Ramiz Raja Referred to Misbah-ul-Haq as ‘Poor Man’s MS Dhoni’

Ramiz Raja recently referred to Misbah-ul-Haq as 'poor man's MS Dhoni'

While striking out the similarities between Misbah-ul-Haq and Dhoni, Ramiz Raja said that the Pakistan head coach needs to leave his subdued approach behind and adapt according to the modern demands of the game.

Ramiz Raja on Dhoni vs Misbah-ul-Haq

Ramiz said Misbah also possesses the calm demeanour of former India captain MS Dhoni but he has to change and adapt according to the modern demands of the game.

“Misbah’s training and upbringing is different. Let me put it this way, he is the poor man’s Dhoni. MS was also restrained, no expressions and not emotional. Misbah is also like this but I think now he has to go on modern thinking,” Ramiz said in an interview on the Cricket Baaz YouTube channel.

Ramiz said Misbah at times gets too protective when Pakistan loses a match.

“Misbah has to take a new direction because there is a need to set the GPS right for Pakistan cricket because aggression is in our DNA. I think at times he gets too protective and he gets cagey as soon as we lose a match. But if our products and talent is right we shouldn’t be afraid of hiccups and setbacks.”

Ramiz also called for the appointment of a chief executive for the Pakistan team who would oversee only technical cricket matters related to the team selection, coaches, players etc.

He also felt that time has come for Pakistan to stop reliance on foreign coaches.

“In the past I could understand we needed foreign coaches because we were young to this field but now we have grown ourselves in this area.

“In fact, I think there is no need to have permanent coaches with the team for all tours and we should only be appointing specialist coaches as required on tour to touring series to series basis.

“Appointment of coaches should be tour-based and opposition-based. Use their expertise for a series and move on rather than carry on with them for a long period.”

Talking about the World Test Championship, Ramiz said: “The current format was lopsided and prolonged and it made no sense not having India and Pakistan series.

“Teams didn’t play the same number of matches and even the points system was weird. Next time when the WTC has held no cricket should be held at that time, No ODIs or T20s, if you want to promote test cricket and infuse life into it and also attract sponsors to this format,” he added.

Harmanpreet Kaur Ruled Out of First T20I Against South Africa

India Women’s T20I captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been ruled out of the T20I series opener against South Africa on Saturday in Lucknow owing to an injury.

In her absence, Smriti Mandhana will lead the side in what will be their first appearance in the format since the T20 World Cup final on March 8 last year.

Harmanpreet Kaur ruled out of the South Africa series

Kaur had suffered a hip-flexor injury in the fifth and final ODI against South Africa on Wednesday, having settled in to put together a half-century stand with Mithali Raj before retiring out in the 31st over just as India looked to launch. She didn’t take the field for the rest of the game.

“She [Kaur] has been ruled out of tomorrow’s match and rest of the updates on her injury will be given by the medical team and the team management,” Mandhana said on the eve of the first T20I. “It will be better for them to speak about it rather than me.”

    smriti mandhana

Mandhana, 24, has led India in four T20Is, her maiden bow as captain having come in March 2019, where she filled in for an injured Kaur in the three-match T20I series against a visiting England side in Guwahati. India suffered a whitewash in that assignment, but in her next stint as captain, in November that year, she led the T20I side to a 61-run win against hosts West Indies.

Mandhana also confirmed that India would be going in with the same opening combination they had in the T20 World Cup, with 17-year-old Shafali Verma, who couldn’t find a place in the ODI squad though she had topped the run-chart for India in the world tournament, partnering Mandhana.

“India have done well in the last couple of years all thanks to the spinners. I wouldn’t say they were bad; I felt they were a bit inconsistent in their bowling [in the ODI series].”

“As of now we both, together, have had good partnerships since last two years, so we are looking at the same combination,” Mandhana said.

India’s 4-1 loss in the ODI series, which head coach WV Raman coach attributed in most part to a lack of “game time”, threw into sharp relief South Africa’s meticulous planning to flatten the hosts’ vaunted spin attack.

