Afghanistan Cricket Board has retained Mirwais Ashraf as their chairman for the next three years. As per the report, a top official of ACB confirmed the development to sports media on Friday on a request not to be named.

Mirwais Ashraf was appointed as the chairman of the ACB in 2021 and was expected to end his tenure in August 2023.

“Due to his performance for the last three years, the Taliban government extended Mirwais Ashraf’s new term as the chairman of the Afghanistan Cricket Board for three more years,” said the ACB official.

“Look stability is key to our success and we try to value it. During the last three years we had one chairman, one CEO and one coach and we changed our captain only once as we feel that if we want to develop as a cricketing nation we need to put major focus on stability and don’t try to go for chopping and changing,” he added.

The former Afghanistan all-rounder Ashraf has represented Afghanistan in 46 ODIs and 25 T20Is. Ashraf made his ODI debut against the Netherlands at the VRA Cricket Ground on August 30, 2009.

He had also made his First-Class debut against the same team in Afghanistan’s debut match in the Intercontinental Cup, wherein in the second inning, he took 4/24 to help Afghanistan register a historic win by one wicket.

He was part of the Afghanistan squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, where he has had some outstanding performances with the bat and ball. He was also appointed as Afghanistan’s ICC Ambassador for the Cricket World Cup 2019 in England and Wales.

Stumps and Bails Price in Cricket, From Old to New

Stumps and Bails Price (image: Facebook)

Stumps and Bails Price: In recent years, Cricket has been influenced by technology with some innovations like Hawk-eye, Decision Review System (DRS), Snickometer and Hot Spot are just some of the innovations that have helped improve the accuracy of decision-making in cricket.

One of the most important components of the sport is stumps and bails. Traditionally, wooden stumps and bails were used, but the game has evolved with the introduction of LED stumps and Bails.

Wooden Stumps

Cricket wickets are made up of stumps and bails, positioned in the popping in both sides of the crease. In the early days of cricket, only two stumps were used with a long bail which marked a boundary to be protected by Batsman. However, the umpire can’t decide whether the ball went in between two stumps or went out of it.

On May 23, 1775, Lumpy Steven discovered three stumps which is followed till the date. It is way easier to decide whether the ball went through wickets. However, the close call ran out and the ball grazing the stumps has been predicted more accurately in the modern days of cricket with the evolution of the stumps.

Manufacturers of Cricket Stumps and Bails

Across the world, there are many manufacturers but only a few brands are popular and recognized as the brand. Listed below are some of the popular brands of manufacturers of Stumps and Bails.

  • Kookaburra
  • Gray-Nicolls
  • Gunn & Moore (GM)
  • Sherwood
  • C&K.

Different Types of Cricket Stumps

There are several different types of cricket stumps, generally differentiated from each other by the materials that they are made. Each type has its benefits and challenges for players. Listed below are the different types of stumps in cricket.

  • Wooden Cricket Stumps
  • Metal Cricket Stumps
  • Plastic Cricket Stumps
  • LED Stumps
  • Zing Stumps
  • Electra Stumps
Stumps
Price
Base High
Wooden Stumps $30-$60 $250-$500
Metal Stumps $50-$100 $500-$1000
Plastic Stumps $20-$50 $100-$200
LED / Zing / Electra Stumps $500-$1000 $5000-$10000

Wooden Cricket Stumps

Many professional grounds use Wooden Stumps, which are usually made from ash. However, Wooden cricket stumps do have the disadvantage that they’re less hard-wearing than some other types of stumps, and they can be prone to warping over time.

Using high-quality ash wood and varnishing the wood can increase the lifespan of your stumps, but they might also struggle to withstand the rigours of being hit repeatedly by a fast-moving cricket ball.

The Kookaburra Wooden Stumps price varies from 40 – 120 AUD / 27.14 – 81.42 USD / INR 2277.19 – 6831.57.

