UAE Emerges as Potential Hosts for Women’s T20 World Cup 2024

After BCCI refused to host the Women’s T20I World Cup 2024, UAE has emerged as a potential alternative, but BCB is trying their best to save the tournament from being moved out.

Amid riots and violence bursting out in Bangladesh, the ICC is looking at Abu Dhabi as the option but BCB has sought more time. The ICC is expected to make a decision soon, likely on August 20. Meanwhile, an online meeting of the director is scheduled, albeit with a different agenda.

On August 15, A BCB official revealed that they have ICC for five more days before making a call. If the ICC grants the extra time, the day of the board meeting. It is understood that the ICC was expected to make decisions on the Women’s T20I World Cup by August 15.

India was the ideal option but the BCCI declined to host the tournament for multiple reasons. “They (ICC) have asked us if we would conduct the World Cup. I have categorically said no. We’re in the monsoon and on top of that we will host the women’s ODI World Cup next year. I don’t want to give any kind of signals that I want to hold consecutive World Cups,” Shah said.

ICC was looking at other alternatives given the continued disturbances in Bangladesh. But the BCB has not given up hope as they are confident in coming up with a plan that will meet the ICC’s requirement to host the tournament, with warm-up games to begin on September 27.

The main tournament begins on October 3 to 20, involving 10 teams and 23 matches. Recently, BCB has written to the Army Chief regarding security assurance for the tournament and sources said both parties are communicating regularly to see what would be possible.

The agenda for the August 20 meeting is expected to finalize the terms of reference for an inquiry into the delivery of the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 co-hosted by the USA and West Indies. ICC formed a panel with three directors – Roger Twose, Lawson Naido and Imran Khawaja to report this matter.

ICC is looking for a host country with a time zone similar to that of Bangladesh and their weather conditions. Out of the contenders, UAE fits the criteria and the Emirates Cricket Board boasts world-class infrastructure. They are also keen on hosting the event. It is understood that Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka are also interested.

Sydney Thunder signs Chamari Athapaththu for three years – WBBL 2024

Sri Lankan all-rounder Chamari Athapaththu signs a three-year deal with Sydney Thunder under the WBBL’s new multi-year contract provision that enables each of the eight clubs to sign one foreign player for up to three years outside of the season’s player draft.

In the last season, Thunder included Athapaththu as a last-minute addition but the allrounder executed a stellar performance that saw her crowned WBBL|09 Player of the Tournament.

Sydney Thunder signs Athapaththu under the league’s new multi-year, pre-draft contract provision for overseas players.

“Committing to Sydney Thunder for the next three seasons was an easy decision because I believe in the vision of this club, and I want to be part of its future success. There’s so much to love about my Sydney Thunder family.

My teammates are not just colleagues; they are friends who push each other to be better every day, [which] is important to me. It’s been an incredible journey so far, and I’m so excited for what’s ahead”, said Athapaththu.

Post the T20 Women’s T20 World Cup, Athapaththu remains high in the format with her 1027 runs coming at an average of 41.08, including two hundred and six fifties.

Thunder general manager Trent Copeland said the club was delighted to re-sign the popular Sri Lankan, who had received interest from other clubs.

“It’s incredibly exciting to have Chamari return to the Thunder and be available for the entire WBBL 2024 tournament. We know other teams were interested in signing her, but we made every effort to ensure she came back.

Chamari is obviously an exceptional cricket player, but she is also an exceptional human being who is team first and fan first… We are looking forward to Chamari returning and bringing our fans so much joy, particularly our multicultural fans that got behind her in such numbers last season”, Thunder GM Trent Copeland said.

As per a report in CA, the introduction of the multi-year provision enables each club to sign one overseas player for up to three years outside of the WBBL draft, securing high-profile talent for clubs on a longer-term basis.

All remaining overseas players must be secured by clubs via either the draft on September 1 or alternatively, signed as a replacement player in place of a full-time squad member post-draft.

Players secured under the pre-draft provision must be available for the entire season from WBBL|11 onwards. The Thunder go into the draft with at least two overseas spots to fill and picks 5, 13, 21, 29 up their sleeve.

Thunder squad for WBBL|10 (so far): Chamari Athapaththu (Sri Lanka), Sam Bates, Hannah Darlington, Saskia Horley, Anika Learoyd, Phoebe Litchfield, Claire Moore, Taneale Peschel, Georgia Voll, Tahlia Wilson

As per the WBBL 2024 schedule, Sydney Thunder Women will play their first game of the season against Hobart Hurricanes Women on October 28 in Bellerive Oval, Hobart.

