“I’ve Got an Opportunity” Liam Livingstone Targets on England’s ODI Format After Injury Woes

0

Liam Livingstone is set to prove his belief that he is an asset to any cricket team when fully fit after more than two years of being held back by injuries.

After rushing back from recovery of ankle ligament damage to feature in England’s 2022 T20 World Cup triumph, he injured his knee just a few weeks later in his lone Test appearance in Pakistan.

Struggling with form and fitness, the England cricket team had no choice but to leave Livingstone from the ODI set-up for now, with the 31-year-old being added only to England’s T20I squad for the Australia series.

Liam Livingstone picked up three wickets and also scored 37 runs off 27 balls in the first T20I match against Australia.

While he could feature in November’s ODI series in the Caribbean with Test players unlikely to be available, his chances of featuring in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan rest on his T20 form.

“I don’t really know – that’s one of my challenges,” Livingstone said. “That’s why I’m happy that I’ve got an opportunity to bat up the order [in the T20Is]. I feel like I’ve shown over the last couple of weeks, maybe a month, that the longer I get to bat in games, the more of a chance I have to affect games.

“I feel like I’ve done that in 50-over cricket as well: if you take away the World Cup, I feel like I’d done that further down the order. But it is what it is: I’m 31, I’m not going to sit here and cry about not being picked.”

“There’s plenty of cricket to be played around the world, and if I’m not involved in the ODI stuff then there’s plenty more opportunities.

“I want to play as much cricket for England as I possibly can. Unfortunately, I won’t be playing in the ODIs but it’s still not something I’m giving up on.”

“I’ve had a difficult couple of years. My body has probably let me down a little bit, and maybe I haven’t been up to scratch physically, with a couple of niggles here and there.”

He had a remarkable international career. Recalled after four years sideline, he was the undisputed star of the 2021 English summer as he hit a 42-ball century against Pakistan.

But since then he has faded and is playing for his international future this week. If England test batters had been available for the series including Ben Duckett, Harry Brook, and Jamie Smith then Livingstone’s spot have been at risk, but has been promoted to No. 4 in the 1st T20I against Australia.

“I can run around at 100 percent in the field and I can bowl and bat to the best of my ability, which is something I probably haven’t been able to do for two-and-a-half years.”

“It’s up to me to make sure I try to do as well as I can and give them a bit of a headache for the next series,” he said. “I don’t think you’ll see anybody that wants to bat lower down the order.

“I want that responsibility. I want to try to win games of cricket for England, and the higher up the order, the more chance you have of doing that. There’s less people that can play that role [at No. 6] and sometimes you’ve got to take it on the chin… [but] this is a chance for me to stake my claim.”

Livingstone is the second oldest player in England’s squad for the series after Adil Rashid. “It feels weird, but I feel really old in this team,” he said. “I’ve got to give the younger boys a steer and take a bit of pressure off them. I enjoyed the responsibility.

“There’s a bit of a fresh look, a fresh environment,” he added. “Things are going to change. That naturally happens when you bring in new players, but especially when you bring in new coaches as well. Things have felt different: it’s like a new beginning.”

England will be playing the second T20I against Australia on September 13 at Sophia Gardens.

Rashid Khan Returns to Afghanistan Squad for South Africa ODIs

The legspinner Rashid Khan who missed Ireland ODIs will be returning to the Afghanistan squad for South Africa ODIs which is scheduled to be played between 18 and 22.

Afghanistan will be missing the services of the top order batter Ibrahim Zadran who has sustained an ankle series in his left leg and will also miss the expertise of spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who is yet to fully recover from a right Phalanx sprain.

Right-handed batter Abdul Malik who had a brilliant domestic List A competition, has been called up to replace the injured Ibrahim Zadran. Darwish Rasooli who played seven T20Is has been called up for the ODI squad.

Rashid underwent back surgery after last year’s World Cup and was out of action for months where he entirely missed the series against UAE, India, and Sri Lanka.

He also withdraws from BBL, PSL, and SA20 before finally returning to action in the Ireland T20I this March. Since his return, he has played in T20s only, following up his comeback series with the IPL, T20 World Cup, MLC, the Hundred, and the Shapageeza Cricket League, Afghanistan’s domestic T20 competition.

The rest of the squad will be the previous squad that played Ireland ODIs. “Hosting South Africa for the first time in our cricketing history is a huge milestone for Afghanistan Cricket,” ACB CEO Mr. Naseeb Khan said.

“They are a top-quality side, and playing against them in an ODI series is something we are all excited about.

“Our team has shown great performances in ICC events over the past two or three years, and we are focused on making our team equally competitive in bilateral cricket.”

This will be the first meeting between the countries outside of ICC tournaments with all three games set to be hosted by ACB at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

CSA Reports Profit of R815 Million for 2023-24 Season

0
South Africa Cricket team

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has revealed a report that the board has yielded a significant turnaround in revenue for the 2023-24 fiscal year.

The South Africa board has announced a profit of R815 million for the previous year after hosting India for two tests, three ODIs, and three T20Is in December- January and benefitting from the SA20 league.