Metal Cricket Stumps

Metal Stumps are different from wooden ones, as they are usually freestanding and do not need to be hammered into the ground. Despite their durability, metal stumps come as a unit attached with bails to form a complete wicket which means you cannot knock down the bails to the fullest which will lack accuracy.

They also have detachable bails whose price may vary due to various specs. The Kookaburra Metal Tipped Stumps vary from 30 – 100 AUD / 20.35 – 64.84 USD / INR 1708.22 – 5694.07

Plastic Cricket Stumps

Plastic cricket stumps can also withstand a lot of wear and tear and are a better replacement for Wooden stumps. As a more cost-effective option than wooden stumps, Plastic stumps are easy to use for practising their batting or bowling. But they are not used in professional cricket matches.

Various brands like Kookaburra, Gray-Nicolls, Gunn & Moore (GM), Vivian Thomas, and JSS are the popular manufacturers of Stumps, and the price starting 23.04 AUD / 15.63 USD / 1311.91 INR.

LED Cricket Stumps

LED cricket stumps are a better alternative to traditional wooden stumps. They’re perfect for poorer visibility conditions they allow the bowler to see the wicket through the batsman’s legs in poor weather.

IPL stumps Price

These innovative LED stumps were first used in 2013 in the Big Bash League of Australia. In July 2013, the International Cricket Council approved the use of LED stumps in international cricket.

Later, the ICC introduced LED stumps in the 2014 T20 World Cup in Bangladesh which got a positive response in the cricket world. Since then, the ICC has been using these stumps in all major global ICC tournaments.

Meanwhile, the national boards also used these sophisticated stumps for the bilateral series and T20 franchise leagues like the IPL, BBL, and The Hundred.

With various brands manufacturing the stumps and bails, the stump price varies between 14,049.71 – 56198.83 AUD / 9528.23 – 38,112 USD.

Zing Cricket Stumps

These are the set-ups used in the major cricket competitions and internationals nowadays with innovative upgrades. This includes the measures to ensure the wicket in close call encounters like balls brushing them.

Zing Cricket Stumps are the advanced version of the LED Stumps which use sensors while the LED stumps work on basic electronic systems. These stumps will glow when the ball hits the stumps or bails which would help derive the decision quicker and accurately.

With the vary in the quality, location, and manufacturer the price may vary starting from 2450 AUD – 2680 AUD / 1661.54 USD – 1817.52 USD.

Electra Cricket Stumps

The Electra Cricket Stumps is the latest version used in the recently concluded Women’s Big Bash League and lights up differently according to the happenings in the match.

These stumps are equipped with lights that illuminate in various colors and signal different events during a match. When a player is dismissed, the stumps flash red light.

For boundaries such as fours and sixes, the stumps will light up with alternating colors in an upward direction. Meanwhile, no ball will flash a red and white scrolling light, confirming the decision of the on-field umpire.

Bails used in Cricket

A bail is two smaller sticks placed on top of the three stumps to form a wicket. The bails are used to determine when the wicket is broken or put down. The wicket is considered to be broken if one or both of the bails from the stumps or stump are struck out of the ground.

Each Bail is made of a single cylindrically shaped piece of wood which has two smaller cylinders of wood protruding from each end. The larger central cylinder is called the barrel and the smaller protrusions are the spigots.

The spigots are unequal in length with the longer side resting on one stump, while the shorter rests on the middle stump together with the short spigot of the other bail.

Special heavy bails made of denser wood are sometimes used in windy conditions if the normal light bails are likely to be blown off the stumps. The umpire can decide to dispense with the bails completely.

  • Wooden Bails
  • Metal Bails
  • LED Bails
  • Zing Bails

Wooden Bails

Wooden Bails were used from the early years of cricket and were used along with the Wooden Stumps. They are made up of Wood most commonly Ash and together format a wicket at each end of the pitch.

Metal Bails

Mostly Metal stumps have bails attached to them and cannot be detached. Although Metal detachable bails are also used with stumps but not been used widely over these years.

