Rashid Khan Withdraws from BBL for Second Consecutive Season

The Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan has decided to skip the Big Bash League tournament 2024-2025. This will be a significant setback for Adelaide Strikers since he is among the big names in the competition.

This started back in the 2023 season when Australia skipped an ODI series with Afghanistan due to the Taliban’s banned Education for girls.

The Afghan skipper skipped the tournament last season after he threatened to boycott BBL 2023. Even though he withdrew from his decision, he decided to stick with his original decision and hence opted out of the league.

It is understood that the Strikers were in constant contact with Rashid Khan before the decision not to play this summer. As per reports, Cricket Australia is adamant that Australia skipping the ODI series is not the reason for him withdrawing from Big Bash.

Rashid Khan has been one of the key players for the Strikers in the previous seasons. he has bagged 98 wickets in 69 matches. Cricket Australia has revealed that they will always have Rashid back in the league and there is no animosity between the two parties.

Rashid Khan recently featured in The Hundred for the Trent Rockets before sustaining an in injury while fielding. He is set to play a series against Zimbabwe in December while he will represent the MI New York in the SA20 third season.

Rashid Khan’s decision not to participate comes as Australia’s Test captain, Pat Cummins also indicated that he will be missing the Australia domestic league. Cummins has hinted at increasing workload management ahead of the Border Gavaskar Trophy Test series and the Sri Lanka tour as the reason for the unavailability.

However, Big Bash will have the dates overlap with the South African league and there are concrete efforts to wrap up the franchise tournaments as the Champions Trophy 2025 is scheduled in February.

The Priority at The Moment” Cummins Prefers Increased Workload ahead of Test Season

Border Gavaskar Trophy

Australia Test captain Pat Cummins will be not playing in Sheffield Shield before the start of the test summer as Australia’s captain manages his workload ahead of the BGT.

Cummins will skip the white ball series against England and Scotland, after spending two months at home between February and July.

“I’ve got those ODIs, aiming to absolutely be part of that series,” Cummins said. “I would say at least a NSW one-day game, if not a Shield game, before the ODIs.

“The priority at the moment is to smash out some gym work and start reassessing in a few weeks a path forward. I’m just trying to fill up the bucket again after two years of non-stop bowling. (Hoping) come that first Test in as good of a position as I have been in for a few years.”

Cummins said that his decision on playing IPL and MLC is not the case of club versus country.

Pat Cummins
Pat Cummins

“This was an interesting year in this gap leading into the summer was always planned,” Cummins said. “MLC popped up late, and when we were talking through the schedule didn’t change the prep leading into the summer.”

It is expected workloads will become crucial this summer as the highly anticipated Border Gavaskar Trophy stretches to five tests for the first time. Australia will be traveling to Sri Lanka for a test series.

But he has predicted both Cameron Green and Mitch Marsh’s inclusion for the series. Green and Marsh who bowled only 24 and 25 overs respectively last summer across five tests, but the test captain expects that will change in the series against India.

“We haven’t had to use them as much as we thought we would, which is a great thing,” Cummins said. The last couple of summers have been pretty light, quick Test matches.”

“I suspect this summer might be a bit different at times. We’ll be drawing on Cam Green and Mitch Marsh a bit more. Even someone like Cam Green basically started in Shield cricket as a bowler but hasn’t had to bowl heaps in Test matches.

“We’re really lucky Nathan Lyon bowls plenty of overs, so you don’t necessarily have to have an allrounder. But it makes a big difference to have that fifth bowling option. We have six,” concluded Cummins.

The first test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2025 will begin on November 22 at Optus Stadium.

London Spirit claimed the first title after a stunning victory over Welsh Fire in The Women’s Hundred 2024 finals at the Lord’s. Chasing the target of 116, Spirit secured the victory with two balls remaining and four wickets in hand.

The Women’s Hundred 2024 winners were chasing 116 runs to win and needed six runs off in the final five deliveries after some excellent bowling from Shabnim Ismail took the game down to the wire, but the hosts managed to hold their nerve with Sharma launching Hayley Matthews to the long-on boundary to seal the deal.

