Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli on Tuesday acknowledged AB de Villiers ability after the South African batsman hammered an unbeaten 75 off 42 balls to help the Bengaluru franchise beat Delhi Capitals.

Virat Kohli praises AB de Villiers

“AB doesn’t like me saying this, but he hasn’t played competitive cricket for 5 months, but if you look at him bat it doesn’t feel like he doesn’t play international cricket anymore. Hats off to him, keeps doing it again and again for us,” said Kohli after the match.

“Such an asset for us. I’ll say this again (smiles). He hasn’t played for five months, just watch that innings,” added Kohli.

De Villiers, on his part, said that the key to performing is managing oneself. The former South African captain said that he likes to manage himself.

“Once you’re into the tournament, it’s more about managing yourself, make sure you’re fresh every game. You can’t go into the game feeling fatigued,” added de Villiers.

“I’ve really done some work at home and we have treadmills in the room. I’ve done all the work and now it’s all about being as fresh as I can when I go out to bat.”

He called his shot against Kagiso Rabada over mid-wicket the best of his innings.

“The shot over extra cover was certainly one of the best shots, but the one over midwicket off KG was my best one. I don’t often get him away, but I’m happy I managed to get him away for that one,” he added.

In the game against Dellhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bangalore had a trilling over victory in the last over in a difference of 1 run. Delhi Capitals skipper Rishabh Pant on joining hands with Hetmyer put his all effort to drag the team to win the match.

RCB with their 5th victory of the league match tops the IPL 2021 points table with 10 points.

We will look to bowl first. The wicket looks dry, so we want to bowl before the dew sets in. Nothing much to talk about the previous game. We should have won the game before the Super Over. Ishant is playing in place of Ashwin.

    Virat Kohli | RCB Skipper

We would have bowled as well. Dew is a big factor here. I think it came as early as the first innings. So we got to set a nice foundation, need to have wickets in hand and go hard. We need to keep that intent going. Saini makes way for Rajat Patidar, he will bat at 3 to give us a bit more batting. Daniel Sams replaces Dan Christian.

    Playing XI

I worked out at home and during the quarantine in the hotel room, and now it’s just about managing ourselves throughout the tournament and being fresh when we go out there to play.

We have some experienced heads and some young Indian bowlers who have done well internationally recently. They come in with a lot of confidence. Myself, Virat and Maxi chip in with some help when we can too. I forced myself to say a bit more behind the stumps, thanks to Yuzi who urged me to do it.

IPL 2021: Jadeja Explains How MSD Guided him During Record 37 run over

Jadeja smashed 37 runs off an over bowled by Harshal Patel in CSK vs RCB league match of IPL 2021
Jadeja smashed 37 runs off an over bowled by Harshal Patel

The star India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja spilled the beans on how skipper MS Dhoni helped him hit 37 runs which included five sixes in the last over off Harshal Patel at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday (April 25).

Jadeja on Record 37 runs over

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja who is coming into competitive cricket after a layoff felt the heat in Mumbai physically by the time the last over of the CSK innings arrived. Jadeja revealed that Dhoni told him that Harshal would look to bowl outside the off-stump.

“I was looking to hit hard in the last over, Mahi bhai told me he (Harshal) will be bowling somewhere outside the off-stump and I was ready for that,” he said at the post match presentation.

A modest Jadeja – who was named the man-of-the-match for his all-round show against table-toppers Royal Challengers Bangalore – said he was ‘lucky’ to have connected the balls from the middle of the bat.

“Luckily I connected with everything and we managed to reach 191, which was crucial over from our side. I knew I had to score some runs if I do get on strike,” he added.

Jadeja, who missed the entire England series after breaking a finger in India’s third Test against Australia earlier this year, also felt grateful that he could contribute towards the victory of the side. He admitted that he has been working really hard on his fitness and felt lucky that it paid off.

“Enjoyed a lot, when you contribute for your team in a winning match, it means a lot. I have been working a lot on my fitness, skill and everything else, luckily, it paid off today. It’s tough as an all-rounder, you’ll have to do well in all departments – while training, I don’t do all the three things (batting, bowling and fielding practice) on the same day. I work on my skills one day and my fitness on the next day – that’s how I manage my workload,” he further added.

    Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth

Cricket is the first discipline to announce qualifying teams for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games as the sport makes a landmark re-entry to the prestigious multi-sport event scheduled from 28 July to 8 August next year.

Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and England have all qualified for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Qualified Cricket teams for Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth

The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) made the announcement on Monday as women’s cricket features in the Games for the first time in 22 editions and cricket for only the second time ever, the first occasion being a men’s ODI competition in Kuala Lumpur in 1998, which was won by South Africa.

The six qualifiers who join home team England in the eight-team Twenty20 competition are Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and a country from the West Indies. They have secured qualification as a result of their standings in the MRF Tyres ICC Women’s T20I Team Rankings on 1 April 2021.

As per the qualification process, the winner of a designated Qualifying event will determine which country from the Caribbean region gets to participate as athletes will be representing their individual countries and not the West Indies as they would at ICC events.

The last participating team will be decided through a Qualifying tournament to be held by 31 January 2022, details of which will be announced in due course.

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games will see 4,500 athletes from 72 nations and territories compete across 11 spectacular days of sport. Birmingham 2022 will be the first major multi-sport event in history to award more medals to women than men.

The Commonwealth Games cricket tournament will take place at the iconic Edgbaston Stadium, with tickets set to go on sale later this year.

ICC Acting Chief Executive Geoff Allardice

“We are incredibly proud and excited to be part of Birmingham 2022 and it is a fantastic opportunity for us to continue to grow the women’s game globally.

“We are committed to maintaining the momentum that saw 86,174 fans packed into the Melbourne Cricket Ground for the final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup last year and Birmingham 2022 gives us another global stage on which to showcase the women’s game.

“On behalf of the ICC and its Members, I thank the Commonwealth Games Federation for their support and look forward to seeing some superb cricket at Edgbaston.”

Commonwealth Games Federation President Dame Louise Martin

“It is an exciting milestone to be announcing the first teams to qualify for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Cricket is a sport that is synonymous with the Commonwealth and we are so excited to have it back in the Games for the first time since the men’s competition at Kuala Lumpur 1998.

“The debut of women’s T20 cricket will be a historic moment for Commonwealth Sport and a wonderful showcase for women’s sport across the world. Congratulations to the teams that have now booked their spot to compete at the iconic Edgbaston Stadium for what I am certain will be an unforgettable tournament.”

    England captain Heather Knight

“We’re really excited about hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2022 and it offers a big opportunity for women’s cricket, both in England and Wales and around the world.

“With direct entry into the competition confirmed, we’re one step closer to being on the pitch in Birmingham, and the prospect of potentially winning a medal is something that will be at the back of our minds across the next 12 months.

“It’s going to be a fantastic competition, a real chance to showcase the women’s game to a huge audience and it’s one we’re thrilled to be taking part in.”

“It’s great to be confirmed a place in the Commonwealth Games. We are raring to go, confident of doing well after having made the final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia last year.

“It is an awesome opportunity for both the women’s game and cricket to make a mark at the prestigious multi-discipline Games and we hope to return with loads of good memories.”

We’re going to bowl first. Excellent ground and good outfield, seems a good surface. We’re going with the same team. We’re looking to make a big step forward today. We believe in the guys within the squad and the playing XI. Moving forward, we’ll see a lot more depth from our squad. I think there is only way to go (from here). Getting on a losing streak can hurt a bit. We have the opportunity to turn it around and we know it can change quickly.

    KL Rahul | PBKS Skipper

It’s a new venue and new pitch, important we get off to a good start. That (crowd) would have been lovely but it’s important that our country fights back from this. Games like that (win over MI) helps us a lot, difficult wicket to chase and glad that me and Chris could finish it off. Such wins bring the group together. He (Gayle) keeps things light in the dressing room.

Arshdeep Singh in the followed over dismissed Narine for duck. PBKS as expected made the early wickets but KKR have a strong middle order which could set as a game changing moment.

As expected Rana and Eoin Morgan made a much-needed partnership. This duo added 60+ runs partnership before losing their next wicket. In the 11th over Hooda dismissed Tripathi for 41 runs and breaks the partnership.

Wins haven’t been easy to come by. Have worked incredibly hard. Today, along with a bit of luck, the performance was very impressive particularly with the ball upfront. When the wicket’s like that – from the 12th over of our innings, the ball was sliding on.

Only his second game this season (Mavi). The match-up against Gayle was favourable. He bowled well in the last game and started well here. For him to make an impact is huge, credit to him.

The advantage we have over most spinners is that our spinners are variation bowlers. They don’t rely on drift and turn. They control their lengths well and rely on a tiny amount of turn and today they were exceptional.

Lot of time to go in the tournament. Hopefully today can kick-start something for us. Certainly think it’s challenging and it does have to be managed for players, coaching staff.