LED Bails

It is an innovation with LED Bails which flash completely when dislodged. They were invented by an Australian engineer and trademarked as LED Bails. They were designed to aid umpires with both run-out and stumping decisions.

With the price differing from the brand, the average price of the LED bails will be between 589 -735.79 AUD / 400- 499 USD.

Zing Bails

Zing Bails are shock absorbing and both water and Sand resistant which are powered by batteries. The Australian company Zing International created the bails with LED lights.

The provider offered a simple and convenient solution by lighting up immediately upon removal, allowing every camera angle to contribute to making accurate decisions. The Zinc bail prices vary from 43.99 AUD – 82.49 AUD.

*The stump and bails price may vary based on different factors such as the quality of the stumps, the manufacturer, and the location.

Top 10 World’s Tallest Cricketers – Height Included

0

World’s Tallest Cricketers: As a die-hard cricket follower, many of us at least for a time might searched the answer for “Does height play a role in a player’s success in cricket“.

But on second thought, we might conclude that height may not be the key factor for a player to be successful but it might add an advantage to them. Many players with average and below-average height have emerged as successful players in this particular sport.

Notably, there is no minimum height requirement for a player to join a cricket team. In cricket, if a player measures considerably high compared to the others, he might have an advantage in tackling the ball while batting, can add extra bounce while bowling, and can swing his arm to an extended height to grab a catch while fielding.

However, height is not the sole determining factor for a player’s success, skill, technique and strategy also play a vital role in a player’s effectiveness.

God of Cricket” Sachin Tendulkar is one of the best examples to justify that height might not be the key factor for a player’s success in cricket.

Indian legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar’s stature is 5’5″ while the average height for Indian cricketers is around 5 feet 6 inches (168 cm) to 5 feet 9 inches (175 cm).

With this height, Sachin Tendulkar scripts various records and went on to score 100 centuries which remains unbroken to date.

Different Types of Stumps and Bails in Cricket

Cricket which is a team sport is the second most-watched sport in the World next to Soccer. Though the origin of cricket was unclear, it is believed to have originated in the late 16th century in England.

The year 1598 marks the first recorded match in Kent, England. Cricket became a popular sport in England in the 1700s and developed globally in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Cricket which has been played for nearly five decades as of now introduced many formats and rules to gain popularity but also stuck with the basic fundamentals in some terms.

Though many changes were made in cricket during its progression, basic elements including the number of players, usage of the bat, ball, stumps, grounds and some other terms remain unchanged.

The usage of the bat will vary from player to player but has to be under the cricket terms and conditions. Cricket balls on the other hand will differ based on the format. To understand it clearly, we have created a separate article under “Different types of balls in cricket“.

In this section, we have listed the different types of stumps and bails in cricket. Cricket stumps have also undergone multiple upgrades with the change in generations.

Stumps and bails will be used as a pair in a cricket match and will not use different sets of stumps with different sets of bails. Moreover, the same model of stumps and bails will be used on both sides of the wicket.

Different Types of Stumps and Bails in Cricket

Cricket which has its roots back in the 15th century uses various models of stumps and bails till date.

Stumps are the three vertical posts that support two bails and they form the wicket. A cricket match will use a couple of wickets on both ends of the pitch. The overall width of each wicket is 9 inches(22.9 cm).

Each stump stands 28 inches(71.1 cm) tall with a maximum and minimum diameter of 3.81 cm and 3.49 cm. The three vertical stumps will have a spike at one end for inserting in the ground and the other end will have a “U-shaped” cut to place the bails over the stumps.

Following are the different types of stumps and Bails used in cricket so far:

Stumps

  • Ash Stumps
  • Willow Stumps
  • Composite Stumps
  • Plastic Stumps
  • Metal Stumps
  • LED Stumps
  • Zing Stumps
  • Electra Stumps

Bails

  • Wooden Bails
  • LED Bails
  • Zing Bails

LED Stumps

Stumps and bails are embedded with red LEDs, which flash when they are completely dislodged. LED stumps are the latest and widely used stumps in cricket matches. LED wickets are made from a composite plastic, which are embedded with LED lights.

