Mitchell Marsh Suspends Bowling Options Ahead of England T20Is

Mitchell Marsh is not expected to bowl in the three-match T20I series on Australia’s tour of England in 2024. Marsh will remain focused solely on his role as a batter in the T20I series and will rule out bowling and all-rounder options against England.

Marsh hasn’t bowled in international cricket since suffering a hamstring tear during the IPL 2024 season earlier this year.

Australia’s squad is packed with all-rounder Cameron Green, Aaron Hardie, and Marcus Stoinis for seam bowling.

“I’m sort of just building,” Marsh said. “I don’t tend to bowl myself too much, is the honest answer, and we’re lucky that we’ve got plenty of bowling options within our team, so we’ll see how we go. My bowling’s on line: whether or not I bowl, we’ll wait and see. We’ve got heaps of options. I’m always building something.”

Mitchell Marsh did not bowl during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies, where the team was knocked out the Super 8 stages.

Australia’s tour of Scotland 2024 against Scotland marked Australia’s first appearance in the shortest format since the major tournament.

Australia made a clean sweep 3-0 over Scotland and opting for a win in England. While reflecting on Australia’s exit from T20 World Cup 2024 after the side’s defeat against Afghanistan and India, Marsh said, “It feels like a lifetime ago now, that T20 World Cup.”

“It was just disappointment: we went there with the hope of winning it, like every other team did, and unfortunately, we didn’t play our best cricket at the right time. In tournament play, that’s what you rely on…there’s a lot of cricket to be played between now and the next World Cup [in 2026] but hopefully I’m there.”

The first match of the T20I series between Australia and England will be played on September 11 at The Ageas Bowl.

Craig McMillan Excited By New Zealand’s Chances in Women’s T20 World Cup 2024

After Blackcaps announced the New Zealand squad for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, the side’s assistant coach Craig McMillan said he is excited about the upcoming ICC tournament.

The Blackcaps have announced the T20 World Cup squad who will be traveling to UAE for the 20 overs showcase at the end of this month.

On this occasion, McMillan has revealed his excitement about the upcoming tournament saying, “I think the expectations will stay within the group, but what I would say is that we’re excited about the World Cup and the matches that we have in our group.”

“We know that we probably won’t be one of the teams that are favored by many, but we’re confident in the players and the group we have and we’re really looking forward to the tournament,” he added.

McMillan joined New Zealand’s coaching group earlier this year and the Kiwi great will be beginning his new role when the Kiwis suffered a series sweep against England in both the ODI and T20Is in July.

Sophie Devine will be leading the side for the tournament which will be her last assignment as captain. Along with Bates, Devine’s performance in New Zealand’s top order will be pivotal to Kiwi’s prospects with the pair having featured in every edition of the tournament since 2009.

The duo have twice finished as runner-up at the event with New Zealand (2009, 2010) and reached the semi-finals in the 2012 and 2016 seasons. McMillan would love nothing more than to see them lift the trophy at the ninth edition of the tournament.

“When they (Devine and Bates) finish (retire), they will go down as two of the very best that have played for the White Ferns and I couldn’t think of a better way for two legends of the game in New Zealand to perhaps go out, maybe holding a trophy,”  Craig McMillan pondered.

“I like the balance we have with the youngsters learning off the experienced players that we have, but what we need is everyone doing their job to the best of their ability and if that happens, you just never know what might happen come World Cup time.”

McMillan said the team gained lots of lessons from series losses and thinks they can mix it with any opposition should they play at their best.

“I think we learnt that there’s work to be done to compete consistently with the top sides in the world and we obviously recently played England, who are certainly one of those sides that are in the top three (favourites),” Craig McMillan said.

“But also I think what we learned was there’s plenty of talent and skill in this White Ferns side and how good this New Zealand side is I think will show very soon and I’m really excited by that.”

Coming to the tournament, the first match will be played between Bangladesh and Scotland women on October 03 at Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

New Zealand women will be playing their first match against India women on October 04 at Dubai International Stadium.

AFG vs NZ One-Off Test; Rain Delays the Start of Test on Day 03

AFG vs NZ One Off Test: Persistent rain and overnight showers resulted in an early washout without the toss being held for the third straight day. The Afghanistan vs New Zealand One-Off test is scheduled to be played at Grater Noida Sports Complex Ground.

The first two days of the test were canceled due to the outfield not meeting international standards. Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) who is the home team in this match, has been offered three stadiums in Kanpur, Bengaluru, and Noida.

