IPL 2021: Prithvi Shaw Clashes with DC Coach Ricky Ponting

Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting has revealed his struggle to unlock the best of Prithvi Shaw for the upcoming IPL 2021.

Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting has revealed his struggle to unlock the best of Prithvi Shaw, the Indian batting prodigy he rates as one of the most talented players he has seen.

    Ricky Ponting on Prithvi Shaw

“I’ve tried (taking Shaw under his wing) the last two years and I’ve really enjoyed working with him,” Ponting told cricket.com.au before departing for India.

“I’ve had some really interesting chats with him through last year’s IPL, just trying to break him down, trying to find out exactly what was the right way to coach him and how I was going to get the best out of him.

“But he had an interesting theory on his batting last year – when he’s not scoring runs, he won’t bat, and when he is scoring runs, he wants to keep batting all the time.

“He had four or five games where he made under 10 and I’m telling him, ‘We have to go to the nets and work out (what’s wrong)’, and he looked me in the eye and said, ‘No, I’m not batting today’.

“I couldn’t really work that out.

“He might have changed. I know he’s done a lot of work over the last few months, that theory that he had might have changed, and hopefully it has, because if we can get the best out of him, he could be a superstar player.”

Shaw’s importance to Delhi will likely be even greater in the coming weeks after captain Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of the tournament with a shoulder injury, and he certainly enters this year’s IPL in red-hot form.

He recently put together the most prolific domestic 50-over campaign ever by an Indian batsman, captaining Mumbai to the Vijay Hazare Trophy while smashing 827 runs at 165.40 including four centuries in an astonishing eight-innings stint.

Ponting had not held back in giving Shaw his opinion a few months earlier during the IPL.

“I was going pretty hard at him,” said the former Australia captain. “I was basically telling him, ‘Mate you’ve got to get in the nets. Whatever you think you’re working on, is not working for you’.”

“It’s my job as a coach to challenge someone’s preparation if they’re not getting results. So I challenged him and he stuck to his word and he didn’t practice much at all towards the back-end of the tournament, and didn’t get many runs towards the back-end of the tournament either.”

Shaw had been tipped a future star after scoring a mammoth 546 in a school game as a 14-year-old before becoming the youngest Indian to make a Test century on debut in 2018.

His batting technique has since been publicly picked apart by the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Ponting, who nonetheless believes Shaw is capable of reaching his immense potential.

“Maybe (his training habits) have changed for the better, because (his success) won’t just be for the Delhi Capitals, I’m sure you’ll see him play a lot of cricket for India as well in the coming years,” said Ponting.

“He’s diminutive … in the (Sachin) Tendulkar sort of mould but hits the ball incredibly powerfully off front and back foot, and plays spin really well.

“If we can get him to take that form that he’s just shown into the IPL, it just makes the balance on our Delhi Capital side so good.

“If (the penny) does drop – I’m not sure I’ve seen many more talented players than him in my whole time of playing the game.”

Shaw will play under Delhi Capitals’ new Skipper Rishabh Pant in the IPL 2021 season as their regular skipper Shreyas Iyer ruled out of the IPL 2021.

Ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, Mumbai Indians pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah showed a glimpse of how he would want the upcoming season to pan out.

Jasprit Bumrah begins training for IPL 2021

Bumrah returned to action in the IPL after missing ODIs, T20Is in the recently concluded series against England. The 27-year-old had his yorkers on target at practice as the defending champions prepared for the upcoming season.

In a video uploaded by the official Twitter handle of the Mumbai franchise on Sunday, the fast bowler can be seen nailing his yorkers by hitting a marker placed at the ‘block-hole’ length consistently. Along with the video clip, “BOOM…ED!” wrote MI as the caption for the video post.

Bumrah recently married TV presenter Sanjana Ganesan and had to miss the white-ball leg of the bilateral series against the Three Lions. Apart from being one of the key players for MI, he has also been part of their winning teams in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.

Bumrah has 109 wickets from 92 matches at an economy rate of 7.41 runs per over. He was one of the standout performers for the Mumbai franchise in their title chase in the UAE last season. He picked up 27 wickets from 15 games at an average of 6.73 per over.

Despite the rising number of Covid-19 cases across the country and especially in the state of Maharashtra. The Wankhede stadium will host 10 IPL matches this season from April 10 to 25. Those fixtures will go ahead as planned, said the secretary of Mumbai Cricket Association Sanjay Naik on Sunday.

