ICC Shifts Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 to UAE

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 will be hosted by the UAE. The event will be staged in Dubai and Sharjah between October 03 and 20.

With the current situation in Bangladesh, the hosting of the event will be impossible, notably after travel advisories from different countries against visiting Bangladesh.

It was also the unanimous view of the Board members/ directors who attended the virtual meeting on August 20. Despite Bangladesh agreeing to the shift, they will continue to be the official host of the tournament.

“I’d find it hard to fathom playing there [in Bangladesh] at the moment, as a human being, I feel like it might be the wrong thing to do,” Healy said. “(That would be) taking resources away from a country that is really struggling. They are needing everyone they can possibly get in there helping people that are dying.”

“There are obviously bigger factors at play than putting a cricket tournament on in Bangladesh at the moment … but I’ll leave it to the ICC to work out,” the Australia women’s team captain Alyssa Healy.

After BCCI refused the ICC’s offer to host the event, the ICC was left with limited options. Although Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka expressed their desire to host the tournament, UAE has been the choice for several reasons including the weather and time zone.

While speaking about moving the tournament sports governing body CEO Allardice said, “It is a shame not to be hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh as we know the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would have staged a memorable event.”

“I would like to thank the team at the BCB for exploring all avenues to try and enable the event to be hosted in Bangladesh, but travel advisories from the governments of a number of the participating teams meant that wasn’t feasible. However, they will retain hosting rights. We look forward to taking an ICC global event to Bangladesh in the near future.”

In 2021, the Men’s T20 World Cup was set to be hosted in India, but the matches were staged in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The women’s T20 World Cup will be the same case in which BCB will be the host with the matches staged in UAE.

Bangladesh has been grappled with domestic violence by students which made it impossible for the recent takeover government to bring in peace within the time. During the board meeting, it was suggested that hosting the event in a country that was inflicted by violence may not be appropriate.

“I’d also like to thank the Emirates Cricket Board for stepping in to host on behalf of the BCB and Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe for their generous offers of support, and we look forward to seeing ICC global events in both of those countries in 2026,” concluded ICC CEO Geoff Allardice.

Nic Maddinson Joins Sydney Thunder for BBL 2025

The former Melbourne Renegades captain Nic Maddinson will be joining Sydney Thunder for BBL 2025 on a one-year deal. The left-hand batter has played three tests and 6 T20Is for Australia and will be returning to Sydney after six years in Melbourne franchises.

The 32-year-old was part of the Sydney Sixers, which won the Big Bash League title in 2012. Maddinson has scored 2046 runs which includes 10 fifties. He also joined the New South Wales Blues ahead of the 2024/25 season.

After David Warner signed a deal with Thunder, the addition of Maddinson will bolster the top order in the squad. He will be playing alongside England WK-keeper Sam Billings and rising star Ollie Davies at the Thunder.

“(I’m) looking forward to coming back to Sydney,” said Maddinson on joining the club. “The squad that we’ve got is going to be really competitive. It’s a good mix of older players, and having a younger crop of players coming through is really exciting.

“The goal for myself is to be consistent, find a gameplan that works, and slot into the Thunder batting line-up for a full season. Hopefully (I can) learn some stuff about T20 but also teach a few things I’ve learned along the way,” concluded Maddinson.

Thunder completed the last season at the bottom of the table as they won only one out of ten games and will be looking for a comeback in the upcoming season. meanwhile, Sydney Thunder General Manager Trent Copeland said that Maddison’s addition will bring further depth and experience to the batting side.

“‘Maddo’ has been around the game a long time and has played international cricket,” Copeland said. “Everyone knows what he can do with the bat, but what is also really exciting is what he can bring in terms of experience and leadership in any part of a match or the season as a whole.

“We expect to be challenging for the BBL title this season and Maddo, as someone who has won a BBL, is a big part of those plans.”

The Sydney Thunder have one domestic and two overseas player spots to fill ahead of BBL|14. Sydney Thunder will be playing their first match against Perth Scorchers on January 03 at Optus Stadium.

Ben Stokes’ absence adds Extra Edge for Sri Lanka in England Tests

Sri Lankan players are aiming to make an impact in the upcoming test series against England as the captain Ben Stokes has been ruled out due to injury.