When you consider the horrific nature of what’s happening outside the bubble, we try and lend our support and encouragement for everything that’s going on not only in India but around the world.

If you’re going out stay safe, wear a mask, social distance. We’ve seen first hand at home how devastating it can be. On behalf of KKR we wish everyone well. Ultimately if we stick together we can beat this thing.

After losing the match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 69 runs on Sunday, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain Virat Kohli was fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate.

Virat Kohli fined with 12 lakh

“Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 match against Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on April 25.

As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences, Mr Kohli was fined Rs 12 lakh.”

The IPL organisers took a note of matches slipping beyond the scheduled finish time in the last few seasons and made sure they came up with strict regulations when it came to over-rates.

According to IPL 2021 Code of Conduct, the minimum over-rate in the 14th season should be 14.1 overs per hour, ignoring the time taken for strategic time-outs. In uninterrupted matches, the BCCI wants teams to finish bowling their quota of 20 overs within 90 minutes.

Kohli will incur a fine of 24 lakh if his team is found to have a slow over-rate a second time; additionally, each member of his team will be fined 6 lakh and 25 percent of their match fee.

For all subsequent over-rate offences during the competition, the captain will be fined 30 lakh and banned from playing the team’s next league match. Each member of the team will be fined 12 lakh and 50 percent – whichever is lesser.

CSK posted 191/4 after winning the toss and opting to bat first where Ravindra Jadeja took all the credit for his 62 not out off 28 balls which included 5 sixes in the final over from Harshal Patel.

In return, RCB could manage only 122 for the loss of 9 wickets in 20 overs. Ravindra Jadeja took three key wickets iWashington Sundar, Glenn Maxwell and AB de Villiers which bags the CSK their 4th victory of the tournament.

Kane Richardson and Adam Zampa has been pulled out of IPL 2021 season

RCB players Adam Zampa and Kane Richardson have decided to pull out of the ongoing IPL 2021 tournament amid personal reasons.

Adam Zampa and Kane Richardson Opt-Out of IPL 2021

RCB official twitter handling confirmed the news by quoting “Official Announcement: Adam Zampa & Kane Richardson are returning to Australia for personal reasons and will be unavailable for the remainder of #IPL2021. Royal Challengers Bangalore management respects their decision and offers them complete support. #PlayBold #WeAreChallengers”

A few hours before this, another Australian, Rajasthan Royals pacer Andrew Tye, left midway from the league as he feared getting “locked out” of his own country in the wake of a Covid-19 surge in India.

Virat Kohli led Royal Challengers Bangalore are third in the table with four wins from five matches. While Richardson featured in one game in IPL 2021, Zampa hasn’t been able to make it to the eleven. While leg-spinner Zampa was bought for Rs 1.5 crore, RCB spent Rs 4 crore to buy pacer Richardson at the IPL players auction.

These two are not the first to opt out of the IPL 2021 season which begins to play under a strict bio-secure bubble condition. International players start to pull out of the IPL 2021 season even before it starts and stays with their valuable family.

International players faces a period of isolation when they travel to other countries to get part in the games. Thus this makes them mentally fatigue and reduces their mental health.

Many cricket experts and players have spoken about the impact of the biosecure bubble condition once players start to feel the negative impact of the biosecure conditions.

We are gonna bat first. I think the wicket looks slightly drier. There’ll be less dew today because of the weather. We are not going to judge ourselves on batting and bowling, we are gonna judge ourselves as a fielding unit. We are just trying to do the same thing in each and every match and it’s paying off well for us. One change. We have Axar coming in for Lalit.

    David Warner | SRH Skipper

We have been batting second the whole time, so I don’t think it really matters. The way Kane and Jonny finished off the game last game was that we should have done previously. Obviously, the experienced heads in the middle, we were able to do that.

We bowled well, that was the most important thing and the most pleasing thing. Unfortunately, Bhuvi’s pulled up, bit sore. We have got Suchith coming in for him. That’s what we feel is best team to play against these guys.

Each wicket is pretty much the same. We have to assess here with the ball first and then chase down whatever they set.

    Playing XI

    Delhi Capitals(DC)

Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, Steven Smith, Rishabh Pant(w/c), Shimron Hetmyer, Marcus Stoinis, Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kagiso Rabada, Amit Mishra, Avesh Khan.

    Delhi Capitals(DC) Batting

Prithvi Shaw and Dhawan gets into lead the DC while Khaleel Ahmed opens the bowling attack.