Fast Bowlers ruled the ground on day 01 of the second test in the South Africa tour of the West Indies in 2024. Shamar Joseph picked up a five-wicket haul conceding 33 runs in his international debut on home soil.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder picked up four wickets which was his career-best for 18 runs to leave West Indies at 97 for seven at the stumps. Fast bowlers picked 15 out of 17 wickets and bowled 68 out of 82.2 overs.

Veteran All-rounder Jason Holder picked up 33* runs giving the side a fighting chance in the middle order and the West Indies are 63 runs adrift of South Africa’s score from the first innings. Batting first, South Africa was left shocked by sizzling spells of fast bowling from Shamar Joseph and Jayden Seales.

The latter began with dismissing Tony de Zorzi in the fourth over for one run. But Joseph struck twice in an over picking the wickets of Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma which resulted in losing three wickets for 20 runs.

David Bedingham and Tristan Stubbs balanced the scores with 28 and 26 runs. But Holder broke through the defenses with an outside edge picking the wicket of Stubbs.

After the lunch break, Joseph continued to pick wickets on his account dismissing Bedingham. Meanwhile, Seales sent back Wiaan Mulder on a duck.

Joseph picked his fourth by cleaning Maharaj and Seales added his third wicket by dismissing Kagiso Rabada. Joseph completed his five-wicket haul at home with the wicket of Kyle Verreynne with visitors losing nine wickets for 97 runs.

With a partnership from Dane Piedt and Nandre Burger, South Africa was able to post 160 runs in their innings. Last year in Centurion, South Africa was bowled out for 116 runs against West Indies, which is their lowest total in Tests against them.

But West Indies also suffered with early dismissals as Wian Mulder picked four wickets while Nandre Burger picked 2 wickets by the end of day 01. West Indies scored 97 runs for 7 wickets and left the game balanced at Providence Stadium.

With the first test, drawn due to rain in Trinidad, the two-match test series will be followed by three T20I matches.

New Zealand allrounder Sophie Devine has signed a two-year contract extension with Perth Scorchers ahead of the Women’s Big Bash League 2024. Initially, Scorchers secured the New Zealand allrounder under the Weber WBBL’s pre-draft signing rule.

Sophie Devine was retained by the Scorchers in the inaugural overseas player draft last year and she became the club’s first player – men’s or women’s – signed under the league’s new pre-signing mechanism for overseas players.

Devine amazed 489 runs and scalped 14 wickets last season and was named in the WBBL Team of the Tournament.

Hailing from New Zealand, Sophie Devine is only two wickets away from completing a 100 in the competition. Right after the announcement, Sophie Devine recalled her past with the franchise and termed the 2021-22 title winning campaign as a “special memory” when she captained the side.

“He Could Potentially Do That” Ricky Ponting Predicts Joe Root Could Surpass Sachin’s Test Cricket Tally

0
Sachin Tendulkar
Sachin Tendulkar (image: Instagram)

The Australian legendary batter Ricky Ponting thinks Joe Root might be able to surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s record to become Test Cricket’s greatest run scorer.

Recently, Root crossed his 12000 run mark to become the seventh-highest run scorer of all time and will be looking on his own and Sachin’s overall record to tumble.

The English right-hander is within 1351 runs of Ponting 13, 378, and less than 4,000 runs adrift of Tendulkar 15, 921, and could cut into this even further during his Sri Lanka tour of England in 2024.

“He could potentially do that,” former Australian batter told host Sanjana Ganesan on ICC review. “He is 33 years of age…(more than) 3000 runs behind. It depends how many Test matches they play, but if they’re playing 10 to 14 Test matches a year and if you’re scoring 800 to 1000 runs a year, then that sort of says he’s only three or four years off getting there. So that’ll take him to 37 (years of age). If his hunger’s still there, then there’s every chance that he could do it.”

Root scored his 32nd century during the test series in the West Indies tour of England in Nottingham in what was the fourth time he has reached triple figures since the start of last year.

Joe Root’s test century tally is still behind Tendulkar’s massive tally of 51 Ponting noted how much better the England batter had become in converting his good starts into big scores in recent times.

“He is someone that in the last couple of years has got better and better,” Ponting added. There’s always talk about batters reaching their prime in their early 30s and he’s certainly done that.

“It’s been his conversion rates being the big thing. Four or five years ago, he was making a lot of 50s and struggling to go on and make hundreds and he’s gone the other way recently.