The Indian spinners averaged 53.15 in the five matches combined, their worst in a women’s ODI series/tournament where they bowled 100 or more overs. Their bowling strike rate of 70.7 was also their worst in a series/tournament in the 50-over format.

“[The] spinners have been our biggest strength for the longest time,” Mandhana said. “India have done well in the last couple of years all thanks to the spinners. I wouldn’t say they were bad; I felt they were a bit inconsistent in their bowling.

They were very good in patches and there’s was the one oddball which didn’t go our way, or didn’t go their way, so that’s the talk of being more consistent in pitching the ball in good areas because if you keep pitching the six balls in the same areas, it gets tough as a batter.

In T20Is, with just four overs – 24 balls – I think it will be easier for the spinners to focus on the 24 balls rather than the 60 balls. I look at it that way.”

Mandhana also said that the BCCI is in talks with its English counterpart about the participation of the Indian players in the Hundred, which begins on July 21, but stressed that a final decision would be contingent upon the schedule of the national team.

ESPNcricinfo reported last month that four Indian players are on the radar of the Hundred teams and their involvement in the tournament could come about after India’s tour of England, likely starting June, which is set to include a one-off Test.

“The ECB is in talks with the BCCI but we don’t have an update yet about it,” Mandhana said. “Let’s see, it will be highly depending on the schedule what the Indian team will be having because our first priority will definitely be the India matches, so I am sure the BCCI and ECB are working towards it, and let’s hope to hear something around [the] 100-ball [tournament] from them soon.”

Suryakumar Yadav replies for his controversial dismissal

From the very first ball that Suryakumar Yadav faced in international cricket, the 30-year-old star looked like he belonged at this stage and was worthy of every single ounce of fame that he has received over the years, while playing domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League.

Suryakumar Yadav hits six off the first delivery

With not a hint of nervousness, SKY sent the ball flying over the boundary rope off a pull before walking to the middle to chat with his batting partner KL Rahul.

Even England paceman Jofra Archer couldn’t help but offer a modest smile after looking at the shot.

Being promoted to play at the number three spot turned out to be a great success for the Mumbai star who rallied alongside Rahul and Kohli, scored an important 57 with six fours and three sixes coming off his bat in just 31 deliveries.

He was having the time of his life, a dream start to his international innings that ended in a hurry based on a questionable call made by the third umpire Virender Sharma to go ahead with the on-field umpire’s soft call out after having inconsequential evidence.

The dismissal led to some of the big stars like Virat Kohli and Stuart Broad talk about the need to bring a change in the rule.

I don’t know why there can’t an “I don’t know” call for the umpires. You want these things ironed out to keep the game linear. But we want clarity on the field,” Virat Kohli said in the post-match presentation ceremony.

However, when Suryakumar himself was asked about his feelings towards the dismissal, he responded with calmness.

“It was a great opportunity for me to bat at number three for India. Yeah, I knew he will come a little short at me, I am really happy with the way things went. Regarding my dismissal, not really disappointed because few things are not in my control. Things that are in my control, I try to control that and things outside that, are not in my hands,” he said in the post-match virtual press conference.

For his modest reply and content nature, fans have been lauding the righty batsman ever since:

IND vs ENG: Wasim Jaffer Slams Michael Vaughan With Tweet

Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer on Thursday took an indirect dig at ex-England captain Michael Vaughan after his tweet how the Mumbai Indians made an impact in the fourth T20I in Ahmedabad.

    Wasim Jaffer slams Michael Vaughan

India had four players in their XI from the Mumbai Indians squad – Surya, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya and Rohit – for the do-or-die match against England. Rohit also captained the team for a few overs during England’s run chase in Virat Kohli’s absence.

Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya and Rohit even combined to take the wicket of England opener Jason Roy in the tense chase at the Narendra Modi Stadium which led Vaughan to comment on how the Mumbai Indians outclassed the opponents.

“Just a thought … @surya_14kumar Mumbai Indian … @hardikpandya7 Mumbai Indian … @ImRo45 captaincy Mumbai Indian !!!! @mipaltan #JustSaying #INDvENG,” Vaughan tweeted immediately after Roy got out in the 9th over.