Australian mechanical industrial Engineer and inventor Bronte EcKermann invented the LED Stumps.

LED Stumps were first tried out in a club game in Adelaide. Right after Cricket Australia was convinced regarding the usage of LED stumps instead of standard wooden stumps for night matches, the board decided to use the LED Stumps in the 2012 edition of the Big Bash League.

Later the LED Stumps were introduced in international cricket in 2015 during a T20I match between Australia and New Zealand in Brisbane, Australia, on February 12, 2015.

These kinds of stumps provide an assist to the umpires in making their decisions easier. Particularly in the night matches these LED stumps will flash a light to indicate a disturbance in the stumps.

Apart from wicket assistance, these stumps are also stuffed with a camera, mic and some sensors to assist the umpires in making decisions. For professional matches, one or more of the stumps are hallowed and stuffed with a small television camera and a microphone.

These stump cams give a unique view of play for action replays, particularly when a batsman is bowled. LED stumps with audio detectors or mic provide instant indication of wickets, runs, and other game events.

How do LED Stumps Work?

  • LED stumps will incorporate low-voltage batteries in each of the bails and stumps.
  • When a bail is dislodged from the stumps, the sensor detects the movement and sends a signal to the LED lights which inturn flash or glow brightly, indicating a wicket.

Zing Stumps

Stumps with bails that glow when dislodged, making it easier for umpires to make decisions. Zing Stumps uses advanced sensors and algorithms for accurate wicket detection, while LED Stumps rely on basic electronic systems.

In Zing Stumps, the bails light up within 1/1000th second of them being lifted. Zing Stumps provides in-depth game data and analysis. Tracks and displays detailed game data, including ball speed, trajectory, and spin.

How do ZING Stumps Work?

  • The sensors embedded within the stumps will detect even the slightest movement or impact on the stumps and send a signal to the processor.
  • The processor will trigger a bright flash of light from the bail, indicating that the wicket has fallen.

LED lights will be embedded in the stumps and bails This kind of stump uses a unique technology named “Zing” where the bails will emit a bright flash of light when dislodged
When the bails are dislodged, a bright light will flash or glow to indicate a wicket Unlike LED Stumps, no LED lights will be visible on the stumps, the flash will be visible only when the bails are dislodged.
LED Stumps are typically used in high-level cricket matches and professional cricket games. Zing Stumps are designed to be used in all levels of cricket, ranging from club to professional
Unlike normal stumps, a minimal disturbance in the stumps will result in LED flash which provides a clear indication of a wicket, reducing disputes Zing Stumps also provides a high accuracy like LED stumps

Types of Bails in Cricket

As of stumps, various types of bails are also used in cricket matches. The bails are the key factors deciding the fall of the wicket. Types of bails in cricket are as follows.

Wooden Bails

Traditional Bails are typically made from wood, often ash or willow. These bails will have a simpler design with no electronic components. These bails are less expensive than the modern electronic bails. Umpires will confirm the dismissal only when the bails dislodged from the stumps.

Wooden Bails

LED Bails

Unlike traditional bails, LED bails will use electronic components to indicate the dismissal. LED bails will automatically flash a bright light when the ball/player makes a disturbance in the wicket.

LED bails work based on a microcontroller. When the ball hits the wicket, the sensor detects the impact and sends a signal to the microprocessor which in turn confirms the signal and sends another signal to the LED lights which illuminate to indicate a wicket has been taken.

Zing Bails

The lights in Zing Bails flash only when both ends of the bail break contact with the stumps, which makes it extremely clear regarding the dismissal. The Australian company Zing International created the bails with LED lights called Zing Cricket Wicket or Zings.

Zing Bails widely helps the match officials to have a clear view of the exact moment at which the bails were dislodged during the review of the stumping and run-out dismissals.

Umpires had long struggled with the stumping and run-out decisions as it’s never been easy to determine the exact point at which the bails have been dislodged from the stumps.