The England skipper sustained a hamstring injury during The Hundred 2024 tournament. His absence will mark the first inception of England’s dynamic ‘Bazball’ approach which they adopted two years ago under coach Brendon McCullum.

With his absence, Ollie Pope will be captain of the side even though he has led county team Surrey in just one FC match. England announced their team on Monday, with fast bowler Matthew Potts recalled as decided to go in with a five-man attack.

Meanwhile, Dan Lawrence has been deployed as an opener in county cricket and will be returning to the national side for the first time in two and half years after Zak Crawley’s fingered fracture which left a slot in the top order.

Crawley sustained his injury during the third test against West Indies on home ground last month.

“I think that’s the style of cricketer that Baz McCullum and Ben Stokes are generally after and my general way of going about it is to try and be quite aggressive,” Lawrence said Monday.

“Throughout my whole career I’ve played a certain brand of cricket and that has served me well so I’m just going to do the same thing. I’m just going to go out there and try to be as free as possible,” concluded Dan Lawrence.

On the other hand, Sanath Jayasuriya opened up about his expectations on the England tests.  “We have an experienced batting order,” said Jayasuriya.

“Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dinesh Chandimal — they have all played a lot of cricket.” This year will mark the 40th anniversary of Sri Lanka’s test in England, a match where Sidath made a superb one of several hundred for the tourists in a draw at Lord’s.

“The fact that we have got a late-summer tour is great,” he said. “It’s more similar to our conditions than the early summer tours.” The first match of the test series will start on August 21 at Old Trafford Cricket Ground.

“I Could Still be Playing T20 Cricket” Steve Smith Eyes on Playing in LA 2028 Olympics

0
Steve Smith
Steve Smith (image: x)

The Australian batter Steven Smith has been eyeing representing Australia at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles with T20 likely to be a format and revealed that he has no retirement plans in mind.

Recently Smith signed a three-year deal with Sydney Sixers in the BBL, indicating that he will be playing professional cricket until 2026-27. But he would need to give a comeback if he needed to be part of Australia’s T20 setup as he eyes the LA Olympics after being omitted for this year’s T20 World Cup.

I could still be playing T20 cricket in four years, so you never know,” he said. “It’s a format I can see myself playing probably for a lot longer than some of the others, especially with the franchise stuff around the world. I’ve signed on here for three years so it’s only another year after that. It would be cool to be part of an Olympics.”

But while speaking about playing in international formats, it remains uncertain for Smith. “I don’t have any plans,” he said. “I’m just enjoying playing at the moment, I’m pretty relaxed and looking forward to this summer.”

Smith will be returning to the ODI in England next month before the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Amid the questions of whether he will remain as Australia’s Test opener, Smith is relishing the prospect of facing India over a five-match series.

Steve Smith

With a highly expected Border Gavaskar Trophy which hasn’t been played in in five tests since 1991-92, Australia are aiming to regain the Border Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in ten years, as they lost the series against India in 2014-15 series.

“You can’t really hide in a five-Test series like you probably can in a two-match series for instance,” Smith said. “If someone gets the wood on you, it can be hard coming back from that. It’s going to be a wonderful series.

“We are probably the two best teams at the moment in Test cricket. We played the World Test Championship final last year and beat them there. They’ve been great out here the last couple of times, they’ve played really good cricket, hopefully, we can turn the tables. It’s been ten years since we last won the Border-Gavaskar trophy so need to do that this year.”

While speaking about his batting position, Smith said, “I’m happy to bat anywhere. Batting at four, I could be in after the first two balls. I’ve been in early on many occasions and faced the new ball.”

Australia has to retain the batting order they had before David Warner’s retirement in January, Smith will be opening against the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj.

Smith who is nearing 10000 runs this summer, was elevated up in the order when he revealed his desire to play in the top order. Smith scored 171 runs in four tests at 28.50 including an unbeaten 91 runs against West Indies.

“The conversations I’ve had so far is that we’ll go to England… I’m there for the one-dayers, then make a decision after that,” he said.

“There’s conversations happening in the background. You see some comments that guys like Usman [Khawaja] have said he likes me down at No. 4, think Marnus is of a similar thought pattern. We’ll wait and see. I’m happy to bat anywhere.

