David Warner is set to be available for the first full BBL season after re-signing a two-year deal with Sydney Thunder.

After retiring from international cricket, David Warner will be joining his former Australian teammates Steve Smith (Sydney Sixers), Marnus Labuschagne (Brisbane Heat), and Alex Carey (Adelaide Strikers) who will be signing new deals today.

The Long-term commitment of several Australian stars in a single season will boost the popularity and confidence in the competition as ticket sales for the league will go online at midday.

Warner has never played more than six BBL games in a single season due to his national commitments. But this is set to change this summer as he announced his retirement by the end of the T20 World Cup in June.

Sydney Thunder Squad: Wes Agar, Cameron Bancroft, Sam Billings (direct overseas signing), Oliver Davies, Matt Gilkes, Chris Green, Liam Hatcher, Sam Konstas, Nathan McAndrew, William Salzmann, Daniel Sams, Jason Sangha, Tanveer Sangha, David Warner

The Thunder have confirmed the 37-year-old will be available for their entire season from the first match Against Adelaide Strikers in Canberra on December 17.

“I’ve always been part of the Thunder,” said Warner. “I really liked the environment last year (at the Thunder), I gelled back with the boys and I just love playing cricket.”

The addition of Warner will boost the top-order strength and the veteran left-hander is expected to partner former Australian opening partner Cameron Bancroft. Recently, the club has signed Sam Billing on a three-year deal as their pre-draft overseas signing.

The Sydney Thunder general manager Trent Copeland said, “Davey is popular wherever he plays, right around the world, particularly in India and I know the South Asian communities in Sydney’s west will get right behind him at Thunder.”

“In Davey, we get a world-class talent with almost 20 years of T20 experience and now that he has retired from international cricket, we can count on his full focus and commitment for the entire tournament, including the finals.

BCB Director Jalal Yunus Resigns Following Change in Government

0
Jalal Yunus
Jalal Yunus (image: X)

The Bangladesh Cricket Board’s opening chairman Jalal Yunus has resigned from his position with immediate effect on August 19. The resignation comes amid the change in government following the protests from students that drove out the Awami League Government on August 05.

He is the first director to step down from the board that has been under severe scrutiny. “I have resigned from the board for the interest of cricket,” Jalal said.

On the other hand, BCB president Nazmul Hasan has also expressed his desire to resign in the interest of supporting cricket and cooperating with the board. After the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India, the country’s law and order deteriorated greatly. Later the situation improved a lot with the help of student society and others.

ICC has been monitoring the situation in Bangladesh who are scheduled to host the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in October. However, the protests and domestic violence have made ICC consider other options for hosting the tournament.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh requested the ICC to hold the decision for a little longer as they don’t want the tournament to go out of the country. BCB also wrote a letter to the Bangladesh Army General relating to providing security assistance for the event.

The law and order situation in the country is improving as 13 advisers of the interim government under the leadership of Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Men’s team is in Pakistan to play a match test series starting this week. With the second match of the test series has been rescheduled from Karachi to Rawalpindi due to construction works ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025, the first test will begin on August 21 at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

“Might be the wrong thing to do”, Alyssa Healy on playing World Cup in Bangladesh

Alyssa Healy

Amid unrest situation in Bangladesh, Australia women’s team captain Alyssa Healy claims that playing T20 World Cup 2024 in Bangladesh ‘would be the wrong thing to do’.

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 was scheduled to be played in Bangladesh from October 3 to 20 but owing to the political collapse in the Asian nation, the future of the tournament is yet to be decided by ICC.

With just a few weeks for the tournament, ICC has not yet made any announcements regarding the change in host. Earlier, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed that two venues, Dhaka and Sylhet would host the matches but owing to growing political turmoil in Bangladesh, the tournament was expected to move out of the nation.

An earlier report stated that the no. 1 richest cricket board BCCI refused ICC’s offer to Host Women’s T20 World Cup. With ICC looking for alternatives to host the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, UAE and Zimbabwe have emerged as contenders to host the tournament.