Defending champions MI will begin their IPL campaign on April 9 in Chennai against Royal Challengers Bangalore. While the Mumbai venue will host its first IPL game of the season on April 10 between Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals.

Moeen Ali asked the Chennai Super Kings management to remove the alcohol brand logo from his jersey and the franchise agreed to the England all-rounder’s request, as per reports in the media.

But Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kasi Vishwanathan has denied reports by confirming that Moeen Ali didn’t make any request to remove the logo of an alcohol brand from his jersey.

As per several reports doing the rounds, Moeen Ali, who doesn’t drink or promote alcohol for his faith, had requested CSK franchise for the logo of SNJ 10000 to be removed from his shirt ahead of the IPL 2021.

“There has been no request made by Moeen to CSK to remove any logo,” the CSK CEO was quoted as saying in Times Now.

Michael Hussey Lauds CSK’s Current Squad

CSK bought him for a whopping Rs 7 crore in the recently held IPL 2021 auction. Earlier its batting coach Michael Hussey sounded confident of a better show after last year’s performance which saw them not reaching the play-offs first time in their history.

“I feel we have a very balanced squad that has most bases covered and with depth in most areas. The guys are in really good spirits and have been preparing extremely well, he was quoted as saying by CSK website. Hussey said CSK had a very balanced squad, adding the new recruits Moeen Ali, K Gowtham and Robin Uthappa were “excellent additions.”

“I think they are all excellent additions. Moeen is an excellent all-rounder, Robin has a lot of experience and has been a quality performer in the past and Gowtham has some genuine talent that we can look to develop further,” Hussey said.

CSK picked up six players including Ali and Gowtham at the February auction after buying top-order batsman Uthappa in a trade with Rajasthan Royals. Hussey said a good start in the forthcoming IPL would be nice because the players will then relax and play their best cricket with confidence.

“A good start would be nice because the players will then relax and hopefully play their best cricket with confidence, otherwise the pressure can build up on everyone involved,” the former Australia batsman said. Hussey said playing a block of matches would help the players settle and build confidence early in the tournament.

IPL 2021: Cheteshwar Pujara Felt Sorry for Hanuma Vihari

Chennai Super Kings’ batsman Cheteshwar Pujara felt bad that his national teammate Hanuma Vihari went unsold in the IPL 2021 auction.

In 2019, Hanuma Vihari played for SunRisers Hyderabad but has gone unsold ever since.

“Last few years, I’m the only one who has been missing out [on playing in the IPL] from the Indian team. The only guy missing out at this stage is Hanuma Vihari. I feel for him. He was previously part of the IPL. I feel that he should also be part of the IPL,” Pujara said in an interaction with ESPNCricinfo.

    Hanuma Vihari
    Hanuma Vihari

Pujara talked about getting another chance in the IPL and said that he was pleased with the development as his contribution for Team India is getting noticed.

“I’m really pleased that what I’ve done for the Indian team is noticed and I got results for that. I was told when I was picked, all the franchises clapped [in the auction room]. I feel that when you are doing something for the Indian team, people love it. They know the value I bring in. Not just the franchises, almost all my [India] team-mates were really happy for me,” the batsman added.

According to the 33-year-old, white-ball cricket is easier than red-ball cricket as Test has way lot more pressure.

“I definitely think so (on whether it is easier for someone who can tackle red-ball cricket to perform in white-ball cricket), especially the way the white ball travels.

“It is just about making the mental change. I feel that mentally if you are ready to make some adjustments, you don’t need to take a lot of pressure. In Test cricket, there is a lot of pressure; there is a price on your wicket. But in the shorter format, you just need to express yourself and play all the shots you can,” Pujara signed off.

The dream of many cricket fans has been made possible on the 10th anniversary of the World Cup win as CSK posted a video of young MS Dhoni interviewing World Cup winner Dhoni.

The YouTube video shows Dhoni meet his younger self from 2005 where the former India skipper sheds light on the years ahead for a young and shy Dhoni who has just entered the international arena.

“Thala the host and the Guest! A one of it’s kind conversation as @msdhoni from 2021 meets himself from 2005 and tells him about the secrets behind his consistency,” CSK tweeted while sharing the Gulf Oil India video.