“For me, it’s just a position. Batting at four, I could be in after the first two balls. I’ve been in early on many occasions and faced the new ball. For me, it’s kind of just a number. I batted at three for a long period of time as well and we lost wickets inside the first over and I’ll come out and score runs.”

“The only real thing I had to get used to was how quick a turnaround it is when you come off the field and you only have ten minutes, particularly with the amount of mucking around I have in the changing rooms.”

With being named in the Australia ODI squad for the England tour, he is set to feature in international cricket after six months. The first match of the ODI series is set to begin on September 11 at The Ageas Bowl.

Jonny Bairstow Set to Make Yorkshire Return in County Championship

0
Jonny Bairstow
Jonny Bairstow (image: ECB)

The England Wk-Batter Jonny Bairstow is set to make his return for Yorkshire in the upcoming County Championship match against Sussex. Bairstow’s participation has been limited due to his international commitments and the Indian Premier League.

He has played only two FC games for Yorkshire since 2020 and has not yet featured in any format this season. He is set to return to red-ball cricket in domestic leagues after a six-week break.

Jonny lost his place in England’s test squad after playing his 100th test during the India tour. The management has considered Jamie Smith as the new long-term wicketkeeper.

After a low performance in the India test tour and the Ashes, he was not selected for England’s home season. He smashed only three fifties in 19 innings and failed to record double-digit scores four times.

Jonny Bairstow‘s stint in the middle order in the T20I setup has ups and downs as he completed The Hundred 2024 campaign with only one fifty in seven matches.

While needing a big comeback, the Wk-batter is set to feature for Yorkshire in the upcoming Division Two clash against Sussex and will be available until the end of the season.

The Yorkshire head coach Ottis Gibson said, “I spoke to Jonny, and he still has ambitions of getting back into the England team. When he was coming back from his injury last year, our medical team and coaches – everybody associated with the club – helped him get back into the England fold.”

“If it’s that we need to do that again with him, give him some love and get him into a position where he puts good performances in, everybody benefits from that. Jonny Bairstow is a serious cricketer anyway, but when he has a point to prove, he’s even more dangerous. Hopefully, we can take advantage of that,” he added.

After he recovered from a shoulder injury, Bairstow will play in Yorkshire’s upcoming clash, but his availability for the last four matches of the season is yet to be finalized.

“Well, you don’t need to ask me that, do you? I think you know me well enough, and you’ve known me for long enough to know that all I want to do is play for England,” told Bairstow to Vaughan on the sidelines of The Hundred 2024.

ECB managing director Rob Key has also stated that Bairstow needs his best version of himself if he wants to earn a comeback.

Samoa’s Darius Visser Breaks Yuvraj Singh’s Record; Scores 39 Runs in an Over

Samoa batter Darius Visser has shattered Yuvraj Singh’s record of most runs in an over as he scored 39 runs in an over during the T20 World Cup East Asia-Pacific Region Qualifier game in Apia.

This will be the most runs scored in a single over in T20I history, going past the tally of 36 runs which has been achieved five times before in the format. The feat was achieved in the 15th over of the first innings bowled by Vanuatu’s Nalin Nipiko which included three no-balls.

The first three balls were delivered over deep midwicket by Visser for three sixes after which Nipiko delivered a front-foot no-ball. The free hit was gone for a six over the legside.

The following ball was a dot ball when Visser hit the ball straight which went to the stumps at the non-striker’s end. Nipiko overstepped again, only to follow it up with a no-ball for height that was pulled by Visser for six.

The last ball of the over was a low full toss outside off stump that Visser expertly flicked over deep square leg to have a total score of 39 runs in an over.

previously, a high score of 36 runs in an over has been achieved five times in the history of cricket. In 2007, Indian batter Yuvraj Singh became the first man to achieve it by hitting six sixes against England’s Stuart Broad.

Later it was achieved by West Indies player Kieron Pollard against Sri Lanka in 2021 and Nepal’s Dipendra Singh Airee in 2024.

