Yorkshire Signs Jack White on a Two-Year Deal

Yorkshire have signed seamer Jack White on a two-year contract after activating a clause in his contract allowing him to move to a Division One club. The 32-year-old made his debut in 2020 and has a strong record, in red-ball cricket picking 114 wickets.

“I’m incredibly honoured and extremely excited to begin this new chapter with Yorkshire,” White said.

“Headingley is a special place to play and having had discussions with the coach and the leaders of the club I’m looking forward to continuing to develop my game and playing my part in achieving success for Yorkshire.”

Yorkshire finished second in division two last season, securing a return to the top flight for the first time since 2022. Recently, Anthony McGrath took over the role of Yorkshire head coach replacing the outgoing head coach Ottis Gibson.

“We’re delighted Jack has committed his future to Yorkshire. He is a brilliant addition to the team – offering up another dimension to our bowling attack,” said Gavin Hamilton.

“He’s someone who puts in the hard work and came into the professional game at a later stage of his development. He is the kind of player and person who will continue to add to our dressing room, and we look forward to working with him at the club.”

Northamptonshire said they were disappointed to lose White, who was under contract till the end of the 2025 season.

“While it is a real shame that Jack has decided to move elsewhere, everyone would like to thank him for his efforts in a Northamptonshire shirt and we wish him the best moving forward,” chief executive, Ray Payne, added.

Afro-Asia Cup Likely to Revive After Almost Two Decades

The Africa Cricket Association (ACA) is planning to revive the Afro-Asia Cup, a series of White ball matches played between Asian Xl and African Xl.

The Board’s continental body held its AGM on Saturday and appointed a six-person interim committee to restructure the ACA and increase the number of competitive opportunities for players on the continent.

“The Afro-Asia Cup, apart from the cricket, brings the much-needed financial input to the organisation, and the appetite is huge from both ends,” said Zimbabwe Cricket Chair Tavengwa Mukuhlani.

“We have had conversations with our counterparts within the Asia Cricket Council, and obviously our African contingents, they want the Afro-Asia Cup to be revived.”

It is learned that no formal request has been made to the ACC, nor has any discussion around this taken place at the body’s recent meeting in Malaysia. In 2005, the three-match ODI series was shared 1-1 after a rained-out final game, and in 2007, the Asia Xl won all three matches.

The ACA is also planning to launch a ‘mini version of the IPL,’ said CEO Cassim Suliman calling it the Africa Premier League, despite it remaining in the planning phase.

“We are planning to, after board approval, bring the Africa Premier League. That’s what we’re busy with at the moment on the sponsorship. Once that comes together, we will go to the board, the board will okay it, and then we will take it from there,” he said.

“It’s the mini vision of the IPL. So we’re taking that concept of the IPL and driving that concept to ensure that everybody benefits in that aspect. As far as where we’re going to play, the board will decide.”

“We’re going to look at facilities that are going to warrant spectator viewership. It’s still at the initial stage. Obviously, we want to do things right the first time to make sure we get the ball rolling on it.”

“But the board will decide exactly who’s hosting and from there, we’ll take it to them from there. It’s going to be like the IPL format, but with a lower status and then we’ll grow it from there.”

There is currently only one franchise tournament in Africa, South Africa’s SA20, but Mukuhlani was hopeful that a South African franchise could be involved in the Africa Premier League and committed Zimbabwean players to the proposed tournament.

“The participation of South Africa and Zimbabwe gives context to the competition, and there is also the experience that the upcoming teams get from playing alongside players from South Africa and Zimbabwe,” he said. “So yes, we will participate,” said Mukuhlani.

Basit Ali Praises Babar Azam’s Elite Batting on 1st ODI Against Australia

Former cricketer Basit Ali has applauded batter Babar Azam for his batting display during the first ODI of the Pakistan tour of Australia 2024 at Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Being impressed by his skills in the field Basit stated it was a ‘Top class’ performance. After stepping down as Pakistan white ball skipper, Babar Azam has been criticized for his form and has also been ruled out for the second and third tests of England tests at home.

But he was added to the Pakistan squad for the Australia ODIs and also smashed 37 runs from 44 deliveries at a strike rate of 84.09 in the first game. However, he was dismissed in the 18th over, when Adam Zampa removed him from the crease.

While speaking on the YouTube channel, Basit Ali said that Babar Azam is in good form and added that his performance displayed his hunger for runs.

“Babar Azam looked in good form. His way of playing was top-class. Unfortunately, he played Adam Zampa off the back foot on a ball that he should have played on the front foot.”