Though Cricket has adopted Decision Review System(DRS) and many other technologies to decide the outcome, they further increased the need for determining the exact moment at which the bails were removed.

These Zing Bails provide an easy and convenient solution for making the decision. As the bails glow as soon as they are removed, it helps the match officials to confirm the exact impact time.

IPL Stumps Price – What is the Cost of LED Wickets in IPL?

0
IPL stumps Price

IPL Stumps Price: The Stumps and Bails used in the IPL are not cheap and there are a lot of kits the players need to be able to take part in the tournament.

From bats, pads, and gloves to different shoes for bowling and batting, wicket-keeper’s gloves and pads, and the protective gear needed for a player’s different role. The Indian Premier League is the most popular and biggest cricket league across the globe and usually takes place during the summer for two months between March and May.

IPL Stumps Price

The globally renowned league is known for its top-notch infrastructure and television production quality. Over the years, IPL has continuously evolved also advancing the technologies to enhance the tournament’s future.

Beyond the enhancements in production and broadcasting, cricket equipment has also evolved over the years notably the evolution of Stump technology.

LED stumps, introduced a few years ago, became a highlight as they had the feature of being illuminated with red light upon impact by the ball. The LED stumps and Bails were introduced in the Indian Premier League for the first time in 2016.

Invention and Technology of Stumps

A former Australian Grade cricketer and engineer invented the LED Stumps in 2012. He and his business partner, David Leggitwood, founded Zing International in Australia.

He came up with the idea of LED bails after getting inspired by his daughter’s toys, which are similar to a cricket bail and contain LED lights.

The previously used stumps and bails are made from wood, but since the invention of LED stumps, wooden stumps, and bails are used less in international-level crickets.

The LED stumps are made from composite plastic, they are embedded with LED lights, a stump camera, and a microphone. The bails are powered by low-voltage batteries. The bail consists of microprocessors that detect when the bail falls from the stump’s rim.

The bails light up within 1/1000th second once they come in contact with the ball, bat, or any player. Then the microprocessor sends a radio signal to the stumps, which prompts them to light up.

Use of LED stumps

These innovative LED stumps were first used in 2013 in the Big Bash League of Australia. In July 2013, the International Cricket Council approved the use of LED stumps in international cricket.

Later, the ICC introduced LED stumps in the 2014 T20 World Cup in Bangladesh which got a positive response in the cricket world. Since then, the ICC has been using these stumps in all major ICC tournaments across the world.

Meanwhile, the national boards also used these sophisticated stumps for the bilateral series as well as for T20 franchise leagues like the IPL, BBL, and The Hundred.

Cost of LED Stumps

The IPL stump price may vary based on different factors such as the quality of the stumps, the manufacturer, and the location. The IPL stump price varies from INR 10 -35 lakhs, while the LED-equipped bails also have a significant price tag. Price staggered INR 40-50 thousand these bails are one of the most desired equipment in the league.

The costs of the IPL stumps can be attributed to the incorporation of highly precise light sensors. Each set of stumps undergoes various quality checks to ensure flawless performance during matches, for these export-grade stumps.

Why the Stumps in IPL are expensive?

It was a difficult task for a third umpire to decide if the bails were completely dislodged during a close call runout or stumping call.

While the stump price of INR 30 lakhs seems a high cost, it is useful in making accurate decisions in cricket which is valuable in T20 leagues and international cricket.

However, BCCI does not buy Stumps all the time. They have signed a long-term contract with an Australian company Zing International Pte Ltd and lease the wickets for the Indian T20 league and international matches hosted by India.

The cost of LED-enabled stumps, however, differs depending on brands, design, and other factors. Bails used in the domestic league could cost around INR 4,000.

There’s no escaping the fact that technology and innovations come at such an expensive one as long as they give correct decisions.

How Arshdeep Singh’s Final Over in 2023 highlighted the cost of IPL LED Stumps

In the 16th edition of the IPL, Arshdeep Singh bowled the final over against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium where the hosts needed to pull 16 runs to secure the win.

