Finn Allen Joins Perth Scorchers on Two-Year Deal ahead of BBL 2025

0
Finn Allen
Finn Allen (image: X)

After turning down the New Zealand Central Contract last week, Finn Allen joins Perth Scorchers on a two-year deal. Earlier this week, Allen became the latest Kiwi player to opt out of a contract to open up franchise opportunities.

Perth Scorchers were one of the clubs in BBL who has not yet announced a pre-draft signing under the new mechanism that allows multi-year deals.

Allen originally has been included in the NZC contract list announced last month and Scorcher’s interest came recently. It means he won’t be available for the white ball series against Sri Lanka which starts in December.

Allen’s T20 Strike Rate of 168.50 is the second highest for any batter with 3000 runs in the format, behind only Andre Russell. In his international career, Allen has scored two T20I centuries, while he also made an impact at the 2022 T20 World Cup.

He will be the third New Zealand Player to join the BBL, after Colin Munro (Brisbane Heat) and Tim Seifert (Melbourne Renegades). Munro officially retired from international cricket earlier this year after missing the T20 World Cup squad.

Seifert turned down a domestic contract with Northern Districts. Scorchers struggled to fill the opening role after Cameron Bancroft moved to Sydney Thunder last season. England’s Zak Crawley made two half-centuries in six innings, but there were slim pickings for the others used, including an unsuccessful move of promoting Cooper Connolly.

Signing Allen before the draft means it is uncertain if the franchise will bring Laurie Evans back after he was outstanding last season, with 292 runs at 58.40 and a strike rate of 189.61, before leaving the ILT20.

Scorchers could still take Evans in the Draft and Would have retention rights for the player. But he is expected to be limited to around seven matches. The ILT20 has advanced next year due to the Champions Trophy taking place in February and it means a much greater overlap with the BBL while the SA20 will be also taking place at the same time.

Markram, Verreynne Fifties puts South Africa in Control at Guyana

Aiden Markram and Kyle Verreynne powered up Proteas men’s scores putting a fifty each in the second innings of the second test of South Africa’s tour of the West Indies. Along with Mulder South Africa was able to host 223 runs for 5 wickets by the end of Day 02.

With a lead of 230 runs and five wickets remaining South Africa has got better aiming to claim the Sri Vivian Richards Trophy. After a stunning display from bowlers on Day 01 who picked 17 wickets, eight wickets fell on the second day of the test. South Africa took early wickets, but the last pair got them close to drawing level in the first innings.

Jason Holder and Shamar Joseph scored 40 runs for the 10th wicket stand, the second-highest in the West Indians innings. An opening stand of 79 and a half centuries from Aiden Markram and Kyle Verreynne and an unbeaten 84-run partnership between Verreynne and Wiaan Mulder, the highest of the series put South Africa in a strong position.

South Africa lost four in the first session of day one and West Indies three on day two when West Indies with an opportunity early on the third day.

West Indies will rely on their attack, particularly hometown Joseph and Jayden Seales. They were responsible for the middle-order collapse which saw South Africa lose four wickets for 19 in nine overs.

South Africa’s openers were tested upfront with seam movement from Seales and tight lines from Holder. Tony de Zorzi was hit on the back pad by Seales when he flirted with a run-out chance. South Africa went to lunch unscathed on 30 without loss.

Runs came quickly after the lunch break and South Africa had more than doubled their morning score to 66 in 4.4 overs after the interval when they offered their first real chance. Joshua Da Silva dived low to try and take the catch but could not hold on.

De Zorzi was on 36 runs off 41 deliveries and added three runs off the next 31 balls. Markram and Tristan Stubbs edged with 51 and 24 runs. Stubbs survived an lbw appeal off Holder and held his end through to tea. Markram was lucky to get there when on 42.

Three overs into the final session, Markram scored four runs before he was sent out on a delivery from Motie on a lbw. The Umpire did not give out at first, but West Indies successfully reviewed to have the decision overturned.

Stubbs edged Seales to Da Silva and two overs after that David Bedingham was bowled to give Seales a second wicket in three overs and give the hosts a chance to keep South Africa’s lead under 200 at Providence Stadium.

Zimbabwe Emerges as Contender to Host Women’s T20 World Cup

ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024 (image: Instagram)

With ICC looking for alternatives to host the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, Zimbabwe has emerged as one of two options being considered to host the event. After India rejected ICC’s offer to host the tournament, the sports governing body is expected to be made by the ICC board on Tuesday.

The tournament which is due to start on October 03 and was scheduled for Bangladesh is likely to be moved after anti-government agitations with security concerns.

Zimbabwe’s interest comes on the back of intentions to promote itself as a destination for big cricket after successfully hosting the last two ODI World Cup Qualifiers. The country has lasted a World Cup in 2003, alongside with South Africa and Kenya.

Zimbabwe spent several years isolated from major events, which included the Robert Mugabe regime cutting itself off from much of the world, hyperinflation, and a self-imposed Test Hiatus between 2005 and 2011.