“His foot movement and how hungry he was for runs were good signs. It was something that he had been lacking across formats. After many years, I felt Babar Azam did top-class batting,” Basit said.

Batting first, Pakistan’s Rizwan, Naseem Shah and Babar Azam were the run scorers helping the side to propel for 203 runs in the first innings.

Mitchell Starc led the bowling attack picking three wickets in his 10-over spell and conceding 33 runs in the match. Adam Zampa and Pat Cummins also picked two wickets each in their respective spells.

During the run chase, Australia struggled to score runs but managed to clinch a win. Steve Smith (44 runs) and Josh Inglis (49 runs) helped Australia to add some crucial runs on the scoreboard.

In the end, Pat Cummins gave 32 runs to the board and stayed unbeaten along with Mitchell Starc to defeat Pakistan by two wickets in the first ODI match. The second ODI match will be played on November 08 at Adelaide Oval.

Hazlewood Worries on India’s Defeat Against NZ Ahead of Border Gavaskar Trophy

    0
    Josh Hazlewood
    Josh Hazlewood (image: X)

Australia pacer Josh Hazlewood feels that India might awaken by the shocking defeat in the test series against New Zealand and believes that India can mount a strong comeback in the Border Gavaskar Trophy starting this month.

India suffered a humiliating series whitewash after losing the final match of the third match by 25 runs to New Zealand in Mumbai on Sunday, the first time in their test history which goes back to 1933.

“It might awaken a sleeping giant, so to speak. We’ll see that when they come out,” said Hazlewood.

The test defeat at home has made a significant impact on Rohit Sharma’s side’s chances for qualifying in next year’s WTC finals. After consecutive losses, India lose their top spot to Australia in the WTC points tables.

India has to go on a tough task of winning four of their five matches against Australia to qualify for their third consecutive WTC final without relying on other match results.

    India Cricket team
    India Cricket team (image: X)

“It’s better for them to lose 3-0 than win 3-0, easily. The confidence might have taken a bit of a hit. A lot of them have been out here, but there are a few batters who haven’t, so they’ll be a bit unsure of what to expect,” Hazlewood said.

“I don’t think you can read too much into it. The results are obviously good for us in a way,” said Hazlewood.

“Credit to the Kiwi boys. They played outstanding cricket. To win 3-0 in India is unbelievable. It’s hard enough to win one game there, let alone every match of the series,” Hazlewood said.

Everything’s falling into place. It’s just a huge series. Every time we play India, it’s right up there with the Ashes,” he added.

“I think the crowds will be massive. I think the TV ratings could be huge. (There is talk) it could be the biggest ever.” said the Australian pacer.

“I pretty much got out what I needed … very happy with how I bowled. Body felt surprisingly good. The longer I went, I think the better that I felt, and the rhythm was there,” he added.

The five-match test series will kickstart on November 22 while the second test will be played on a day-night format under the stadium lights starting on December 06.

The third test will be played in the Gabba which will be held between December 14-18. The fourth test will be played between December 26-30 at Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The fifth and final test at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3-7 will give a promising dramatic conclusion for the exciting contest.

Phil Salt To Keep Wickets for West Indies T20Is

    0
    Phil Salt
    Phil Salt (image: X)

Phil Salt has been named as the wicketkeeper for the T20I series on the England tour of West Indies 2024. If he takes over the wicketkeeping duties, it is evident that Buttler will placed on the field.

White ball captain Jos Buttler who has played 108 T20 internationals has kept wickets in 106 matches fielding only in the two matches that took place in Trinidad during England’s previous tour of the Caribbean in December 2023.

Salt has kept wickets in 13 of his 59 games for England across formats and has been given the gloves in this current ODI series ahead of Jordan Cox, who will be keeping wickets in Test keepers for the upcoming series in New Zealand.

“It’s not something I’ve done a lot for England recently,” Salt said in Barbados ahead of the third ODI. “But I enjoy keeping. I feel like that’s where I offer most to the side.”

Meanwhile, Buttler has been out for several months due to calf strain. But if he had been fit to play the T20 series against Australia in September, Salt would have kept wickets with Buttler having been fielded in different positions.

“I was going to give up the gloves and commit to being at mid-off and see how that felt. If it will help me with my captaincy it is something I am open to,” said Buttler.

Buttler arrived in the Caribbean region on Sunday and started training at Kensington Oval on Monday.

He is not available for selection for the deciding ODI match and will resume his duties ahead of the five-match T20I series that starts on Saturday, making his first appearance since England’s defeat in the T20 World Cup semifinals in June.