Welsh Fire posted a total of 115 runs for 8 wickets after losing the toss and being inserted to bat with Jess Jonassen doing the bulk of the work posting her first fifty of the tournament.

Captain Tammy Beaumont and Matthews looked briefly threatening at the top of the order but Spirit’s leg spinner Sarah Glenn struck twice in three balls during her brilliant spell.

Spirit lost Meg Lanning and Cordelia Griffith early in the chase before Danielle Gibson and Georgia Redmayne helped to steady the ship with a 32-run partnership that took Spirit into triple figures.

However, Ismail countered the batting threat by making Crucial breakthroughs in the innings, picking the wicket of skipper Heather Knight and Gibson, but the fast bowler was unable to keep Sharma’s six.

Spirit suffered an early blow after their opener Lanning was sent out for two by an inswinger from Ismail. Griffith attempted to drive off-spinner Georgia Davis but was sent out for 24 runs.

Heather Knight and Danielle Gibson scored 24 and 22 runs respectively before Deepti Sharma scored 16* runs in the match. Georgia Redmayne was named as the Player of the Match. While speaking in the post-match conference, “I’m not sure anything is going to top that feeling, watching Deepti hit that six. Amazing feeling, everyone played their part today, the bowlers were brilliant, especially in the middle phase.”

“They bowled really well too, especially Ismail, it was pretty nerve-wracking but we did it. I think we gathered here before the tournament started and talked about what our aims were. We wanted to be the first women’s side to reach the final in front of our home crowd at Lord’s and win the trophy and we did that,” said Georgia Redmayne.

Meanwhile, in Men’s Hundred 2024, Oval Invincibles beat Southern Brave in the finals by 17 runs at Lord’s.

The Men’s Oval Invincibles clinched The Hundred Men’s 2024 Competition title defeating the Southern Brave by 17 runs difference in the finals played at Lord’s Cricket Ground on Sunday.

The Hundred 2024 winners claimed the second title, as they defeated Manchester Originals by 14 runs in last year’s finals. Saqib Mahmood’s three-wicket haul helped the side defend the total of 147. Through his reverse swing spells, he removed Leus du Plooy, Kieron Pollard, and Laurie Evans, who was considered one of the biggest talents in English domestic cricket.

Invincibles were the unmatched team of the season who tallied the achievement of their women counterparts. The Women’s Oval Invincibles has won back-to-back titles in 2021 and 2022.

Sam Billings has become the first captain in the history of the tournament to lift two titles. Talking about the match, Brave won the toss and asked the defending champions to bat first. Will Jacks put up 37 runs while opening for the side With Sam Curran and Jordan Cox posting 25 runs each, Sam Billings and Donovan Ferreira were dismissed by Hosein for a duck and 5 runs respectively.

Tom Curran and Tom Lammonby put up 24 and 16 runs in the match to set a target of 147 runs. Responding to the total, Brave’s openers Alex Davies and captain James Vince posted a 58-run stand, But Adam Zampa broke through the defenses dismissing Alex for 35 runs.

Will Jacks remove the highest run scorer of the tournament James Vince for 24 runs. With Leus du Plooy and Laurie Evans’ scores of 20 and 16, the middle order collapsed entirely with single-digit scores from each batter.

Craig Overton put up a score of 22 in the end, but it was not enough to help the side to clinch the title. Sam Curran was named as the Player of the series. While speaking at the winning ceremony, “The environment we have had over the last 4 years has really helped. Similar faces, similar staff, and when we walk into work with a smile it helps. [if he is batting or a bowling allrounder] Don’t care, back-to-back winners.”

“We won’t hear the end of it tonight, really glad for Tom. He came out and pleased to see him perform for us. Everyone has stood up for us, really pleased we got the trophy and feeling really happy.” said Sam Curran.