The men’s team failed to qualify for two successive ODI World Cups and two of the last three T20 World Cups. The Women’s team has never competed at a World Cup and will not feature at this year’s event. But Zimbabwe is eager to be a neutral host of the tournament.

The African country has been announced as the host for the men’s 2026 U-19 World Cup along with Namibia. They are set to organize the much-awaited 2027 ODI World Cup along with South Africa and Namibia.

Zimbabwe is likely to have two more venues ready ahead of the World Cup 2027. As per reports, government authorities are building multi-purpose facilities in Victoria Falls and Mutare. The weather in Zimbabwe will be also suitable conditions with the country enjoying summer in October and only minimal rain expected.

India rejected the offer to host because the country will be experiencing the last of the monsoon. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is also understood to have fallen out of contention for weather-related seasons.

Currently, the country has two primary venues, Harare Sports Club and Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, if Zimbabwe Cricket is set to host the Women’s World Cup.

Ireland Women made a historic win against Sri Lanka Women by three wickets in the first ODI of the three-match series. Orla Prendergast pulled a stunning display picking up 3 for 25 runs and followed up an unbeaten 122 runs of 107 balls.

Sri Lanka was confident on Vishmi Gunaratne’s maiden ODI century to post a total of 260 runs for 8. Responding to the total, Prendergast also scored a maiden ODI century to help Ireland record their first successful chase of over 200 in ODIs. This was also Ireland’s first ODI win over Sri Lanka in five attempts.

Prendergast reached her fifty with a four off Kavisha Dilhar off 57 balls. Ireland lost wickets at regular intervals from the other end, but Prendergast kept the scoreboard ticking. In the last three overs, Ireland needed 30 runs with just three wickets in hand.

The 48th over, though turned the match in their favour as Prendergast hit Dilhari for two fours and a six. The first four brought her century off 97 balls. The 18-run over reduced the equation to 12 required from two overs.

Prendergast hit the winning single, off the second ball of the final over. Her unbeaten 122 was the second-highest score while batting at No. 4 or lower in the Women’s ODI chase.

Gunaratne became the second Sri Lanka batter after Chamari Athapaththu to score an ODI century. Chamari who was named as the women’s Player of the Month for July 2024 was sent out on a golden duck in the first over. Harshitha Samarawickrama took 11 balls to get off the mark but struck 19 runs by Alana Dalzell in the eighth over.

Gunaratne and Hasini Perera joined forces to take the innings forward. They scored a 122-run partnership for the third wicket. Arlene Kelly picked the wicket of Gunaratne which put the side in a struggle.

Sri Lanka lost Dilhar and Perera in quick time, but useful contributions from the lower middle order of 62 runs in the last ten overs, and 36 in the last five. Leading the series, Ireland women will be looking forward to continuing their win streak against Sri Lanka in the 2nd ODI on August 18 at Stormont.

SLC confirmed that the Sri Lanka WK-Batter Niroshan Dickwella has been suspended indefinitely for failing the Doping test during LPL 2024. During the franchise cricket, he failed the test in line with World Anti-Doping guidelines and henceforth will be suspended from all forms of cricket.

“The suspension is effective immediately and will remain in place until further notice,” stated an SLC media release. “The test, which was conducted by the Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency (SLADA) during the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024, is part of SLC’s ongoing commitment to maintaining the integrity of the sport.

“This initiative, undertaken in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports and in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) guidelines, is aimed at ensuring that cricket remains free from the influence of prohibited substances.

“SLC, together with the Ministry of Sports and SLADA, conducts these tests during domestic tournaments randomly to safeguard the sport against anti-doping violations.”

Dicwella has amassed 2757 runs in Tests, 1604 runs in ODIs, and 480 in T20Is for Sri Lanka. The Galle Marvels captain turned out for the National side in 2023 but received a call-up for the T20I series against Bangladesh earlier this year. He did not feature in a single game.

After his selection, the selectors had spoken with Dickwella over his poor disciplinary record. He was one of the three players banned for breaching bio-bubble protocols in 2021, along with Kusal Mendis and Danushka Gunathilake.

The SA20 club Joburg Super Kings has announced that the New Zealand WK-Batter Devon Conway has joined the side for the upcoming edition which starts in January 2025. He will be the third pre-signing overseas player for the squad.

Conway is part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL and Texas Super Kings (TSK) in MLC and is set to play for Johannesburg in the upcoming season. This will mark a homecoming for the player in any tournament despite being born in a South African city.

“𝙆𝙞𝙬𝙞 / 𝙒𝙞𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙩 𝙆𝙚𝙚𝙥𝙚𝙧 𝘽𝙖𝙩𝙨𝙢𝙖𝙣 / 𝙀𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙎𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙇𝙞𝙤𝙣. Welcome to the Wanderful pride, Devon!” Joburg-based franchise shared a video on X.