Vaughan has been regularly mentioning how the MI players have had an impact in the series and once even mentioned how the defending IPL champions have a better overall team than the Indian side after the 1st T20I.

Jaffer, although he didn’t take or tag anybody’s name in his tweet, responded by saying: “When you say your team wasn’t defeated by a national team but by a franchise team, you’re not trolling your opponents, you’re trolling your own team. Night all.”

The previous three matches were won by the team electing to field but Virat Kohli led India managed to buck that trend after losing the toss. Both teams play the deciding 5th and final T20I at the same venue on Saturday before moving to Pune for a 3-match ODI series beginning on Tuesday.

IND vs ENG: Eoin Morgan Opens Up on the Importance of 5th T20I

England skipper Eoin Morgan claims that the final match of the T20I series would resemble the importance of the T20WC finals. Virat Kohli led India and England lock their horns to play the decider match of the 5 matches T20I series.

Eoin Morgan on 5th T20I vs India

Morgan and Stokes admitted that while it was a big ask to call on the lower order to try and see England over the line – as capable as the likes of Jofra Archer and Chris Jordan are with the bat – it illustrated the sort of tight situation they expected to be put in when India hosts the World Cup in October.

And while sealing the series with a match to spare would have allowed England the luxury of experimenting with their line-up, Morgan said the fact the final match would be the decider was a good thing ahead of the global tournament.

“We really want to play in must-win games like this,” Morgan told the host broadcaster, Star Sports. “They’re the closest thing that we get to playing in a World Cup or a Champions Trophy and against a fantastic side like India, it should bode to be a great game.

    Suryakumar Yadav and Virat Kohli
    Suryakumar Yadav and Virat Kohli

“Certainly all to play for. Winning away from home is a lot more difficult than at home, obviously, for various reasons, but to win away from home would be great.”

Neither side has made any secret of the fact that this series – between the No. 1 and No. 2-ranked sides in the world – is all about World Cup preparation, although England would dearly love to add to an impressive record away from home, having won their last five away T20I series. India, meanwhile, have only lost a T20I series on home soil once since the World T20 in 2016.

“In an ideal world, we would have loved to have gone into the next game [having] already won the series,” Stokes said in his post-match press conference. “We go into the next game with a huge amount of pressure on our shoulders as a team, because whoever wins that game wins the series.

“That’s great for us as a team, especially with a T20 World Cup coming up because the more pressure situations we get put into as a team the more I think we’ll benefit from it.

Hardik Pandya bags 2 wickets in the 4th T20I vs England
Hardik Pandya bags 2 wickets in the 4th T20I vs England

“It is a final because if we don’t win then we lose a series and we don’t want to lose series, we want to win and we want to make a habit of winning them. The more situations we get put into where we’ve got pressure on us and we keep prevailing, that’s just going to do us the world of good.”

Batting for just the second time this series, as questions continue to be asked about how England best deploy him in the shortest format, Stokes fell agonisingly short of a half-century when he spooned Thakur to Yadav at long-off for 46 off 23 balls. His 65-run partnership with Jonny Bairstow had kept England in control of the chase but the loss of three wickets for nine runs in the space of 10 deliveries left them with too much to do in the end.

“It’s always frustrating getting out, especially when you feel like you’ve got the game in your hands,” Stokes said. “You’ve got to look at these things and assess them and learn from them. We’ve got the T20 World Cup coming up and will be put in a similar situation at some point. These are all great learning experiences.

“I hope that everyone is still asking questions of themselves and I hope Morgs thinks there is more work to do, because that’s how you get better, when you’re always looking to improve. The more pressure we get put under as a team, the more that’s going to do for us in that World Cup because World Cups can end very quickly, every game is a big game.”

IND vs ENG: Virat Kohli Updates on his Thigh Injury

Virat Kohli got a thigh injury in the 2nd innings of the 4th T20I but played down the concern saying that he will be fine for the series-finale vs England on March 20.

    Virat Kohli Updates on Injury

Kohli hurt himself during the 15th over as he sprinted in from deep midwicket and threw off-balance in an unsuccessful attempt to stop a second run. He went off the field after that and watched the rest of the game from the dugout and was even seen limping during the closing stages of the match.