The short conversation shows the present-day MS Dhoni talking about the final with the Dhoni of 2005.

Watch Young Dhoni interviewing WC winner Dhoni

“You’ll have to keep improving your game. And you are today batting at number 3 but you might have to bat lower down the order sometime depending on the requirements,” the former Indian skipper told the young Dhoni in ‘Gulf Pride Presents Dhoni X Dhoni’.

“So, to be mentally ready is very important. And of course, keep practising. So if you go into a situation like that, you know how to change your batting style. You have to be ahead of the game,” he further said.

“At the same time, you have to enjoy the game. And of course, there will be challenges but think of them as opportunities to prove yourself. Because whatever’s the team’s requirement that’s always your priority,” Dhoni added.

MS Dhoni led India to lift the 2011 World Cup after 28 years of long waiting. The then Indian skipper had played an exceptional knock in the finals of the mega event to see the hosts home.

The young Dhoni asks the former India captain to pick his favourite knock. “Sir, you’ve played so many ODIs and Tests but if I had to ask you to pick one favourite innings, which you think as your best innings, which one would it be?” the youngster asked.

“The World Cup finals. The joy of finishing that match was just something else,” replied Dhoni.

To which a surprised young Dhoni curious to know what happened in the 2011 World Cup final asked if India would go on to win the showpiece event.

“Your hard work is what made that innings possible. But just make one more sacrifice. All these favourites of yours — butter chicken, soft drinks, milkshakes — slowly quit them,” said the World Cup-winning Indian skipper.

The former Indian cricketer also lauded his younger self to announce his arrival on the international stage in style. “Picking up Man of the Match and Man of the Series awards in your first year. Great Stuff. And that 183 against Sri Lanka, I mean 50 overs of keeping and then batting for another 46 overs it’s not easy,” said Dhoni.

MS Dhoni announces his international retirement on August 15, 2020 after reaching UAE for the IPL tournament of the year. After facing back to back hurdles Dhoni-led CSK for the first time in IPL history fails to enter the playoff of the season.

Dhoni will lead the CSK in the IPL 2021 where the Chennai based franchise plays the first match of the season against Delhi Capitals at Mumbai on April 10, 2021.

Delhi Capitals player Axar Patel has been tested positive for COVID19 ahead of IPL 2021. The development comes close on the heels of eight members of the ground staff at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium testing positive for Covid-19. Delhi plays its first match of the season, against the Chennai Super Kings in Mumbai on April 10.

Axar Patel tested positive for COVID19

Axar Patel becomes the second player to tests positive for COVID19. Earlier KKR’s Nitish Rana has been tested COVID19 positive after his return from the Goa tour.

“Delhi Capitals all-rounder Axar Patel has tested positive for COVID-19. He had checked into the team hotel in Mumbai on March 28, 2021, with a negative report. His report from the second COVID test came positive. He is currently in isolation at a designated medical care facility. The Delhi Capitals medical team is in constant touch with Axar and ensuring his safety and well-being. We wish him a speedy recovery,” said a DC statement.

India is the fifth-worst-hit country in the world at the moment with Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, three of the six host states this season, being three of the five worst-hit states in India.

IPL 2021: Health and Safety Protocols

The BCCI’s “IPL 2021: Health and Safety Protocols” manual lays down the rules and regulations for dealing with Covid-19 cases in detail.

    • Suspected/positive cases will be immediately isolated from rest of the squad.
    • The team doctor will inform the BCCI chief medical officer immediately.
    • The local health authority will be immediately notified of the positive RT-PCR test result.
    • The case will be managed in close coordination with accredited hospitals and treatment centers equipped with Covid-19 testing and treatment equipment.
    • All concerned cases shall be dealt with as per the guidelines set by the government applicable to that particular area.
    • Contact tracing must commence immediately. All individuals who have been in close contact with the case during the previous 48 hours starting from the time of collection of the sample which resulted in a positive test, will be isolated and tested. All casual contacts in the last 48 hours starting from the time of collection of the sample which resulted in a positive test, will also be isolated and tested immediately.
    • All staff handling positive cases must mandatorily wear a full PPE kit (goggles, face shield, N95 mask, gloves, coverall/gowns, headcover, and shoe covers) while handling a suspected/positive Covid-19 case.

