Andrew McDonald Backs Australia Amid ODI Loss Against Pakistan

Head coach Andrew McDonald has backed his side’s play after they lost the second ODI of the Pakistan tour of Australia 2024.

The Australia suffered a 9 wicket defeat in the ODI series decider against Pakistan in Perth but no change to their on field approach despite a chastening defeat at Adelaide Oval.

Despite the absence of five star players for the final game of the three match series at Perth Stadium, Donald firm in the team’s approach to 50 over cricket with one ODI remaining before the ICC Champions Trophy tournament in Pakistan.

Pacers Lance Morris, Spencer Johnson and Xavier Bartlett will be considered for Sunday’s game, with fellow seamer Sean Abbott also set to return along with all-rounder Marcus Stoinis.

“We go to Perth with a clear plan, a clear method,” McDonald said after the loss in Adelaide. We’re committed to the style we want to play.

“The big thing about that is we’ve won 16 out of the last 19 games, and we’ve got some changing personnel within that but we believe in the style we want to play as a group.

“We weren’t at our best tonight, nowhere near our best. Pakistan controlled the game from the get-go and not enough runs to even think about putting pressure on.”

McDonald also heard criticism from some commentators that some of his batter are going too hard, too early in their innings, but not Australia’s shortfall today could be attributed more to Pakistan’s fast bowling than profligate stroke play.

“If you looked at the dismissals today there was some defensive strokes in that,” he said.

“It’s just finding that balance, and we’ve had great success with the style we want to play at the top of the order to make sure we’re putting pressure on opposition bowling units. Sometimes that can work, and over the journey so far it’s served us well.

“We’ve got some new personnel at the top as well … but I think Matt Short in England (earlier this year) showed he’s up to the task.

“He has hasn’t got off to the start he wants in this series, and Jake (Fraser McGurk) is not the finished article either.

“Everyone thinks he may be the finished article, but he’s going on a journey with his career and we believe he’s good enough to play at this level at this point in time. But clearly there’s always going to be some setbacks within that.”

McDonald pointed out several players of the ODI team have crucial Test campaigns against India and Sri lanka before the Champions Trophy. He added Australia were still looking for their best form going into last year’s ODI World Cup in India before lifting the trophy.

“It’s the nature of one-day cricket,” he said. “We didn’t have the greatest prep leading into the World Cup either, and a lot of the things you do tend to come together at the last minute leading into those world events.

“Clearly we’ve got to tune things up for Perth, we’ve been challenged in different ways and we have to respond.

“Yes we’re trying to connect between now and the Champions Trophy by having a look at certain things, but we’ve got a Test summer (against India) we’ve got to combat through then off to Sri Lanka with a great challenge there.”

With levelling the series 1-1, Australia will be playing the third and final ODI on November 10 at Optus Stadium.

    0
    IPL Mumbai Indians

MI Target Players: With a total of INR 75 Crore having been used for the retention, Mumbai will be moving into the mega auction with a remaining purse value of INR 45 Crore.

According to the new IPL 2025 retention rules released by BCCI, each team can retain six players from their existing squad via retention or the Right to Match (RTM) option.

As Mumbai retained five of the players from the previous year’s squad, Mumbai can buy one player using the Right to Match (RTM) card option during the IPL 2025 mega auction.

    1. Yuzvendra Chahal
    2. Quinton de Kock
    3. Nehal Wadhera
    4. Jitesh Sharma
    5. Phil Salt

    Yuzvendra Chahal

After being released by Rajasthan Royals ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, the leg spinner will be the one of the key buy for any team in the upcoming auction.

Being the highest wicket taker in the IPL history, Chahal is only bowler to have more than 200 IPL wickets.

    Nehal Wadhera

The 24 year old joined in 2023 and was impressive with 241 runs in 14 games at a strike rate of 145. He played six games and score 109 runs during the IPL 2024 season where the side finished the leage at the bottom of the points table.

Being effective against both spin and pace, he has good temperament and can be used as a floater anywhere in the line-up.

    Quinton de Kock

Being a consistent performer in the IPL, de Kock has been part of the Lucknow Super Giants since 2022. Despite being under performed during the last season, he will be chased by number of teams because of his consistent performance and skill set.

Mumbai might consider de Kock as a overseas wk-keeper along with Jitesh Sharma or Phil Salt. Previously, he has played for Mumbai few seasons and has been the highest run scorer for the 2019 season where the side clinched a title.

    Jitesh Sharma

Jitesh Sharma has been impressive in the IPL for Punjab Kings. Being released by the team ahead of the auction, might be targeted by the five time champions due to their good track of Indian young players. He could be a good option for MI as a wk-batter.

    Phil Salt

Phil Salt is a young talented batsman who can open the innings. Being a poweful hitter and keep wickets, he might be a good option for MI as an overseas player.

The England land international was part of the squad for the opening wicket and helped KKR to swashbucking start in IPL 2024.

These are just talented players that the five times champions could target at the IPL 2025 auction. The team will need to be careful in their selection and ensure that they build a balanced squad so far that can compete for the title.

The team has a good record of identifying and nurturing young players and will be looking to sign some young players who could be the future of the team.

Ahead of the auction, Mumbai Indians has retained five players out of six retentions allowed for a franchise and will be likely to use the One RTM card option during the event.

