Test series as he will be handier in those conditions.

There is no red-ball cricket in the domestic calendar this season, so this way, his bowling can also be monitored. With the T20 World Cup to be played down the year, we don’t want Pandya’s return to be a hasty one. A similar thought process has gone about Bumrah, and the team will use both of them wisely,” a BCCI official said.

Hardik Pandya has undergone back surgery

Pandya had a back surgery in 2019 and has mostly played in the Indian team as a specialist batsman since. He didn’t bowl for Mumbai Indians in the 2020 IPL either.

    Hardik Pandya back Surgery
    Hardik Pandya back Surgery

He bowled only four overs in the second ODI against Australia in Sydney. Pandya had remodelled his action and is working closely with former India pacer Zaheer Khan at Mumbai Indians.

Pandya played three ODIs and three T20Is on the recent tour of Australia where he showed what he could do as a batsman. He scored 90 and an unbeaten 92 in the one-dayers and played a crucial role in India’s T20I series victory. Bumrah has been a real asset with the ball in all formats and India doesn’t want to drain him out before the big ICC event.

For the Indian Check crew, the center order has choices like Ajinkya Rahane, Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant, and Mayank Agarwal. Whereas the choice committee has picked all-rounders Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, and R Ashwin for the primary two England Assessments.

So far as the tempo assault is worried, Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav are but to regain full health.

Michael Vaughan Names Rishabh Pant as Next Sehwag

Former England captain Michael Vaughan compares Rishabh Pant to Virender Sehwag. Viru used to pose a great threat on opposition bowlers by smashing massive shots of the very firs over.

    Michael Vaughan Praises Rishabh Pant

Michael Vaughan said Rishabh Pant, while batting at No. 6, can do what Virender Sehwag did for India put fear into the minds of opposition bowlers. Vaughan said Pant can end up making mistakes, at times, but he will also be able to win matches for Team India.

“Sehwag put the fear into opposing bowlers and Pant has the same ability at six to do the same. He will make mistakes and get out for low scores at times but he will also win so many games,” Michael Vaughan said, as quoted by Sky Sports.

    Rishabh Pant
    Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant is gearing up for the upcoming 4-Test series against England starting Friday, February 5 in Chennai. Pant is likely to retain the wicket-keeper spot and be picked ahead of Wriddhiman Saha who has been considered for the specialist role in home Tests.

Vaughan waits for the Pant vs Stokes

Meanwhile, Vaughan said he finds Pant along with England all-rounder Ben Stokes as one of the most enjoyable cricketers to watch, saying the India wicketkeeper can cause trouble to opposition if he maintains his style of playing the sport.

“He is up there with Ben Stokes as the most enjoyable cricketers to watch. When Pant goes out to bat, I watch. I would not want to be next in because you know things will happen,” Vaughan said.

“But if he continues to play the game with the joy and energy he has at the moment as if he is still an 11-year-old then he will pose so many challenges to the opposing team.”

In the 4th and final Test in Brisbane, Pant hit 89 not out as India became the first side since Sir Vivian Richards’ West Indies to beat Australia at the Gabba in Test since 1988-89.

India’s new pace sensation T Natarajan was on Wednesday named in the Tamil Nadu squad for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy one-day tournament.

T Natarajan Included in Vijay Hazare Trophy

T Natarajan will be making his comeback to the Tamil Nadu set up after a rollercoaster tour of Australia in which he went from being a net bowler to making his T20I, ODI, and Test debuts.

Left-arm pacer Natarajan, who became the first Indian cricketer to make his international debut across all three formats during the same tour in Australia, is not part of the India squad for the first two Tests against England in Chennai.

He was part of the XI that claimed the series-clinching win in the Brisbane Test against Australia after having his ODI and T20 debut during the tour.

Tamil Nadu chief selector S Vasudevan said Natarajan has been picked in the squad but they are awaiting BCCI’s nod for him to play the tournament.

“Yes, we have selected Natarajan but the BCCI has to give the go-ahead for him to play in the tournament as they want to keep him fresh for the ODIs and T20s against England,” he told PTI.

“It is good that Vignesh is back. He did very well last season. Vijay Shankar has not recovered fully and hence has not been included,” he said. The BCCI is yet to announce the dates for the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

All-rounder Baba Aparajith was named vice-captain of the team, according to a TNCA media release.