“We’ve not had that chat about anything going forward. I’m just glad to be doing it at the moment,” said Salt.

Salt made scores 18 and 59 in the first two ODIs and helped England secure victory in the second match to level the series.

After England had been bowled out for 209 in the first match, Liam Livingstone has been criticised for his performance.

“When anybody’s at their best they’re aggressive and smart,” he said. “They go hand in hand – they have to if you’re going to have any success in white-ball cricket.

“I know I could have got more runs. I think for myself it’s how do I drop the strike rate and pump the average… prolonging my innings and extending partnerships. Those are two of the most important things in 50-over cricket.”

Salt’s first experience of 50 over cricket since the tour of the Caribbean in December last year. With the Hundred being played at the same time as the One-day Cup during the England summer.

“I don’t think there’s many players in this team that you could go through and go ‘oh they’re doing a great job right now’. That’s the reality of it because we’ve not played a lot of 50-over cricket.

“I’d love something like a domestic 50-over competition. I’d love the opportunity to play in that so you can get the rhythm and it’s not always stop-start. But that’s what we’ve got. As a player, you’ve got to adapt.”

The T20I series is set to begin on November 10 following the completion of the decider ODI on November 06 at Kensington Oval, Barbados.

The Role of Grassroots Tournaments in Nurturing Indian Cricket Clubs

    0
    Nurture grassroots tournaments

A love for cricket runs through the veins of Indians. It’s not merely a sport reserved for weekends; it features in the small talk of your average conversation. While cricket has been the most popular sport in India for many years, it’s strengthening in important ways, starting from the local and community clubs. We must recognise the grassroots level’s integral role in nurturing talent from the ground up to place India’s cricket on the international stage.

From a club perspective, maintaining involvement in grassroots tournaments is pivotal to accessing facilities and funding while supporting your players to reach scout exposure. For grassroots organisers, running tournaments is a nourishment of the community and a contribution to the nation’s sporting success. Grassroots tournaments are expanding their reach, too, with more clubs than ever involved on a grassroots level. This is partly because it doesn’t take much these days to promote a tournament – jump online, use an online logo maker to create a poster and spread the word to maintain healthy competition and interest in their tournaments.

Beyond gathering interest, grassroots academies work hard to facilitate games, club development and funding essential to keep cricket alive and well on the local level. In this article, we’ll explore their role in nourishing Indian cricket clubs.

Cricket in India spiked in popularity in the 1970s and 80s. Suddenly, every child and adult wanted to grab a bat and hit the field. The demand for structured training, clubs and local competition increased, which led to the rise of grassroots academies. These academies weren’t solely for teaching the basics of the game, but also for fostering club spirit, and athletes’ personal development through discipline and running tournaments that provide local cricket clubs with drive and progression.

    Infrastructure and facilities

Grassroots tournaments prop up Indian cricket clubs through the infrastructure they provide for training and games. It takes a lot of space and maintenance to sustain a cricket oval. Luckily, the structure of grassroots cricket means the physical space and resources are provided for young athletes to engage in cricket, receive proper training and grow their skills.

Since grassroots academies have the means to provide quality facilities, participation and overall development of Indian cricket clubs are high, offering these clubs and individual athletes the best chance to succeed.

    Talent scouting

India spends approximately 87% of its sports funding on cricket. While no club wants to lose their players, there is ample opportunity for athletes to create successful careers, and seeing them progress to advanced leagues is the goal of many grassroots coaches.

Grassroots tournaments are integral hubs for talent scouts to attend games and watch young players. Scouts aim to identify prodigious talents from a young age, and then nurture them in the right direction to help them reach their full cricket potential. Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli are two key examples of players spotted by scouts, who went on to have major success on the international level.

    Funding and sponsorship

Opportunities for many Indian athletes come from funding and sponsorship. While it’s sustainable for young athletes to attend training and matches, it’s much harder to invest in their own personal development through specialist training programs. Securing funding and sponsorship through grassroots academies and sports managers on higher levels is key to nourishing Indian cricket clubs and young players.

    Mentorship

Grassroots tournaments provide direct access to experienced coaches, mentors and people who are genuinely passionate and knowledgeable about cricket. Coaches teach, guide and nourish young players, some of whom begin not knowing the rules, while others might need more advanced and progressive coaching. This type of direct mentorship is invaluable for all players.

In addition, club seniors can receive mentorship through grassroots tournament organisers. If they’re challenged with how to improve their club’s direction or specific athlete guidance, they have access to a range of other coaches who could assist.