This aside, in case of asymptomatic people or ones with mild symptoms, the protocol is for the person to be isolated in a designated area outside the bio-secure environment for a minimum of ten days from the day on which the sample which resulted in the positive report was taken.

Umesh Yadav Reveals How long Will He Play for Team India

    Umesh Yadav
    Umesh Yadav

India fast bowler Umesh Yadav believes he can go on for a couple of years more as he aims to help his team clinch the World Test Championship title in June when India takes on New Zealand in the final in Southampton.

Umesh Yadav Focus to Play for India

Umesh Yadav will play for Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2021. Umesh Yadav was bought by Delhi Capitals in IPL 2021 Auction for Rs 1 crore.

“I am 33 now and I know that I can mostly pull my body for another two or three years, and there will be some youngsters who will be arriving (to play). I feel this is just healthy because it ultimately ends up benefiting the team.

    Umesh Yadav
    Umesh Yadav

“When you have five or six fast bowlers on a tour of four or five Tests, you can play each one of them for two games to help reduce their stress and workload, so it helps that pack (of fast bowlers) play for longer,” Umesh told ESPNcricinfo.

Siraj gets in as Competition for Umesh

Despite being a regular in the Test squad over the last three years, 33-year-old Yadav now faces stiff competition due to the emergence of Mohammed Siraj, who has impressed one and all.

Siraj made his Test debut during the same Australia series and bagged 13 wickets in three matches, at an average of 29.54. He ended the Test series as the highest wicket-taker for India, a remarkable feat.

    Siraj
    Siraj

His achievements during the Australia Tour earned him a call-up to the England Test series, which was heavily dominated by the spinners, and he picked up three wickets in two Tests.

Umesh has bowled more at home than overseas but feels experience helps him to perform in all conditions.

“So I haven’t played much overseas, and I haven’t had much experience of those kinds of wickets. But I’ve played a fair amount of Tests so far and learned with experience how a particular surface will behave.

“As far as the rest of my career is concerned, thank god that relatively I haven’t had that many injuries. And that is satisfying as a fast bowler, because once a fast bowler starts getting injured (regularly), he tends to start struggling, which ultimately reduces his (playing) life,” said Yadav.

“After an injury, there is the recovery, and then you need a rehab, which consumes a lot of time, which you can never get back. But I have lost very little time to injury periods, which has kind of helped me lengthen my career. So I haven’t had to compromise a lot on my pace as well,” he added.

Yadav interests to play in WTC

Yadav did return to the squad for the final two Tests against England at home but didn’t get a game. Given that he doesn’t play limited-overs cricket for India, Umesh can’t wait to make a contribution in the World Test Championship final.

    ICC World Test Championship
    ICC World Test Championship

“We have worked really hard to get there, and with players like me who are not regulars in white-ball cricket, it is this that we consider our World Cup. If I am able to perform well in that match and we end up winning, being world champions will forever be a memory,” he said.

“The match is in England, where swing and seam are important, so I definitely see myself in the playing XI for that game,” said Yadav.

The Nagpur-born pacer has played 48 Tests over the span of nine years and his game-time has been affected by frequent injuries. He is currently a part of arguably India’s best-ever pace attack, sharing the responsibility with Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammad Shami.

IPL 2021: Kevin Pietersen Comes With an Idea for IPL Schedule Problem

Former England captain Kevin Pietersen wants cricket boards across the globe to not schedule any international games when the ‘biggest show in town’, the Indian Premier League(IPL) is being held.

    Kevin Pietersen on IPL Schedule

While many current England players claim that they have heavily benefited from playing in the IPL, Pietersen has ‘simply’ floated an idea for the cricket boards to not schedule any matches when the cash-rich league is being held.

“Cricket boards need to realise that the @IPL is the biggest show in town. DO NOT schedule ANY international games whilst it’s on. V v v simple!,” Pietersen tweeted.

Some of the English players are reportedly in a dilemma about their participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as their two-Test home series against New Zealand starts on June 2, a day after the conclusion of the upcoming IPL.

If the teams they represent reach the business end of the T20 league, they either have to miss the finale or skip the national duty.

Though Pakistan and South Africa are currently locking horns, Pietersen might have hinted towards New Zealand’s tour of England which will likely clash with the IPL playoffs.

England is scheduled to play a two-match Test series against New Zealand, starting June 2 while the IPL final will be played on May 30.