BCCI

Apart from the undecided future regarding the host, Australian women’s captain Alyssa Healy said “It might be the wrong thing to play World Cup in Bangladesh”.

“I’d find it hard to fathom playing there [in Bangladesh] at the moment, as a human being, I feel like it might be the wrong thing to do. (That would be) taking resources away from a country that is really struggling.

They’re needing everyone they can possibly get in there helping people that are dying. There are obviously bigger factors at play than putting a cricket tournament on in Bangladesh at the moment … but I’ll leave it to the ICC to work out,” Healy said.

Australia Women’s cricket team maintains an impressive record on Bangladesh soil. Australia toured Bangladesh in March-April this year and came away with a clinical 3-0 series victory in T20I.

Speaking of the past data, Healy believes slow and turning pitches in Bangladesh might put them in a good position in the global event in case the venues remain unchanged.

“Going there and getting used to those conditions and slow turning wickets has probably put us in a good place. It’s more about what our team looks like, and what people are working on individually headed into a World Cup on the subcontinent.

Whether it is in Bangladesh, or it’s not in Bangladesh, I don’t think affects us greatly with the make-up of what we’ve got. We’re well prepared for whatever is thrown at us,” Healy added.

As per the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 schedule, defending Champions Australia will play their first match of the tournament against Sri Lanka on 4 October.

“I’m extremely hungry” Nathan Lyon Throws Jaiswal Warning Ahead of Border Gavaskar Trophy

Nathan Lyon
Nathan Lyon (image: X)

With the highly anticipated Border Gavaskar Trophy set to begin in November, Australian bowler Nathan Lyon revealed his hunger for the Border Gavaskar Trophy and talked about Australia’s losing streak against India on Sunday.

India has been dominating their rivals Australia and once again they will be competing in the tournament as favourites. On this occasion, Nathon Lyon pointed out Australia’s 10-year drought in Tests against India.

“Don’t get me wrong, India is an absolute superstar side and extremely challenging but I’m extremely hungry to turn things around and make sure we get that trophy back,”  said Nathon Lyon.

Australia are the current World Test Champions having beaten India in the WTC 2023 finals but they are in a trophy drought against India in recent years. Lyon highlighted India as an extremely challenging team and said Australia is looking to turn things around in the upcoming series.

“It’s been ten years of unfinished business, it’s been a long time, and I know we’re extremely hungry to turn things around especially here at home,” said Lyon. “Don’t get me wrong, India is an absolute superstar side and extremely challenging but I’m extremely hungry to turn things around and make sure we get that trophy back.

“Feel like we are a different team to a couple of years ago, we are on a journey of becoming a great Australian cricket team. We’re definitely not there but we are along that journey and have been playing some decent cricket.”

Lyon hinted that Youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal will be a massive challenge for Australia in the upcoming Border Gavaskar Trophy. Earlier Jaiswal smashed 712 runs in nine innings against England.

“I haven’t come across Yashasvi Jaiswal yet, but that will be a massive challenge for all us bowlers. The way he played against England, I watched that quite closely and thought that was quite amazing.”

“I had some really good chats with Tom Hartley about different ways he went about it to different guys which I found quite interesting.”

“I love talking about cricket, so if I can talk to someone who has played Test cricket I might be able to pick up something I’m not aware of. There’s so much knowledge floating around this game that we can always tap into,” Lyon added further.

Currently, India tops the WTC points table with 6 wins in 9 matches while Australia has 8 wins in 12 matches. Coming to the test series, Australia and India will play their first test on November 22 at Optus Stadium.

Indian star batter Jemimah Rodrigues expressed her excitement to play her first-ever Women’s Caribbean Premier League season this year. Jemimah was roped in by the Trinbago Knight Riders Women for the WCPL 2024 season set to kick start on August 21.