Devon Conway emerged as one of the top scores in the latest edition of MLC. The left-hander has amassed 293 runs in eight matches with a strike rate of 143.62 in three fifties. However, he missed IPL 2024 due to a thumb injury.

Conway has a brilliant T20 cricket, scoring 6028 in 187 matches with the help of two hundreds and 48 fifties.

Recently, Devon Conway signed a casual cricket over central contract with NZC to allow him to pick and choose international assignments to prioritize franchise cricket.

“The decision to move away from a central playing contract isn’t one I’ve taken lightly, but I believe it is the best for me and my family at this present time. Playing for the Black Caps is still the pinnacle for me and I’m hugely passionate about representing New Zealand and winning games of international cricket,” he added.

NZC Chief Executive Scott Weenink opened up on the importance of flexibility amid the growth of the T20 league around the world.

“In the current environment, it’s important to have flexibility in our system to navigate some of the challenges posed by franchise cricket.” Devon Conway has represented New Zealand in 20 tests, 32 ODIs, and 50 T20Is. He will be available for the Champions Trophy next year.

“In the first two seasons, the world-class cricket in front of capacity crowds has positioned Betaway 2024 as one of the Tier 1 franchise leagues on the global circuit. With international stars like Dinesh Karthik, Ben Stokes, Kane Williamson, Joe Root, Trent Boult, Jonny Bairstow, Devon Conway, Zak Crawley, Rashid Khan, and Rahmanullah Gurbaz committing to their respective SA20 teams, the hard work that the league and franchises have put into a create a world-class experience has paid off and we thank everyone involved for their monumental efforts,” said Smith.

IPL 2025 Mega Auction Rules, Retention, RTM Regulation

IPL Mega Auction 2025 Rules

Right after BCCI confirmed a mega auction for the next season, fans started to search for the IPL mega auction 2025 rules and regulations.

IPL 2025 mega auction will be a key event for the teams to revamp their squad but the same will be a burden for some teams who already put a lot of effort into building a team in the last three seasons.

With lots of discussions revolving around the IPL mega auction 2025 rules, BCCI organised an IPL franchise meeting on 31 July 2024 where the teams made multiple suggestions for the auction including a two-year ban on overseas players who skip the tournament after being bought at the auction.

Though IPL franchises make some recommendations, the board will decide. Ahead of the IPL 2025 auction, as of the previous mega auction, the franchise will announce their retained and released players list as per the rules.

Along with the released players, players who met the eligible criteria will register their names for the IPL 2025 mega auction from which the board will list out the qualified players’ names along with their base price ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction date.

IPL Mega Auction 2025 Rules

The IPL 2025 mega auction is expected to be held in the 3rd or 4th week of November 2024 in UAE or London. The IPL 2025 auction date will be updated here right after the official announcement from BCCI.

As per the report, the deadline for teams to announce their retention is expected to be around November 15 while the retention rules might be announced at the end of September.

Players who the BCCI approves to be a part of the IPL 2025 mega auction will be grouped under three different categories – Capped, Uncapped, and Overseas players.

Following are the details of the IPL 2025 mega auction rules:

  • A team is set to be allowed to keep up to three Indian(capped/uncapped) and two foreign players with the total number of retentions not exceeding four.
  • It is clearly said that a team cannot keep more than two uncapped players.
  • As per the conditions, the team management can either retain three Indian players and one overseas player or two Indian players and two overseas players.
  • The decision over the Right to Match (RTM) cards for the IPL 2025 Mega Auction is yet to be announced.
  • Each franchise will receive a budget of INR 100 crore for the auction from which a team should spend at least 75 percent (INR 75 Crore) on players. Moreover, franchises can spend 30-40 percent of their budget on the top 5 players.
  • BCCI will finalize the auction players list and group them into three different categories: Capped, Uncapped, and Overseas players.
    • Capped – Indian players who represented the country’s senior team in any format at least once.
    • Uncapped – Indian domestic players who are in the first-class circuit but haven’t represented India in any international matches.
    • Overseas – Players who are not from India. This category will contain all capped, uncapped non-Indian players.
  • A team can compromise a minimum of 18 players and a maximum of 25 players in their squad.
  • A team can hold a maximum of eight foreign players with only four being allowed to field at one time during the match.

IPL Auction

IPL 2025 Player Retention Rules

The IPL 2025 Retention Rules vary based on the number of RTMs available in the auction. Each team can hold up to five players ahead of the auction.

It comes in combination with the ‘right-to-match’ (RTM) policy. As per IPL Mega Auction 2025 rules, a team can retain up to three Indian-capped players, up to two overseas and one uncapped Indian player.

RTM is an option that teams can use on players that match a bid during the auction to ensure the player is retained. BCCI also explained the salary cap for the retained players based on the team’s decision on the number of players retained.

  • If a team retains 4 players, Rs 42 crore will be cut from the player purse.
  • If a team retains 3 players, Rs 33 crore will be cut from the player purse.