“I ran for a ball, I dived and I threw it, so I was probably not in the best position,” Kohli told host broadcaster Star Sports at the post-match presentation. “I just moved out to the outfield, earlier I was fielding in the inner ring. And the temperature drops pretty quickly, so your body tends to get stiff. So I just aggravated my upper quad a little bit and I didn’t want to make it into a niggle or an injury.

“It’s nothing serious. I should be fine by the day after tomorrow because we have the game in the evening. So probably took a smarter decision to come off and not sprint five-six more times and probably do it more because we have an important game coming up.”

In Kohli’s absence, Rohit Sharma took over the reins as the Indian bowlers closed out the game to level the series 2-2. The decider will be played on Saturday.

India rode on superb knocks from debutant Suryakumar Yadav (57), Shreyas Iyer (37), and Rishabh Pant (30) to post a challenging 185 for 8, their highest total of the series, after being put into bat.

The hosts then restricted England to 177 for 8 in 20 overs with Shardul Thakur grabbing 3 wickets while Hardik Pandya and Rahul Chahar took 2 each.

The ICC released Cricketer’s version of the Justice League poster where Indian skipper Virat Kohli is portrayed as Aquaman of the movie.

    ICC version of Justice League

In the poster, Team India captain Virat Kohli was chosen as the Aquaman, While New Zealand’s Kane Williamson and England’s Ben Stokes were picked as Superman and Batman respectively.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam also got his place in the elusive poster as the Flash while Kieron Pollard was portrayed as the Cyborg.

Australian star all-rounder Ellyse Perry was chosen as the only woman superhero in the Justice League – Wonder Woman.

ICC captioned the post: “Unite the League #SnyderCut.”

Kohli, who got the Aquaman portrayal, is undoubtedly one of the greatest batsmen of modern-day cricket as has won several matches for India. While Williamson – Superman, has been the backbone of the New Zealand team in the past couple of years.

Stokes, who got the Batman character, have played a crucial role in England’s maiden ODI World Cup triumph in 2019.

The original Justice League movie was released in 2017 but faced an underwhelming response from fans across the globe as they were unhappy with the CGI of Superman’s character which was played by Henry Cavill. Interestingly the original movie was also initially directed by Zack Snyder but in the midway Joss Whedon took the charge of the movie.

Meanwhile, Aquaman (Virat Kohli) and Batman (Ben Stokes) will lock horns on Thursday evening in the fourth T20I between India and England at Narendra Modi Stadium. England are currently leading the series with 2-1 as the hosts will look to bounce back in the series with two matches to spare.

Fans start to go crazy after ICC released the poster. Check out some of the replies to the ICC on behalf of the tweet.

    Mohammad Amir backs Jasprit Bumrah

The 28-year-old bowler Mohammad Amir announced his retirement in December 2020, has now come up with the example of Indian quick Jasprit Bumrah to explain his point.

In a conversation with Cricket Pakistan, the former speedster said that the Indian pacer received backing from the team management despite a few hiccups in his career.

    bharat arun
Bharat arun with Ishant Sharma Shami and Bumrah

“I think it is not the right mindset to look at the performance of only four or five matches. If you remember, [Jasprit] Bumrah had only one wicket in 16 matches when he was playing the Australia series but nobody questioned him because they knew that he is a match-winning bowler. That was the time they [Indian team management] should have supported him and they did that,” said Amir.

“You are given the job to help the player when he is not performing and not just discard him from the side. If it’s like this, then we should give you an entire team made up of players like Cristiano Ronaldo so that you can sit back and relax and do nothing,” he added.

Amir further spoke about his decision to retire at an early age. He said that he accessed the situation before taking the step.

“I carefully looked at all my options and assessed the situation before taking the decision about retirement. I’m enjoying cricket and spending time with my family and currently have no plans about taking back my retirement,” he said.

“If it was only about my performance, I would have never taken the decision about retirement. But their [team management] statements about me regarding my retirement from Test cricket really hurt me. I have no personal issue with them as they are my elders and legends of the game,” he added.