Interestingly, Shreyanka Patil and Jemimah Rodrigues both will represent Trinbago Knight Riders Women in the WCPL 2024 season. Notably, former Indian cricketer Jhulan Goswami was appointed as Trinbago Knight Riders’ Mentor for this season.

With few days for the tournament, Jemimah posted a selfie along with her Indian colleagues at the WCPL as her Instagram story and captioned it “Agla (next) Station: West Indies. See you soon TKR.”

Jemimah Rodrigues Instagram story

“This is the first time I’ll be coming to the WCPL. I’ve played for India in the Caribbean quite a bit, but I’m really excited that I’ll be representing the Knight Riders in the WCPL. We all know the legacy that they have across the globe,” Jemimah was quoted as saying by the IE.

Trinbago Knight Riders Women Squad: Deandra Dottin, Chedean Nation, Kycia Knight, Shamilia Connell, Kyshona Knight, Jahzara Claxton, Zaida James, Jannillea Glasgow, Anisa Mohammed, Shunelle Shaw, Samara Ramnath, Meg Lanning, Jess Jonassen, Jemimah Rodrigues, Shikha Pandey.

WCPL 2024 will follow a double round-robin and final format. All three teams will play each other side twice, therefore playing four matches apiece. The top two teams of the WCPL 2024 points table will advance to the final.

All 2024 Women’s Caribbean Premier League matches will be played at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in San Fernando, Trinidad.

PCB shifts Pakistan’s Second Test against Bangladesh from Karachi to Rawalpindi

With Pakistan’s test series against Bangladesh scheduled to commence on August 21, PCB has shifted the second test from Karachi to Rawalpindi due to ongoing construction and renovation at the Karachi Stadium.

The Pakistan Cricket Board had earlier informed that Karachi Stadium is currently undergoing construction as it is one of the three venues hosting the Champions Trophy 2025 games.

Hence, the board canceled the ticket bookings for fans and also promised a refund. Concerning the noise pollution caused due to ongoing work, the second test has been rescheduled to Rawalpindi.

“Additionally, the dust from the construction work could also affect the health and well-being of the players, officials, broadcasters, and media,” the PCB said in a statement.

The Champions Trophy 2025 will commence on February 19 and Karachi Stadium is one of the premier venues for the global event. Before the marquee event, the stadium will host a touring England team in one of the three tests in October. On this, PCB iterated that the developments will be closely monitored to ensure the safe conduction of the game.

Last week, the PCB initially declared that the second test, scheduled from August 30 to September 03, would proceed without spectators in Karachi due to the construction efforts to upgrade the stadium ahead of the Champions League 2025 Trophy. However, recent developments prompted a revaluation of the situation.

“At this stage, we will not like to speculate. We will continue to work closely with the architects and construction experts on the safe and secure hosting of the match, while keeping the England and Wales Cricket Board updated,” the PCB concluded.

According to PTI, the construction company responsible for the renovations advised the board earlier last week to shift the match from Karachi. The company cited concerns that the usage of heavy equipment and the noise generated by the construction could disrupt the players’ focus during the game.

It is further said that Pakistan Shaheens and Bangladesh ‘A’ will continue the series in Islamabad. After a drawn first four-day match, the second four-day match will be played on August 20 at the Islamabad Club, followed by three 50-over matches on August 26, 28, and 30 respectively.

Coming to the test series, the Bangladesh test series will begin on August 21 at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

Mohammed Shami likely to play in Ranji Trophy 2024-25 for Bengal

0
Mohammed Shami

Indian senior pacer Mohammed Shami is likely to make his comeback to competitive cricket for his domestic side Bengal in the Ranji Trophy. The experienced Indian pacer Mohammed Shami played his last international game during India’s ODI World Cup final against Australia in November 2023 and then underwent ankle surgery.

Since then he has been sidelined from many international tournaments and series and even ruled out of the IPL 2024 season following his rehabilitation.