But Arshdeep Singh had other ideas. Mumbai Indians needed 15 from four balls, but the medium fast bowler produced two consecutive yorkers to dismiss Tilak and Nehal Wadhera, who came in as an impact player.

His destructive spell broke two stumps with his fierce deliveries. Reports indicated that these stumps cost INR 24 lakhs.

Similarly during the 31st match of the IPL 2024 played between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), Trent Boult cleaned up KKR batter Sunil Narine and in the process, dismantled a stump.

Gus Atkinson Smashes His Maiden Test Century at Lord’s

Gus Atkinson registered his name to the history of books at the Lord’s Cricket ground as he scored his maiden Test Hundred on August 30 on day 02 of the second test in the Sri Lanka tour of England 2024.

Atkinson has been impressive with bowling skills since his test debut but has also assisted the side with the bat on day 01 as he came into Friday not out on 74. The start from the England star was stunning and it sort of set the tone for him early on.

Sticking to the Bazball method, Atkinson started the day with no measures and 2 consecutive boundaries off Lahiru Kumara, before being adjudged dismissal on the third ball of the day.

However, a review saved him and the England star wouldn’t look back after that. The next two overs from Milan Rathnayake and Kumara saw Atkinson smashing two more boundaries and race into the 90s.

The 93rd over from Kumara would see Atkinson start things with a boundary, before hitting another one to get to score a hundred.

Atkinson came in with England bothering day 01 and quickly helped them consolidate and post a challenging total at Lord’s. Atkinson finally got dismissed after scoring 118 runs off 115 balls, thanks to a smart catch from Rathnayake. His innings consisted of 14 boundaries and 4 sixes.

Some of the shots from Atkinson on Days 01 and 02 of the Lords did get the fans talking because of his similar technique to the great all-rounder Jacques Kallis. Joe Root scored 143 on Day 01, helping the side to score 427 runs in the first innings.

“I’ll tell you why it was good watching Gussy bat at the end, being at the other end when he hit those straight sixes, they were unbelievable. It’s like watching someone like Jacques Kallis play.”

“It was a great little innings from him, and there were some good partnerships along the way and we’ve found ourselves in a really good position now,” Root said in a video uploaded by ECB. By the end of Day 02, Sri Lanka scored 87 runs losing 6 wickets.

“Will Make Any Difference” Johnny Grave Doubts on ICC’s Multi Million Test Fund

0
Johnny Grave

The Cricket West Indies president Johnny Grave feels that the ICC’s multi-million fund to revive the Test cricket will have no impact on the format’s health.

The new ICC chairman Jay Shah wishes to impose the sustenance of Test cricket, for which a 15 million fund has been proposed by the approval of the three big boards CA, BCCI, and ECB.

The fund aims to reinforce Test cricket in nations outside the Big Three to bring a balance against the lopsided state.

The initiative was driven by Cricket Australia chairman Mark Baird and got support from the England Cricket Board (ECB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

There is also a provision in the planned central fund that rewards players with a 10,000-US dollar match fee per appearance. Although Grave appreciated the gesture by the three boards, but feels that the money will not make any difference to test Cricket.

“Cricket as a game needs to think much more as a league and needs to understand everyone’s business models a bit better. I think there are some positive noises from the Big 3, I think the Test fund was a good initiative. I don’t know if US $15 million a year will make any difference to anything,” said Grave.

Grave further revealed that the match fee sum offered according to the central fund is only as much as Cricket West Indies is offering currently.

India Test Cricket Team
India Test Cricket Team(Image: Twitter)

“I think the idea of paying a Test fee of US $10,000 is not even window dressing. We pay our players US $10,000. So, I sort of smiled when I saw that come out in the press. I thought, ‘how is it going to change cricket and how’s that going to be saviour of Test cricket when our players are already getting paid that?’ It’s not going to make any difference to us,” he added.