Shaw starts to show off with a triple boundary off the very first three deliveries. Shaw and Dhawan become the best opening partnership for DC. This duo added 81 runs for their first wicket.

At the end of the 10 overs, DC scored 80 runs for no wicket loss. In the 11th over Rashid Khan breaks the partnership by dismissing Dhawan for 28 runs. In the followed over J Suchith dismissed Shaw via a run-out and sent the dangerous player out of the yard for 53 runs.

At the end of the 15th over DC scored 115 runs 2 wickets loss. With PAnt and Steve Smith’s partnership, DC Scored 159 runs for 4 wickets loss at the em=nd of the 20 overs.

    Sunrisers Hyderabad(SRH) Batting

David Warner and Bairstow gets into lead the SRH while Rabada opens the bowling attack on behalf of DC.

Though the destructive duo starts the game as expected in the 4th over bowled by Ashwin David Warner got dismissed by a misjudged run out and walks to the pavilion after scoring 6 runs.

Kane Williamson the man in form gets into join hands with Jonny. But Avesh Khan in the 6th over dismissed Bairstow for 38 runs and loads pressure over the chasing side.

Kane Williamson struggled to make a partnership and drags SRH to tie the match by leveling the score. Which results in the first Super Over over match of the IPL 2021.

    Super Over

    Sunrisers Hyderabad(SRH) Batting

While everyone expects Jonny Bairstow in the yard it’s Kane Williamson and David Warner gets into lead the SRH in the Super over.

SRH only managed to score 7 runs off the super over.

    Delhi Capitals(DC) Batting

To chase down the target of 8 runs Dhawan and Pant gets into the crease. Dhawan with a single of the last delivery made DC to win the super over match.

It was a good wicket in the first six overs and then it slowed down, but it was fine. I felt the wicket was behaving a bit slower, the spinners were bowling well. 160 was good enough to defend, but a close game.

I am just doing all those stuff I have worked with. It’s helping me right now, so I think I should continue that. I didn’t think about it (Super Over) but Williamson played fantastic. He played a really good knock.

Axar bowled really well in the Super Over. I wasn’t there, I knew Shikhar bhai and Pant would go for sure because Rashid was going to bowl for sure. So, they wanted Pant and Shikhi to go and hit.

We will bat first. Heat is a factor and the wicket may slow down. It’s not about keeping anyone happy, we have tinkered with our batting order a bit. Yes, you’ll always complain if you have got enough batting or not.

Most we can do is give everyone exposure but nobody is guaranteed of it. It’s a day game, so it’s not something we’re used to as we mostly play evening games. Spinners may come more into play. You have to be critical of your length. Two changes – Moeen not fit, Ngidi out – Bravo and Tahir come in.

    Virat Kohli | RCB Skipper

We would have bowled first as well. It’s a good pitch. We played here the last game as well. Stayed even throughout. We thought that whatever the bowlers can extract could happen in the first innings. So we have stacked up our bowling options.

Richardson makes way for Christian, Saini comes in for Shahbaz. The reason why we have won games is because we have executed well. You can’t keep thinking about what other teams are doing. We have planned well and executed so far.

    Chennai Super Kings(CSK) Batting

After decided to bat first Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad get in to lead SK while RCB’s Siraj opens the bowling attack. RCB seeks to pick the early wickets in order to avoid a massive opening partnership as they have witnessed the deadly partnership in the KKR vs CSK match.

But the CSK openers continued their aggressive batting style in this match also. The duo added an impressive opening partnership by scoring 74 runs for the first wicket. CSK openers maintain an impressive 8+ run rate.

It’s Chahal who made the first wicket for RCB by dismissing Gaikwad for 33 runs. As expected Raina gets in to join hands with Faf. At the end of the 10 overs, CSK scored 83 runs for 1 wicket loss.

CSK will definitely seek to make a destructive batting style with 9 more wickets in hand. With a steady movement, CSK crossed 100 runs in the 13 over.

Harshal Patel makes crucial wickets in the next over by dismissing the long stand Faf and Raina in back-to-back deliveries. The 14th over suddenly turns the CSK’s hope upside down.

Still, CSK have their key players on the list. Jadeja and Rayudu join hands and expected to continue the rhythm of the CSK’s aggressive batting. But the duo added just 31 runs for their next wicket where Rayudu walks to Pavillion after scoring 14 runs.

The much-awaited movement for CSK gets in execution as MSD walks to the crease to join hands with Jadeja. It seems Sir Jadeja takes the whole game in his hand and starts to shower the Mumbai ground with boundaries and Sixes of the last over. Jadeja scored 37 runs off the last 6 balls.