Piyush Chawla has been roped by Mumbai Indians for Rs. 2.4 crores in IPL 2021 Auction

Former India wicketkeeper and Mumbai Indians’ talent scout Parthiv Patel explained the reason why MI roped Piyush Chawla for ₹2.4 crores in the IPL 2021 Auction.

The reason why MI roped Piyush Chawla in IPL 2021 Auction

Patel reasoned that MI needed an experienced spinner in the line-up and hence went after the 32-year-old leggie.

MI bought a total of seven players during the auctions which included Adam Milne, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Piyush Chawla, James Neesham, Arjun Tendulkar, Yudhvir Charak, Marco Jansen. It seems as if MI have covered all their bases for the title defence. Check out the list of players released, retained, and purchased by MI in IPL 2021 Auction.

“He knows how to bowl on Chennai wickets or on slow and low wickets. So, I think Mumbai Indians have covered all their bases. It depends on where they are playing, so it won’t be a disadvantage. That’s what champions can do, even after winning a tournament they try and fill spots, and that’s exactly what Mumbai Indians have done,” Parthiv said on Star Sports show Cricket Connected.

“I don’t think it is a disadvantage for Mumbai Indians, because if you look at the Mumbai Indians squad last year, there was only one thing which everyone could notice; they didn’t have an experienced spinner. They have Krunal Pandya and Rahul Chahar, but they needed someone experienced, and that’s what Mumbai Indians did in this auction. They got Piyush Chawla, a very experienced campaigner in IPL,” said Patel.

    Chawla in IPL 2020

CSK had bought Piyush Chawla in the IPL 2020 auction for 6.75 crores after his former franchise Kolkata Knight Riders released him. But in an unexpected move IPL 2020 has shifted to UAE owing to the COVID19 pandemic.

Playing around 7 matches for CSK in IPL 2020 Chawla took only 6 wickets at an economy of 9.09. This may be the reason for CSK to release him ahead of the IPL 2021 Auction. The IPL 2021 is scheduled to begin from April 9 with an opening match between defending champions Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

IND vs ENG: Ajay Jadeja Breaks the Reason for India’s loss in 3rd T20I

    Ajay Jadeja
    Ajay Jadeja

Former cricketer Ajay Jadeja claims that some players are not playing in ‘their ideal positions’ in ongoing India vs England T20I series. Jadeja’s comments come after Pandya batted at no.7 for India in the third T20I against England on Tuesday.

Ajay Jadeja on India vs England 3rd T20I

India made 1 change to their playing XI from the last game by bringing back vice-captain Rohit Sharma in place of Suryakumar Yadav, who had made his international debut in the 2nd T20I but didn’t get the opportunity to bat. Check why Gautam Gambhir Slams Virat Kohli for Dropping Suryakumar Yadav.

    Suryakumar Yadav and Virat Kohli
    Suryakumar Yadav and Virat Kohli

Former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja has reckoned that the Virat Kohli-led team-management is not utilizing the destructive prowess of all-rounder Hardik Pandya properly.

“I feel some players are not playing in their ideal positions. For example, I am a big fan of how Hardik Pandya plays his game. When he came out to bat, look at the England bowlers who had overs left. Archer, Wood, and an over or two of someone else.

“There is no team who have five frontline bowlers. You will always have one bowler who’s slightly weaker than the others. India needs to understand which batsman will give them the maximum returns when they come up against a particular bowler.

    Hardik Pandya
    Hardik Pandya

“You know the pace at which Hardik Pandya bats when he’s having a good day. You have to think whether you want to up the ante when your batsmen are facing Archer or Wood, or when someone like Jordan or Sam Curran is bowling. That’s why I feel India’s current batting lineup isn’t in their best interest,” Jadeja told Cricbuzz.

Hardik Pandya batted at the 6th spot in the first game and struggled against the raw pace of Archer and Wood, eventually managing a lackluster 21-ball 19.

India needs to win the 4th T20I match of the 5 matches T20I series to stay alive in the tournament. Apart from this BCCI announced that the remaining matches of ongoing India vs England series will be played behind closed doors owing to the rapid spread of COVID19 in India.