Johnny Grave will step down from his role as CWI CEO in October 2024, after seven years in charge.

Grave laments the recurring two-match test series, with only three big boards playing dedicated test series exceeding three matches.

“What will make a difference, in my opinion, to improve West Indies Test cricket is by playing more three-match series rather than two-match series, by having dedicated Test windows where you’re not competing against franchise opportunities, or actually supporting our ‘A’ team programs. We’ve really struggled to get ‘A’ team tours,” Grave said.

Johnny Grave admitted that the test fund is not even close to an answer to save the format, he certainly welcomes the Big Three’s thinking to revive the test cricket.

“I welcome the debate and I’m not saying that I or we at West Indies cricket have all the answers, but we welcome the debate, we welcome the slight change in mindset which is the Big 3 can’t just play against themselves, they’ve got to have a stronger opposition,” he concluded.

West Indies has marked their sole three test match series against England in the current WTC cycle where the former suffered a clean sweep defeat in the hands of English men.

“You Leave Out Steve Smith and MS Dhoni” Sanjiv Goenka’s Indirect Message to KL Rahul

Sanjiv Goenka KL Rahul
Sanjiv Goenka - KL Rahul chatting after the match against SRH(Image: X)

The LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka has given an indirect message to LSG captain KL Rahul, by mentioning his time with Rising Pune Supergiants, MS Dhoni and Steve Smith. He blamed KL Rahul and the team management for LSG’s poor decision-making in IPL 2024.

Making their debut in the 2022 season, LSG made it to playoffs in the first two seasons but slipped to the seventh spot in the last edition which made doubts of KL Rahul’s release from the franchise.

Goenka and Rahul had a few meetings since then, but no decision has been made til now. In between Zaheer Khan is set to join LSG for the mentor role. The former Indian pacer will take over the position left open by Gautam Gambhir ahead of IPL 2024.

Goenka felt that LSG lacks an Indian coach like Gambhir to help the side make crucial calls in certain situations.

“Last year, I felt that an Indian mind, you can call him a mentor or anything, who has that fierce desire to win, was lacking a bit. Zaheer, even when he was a player, he was very determined to win. That was his only aim. I want that,” said Goenka.

A video shows his discussion with captain KL Rahul following LSG’s defeat to SRH this year. It was revealed that Goenka dropped hints on dissatisfaction with the team management’s reasoning behind their poor show in the 17th edition.

KL Rahul
KL Rahul (image: x)

“I am not satisfied if someone comes and tells me we played badly today. Then, repeats the same thing the next two days. So I will ask him, ‘Why?’ One player can be off-form, but XI players cannot be off-form every day. The decision-making role that Zaheer can play. The role that Gautam played was lacking last season. So my expectation from Zaheer is to work on that decision-making,” he said.

Goenka owned an IPL team before LSG as they owned RPS in IPL 2016 and 2017 when BCCI wanted two new franchises for two years to replace Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings.

MS Dhoni led RPS in the IPL 2016 and the franchise named Smith as the captain. RPS reached the final of IPL 2017 but failed to chase down 130 against Mumba Indians.

Goenka said it was due to inexperience as a team. “The Super Giants family has been in the IPL for five years. Two of those were with Pune, and three were with Lucknow. When we reached the finals with Pune, it was a new and inexperienced team. You leave out Steve Smith and MS Dhoni, we didn’t have much experience in the team,” he said.

“We were about to win the final, but due to our lack of experience, we lost. So making the right calls in those crunch moments is key.”

Goenka’s no experience in the team, barring Dhoni and Smith, however, is not true as RPS had the likes of Ajinkya Rahane, Manoj Tiwary, Dan Christian, and Jaydev Unadkat in their ranks in the final.

“Mumbai have a habit of winning. Everyone should emulate their never-say-die attitude. It was Pune’s match to win but they lost it by themselves because of the pressure applied by Mumbai. This attitude needs to be there in Lucknow. Otherwise, we would never win. We have to be confident in ourselves,” he said.