Jadeja with an impressive quick fire of 62 runs from 28 deliveries leads CSK to score 191 runs for 4 wickets loss at the end of the 20 overs.

    Royal Challengers Bangalore(RCB) Batting

Chasing a target of 191 runs may be a difficult task but not for RCB who have an outstanding batting line up which includes Virat, Padikkal, ABD, and Maxwell.

But for CSK’s counterpart, they too pack with match-winning bowlers. It will be an Alpha vs Alpha match for the IPL fans. Virat Kohli and Padikkal get into the crease to lead RCB.

CSK needs to pack early wickets to prevent a neck-breaking situation at the death-overs. Chahar opens the bowling attack for CSK. Kohli smashed a boundary of the very first delivery and shows his confidence level off the very first delivery.

The duo starts to add massive runs and loads pressure over the CSK bowlers. At the end of the 3 overs, RCB scored 44 runs for no wicket loss. Sam Curran who usually picks the crucial wicket at a crucial time draws the first blood for the RCB by dismissing Virat Kohli for 8 runs.

Washington Sundar gets into join hands with Padikkal. In the very followed over Thakur dismissed Padikkal and makes the second wicket. Padikkal who scored a century of the last match walks to pavillion after scoring 34 runs off 15 deliveries.

Maxwell started the next over with a boundary without any pressure where RCB scored 65 runs for 2 wickets loss at the end of the powerplay. Post the powerplay MSD releases the spinners where Jadeja gets into bowl the next over and makes a wicket of the second delivery.

Jaddu dismissed Washington Sundar for 7 runs. Still, CSK bowlers need to focus on their bowling as the deadly duo gets into the crease. AB de Villiers and Maxwell are in the crease.

But Jadeja changed the game flow by dismissing Maxwell for 22 runs and loads pressure over the RCB players. Jadeja in the 10th over bowled by Tahir dismissed Christian via an outstanding runout and increases the winning percentage of CSK.

At the end of the 10 overs, RCB scored 83 runs for 5 wickets loss. The last hope of RCB, ABD gets dismissed of the very next over by Jadeja for 4 runs. Jadeja single-handedly deems to drag the victory for CSK.

Jadeja proves his worth with Bat, Ball, and fielding too. Followed players struggled to withstand the CSK’s bowling attack and wind up scoring 122 runs for 20 overs.

CSK puts an end to the RCB’s winning streak by beating RCB by 69 runs difference.

    Sanju Samson | RR Skipper

We are going to bowl because it has helped the bowlers bowling first here in these conditions. I like to appreciate the team members, management and everyone in the team, they are coping up with it really well as there are a lot of positives even after losing few key players; Jofra, Stokes and Liam just felt, we are still having a positive atmosphere and we trust our players to win matches.

We haven’t said much, in a tournament like IPL there are going to be ups and downs, it is about trusting your players and playing some good cricket. We have two changes – Jaydev Unadkat comes in for Shreyas Gopal and Jaiswal comes in for Manan Vohra.

    Eoin Morgan | KKR Skipper

We would have liked to bowl first. I think everybody would be in the same boat. We did play a game the other night where 220 seemed to be enough.

We are playing our second game at the Wankhede and we are better off knowing the conditions. The game that is played here suits our game and hopefully we can rectify them today. It was a great game of cricket.

The character the guys showed to get to the position we were in at the end was absolutely outstanding, our middle and lower order coming good in the game against a really strong side. We have one change to our line-up, Shivam Mavi comes in for Kamlesh Nagarkoti. Just a change of game plan and it is a match-up change.

The record here traditionally is seam works better than spin, we are in a unique position of having two mystery spinners who can curb that trend a little bit. Lucky to have them.

Just a clear mind (what worked for him). In the previous game with those guys going as well as they were, the mind gets cluttered. Today wasn’t the easiest wicket to bat on as you saw in both innings.

But to keep it as simple as possible with the odd change of pace. Just my turn to do well today I think. Obviously those guys are massive losses. We’ve got the right personnel in place. We have to find a way to lift ourselves.

Have to almost find a motivation and our motivation as a team is that there’s a lot of suffering going on. We’re privileged to do what we’re doing and we’ve got to keep people smiling. Had a lot of fun today on the field.

I said to Miller it’s the most fun 7 overs I’ve ever had in my career. The conditions always change, they’re always difficult against Dre Russ. Experience of playing against him has helped over the years.