But they chose Noida due to logistics reasons. “The BCCI offered us three venues – Kanpur, Bengaluru, and this one. We chose to play at Greater Noida as it was most convenient in terms of logistics. It was a two-hour drive from Delhi airport,” said ACB’s international cricket manager Menhajuddin Raz.

“The venue has always been Afghanistan’s home venue. If we talk about back from 2016, we have been playing games here.”

“It is because of the rain. Yesterday also, it rained. We had a three-day game here with one of the local teams which went well. We didn’t face any issues. But when the rain started all of this happened.”

With the outfield less likely to support the playing conditions, both teams will be looking to get some match time especially New Zealand is keen as they are set to play a three-match test series against India in October-November.

Afghanistan Cricket Board has hosted 11 White ball games in the venue and they have also hosted games in Dehradun.

“We had conducted a recce four to six months back, and even the visiting team had done their recce. So there was no issue” said Raaz.

“We tried working on a solution to shift the game and they said that because of the same rain, you will not be able to, you know, actually prepare the venue for you in the coming next 24 hours.”

The last time the first three days of the test were abandoned was in 2008 which was played between New Zealand and Bangladesh at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

“Plenty of Speculation” Andrew McDonald on Steve Smith’s Batting Position in Tests

0
Steve Smith
Steve Smith (Image: X)

Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has revealed that discussions are underway regarding the fate of Steve Smith as opening batter in Tests.

He was promoted to the top order after the retirement of David Warner’s retirement earlier this year. This move has slotted in Cameron Green and Mitchell Marsh in the lineup but also has some drawbacks.

Smith has featured in two series as an opener. But he put a half-century in the day-night clash against the West Indies at The Gabba. He also struggled against the new ball in testing New Zealand conditions.

With the Border Gavaskar Trophy against India approaching, Australia has to make a huge decision on his position. Promoting Steven Smith is not appreciated by former opening batters. The likes of Aaron Finch, Matthew Hayden, and Justin Langer have all recommended that Smith be restored to his No. 4 position in the batting order.

while speaking about Steven Smith‘s position, Andrew McDonald stated that no final decision on Smith’s position.

“That’s the question on everyone’s lips, isn’t it? Whilst we’ve got an eye to it, we haven’t made any firm decisions around that one. There’s plenty of speculation around that.”

“But in the background, I’d be lying if I said the conversation wasn’t happening. There are conversations around a lot of what ifs in terms of that Test summer that is to come,” said McDonald.

Border Gavaskar Trophy

McDonald added that the New South Wales side will be kept in the loop so Smith’s preparation for BGT will align with the team plans.

“We’ll unveil everything, and we’ll let (NSW coach) Greg Shipperd know what our plans are and then we’ll see what he does with his New South Wales side should Steve Smith play Shield cricket,” he added.

Smith is one of the senior players along with Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon who could feature in the Sheffield Shield to prepare for the home season.

The head coach claimed that Captain Pat Cummins’s thoughts concerning Smith’s position will play a significant role in Smith’s position. The ace pacer is currently rested for England for the white ball series starting on September 11.

“What am I willing to share? Not a lot at this stage. All I can say is the conversation’s happening. Clearly, Patty Cummins as the captain is a big part of that, he’s rehabbing at the moment, he’s not over here (in the UK),” said McDonald.

“We’ve already had some chats in Sydney initially around what we’re thinking for the summer, and that goes right down to depth bowling and what it looks like, all those hypotheticals and what ifs that we always go through. Clearly, if we make a shift with Steve Smith, then someone else will have to go to the top,” McDonald concluded.

If Smith does play in No.4, Australia might have to sacrifice one of their top six batters to bring in an opening batter from the domestic circuit.

If they wish to persist with the same set of batters, then another makeshift opener might be the answer. Several former players have put forward Travid Head’s name for the role.

Currently, India tops the WTC points table with 6 wins in 9 matches while Australia has 8 wins in 12 matches. Coming to the test series, Australia and India will play their first test on November 22 at Optus Stadium.

Rinku Singh Selected for Second Round of Duleep Trophy

BCCI has made changes in the Duleep Trophy squads as some players left the squad for international duties with Rinku Singh being named in the India B squad for round two.

He comes in as a replacement in the squad after Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant had to withdraw following their selection for a two-match test series against Bangladesh.

With the second round matches in the Duleep Trophy starting on September 12, BCCI has revealed that Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Dhruv Jurel, Kuldeep Yadav, and Akash Deep have been named in India’s Test squad for the Bangladesh series.