IPL 2025 Retained Players List MI

    1. Jasprit Bumrah – INR 18 Cr
    2. Suryakumar Yadav – INR 16.35 Cr
    3. Hardik Pandya – INR 16.35 Cr
    4. Rohit Sharma – INR 16.30 Cr

The IPL governing council has confirmed that the mega auction will be held in November 24 and 25 at Jeddah. Despite the event being hosted overseas, IPL fans can still enjoy the IPL 2025 auction live streaming from their home.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi Asserts Pakistan’s Stance on Hosting Champions Trophy Amid Tensions with India

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has firmly stated that Pakistan is “not prepared to accept” a hybrid model for the Champions Trophy, maintaining that the country plans to host the entire tournament within its borders. Speaking to media at the Gaddafi Stadium, which is being renovated ahead of the tournament, Naqvi noted that no official objections from the BCCI have been communicated to the PCB regarding India’s participation in Pakistan.

Naqvi’s comments reflect a stronger stance than previously taken by the PCB on India’s rumored reluctance to travel to Pakistan. “In recent months, Indian media has reported that India will not travel to Pakistan. Our position is clear: if India has concerns, they should provide them in writing. So far, we have not discussed any hybrid model and do not intend to accept one,” Naqvi said.

Naqvi highlighted Pakistan’s goodwill towards India, mentioning Pakistan’s participation in the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, despite India opting out of the Asia Cup in Pakistan. He stated, “Pakistan has shown gestures of friendship in the past, but we cannot guarantee these will continue if India refuses to come for the Champions Trophy.”

Naqvi clarified that any decision regarding Pakistan’s participation in future events in India would ultimately be made by the government, not the PCB.

Reflecting on the broader impact of politics on sports, Naqvi emphasized, “Cricket and other sports should remain free of politics. If there are political tensions, they should not affect sporting events.”

The PCB has proposed Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Karachi as venues for the Champions Trophy, offering to host all of India’s matches in Lahore for logistical convenience and security. The PCB also announced its readiness to facilitate up to 17,000 visas for Indian fans, aiming to make the tournament accessible for traveling supporters.

Naqvi noted strong international support for hosting the Champions Trophy in Pakistan, stating, “Almost every country is in favor of Pakistan hosting. We’re committed to providing top-notch facilities for all teams and hope to see international fans attend the event.”

The BCCI, meanwhile, has not formally discussed its stance with the Indian government. The board awaits government guidance on whether to approve the trip to Pakistan for the tournament, scheduled from February 19 to March 9, though the ICC has yet to confirm the official schedule.

The BGT Test Series will be a crucial decider for Team India’s chances to stay in contention for the World Test Championship.

Team India appeared confident about winning the home Test series, but the outcome was completely unexpected in the end. India suffered a 3-0 series defeat against New Zealand at home as the black caps sealed a 25-run win in Mumbai.

Australian captain Pat Cummins revealed the reason behind the Aussies’ failure in the second ODI which Pakistan won by nine wickets said “There was a bit seam around there“.

A total of three ODIs were scheduled to be played during the Pakistan tour of Australia 2024. The hosts won the first game by 2 wickets and took the lead in the three-match ODI series.

Pakistan won the do-or-die match played at Adelaide and levelled the series. With the victory, Pakistan still have a chance to win the series. Pakistan bowlers who exhibited an impressive performance in the first ODI continued their momentum in the second game.

Pakistan contained the hosts for 163 runs in the first inning and chased the target with ease. Haris Rauf was awarded the player of the match for his impressive five-wicket haul.

Following a defeat in the second ODI, Australian captain Pat Cummins said “Wasn’t one of our best days. They bowled well, but we should have done better and scored more than 160. There was a bit seam around there.

We tried to attack (with some close-in fielders) but it wasn’t to be. I will leave it to him (Inglis), he has some experience. So let him be him. We have a week at home. Good training sessions needed, mind now switches to the red ball (for the upcoming Test series vs India).

Speaking of the match, Pakistan won the toss and opted to bowl first where Matthew Short and Jake Fraser-McGurk opened the inning on behalf of Australia. Pakistan bowlers exhibited an aggressive attack since the first ball of the innings.

Australia struggled to withstand the Pakistan pace attack and lost wickets in a regular intervals. Shaheen Afridi made the first wicket by dismissing Fraser-McGurk for 13 and soon struck back in the seventh over and dismissed Short for 19.

After losing the openers before reaching the 50 runs mark, Aussie batters might planned to move the inning in a steady manner. But Pakistan bowers with their impressive bowling ability gave no room for the hosts to build a partnership.

Steven Smith’s 35 off 48 is the highest individual score by an Australian player in this match. Haris Rauf played a crucial role in Pakistan’s successful bowling attack as the pacer bagged five wickets for 29 runs in the eight overs he bowled.

On the other hand, Australian bowlers failed to replicate the hosts’ bowling performances and struggled to bag a wicket. Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique made a 100-run stand for the first wicket in the 163-run target game.

Zampa dismissed Ayub for 82 runs when Pakistan scored 137 runs. With Abdullah Shafique’s unbeaten 64, Pakistan reached the target in 26.3 overs and won the game by nine wickets.