As the filter makes the body ripple in waves, the players appear as if they are dancing in a groovy style. To make things funnies, Ishan walks by the centre of the frame with a human skeleton in the same groovy waves.

Varun is lying on the bench, looking back at his teammate. Navdeep and Kamlesh stand in the background, playing with a ball and amused by Ishan’s antics.

Shreyas, who recorded the funky video, posted the video asking his fans who is your favourite?

He added “just another day with the *snake emoji*”

The video has received over 3 lakh likes since being posted. Most people commented that Ishan was their favourite, dancing with the skeleton.

Quinton de Kock Will Steps Down as Test Skipper, Confirms Mark Boucher

South Africa head coach Mark Boucher on Wednesday confirmed that Quinton de Kock will no longer continue as the Test skipper after the second match against Pakistan.

    Mark Boucher slams de Kock

“When we get back after this tour we`ve got a bit of time before our next Test series so we can sit down and make a good, solid call on who can take over from him and release him from that burden and try and get the best out of him. It`s been tough on Quinny. If you`re not scoring runs it gets highlighted, especially if you`re a captain,” ESPNCricinfo quoted Boucher as saying.

“We`re not that harsh on Quinny in this environment. We know that he`s a quality player and there`s a good innings around the corner for him. He has been given the extra burden of being captain and that can be tough and something he`s not used to,” he added.

    de kock
    de Kock

De Kock was appointed as the Test skipper for the 2020-21 summer until a permanent candidate was zeroed in.

Nauman Ali had made a memorable debut for Pakistan as he picked seven wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the second innings of the first Test, to power his side to a win over South Africa by seven wickets on day four.

With this win, Pakistan took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Chasing the target of 88, Pakistan openers Imran Butt and Abid Ali avoided risky shots as the team was not chasing a huge target. However, Anrich Nortje came out all guns blazing in the eighth over, removing both Abid (10) and Butt (12).

Azhar Ali and skipper Azam then joined hands in the middle. Both played brilliantly, scoring regular boundaries but with the team just two runs away, Keshav Maharaj dismissed Babar (30) in the 23rd over. Fawad Alam then came out and hit a boundary to take Pakistan over the line.

Will Pucovski Claims Facing Bumrah Felt like Playing PlayStation game

Australia’s Will Pucovski explained how batting against Jasprit Bumrah reminded him of playing cricket games on the PlayStation.

Will Pucovski on Facing Jasprit Bumrah

Will Pucovski, the 23-year-old opening batsman who made his Test debut for Australia in the Sydney Test against India, has described what it is like to face fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah.

    jasprit bumrah
    jasprit bumrah

“I actually genuinely felt like I like was playing PlayStation game, it was like International Cricket 2011 or something on PlayStation. They had this view, so I still remember faking illness to get a day off school when the game came out,” Pucovski said on The Grade Cricketer YouTube channel when asked about his experience of facing Bumrah.

Pucovski scored a half-century in his first innings batting for Australia. The 23-year-old batsman hit four boundaries en route to scoring 62 off 110 balls before being given out LBW to India pacer Navdeep Saini, also making his Test debut.

In the second innings, Pucovski was out for 10, edging Mohammed Siraj to substitute wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha. He later hurt his shoulder whole fielding and was ruled out of the Brisbane Test.

    Pucovski explains video game scenario

Pucovski explained the whole video game experience, narrating how he was a big Shane Watson fan and would mostly play as the former Australia all-rounder in the games.

“I loved Shane Watson at that time. So, whenever Shane Watson was opening the batting, it might have been Ashes cricket, it was one of the games, and they had this new view. I thought it was pretty cool where you were like a bit of a spider cam above the batter, so you’d be almost facing, and I’d never played a proper game at the SCG before,” Pucovski went on.

“Still, I had played a PlayStation game there, getting Shane Watson a 100 on Ashes cricket whatever year it was when I skipped a day of school. So, I still remember it, and I was like I genuinely remember sitting there Bumrah was at the top of his mark, and I’m like I know this because this is what happened when I was facing England with Shane Watson.”

England’s Jofra Archer Opens on Body management Issues

Paceman Jofra Archer said Tuesday that “body management” will be crucial during a busy year of cricket for England as he returns after a break for the Test clash in India.