In March, England all-rounder Sam Curran had admitted that if CSK fails to qualify for the playoffs in IPL, he will likely be available for the New Zealand series.

Director of the England and Wales Cricket Board(ECB), Ashley Giles has already said that the ECB will not force the English players to prefer national duty over IPL.

This year, 14 England cricketers, including white-ball skipper Eoin Morgan, Jos Buttler, Stokes, Johnny Bairstow, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Sam Billings, Liam Livingstone, and Dawid Malan are contracted to play in the IPL.

The 5 times defending champions Mumbai Indians led by Rohit Sharma face the Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore at Chennai on April 9, 2021.

8 groundsmen who work at the facility of the iconic Wankhede stadium in Mumbai have tested positive for Covid19. With a week ahead for the starting of the IPL 2021 the results start to raise the question regarding the successful completion of the IPL 2021.

8 groundsmen at Wankhede stadium Tests COVID19 Positive

The IPL 2021 is scheduled to kickstart from April 9 with its opening match between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore at Chennai. The first match at Wankhede stadium is played on the very next day(10-April) between Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals.

Though the matches are scheduled to play behind closed doors the possibility of the spread is unpredictable owing to its vigour spread.

“We will make arrangement for the ground staff at the stadium itself with immediate effect. We have many rooms at the ground where they can be housed,” said an MCA official. “There will be no threat to IPL matches at the Wankhede. We will be ready by the time the tournament starts,” he added.

MCA were also in talks with Wankhede curator Ramesh Mhamunkar whether he needs additional staff to get the ground ready. MCA has in-house ground staff at their facility at BKC and Kandivili who can be called over to help with the preparation for the duration of the tournament.

Despite the COVID-19 outbreak at its worst in Maharashtra and the state government considering reintroducing severe restrictions, the BCCI has been preparing for the games in Mumbai, to be played without spectators.

Nitish Rana Tested Positive for COVID19

In addition to this KKR player Nitish Rana has been tested positive for COVID19 post his GOA tour. Rana currently believed to be in quarantine, isolated from the rest of the KKR camp.

Rana, who featured in both the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy for Delhi, is said to have returned a positive test result two days ago after having returned from a holiday in Goa.

The reports are unconfirmed and there has been no official word on the matter, but newspaper ‘Dainik Bhaskar’ reports that Rana is currently in isolation, away from the rest of the KKR camp, and is being monitored by doctors in a hotel in Mumbai.

Indian former cricketer Mohammad Kaif feels captaincy will lead Rishabh Pant to another level. Owing to Shreyas Iyer’s injury Delhi Capitals appoints Rishabh Pant as their new skipper for the IPL 2021.

    Kaif Praises Rishabh Pant

Many cricket lovers criticize this move from DC as the team have experienced players likes of Steve Smith, R Ashwin –  who have the experience of handling captaincy in IPL.

But many cricketers including Kaif feels that Pant will move to the next level in the cricket carrier with the pressure of captaincy.

“I remember the first time I saw Rishabh play. We had a middle practice, and he was hitting bowlers like Chris Morris, Nathan Coulter-Nile and lot of other bowlers everywhere and then I asked Rahul Dravid (then Delhi franchise mentor), “Who is this guy?” And now we all know who Rishabh Pant is and I actually said back then that he’s probably the best young player I have ever seen. We have seen what he does on a regular basis in the India shirt and also in the Delhi shirt. I am really happy for him and he will go from strength to strength,” said Billings.

He is also excited about Delhi Capitals’ chances in the Indian Premier League this season. “It’s great to be back at the IPL. There are a great group of players and the DC camp has been very welcoming. I am very excited to be here,” he said in a Delhi Capitals release.

“I love the IPL. It’s one of the best competitions in the world and the buzz around the IPL is something that you can’t get anywhere else in the world, so I am just looking forward to playing in the tournament again. My game has improved a lot since I last played for Delhi. Hopefully, we can kick-on as a group and win the competition this year,” he said.

Notable for the first time in IPL history Delhi Capitals advanced to play the finals in IPL 2020 under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy. The IPL 2021 is scheduled to kick start from April 9, 2021 with the opening match between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore at Chennai.

Gambhir Points the Reason for India Failing to Win an ICC Trophy

Gautham Gambhir scored 97 runs in the 2011 World Cup Finals
Gautham Gambhir scored 97 runs in the 2011 World Cup Finals

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir believes that winning an ICC trophy should never be the benchmark for judging any team, rather the consistency of winning overseas can be a factor.