IPL 2021: Ashish Nehra Praises Royal Challengers Bangalore

Indian former cricketer Ashish Nehra praises Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore(RCB) for their impressive performance in IPL 2021 so far. With a comfortable victory against Rajasthan Royals (RR) by ten wickets, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) remain the only unbeatable side in IPL 2021.

    Ashish Nehra praises RCB

The Virat Kohli-led side is proudly placed at the top of the IPL 2021 points table with eight points after winning all four games. Though the former Indian speedster Ashish Nehra seemed impressed with the Bangalore outfit’s performance, he has a piece of advice for the side.

Nehra reckoned that the franchise shouldn’t limit themselves but should experiment only after confirming a place for themselves in the top two positions in the points table. The veteran cited an example of Delhi Daredevils ( now Delhi Capitals) during the 2009 edition to back his stance of experimenting with the Playing XI.

In a conversation with Cricbuzz, former India pacer Nehra said, “Kohli, as a skipper, never take things lightly. The way they have started their campaign and won four in four, they shouldn’t limit themselves.”

Further in the interaction, Nehra reckoned that the Royal Challengers Bangalore couldn’t have gotten a better start than this in IPL 2021. He also believes that the franchise has found some talented players in the form of Devdutt Padikkal, Mohammed Siraj, Chahal and Washington Sundar.

One of the highlights of RCB’s campaign in IPL 2021 has been the equal contribution from all the players. In the past years, Kohli and AB de Villiers were the only ones who were shouldering the responsibility of the entire team. However, this time around, things have changed.

“They have found several valuable players – other than Kohli and Villiers. They should keep them in their core group. And this team has got the potential that we have seen in previous editions,” Nehra further said in the interaction.

Royal Challengers Bangalore will face the MS Dhoni led Chennai Super Kings for their next league match on 25/4/2021(Sunday) at 3:30 PM at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

The Hundred Cricket: ECB Remains with the “Wicket” Instead of “OUT”

The England and Wales Cricket Board who had earlier proposed to replace the terminology ‘wicket’ with ‘out’ for The Hundred cricket tournament The Hundred in an attempt to make it easier to understand for the newcomers to the game have since dropped the plan, according to reports.

The Hundred Cricket Remains with Wicket

The Telegraph earlier this month had reported that the governing body was considering overhauling some of cricket’s traditional terminology in an attempt to attract a new audience to the game, with ‘batters’ also possibly replacing ‘batsmen’.

The proposals were heavily criticised by cricket fans, who slammed the ‘Americanised’ words in order to pander to the desires of potential new supporters.

But now the London Evening Standard claims the traditional term of ‘wicket’ will remain in place for The Hundred Cricket tournament.

The decision, the report claims, has been taken to ensure consistency with the other shorter and longer formats of the game, with the word ‘out’ still only being used to describe the action of a batsman’s dismissal.

However, a terminology change is on the horizon, with the Player of the Match set to be named the Match Hero in the competition, while there is no confirmation either way on whether the more gender-neutral term ‘batters’ will be introduced.

Earlier this month, former Australia spinner Brad Hogg led the backlash against the potential changes to cricketing terms.

‘The Hundred changing ‘wickets’ to ‘outs’ for dismissals is a little too much. Cricket is not baseball. It’s enough the changes in formats to tamper with the terminology!’, Hogg tweeted.

    The Hundred – Team captains

The ECB were considering alterations after focus groups reportedly told competitions organisers the traditional language of cricket can be too ‘complex’ – a complaint utterly rejected by Australian Hogg and supporters on social media.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan then warned Hundred chiefs in his column in The Telegraph they must drop ‘gimmicky changes for change’s sake’.

‘I like change in cricket but saying ‘outs’ instead of wickets makes The Hundred look even more gimmicky than it already is. I can understand batsmen changing to batters in this era but I don’t really get wickets to outs. That just looks like change for change’s sake. My only worry is, what next? Will cow corner be banned so as not to upset vegans?’

Despite the potential changes, Vaughan added that he believes The Hundred can provide a product to rival the successful glamour of the Indian Premier League.

‘Cricket has to be careful not to alienate them (existing fans) too much by changing too many things for the sake of it and risk it becoming a laughing stock because I think inadvertently they have stumbled across the right tournament,’ he added.

The ECB has also collaborated with house music star Jax Jones to produce a song called ‘Feels’ for The Hundred, which was first used in an advert for the competition that was released on Wednesday.

‘The Hundred will showcase world-class sporting action on the pitch and stars from the world of entertainment off it,’ the ECB told the Standard.