Jofra Archer on Body management Issues

The 25-year-old Archer, along with Ben Stokes, was rested for the Sri Lanka tour as Joe Root’s England swept the two-Test series 2-0 last month.

“It’s going to be a long long year,” Archer told reporters after a training session in Chennai.

“We’ve got a few series coming up. I think body management is going to be essential if I want to play everything, almost everything.”

The Barbados-born bowler joined his teammates including coach Chris Silverwood and Jos Buttler in lauding the England and Wales Cricket board for their rest-and-rotate policy during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Anyone that’s criticising it never spent time in the bubble. One golfer left after four days. We have been in here for almost a year now,” he said.

“At the end of the day humans are social people and sometimes it gets hard, especially if you’ve not had a great game or if you are not feeling good but then in cricket there is no escape.”

He added: “I think the ECB has made it really great to give people (time off), myself I had six weeks away.

“I think Jos (Buttler) is done after this game and for a little bit Sam’s (Curran) gone. So they are making a priority, everyone gets time away, so that we can come back refreshed and ready to go.”

Archer, who has become a key part of England’s pace attack since making his debut in 2019, said he is ready to be in the team bubble for a few months ahead.

“I don’t mind to be honest because I know that I would get time away so I’m just going to follow the job at hand now,” said Archer.

“And if it gets too overbearing then there is no shame in saying that. But I think right now I am good to go until at least July.”

Archer has claimed 38 wickets in 11 Tests and 37 scalps in 24 limited-overs matches for the national team.

Qualifications for India to Play World Test Championships Finals

    India tour of Australia
    Indian Test cricket team

What are the qualifications for India, England and Australia to secure the last spot in World Test Championships finals?. The question starts to spread like fire after New Zealand qualified to play the WTC finals.

After Australia postponed the tour of South Africa, NZ made their way to get part in finals of World Test Championships. As Australia left out with Test matches the spot for the opposition gets in heat between India, England and Australia.

How India can qualify for the World Test Championships finals?

Current PCT of India – 71.7%

Remaining matches: Four-Test home series against England.

Though India remains in the secured spot of the WTC points table still they need the following qualifications to eligible for the World Test Championships finals.

    India needs to beat England by 2-1, 2-0, 3-1, 3-0 or 4-0.

To cement their place in the final, India will need to win their upcoming four-match home series against England by at least a two-match margin. If they lose one Test, then they will need to win three games (2-1, 2-0, 3-1, 3-0, or 4-0), whereas a 0-3 or 0-4 loss against England will wipe away their chances of making the final regardless of other results.

As of now, India leads the 4 match test series by 2-1 with the last match scheduled to begin on March 4th. The eligibility for the World Test Championship finals has been ended in favour of India after South Africa vs Australia tour postponed.

According to Sydney Morning Herald, India might still qualify for the World Test Championship’s final even if they lose the 4th Test match as the ICC is looking forward to the formal complaint of Cricket South Africa over Cricket Australia.

How England can qualify for World Test Championships finals?

Current PCT of England – 68.7%

Remaining matches: Four Tests in India.

England needs to beat India by 3-1, 3-0 or 4-0.

Fourth-placed England’s best chance of reaching the final is to win the four-match series against India by a 3-1, 3-0, or 4-0 margin. Any other results require a favourable combination of series results not featuring England.

How Australia can qualify for WTC finals?

Current PCT of Australia – 69.2%

    Remaining matches: NIL

Though Australia lefct out with Test matches still they can make their way into the WTC finals. The Australia’s last chance depends on the India vs Australia test series. Following are the chances for Aussies to enter into the WTC finals.

    • If India wins the series by 1-0.
    • If England wins series by 1-0.
    • If England draws series by 2-2.
    • All 4 Tests between England and India results as a draw.

Australia slipped to third place with 69.2% points after their loss in the final Test against India in Brisbane. To secure a place in the final, Australia had to win at least two Tests out of three against South Africa and avoid any losses.

However,  their qualification will no depend on how India vs England series pans out. If India manages to win the series 1-0, that will ensure Australia will sneak through. A 2-2, 1-1, 4 Tests draw in the series is also favourable for Australia. While in an England win, if the margin remains 1-0, 2-1, 2-0 in favour of England, Australia would still make it to the final