    Competition drives motivation

People across India compete in grassroots leagues because of their love for the sport. Without the aspect of competing against other clubs, there is little to aim for aside from scoring a six against their friends. Grassroots tournaments help cricket clubs get the best out of their team and provide an avenue for structured training that aligns with upcoming tournament matches.

Alongside this, players are driven to increase their fitness level, skills, mental strength and personal development to perform as well as possible in these tournaments and when they come up against rival clubs. This type of healthy competition helps teams diversify their strategy when playing against a range of clubs with various strengths and limitations.

    Strengthening coaching education

Dedicated coaches and club seniors are fundamental to grassroots sports’ development. Without their support, cricket clubs couldn’t form and compete. However, some of these coaches can feel out of their depth at times or need additional support to help them manage their club as best they can. Grassroots tournaments offer mentorship to coaches to upgrade their skills, including the latest coaching strategies, updated rules and how to nurture their players effectively.

Grassroots tournaments have been crucial to the growth of cricket in India and the nurturing of Indian cricket clubs for decades. Through facilities, funding, mentorship and competition that drives club and player progress, grassroots tournaments build Indian cricket from the ground up. With the unrivalled popularity of the sport as well as advanced leagues like the NCL and IPL, young clubs and athletes now have more opportunities than ever. This makes grassroots tournaments even more valuable and essential for the future of the sport.

In a shocking development, the Mizoram Football Association has banned 24 players, three clubs and 3 officials has been banned by the Mizoram Football Association for alleged match-fixing in a recently held state competition.

Three clubs namely Sihphir Venghlun FC, FC Bethlehem and Ramhlun Athletic FC have been banned with three match officials for allegedly manipulating the outcome of matches in the Mizoram Premier League.

The state football body stated that “It has come to the notice of the Mizoram Football Association, after investigations with local law enforcement agencies that certain clubs, officials and players in the recently concluded MPL-11 had indulged in acts of corruption, for which they have been penalised after careful deliberations.”

The MFA imposed life bans on two players, five-year bans on four players, three-year bans on footballers, and one-year bans on eight men involved in the alleged corruption.

“These activities involving a few miscreants represent a severe breach of our values, undermine the integrity of our sport and disrespect the fans who passionately support Mizoram Football,” read the MFA statement.

“As a consequence of these findings, we have imposed strict penalties on those involved.”

“We also assure stakeholders that clubs found to be complicit in these activities will face sanctions affecting their participation in future competitions, and players and officials implicated will be subject to suspensions and other disciplinary measures deemed appropriate by the MFA,” it added in the statement.

The three clubs are all part of the top state league and Siphir finished among the top four, losing out in the semi-finals to winners Aizawl FC.

MFA added, “We call upon football fans, partners, and the broader football community to stand with us as we address this challenging chapter.”

The association admitted that the scandal could impose damage on the league and forced its commitment to move forward with transparency and integrity.

Sunil Gavaskar Wants Bumrah to Captain India for Border Gavaskar Trophy

With speculations rising over Rohit Sharma‘s availability for the first test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy, Sunil Gavaskar urges selectors to proactively name Jasprit Bumrah as the captain for the entire series.

This development comes after Rohit Sharma is likely to miss one of the first two tests against Australia for personal reasons. Reports indicate that Rohit Sharma is expecting a second child, which could potentially sideline him for the Perth opener.

The excitement is evident as the fiercest rivals will be clashing once again in the highly anticipated Border Gavaskar Trophy. After a 0-3 home series whitewash at the hands of New Zealand, Gavaskar proposed that the Indian team must be united under one captain for the entire series.

He stated that the vice-captain should be made the captain for the entire series. “We have been reading that Rohit Sharma will not play in the first Test, perhaps he will not play in the second as well.”

“If this is the case, then I say that, right now, the Indian selection committee should say that ‘if you have to rest, rest, if there are personal reasons then look at them.”

“But if you are missing two-thirds of the matches then you should go for this tour only as a player. We will make the vice-captain the captain of this tour’,” said Sunil Gavaskar.

“Indian cricket is the most important. I would say that if we had won the New Zealand series 3-0, it would have been a different matter. Because we have lost this series 3-0, there is a need for a captain.”

“The captain has to unite the team. If there is no captain in the beginning, it is better to make someone else the captain,” Sunil Gavaskar further added.

Previously, Bumrah captained India in a test against England in 2022 where three Lions chased down the target of 378 and won the match by seven wickets.

India must need a huge margin win in the series if they have to qualify for the WTC finals. Australia and India are in the top two positions in the WTC points table and the series win by any team could possibly have a major impact on the table.