The majority shareholder in the T20 tournament, CSA has earned a profit of R54 million which boasted a double-digit growth.

CSA has reported a loss in the last three seasons 2020-21, 2021-22, and 2022-23 which collectively amounted to R538 million. The turnaround was mostly due to increased revenue derived from broadcast rights, which make up 54% of the CSA income.

Hosting the successful hosting of the 2024 U19 men’s World Cup which was moved to South Africa from Sri Lanka and generated revenue of R54 million. CSA’s total ICC disbursements for the period were R566 million up from R290 million in the previous year.

CSA is expected to enjoy another strong financial year in 2024-25, largely due to hosting India for four T20Is in November. The revenue from those games is expected to be upwards of R150 million per match. These figures highlight India’s discipline importance and the incentive other countries have to host them as often as possible.

CSA is starting to move slightly away from total dependence, but it is important to note that all six franchises are IPL affiliates.

Cricket South Africa reported a strong performance, in everything from the national teams where the men reached the semi-final of the 2023 ODI World Cup while the women beat Australia in an ODI and a T20I for the first time.

The KFC mini-cricket program, which targets children between the ages of 06 and 12 has reported a 20% increase in participation. Around 100,000 children from 2000 schools participated. The rate of progression of those players to provisional and national teams is 15%.

CSA’s AGM also marked the end of Lawson Naidoo‘s three-year tenure as CSA chairman. A new chair will be elected at a special general meeting this month. The new chair will be chosen from the independent directors and not from Presidents of Provisional unions.

Uncapped Jaker Ali Included in Bangladesh Squad for India Test Tour

0
Jaker Ali

The uncapped Jaker Ali has been brought into the Bangladesh squad for India test tour as a replacement for injured Shoriful Islam which is set to begin on September 19.

Shoriful Islam is the only change in the squad which secured a historic win against Pakistan 2-0. He suffered a groin injury during the first test against Pakistan and did not play in the second.

Taskin Ahmed, Nahid Rana, Hasan Mahmud, and Khaled Ahmed will make up the pace attack in the absence of Shoriful Islam.

With yet to make his test and ODI debut, Jaker has played 17 T20Is for Bangladesh since his debut at the Asian Games in 2023. He has played 49 FC games and averages 41.47 with four centuries.

Opening batter Mahmudul Hasan Joy missed the Pakistan tests due to a groin niggle suffered during the four-day game between Pakistan A and Bangladesh A in the lead-up to the Test series.

Shadman Islam’s impressive showing in the first test in Rawalpindi could see him keep his spot at the top alongside Zakir Hasan.

India is currently at the top of the WTC points table while Bangladesh is in the No.4 position. With BCCI announcing India’s squad for the first test, the side will be preparing for their first test since the test series against England at home.

The first test against India will begin on September 19 at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium while the second test will be played from September 27 onwards in Kanpur.

“He’s a serious cricketer” Ricky Ponting Provides Rishabh Pant Warning Ahead of Border Gavaskar Trophy

Former Australia Captain Ricky Ponting has provided Rishabh Pant warning for the side ahead of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. He also praised Wk Batter on his rise after his terrific accident and also hailed him as a match-winner.

Having worked with Rishabh Pant in Delhi’s camp in the IPL, Ponting was constantly in touch with him during the rehab. The 26-year-old sustained multiple injuries after his car crashed into the divider at the Delhi Dehradun highway.

However, Pant made a stunning comeback this year featuring in competitive cricket for the first time since his car accident during the IPL 2024 season. He was part of India’s T20 World Cup-winning campaign in June.

With India set to tour Australia for a five-match series later this year, Pant is expected to play a key role for the team in the middle order.

Rishabh Pant
Rishabh Pant (image: X)

“We’ve all seen him play and heard him in the stump mic, he’s an infectious character to have around the group. He loves his cricket, he’s a winner, that’s what he is. He doesn’t just play to make a few runs and be out there for the fun of it.”

“He must have 4 or 5 Test hundreds already and he’s got about nine 90s as well. [MS] Dhoni played for 120 Tests (90) and made 3 or 4 hundreds (6), this is how good this guy (Pant) is. He’s a serious cricketer,” said Ponting.

Ponting hailed Pant for his earlier comeback to cricket than expected. “It’s a remarkable comeback. If you can see even his leg now and listen to the stories he tells about what he confronted during his car accident, just the mental scarring that comes with that but the physical side and the rehab he went through, I didn’t think he would play last year’s IPL (2024).”

“But 12 months before, he said ‘Don’t worry about me, I guarantee you I’ll be right for the IPL’. We thought he’d be able to bat and we might have to use him as a sub player (Impact Player) but he kept every game, was one of our leading run-scorers, bats No. 3 in the T20 World Cup, and is part of a World Cup winning team and is named in the Test squad now,” he added.

Coming to the tournament, The first test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy will be played between November 22 – 26 at Perth Stadium.

ICC WTC Points Table System – Updated

ICC Updates the Points System Cycle for the second phase of the World Test Championship.