    Gambhir on Winning ICC trophy

Gambhir pointed out that India won the 2011 World Cup but, after that, the team suffered a humiliating defeat on overseas tours of England and Australia in the same year.

India may not have tasted success in an International Cricket Council (ICC) tournament since they won the Champions Trophy in 2013, but they have registered historic series win twice in Australia while also reaching the inaugural finale of the ICC World Test Championship.

Gambhir quoted New Zealand’s example, saying they have never won an ICC trophy but are still a fabulous and great team.

Watch India vs Sri Lanka 2011 WC Finals

“You can’t judge a side by just winning an ICC trophy and the reason is we won the World Cup in 2011 and in the same year we got thrashed in England, we got thrashed in Australia so winning an ICC trophy is not a benchmark for being a good or a bad side. New Zealand has never won an ICC trophy, they are still a fabulous team,” Gautam Gambhir told Sports Today.

“Just by judging the team that hasn’t won an ICC trophy or has won an ICC trophy should never be the benchmark. It’s about consistency whether we can go overseas, dominate the opposition, try and win convincingly and be a consistent side,” Gambhir added.

“When I was growing up I always wanted to be part of the World Cup-winning team. I was very fortunate that I was part of two World Cup-winning teams. There are people who have achieved some great things for India cricket have not been part of those World Cup-winning teams, and you practice for years and years for these moments,” Gambhir further said.

Gautam Gambhir praises the 2011 WC winning team

Gambhir further put focus on the performances of Zaheer Khan, Yuvraj Singh, Sachin Tendulkar etc. To those labelling the MS Dhoni six as the ‘one that won India the World Cup’, Gambhir said that Yuvraj Singh would’ve won ‘six World Cups’ (for hitting six sixes against England in a single over at the 2007 T20 World Cup).

Can you forget Zaheer Khan’s contribution? His first spell in the final, where he bowled three successive maidens? Can you forget what Yuvraj Singh did against Australia? Or for that matter, Sachin Tendulkar’s hundred against South Africa? Why do we keep remembering about one-six?.

Yuvraj Singh bagged player of the tournament award in World cup 2011
Yuvraj Singh bagged player of the tournament award in World cup 2011

If one six can win you the World Cup, then I think Yuvraj Singh should have won six World Cups for India, because he hit six sixes in an over (against England in 2007 World T20 at Durban). No one talks about Yuvraj. He was the ‘Man of the Tournament’ in 2007 (officially, Shahid Afridi was) & the 2011 World Cups. And we keep talking about that one six.”

Gambhir himself played a huge role in the team’s triumph at the final. The opening batsman scored 97 and stitched an important century partnership with Dhoni. There are fans who reckon his knock in the final as the ‘most memorable’, Gambhir said that the fact that people come up to him and say ‘thank you for the World Cup’, is his biggest achievement.

Chennai Super Kings(CSK) has finally broken their silence over Josh Hazlewood opting out at the last minute and said that the side was not prepared for it and no decision over his replacement has been taken as yet.

CSK on Josh Hazlewood Ruled out

“It is a sudden development and we were not prepared for it. We will look at various options before arriving at a decision. But we have our bases covered. So if the team management feels we don’t need a replacement, we might not seek one,” a senior CSK official told the Times of India on Thursday.

Amid the pandemic, Hazlewood has been in the bubble for 10 months already and hence was looking for a break and spend a couple of months in Australia before getting back in action.

“It’s been a long 10 months in bubbles and quarantine at different times, so I decided to have a rest from cricket and spend some time at home and in Australia in the next two months,” Hazlewood was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

CSK was in a similar scenario last season when veterans Harbhajan Singh and Suresh Raina pulled out of the tournament at the last-minute citing ‘personal reasons.’ The franchise suffered as they could not make the playoffs for the first time ever and to make things worse – they finished last.

It would be interesting to see if CSK opts for a replacement. As per the CSK official, they have their bases covered and if that is the case – they may not get a replacement.

Hazlewood is not the first cricketer this year to have pulled out from IPL 2021. Earlier on Wednesday, SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) all-rounder Mitchell Marsh had also pulled out of IPL 2021. Check the full list of players who withdraw from the IPL 2021.