ICC Considers on Including Cricket in Youth Olympics 2030

In a recent development, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering on making collaboration with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to introduce cricket at the 2030 Youth Olympics.

This comes in response to India’s announcement last year of its interest in hosting the 2030 Youth Olympic Games in Mumbai and the 2036 Olympics.

The ICC’s General manager of development has hinted about the positive initiative in an email exchange with Vivek Gopalan stating, “It’s a positive initiative and certainly something we could explore further.”

He firmly believes, “The appetite for cricket to feature in the Youth Olympic Games is undeniable, especially with Mumbai’s aspirations to play host in 2030.” In his correspondence, he highlighted that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has publicly voiced India’s ambition to secure both the 2030 YOG and the 2036 Olympics, adding weight to the cause.”

During the IOC session in Mumbai last October, Modi hinted at the youth Olympic Games potential, although recent government priorities seem to have pivoted towards the 2036 Olympic bid, a sentiment he reiterated during his Independence Day address.

Gopalan has sent an email to ICC officials outlining several arguments on cricket’s inclusion in the YOG. “Top sports, including Rugby Sevens, are already part of the YOG. Why not include Cricket? Its addition could significantly boost grassroots cricket internationally, particularly among ICC Associates.”

Moreover, Gopalan’s communication emphasized, “Given ICC’s newly forged ties with the IOC and the IOC’s recognition of cricket’s ability to enhance the Olympic brand, persuading the IOC to welcome cricket as a core sport in the Youth Olympics should not present a formidable challenge.”

Cricket will make a return during the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, marking the sport featuring in the Olympics after 128 years.

The Youth Olympics will have an array of sports including Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Boxing, Canoeing, Cycling, Diving, Equestrian, Fencing, Field Hockey, Football, Futsal, Golf, Gymnastics, Handball, Judo, Modern Pentathlon, Rowing, Rugby Sevens, Sailing, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Triathlon, Volleyball, Weightlifting, and Wrestling which would be exciting spectacle for Yount Athletes World wide.

Preity Zinta Files Petition Against PBKS Co-Owner Over Sales of Shares to Third Party

According to reports, differences have emerged between Punjab Kings owners Preity Zinta and Mohit Burman who holds the major share in the franchise.

It is understood that Preity Zinta has issued a restraining order against Mohit Burman for selling a part of his shares to another party. The reports claimed that the actress has filed an appeal in the Chandigarh High Court related to the same matter.

Preity Zinta holds a 23 percent share in the Punjab Kings via KPH Dream Cricket Private Limited while Mohit Burman holds the largest share with 48 percent in KPH Dream Cricket Private Limited.

Ness Wadia is the third owner in the promoter group, possessing 23 percent shares, while Karan Paul, the fourth owner, holds the remaining shares. In the last few weeks, there have been a lot of reports on Mohit Burman who is associated with Dabur company is planning to sell 11.5 percent of his stake to an unnamed party which disturbs Preity Zinta.

However, Mohit Burman denied the allegations of him selling his shares of Punjab Kings. “I don’t have any plans to sell my shares,” said Mohit Burman on media.

The report stated that “Preity Zinta said Burman holds approximately 48 percent of the shareholding and is also on the board of directors. She has filed the petition under Section 9 of the Arbitration and Conciliation Act-1996 seeking interim measures and direction in view of the disputes and differences between her and respondent Mohit Burman.”

Although the report doesn’t give any clarity related to the same, the reports stated that Mohit Burman cannot sell his stake to an outside party before getting permission from the board. The stake can only be sold to an outside party once the current promoters decline to purchase it.

The external matters are not good, and the same thing is not happening on the field as well. The franchise hasn’t been up to the mark with their performances with the bat and ball in the league since the inaugural edition.

The franchise is unlikely to renew head coach Trevor Bayliss’s contract and will be looking for a new Indian coach ahead of the mega auction this year. They have been the original eight teams of the IPL. They had been underperforming in the IPL as they have reached the finals once and semi-finals once.