According to this, each match of the upcoming WTC will be contested for the same number of points, i.e., 12 for a win, 6 for a tie, and 4 for a draw. For slow over-rates, teams will lose one championship point for each over-short

In the previous cycle, each Test series carried a value of 120 points which led to some sort of inequality in the table as a team winning a Test in a two-match series got 60 points compared to a five-game leg where a Test win is valued at 24 points.

Proposed points system from WTC Cycle 2 played between 2021 to 2023:

  • Win: 12 points
  • Tie: 6 points
  • Draw: 4 points
  • Penalty: For slow over-rates teams will lose one championship point for each over short

The team will be ranked on the percentage of available points they won from the matches played.

Points available per match Percentage of points*
Win 12 100
Tie 6 50
Draw 4 33.33
Loss 0 0

Marnus Labuschagne Charged for Dissent Towards Umpire in T20 Max Tournament

Australian batter Marnus Labuschagne has been charged with umpire dissent after a heated exchange during a T20 Max semi-final.

The incident took place during a match between Redlands and Valleys at Allan Border Field in Brisbane. Captaining Redlands, Labuschagne becomes visibly upset during the seven-over run chase at Allan Border Field when the on-field umpires ruled a catch as a bump ball where opponent Hugh Weibegen being given not out.

Replays suggested that Weibegen should have been dismissed. Footage from the Kayo broadcast clearly showed Marnus Labuschagne had engaged in an argument with the umpires. The argument continued after the delivery and umpires suggested to drop the issue and walk away.

After the over, the two umpires walked to the mid-pitch, speculating from commentators who might be considering citing the player for his behavior.

“I don’t think the umpire was too pleased with how all that unfolded. I hope the umpires aren’t comparing notes there to maybe cite Marnus,” the commentator says. “He never swears, or anything like that. He’s just passionate about the game. Pretty respectfully.

“Rightfully so. He thought there was a dismissal that was out, given not out, sometimes the blood can boil. Nothing personal. Just the emotions of this game we play. Sometimes gets the better of you.”

It’s understood that Labuschagne did not use any foul language during the confrontation, but he has been charged with level 2 dissent against an umpire. The right-hand batter is now expected to face a tribunal this week, where he could potentially receive a suspension.

Labuschagne is set to join the Australian ODI squad for their upcoming series against England which starts on September 19, after the end of the T20I series.

However, the potential fallout from this incident could impact Marnus Labuschagne’s participation in domestic cricket. Having recently announced as Queensland’s captain for the 2024-25 Sheffield Shield season, any suspension given will affect his availability for the prestigious FC competition.

Although the Queensland competition’s conduct commissioner cannot suspend Labuschagne from international play, he could face domestic suspension which may affect his participation in the Sheffield Shield.

Labuschagne immediate future in domestic cricket hangs with potential sanctions that could impact his Sheffield Shield availability.

Six Sri Lanka players have obtained new career-high ratings on the latest ICC Men’s Test Rankings following their victory in the third test match against England at The Oval.

Sri Lanka secured their first test victory in England in the recently concluded series, with Skipper Dhanajaya de Silva, Kamindu Mendis, and Pathum Nissanka.

The top-order batter helped the side with a stunning century to secure their first win in 10 years. De Silva is the top scorer for Sri Lanka in the first innings of the test with 69 runs and that helped the right-hander obtain a new career-best rating and gain three places to move to 13th overall on the test rankings for batters to now be the leading player on the list from his team.

Kamindu Mendis and Nissanka also found their career-best ratings in the Test batters rankings with the former gaining six places to advance to 19th rank, after his half-century of his own against England and the latter jumping 42 spots to 39th position after smashing 64 and 127*.

England’s Joe Root retained his no. 1 spot despite his scores of 13 and 12 at The Oval. He dropped 25 points from 922 to 899. Following him, New Zealand’s Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell hold second and third rankings with 859 and 768 points respectively. Australia’s Steven Smith is in fourth place with 757 points.

Rohit Sharma is the highest-ranked batter for India with 751 points and secured fifth position in the rankings. Meanwhile, Jaiswal and Kohli secured the positions of 6 and 7 respectively with 740 and 737 points.

Indian players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Yashasvi Jaiswal have been ranked in the top 10 positions despite India haven’t played any tests since March 2024.

The trio has been given advantage with Harry Brook’s failure twice in the third and final test against Sri Lanka.

Harry Brook has dropped to 12th position with 709 rating points even as Babar Azam is close to entering the top 10.

England’s stand-in captain Ollie Pope has gained seven places and has improved to 27th spot after his century in the first innings against Sri Lanka and Jamie Smith secured 30th position jumping six spots after a half-century in the second innings.

Sri Lanka bowlers have also secured their career-best ratings in test bowler rankings, with Vishwa Fernando leading the way by gaining 13 spots to move to equal 31st following five wickets during England tests.

Teammates Lahiru Kumara and Milan Rathnayake secured 32nd and 84th spots in the rankings, while England’s Olly Stone moved 13 places to secure 74th ranking after scalping three wickets in the first innings of the Test.