Nicholas Pooran has also scored 36 runs in an over not with sixes, but with extras during the match against Afghanistan in T20 World Cup 2024. Meanwhile, Indian pair Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh have combined their scores to post 36 runs against Afghanistan in 2024.

Visser smashed 14 sixes in the innings which was the fifth highest of all time, to score a T20I century. Visser had an individual score of 132 runs by Visser, out of the team total of 174, which also makes him take the top spot for the highest percentage of runs in a single T20I innings.

He surpassed the previous record of 75.1% achieved by Aaron Finch by contributing 75.86% of the team’s score. He also picked a wicket as Samoa defended the total restricting Vanuatu to 164 runs.

Steve Smith Inks Three-Year Deal with Sydney Sixers

The Australian batter Steven Smith has signed a three-year deal with Sydney Sixers and will be available for the tournament between the end of the Border Gavaskar Trophy and the test tour against Sri Lanka which starts on January 21.

The test opener will be joining Australian teammate Marnus Labuschagne in BBL 14 who re-signed with Brisbane Heat. meanwhile, test wicketkeeper Alex Carey has also signed a four-year deal to remain with Adelaide Strikers until the end of BBL 17.

Notably, the retired opener David Warner also returns to Sydney Thunder this summer and will be playing his first full BBL season. The inclusion of the Australian stars could give a huge boost to the competition with the ticket sales for the league’s 14th season released at midday today.

“I don’t have any plans. I’m just enjoying playing at the moment, I’m pretty relaxed and looking forward to this summer. India’s going to be a great challenge, they are a very good side, think we are probably the two best Test teams in the world going head-to-head over five Tests. I’m excited by that,” said Smith.

Smith was a member of the Sixers side that won the first edition of the BBL 2012 but had been available for only a few matches in the last two seasons. He was the first male Sydney Sixers player to score a century.

“Steve is a Sixer through and through and has been part of the club since the very beginning (in BBL|01).”

“It’s a sign of significant commitment on his part to sign on with the club for the next three years and we couldn’t be happier to have him on board long-term,” concluded Sixers general manager Rachael Haynes.

Steve Smith has also expressed his hope of returning to IPL after next year after going unsold in the 2022 and 2024 auctions. “I’d certainly love another opportunity at IPL. I’ll be throwing my name in the hat, and we’ll see how we go,” said Smith.

“I feel like in every opportunity I’ve had in T20 cricket recently and franchise stuff, I’ve played quite nicely. So hopefully I just keep putting my name up there and enjoying it.”

David Warner is set to be available for the first full BBL season after re-signing a two-year deal with Sydney Thunder.

After retiring from international cricket, David Warner will be joining his former Australian teammates Steve Smith (Sydney Sixers), Marnus Labuschagne (Brisbane Heat), and Alex Carey (Adelaide Strikers) who will be signing new deals today.

The Long-term commitment of several Australian stars in a single season will boost the popularity and confidence in the competition as ticket sales for the league will go online at midday.

Warner has never played more than six BBL games in a single season due to his national commitments. But this is set to change this summer as he announced his retirement by the end of the T20 World Cup in June.

Sydney Thunder Squad: Wes Agar, Cameron Bancroft, Sam Billings (direct overseas signing), Oliver Davies, Matt Gilkes, Chris Green, Liam Hatcher, Sam Konstas, Nathan McAndrew, William Salzmann, Daniel Sams, Jason Sangha, Tanveer Sangha, David Warner

The Thunder have confirmed the 37-year-old will be available for their entire season from the first match Against Adelaide Strikers in Canberra on December 17.

“I’ve always been part of the Thunder,” said Warner. “I really liked the environment last year (at the Thunder), I gelled back with the boys and I just love playing cricket.”

The addition of Warner will boost the top-order strength and the veteran left-hander is expected to partner former Australian opening partner Cameron Bancroft. Recently, the club has signed Sam Billing on a three-year deal as their pre-draft overseas signing.

The Sydney Thunder general manager Trent Copeland said, “Davey is popular wherever he plays, right around the world, particularly in India and I know the South Asian communities in Sydney’s west will get right behind him at Thunder.”

“In Davey, we get a world-class talent with almost 20 years of T20 experience and now that he has retired from international cricket, we can count on his full focus and commitment for the entire tournament, including the finals.