“Almost every time he gets to 50 now, he goes on and makes a big hundred. So that’s been the real turnaround for him,” he concluded.

Root will be leading the batting lineup in the upcoming Sri Lanka tour of England 2024. The first test of the tour will begin on August 21 at Old Trafford Cricket Ground.

VVS Laxman to Extend Term as Head of National Cricket Academy

0
VVS Laxman
VVS Laxman (image: X)

The former India batter VVS Laxman will extend his term as head of the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru with his three-year contract until this September.

VVS Laxman was being chased by an IPL franchise for the head coach position, a role which would not be possible because of NCA duties. He is likely to be assisted by his team of coaches, including Shitanshu Kotak, Sairaj Bahutule and Hrishikesh Kanitkar who are stars of Indian domestic cricket.

Laxman’s contract extension comes ahead of the inauguration of a new state-of-the-art NCA campus on the outskirts of Bengaluru. The foundation for which laid in January 2022, 14 years after the land was sanctioned by the Karnataka government on a 99-year lease.

The New art NCA campus is believed to be equipped with 100 pitches, indoor facilities with 45 pitches, three international-sized grounds, a modern rehabilitation center, lodging facilities, and Olympic-sized pools, apart from a host of other amenities. With the NCA is in its final stages of construction and is likely to be operational from early next year.

During his first three-year term at NCA, Laxman carried forward the processes laid by his predecessor Rahul Dravid for injury management, player rehabilitation, coaching programs, and preparing roadmaps for the senior teams, age group, and women’s cricket.

One of Laxman’s challenges is the revival of the India A tour program, which has been stop-start over the past two years, unlike under Dravid when tours, both incoming and outbound, were more frequent.

Meanwhile, Jay Shah spoke about the need for strong coaches on the Bench for Team India. “India plays non-stop cricket. We have good bench strength of coaches. When Rahul (Dravid) bhai was the coach and he wanted to rest, VVS Laxman would go as the coach.”

“It depends on the coach we have picked. Gautam Gambhir was interested in all three formats, then who am I to tell him that I am going to pick you for only this format,” Shah said.

“If you look at the makeup of the Test, T20 and ODI sides, 70 percent of the team is more or less the same…How will the players bond with different coaches?”

Shah also highlighted the reason for India receiving a bigger chunk of the pie that the ICC makes, stating the benefits that arise from the India squad.

“India is the only team that travels everywhere. The benefit we get from that is that our relations with other boards get stronger and the economy of the country improves because of India. That’s why we get 40% share (in revenues from the ICC), but in turn, the other countries too earn,” concluded Jay Shah.

BCCI Considers on Shift to 84-Match Format in IPL 2025

0
Jay Shah
Jay Shah (image: X)

The BCCI is considering increasing the number of matches from 74 to 84 matches which could set potential changes in the IPL 2025 season and has sparked discussions among stakeholders.

Since the inaugural season of Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants in 2022, IPL has been played in 74 matches per season. Before that, the league featured only 60 games. The increase in the number of matches could offer more opportunities for the players.

Recently, Jay Shah has addressed the topic hinting that the IPL might expand to 84 games. Speaking to the media, he said that the final decision will depend on several factors.

“We have not taken a call on organising 84 matches in IPL 2025 since we also have to factor the load on the players due to the increase in matches. While it’s (84 matches) part of the contract, it’s up to the BCCI to decide whether to organise 74 or 84 matches,” said Jay Shah.

Shah expressed his confidence in the potential for new bidders for IPL media rights, which could bring in more competition. He also highlighted BCCI’s efforts to enhance cricket infrastructure, including new stadiums.

The idea of expanding IPL has brought in mixed reactions. Sources suggest that IPL broadcasters Star India and Viacom18 prefer to keep the league at 74 matches.

They feel that a longer duration in the season might lead to reduced advertising revenue. On the other hand, franchises are supporting the 84-match format, which could increase their revenue potential.

BCCI has reported a venue of INR 27,411 crore over the past five fiscal years from media rights, sponsorships, and revenue shares from the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Meanwhile, Shah suggested a mega auction to rebuild their teams, while others prefer maintaining their current squads. The BCCI will consider all the options before making a final decision.

“Some franchises are in favor of a mega auction since it will give them an opportunity to build a strong team. Some franchises don’t want a mega-auction since they already have a strong team. Both consistency and shuffling are important,” said Jay Shah.

With the possibility of expanding the league to 84 matches on the table, the BCCI is reviewing its options. The outcome will depend on balancing player workloads, stakeholders’ interests, and financial implications.