According to a report, the star pacer is likely to play Bengal’s opening two matches in the Ranji Trophy.

Bengal will kick off their campaign against Uttar Pradesh on October 11 and next face Bihar on October 19. Shami is expected to feature in the first or both matches to regain match fitness.

Since there will be only a one-or-two day gap between both the games it is unlikely that he will play both.

As the first test of the New Zealand tour of India 2024 collides with Bengal’s Ranji Trophy fixtures, Shami is likely to miss the opening game but is expected to join the squad for the remaining matches and is tipped to feature in the crucial Border-Gavaskar Trophy as well.

Moreover, BCCI is expected to keep their pace attack fresh for the Australia Test series and is likely to rely on spin strength at home conditions against New Zealand.

The Indian management is looking to keep pace trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami fit for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Before hosting New Zealand, team India will host Bangladesh for 2 Tests and three T20Is but it will be too early for Shami to make an international comeback. Ranji Trophy 2024-25 will kick start on 11 October 2024 with the final game on 26 February 2025.

Rashid Khan Withdraws from BBL for Second Consecutive Season

0
Rashid Khan
Rashid Khan (image: X)

The Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan has decided to skip the Big Bash League tournament 2024-2025. This will be a significant setback for Adelaide Strikers since he is among the big names in the competition.

This started back in the 2023 season when Australia skipped an ODI series with Afghanistan due to the Taliban’s banned Education for girls.

The Afghan skipper skipped the tournament last season after he threatened to boycott BBL 2023. Even though he withdrew from his decision, he decided to stick with his original decision and hence opted out of the league.

It is understood that the Strikers were in constant contact with Rashid Khan before the decision not to play this summer. As per reports, Cricket Australia is adamant that Australia skipping the ODI series is not the reason for him withdrawing from Big Bash.

Rashid Khan
Rashid Khan (image: X)

Rashid Khan has been one of the key players for the Strikers in the previous seasons. he has bagged 98 wickets in 69 matches. Cricket Australia has revealed that they will always have Rashid back in the league and there is no animosity between the two parties.

Rashid Khan recently featured in The Hundred for the Trent Rockets before sustaining an in injury while fielding. He is set to play a series against Zimbabwe in December while he will represent the MI New York in the SA20 third season.

Rashid Khan’s decision not to participate comes as Australia’s Test captain, Pat Cummins also indicated that he will be missing the Australia domestic league. Cummins has hinted at increasing workload management ahead of the Border Gavaskar Trophy Test series and the Sri Lanka tour as the reason for the unavailability.

However, Big Bash will have the dates overlap with the South African league and there are concrete efforts to wrap up the franchise tournaments as the Champions Trophy 2025 is scheduled in February.

Aamir Jamal
Aamir Jamal(Image: PCB)

Pakistan suffers a major blowback as they lose Aamir Jamal ahead of the two-match test series against Bangladesh. As a result, the Pakistan squad for the tests has been reduced to 14 players as spinner Abrar Ahmed and batter Kamran Ghulam were released over the weekend.

The 28-year-old pacer failed to recover from his back injury and has been sent to the National Cricket Academy in Lahore to continue his rehabilitation. Pakistan will enter the first test against Bangladesh with left-arm pacer Shaheen Afridi and pacer Naseem Shah who will be likely to lead the bowling group that also Khurram Shehzad and Mir Hamza.

Aamir Jamal has been expected to challenge for a place in the playing 11 after he impressed on his debut against Australia across the new year, but his injury setback will mean the right arm will have to bid his time for a recall.

Pakistan currently sits in sixth place on the World Test Championship points table and will be looking for a victory in the series against Bangladesh to move back into contention of reaching next year’s one-off finals at Lord’s.

Meanwhile, the second test has been shifted to Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium due to renovation work that was scheduled to take place in Karachi. The first test will begin on August 21 at Rawalpindi Stadium.