Left-arm pacer Yash Dayal and Sarfaraz Khan who are part of India’s 16-member squad for the opening Test, have not been released from the Duleep Trophy duties which indicates that they will be not part of the playing 11 in Bangladesh tests.

The selectors have named Pratham Singh as a replacement for Gill, and Akshay Wadkar as a replacement for KL Rahul. Meanwhile, Rasheed will replace Jurel and left-arm spinner Shams Mulani will replace Kuldeep and Aaqib Khan will be replacing Akashdeep in the squad.

Mayank Agarwal has been named as the captain of the India A squad. However, the India C squad remains unchanged for the second round.

“Team That Plays Better Cricket” Nahid Rana Confidence Ahead of India Tests

Nahid Rana

Bangladesh fast bowler Nahid Rana is hoping for a win in the upcoming test series against India after his impressive performance against Pakistan.

Rana claimed four wickets for 44 runs in the second innings of the final test in Rawalpindi, aiding Bangladesh in securing a 2-0 series win.

Rana shared his thoughts in a video post by Bangladesh Cricket on X. “Obviously we are well prepared for the India series. We have started training. The more we are prepared, the better we will be in execution during the matches,” Rana said on X.

“India is a good team but the team that plays better cricket will win. We will see when we go there.”

Rana drew attention by bowling at speeds exceeding 150 kph during his Test debut against Sri Lanka in March. He continued to make an impact in Pakistan, picking with an early breakthrough including the wicket of Babar Azam.

“Before leaving, I had said that I wanted to achieve something for my country, and it feels great to have delivered on what was expected of me,” said Rana.

“Before leaving, I had said that I wanted to achieve something for my country, and it feels great to have delivered on what was expected of me.”

He made his first-class debut in October 2021 and quickly made a mark taking 32 wickets in the following season.

In the National Cricket League 2022-23, Rana and Sumon Khan achieved a rare feat with both taking over 30 wickets which has not been achieved by fast bowlers in 11 years in the domestic first-class tournament.

“I don’t want to be like anyone else. I want to create my own identity and be known as Nahid Rana of Bangladesh,” Rana said.

“I haven’t followed any particular bowler. I’ve watched and learned from everyone — my seniors and those I grew up watching,” he signed off.

India are top of the WTC points table for the ongoing cycle and will look to consolidate their position against the Lions. Bangladesh has secured the no.4 points table after their historic win against Pakistan.

With BCCI announcing India’s squad for the 1st test, it will be interesting to see how Bangladesh names the squad and reacts to the opponents’ team.

The first test between India and Bangladesh will be played between September 19 and 23 at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, while the second test will be played at Green Park from September 27 onwards.

The NZC has announced the New Zealand squad for women’s T20 World Cup 2024 which will be boosted by the return of fast bowler Rosemary Mair after she suffered a back injury during their home series against England in March.

Captain Sophie Devine and Suzie Bates are set to play their ninth T20 World Cup which begins in the UAE competition in October.

Rosemary Mair has 18 wickets from 24 T20Is and will bolster a pace attack comprising the experienced Lea Tahuhu,  Jess Kerr, Hannah Rowe, and Molly Penfold. The spine bowling department includes Leigh Kasperek, Melie Kerr, Fran Jonas, and Eden Carson.

with an experienced squad, the Wk-batter Izzy Gaze is the only player to have played a T20 World Cup before.

While speaking on the squad announcement, New Zealand head coach Ben Sawyer said, “I’m really pleased with this squad; I think these are our best 15 players to adapt to what will likely be varied conditions.”

“Soph [Devine] and Suze [Bates] have a huge amount of tournament experience from World Cups to franchise leagues, so we’ll certainly be leaning on that knowledge in what’s going to be a pretty intense competition.

“Rosemary’s had an unfortunate run with injury over the past few months, and she’s worked hard to be fit for this tournament. She’s proved herself as one of our key pace options and we’re excited she’s returning.”

New Zealand will tour Australia for three T20Is starting on September 19, with the same squad set to participate in the games on September 19, 22 and 24 in Mackay and Brisbane.

Meanwhile, the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 will be Sophie Devine’s last assignment as New Zealand’s T20I captain.

New Zealand will be playing warm-up games against South Africa and England on September 29 and October 01 before the start of the World Cup. They will be facing India in their first match on October 04. New Zealand has been grouped alongside Australia, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
