“I’m Really Excited” Ben Stokes on McCullum’s White-ball Appointment

The England test captain Ben Stokes has expressed his excitement saying that the New Zealander’s partnership with captain Jos Buttler in the White-ball format could be beneficial for the team.

ECB has announced McCullum has been named as England’s White ball coach and will combine the roles with his red-ball format from the start of 2025 as a part of a new three-year deal until 2027.

Since assuming the red-ball role in May 2022, McCullum has been successful with the side and has overseen a shift in culture and results. Under his guidance, England has won 19 out of 28 Tests with an adapting ‘bazball’ approach.

That in turn produced six series victories out of nine, with just one defeat, away from India at the start of this year. England’s white-ball setup has struggled in the ODI World Cup 2023 and T20 World Cup 2024 after securing ICC titles in the 2019 ODI World Cup and 2022 T20 World Cup.

The failures have made Matthew Mott has stepped down from the role in July. With Brendon McCullum taking over the head coach position across all formats, England will adapt Bazball for all formats.

While speaking about McCullum’s appointment, Ben Stokes said, “I was very surprised by the news.”

“First and foremost, I think it’s an unbelievable move for English cricket to go back to having a coach in charge of all the teams. You look at what Baz has achieved with the Test side, it’s been amazing.

“I’m really excited for the white-ball team to have the opportunity to be able to work with Baz, listen to him speak, his opinions. How his outlook on life reflects cricket, if that makes sense.

“I think Jos is going to really, really enjoy having him as his coach to work with. And you look at all the new faces who are coming into that white-ball team now, I couldn’t think of a better person for them to come in and work under at the international level for the first time.

“He just gives everyone the platform to go out and enjoy themselves. That doesn’t always necessarily mean it’s going to reflect on your performances, but Baz never puts any added pressure on anybody’s shoulders whatsoever so far.

“If there was any selfishness, selfishness within me, I would be saying ‘no, please don’t’. But I’m an English fan, I’m an England cricket fan and I couldn’t think of a better person to be appointed to be the new coach of the white-ball team as well.”

Stokes admitted making the first test against Pakistan which begins on October 07 and continues to recover from a left hamstring picked up while playing in the Hundred 2024.

Meanwhile, Ollie Pope took over the test captaincy and led the side to victory in the test series against Sri Lanka.

Though making significant progress so far, Stokes and the ECB medical team are not taking anything for granted.

“The recurrence rate of these injuries is 50%, which is quite high,” Stokes explained.

“I’d rather take an extra two weeks than run the risk of potentially doing something worse and then putting myself out of the game for longer. I’m just making sure that I’m doing everything right and everything I possibly can to try and give myself a chance to be fit for that first Test.

“I got told straight away that, within a couple of days, you’ll feel good as gold. That doesn’t mean that it’s healed. So you have to be careful.

“I’ve stayed around the team because I wanted to be here, but as well, so I’m around the medical team every day. Because anything that I can do, even if it gives me a chance of being back three or four days earlier than initially thought, it’s done its job.

“Rehab with hamstrings is incredibly boring, I’ve found out. It’s the first one I’ve done and I can’t really do that much except walk around. I’ve just started doing some double-leg stuff so I can load my left leg now,” concluded Stokes.

England will play their third test against Sri Lanka on September 06 at The Oval.

The former Indian coach Rahul Dravid is set to return as Rajasthan Royal head coach before the IPL 2025 season.

Following his end of tenure as India’s coach after the T20 World Cup 2024 win in June this year. Dravid recently signed a deal with the franchise and had conversations on player retentions ahead of the upcoming mega auction.

He has a long-standing working relationship with the RR captain Sanju Samson, who came through the U-19 on Dravid’s watch.

Dravid has served as the captain in IPL 2012, and 2013 and also served as team director and mentor in the 2014 and 2015 seasons. In 2016, Dravid moved to Delhi Daredevils until he became the head of the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru in 2019.

In 2021, he was appointed as Indian men’s head coach and ended his three-year stint by winning the T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies.

Rajasthan is also likely to sign former Indian batter Vikram Rathour as the batting coach. the former India selector was part of Dravid’s coaching staff at NCA before he became India’s batting coach in 2019.

Dravid will take charge of Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, while Kumar Sangakkara who has been the director of cricket since 2021 will continue with their franchise and look after the teams in other leagues – Paarl Royals in SA20 and Barbados Royals in the CPL.

Rajasthan Royals has never won the IPL title since their inaugural season in 2008. They have reached the finals once in the 2022 season where they came up as runners with a defeat against Gujarat Titans.

They failed to make it to the finals in the 2023 season and played in the playoffs before being knocked out in Qualifier 2.

Ishan Kishan likely to Miss First Duleep Trophy Game

Ishan Kishan
Ishan Kishan (image: X)

The WK-batter Ishan Kishan is unlikely for a match beginning for the Duleep trophy in 2024 in Anantapur on Thursday.

With the reason for Kishan’s withdrawal unclear, some reports suggest that the left-hander might be carrying an injury. Kishan’s participation in the later stages of the four-day FC tournament remains unknown at the moment.

It will also be subject to his availability for Indian team selection for the two-match test series against Bangladesh. However, there is a possibility he could feature in the later stages of the six-match tournament.

Each team will play three matches and Team D’s second match will be played against Team A starting on September 12 in Anatapur.

Kishan represented Jharkhand in the ongoing Buchi Babu tournament 2024 in Chennai, but played only two games as his side could not proceed beyond the league stage. He played two matches against Madhya Pradesh and Hyderabad where the side won the first and second games before being knocked out.

Ishan Kishan
Ishan Kishan(Image: BCCI)

In the second match, played at India Cement Ground in Shankar Nagar in Chennai, Kishan scored 1 and 5 runs in the two innings before his team was eliminated.

Ishan Kishan scored a century in the first innings and remained unbeaten by 41 runs in the second. Last season, Kishan was sidelined by the national selectors on disciplinary grounds after he skipped a few Ranji Trophy matches. Due to his actions, he was snubbed out of the BCCI’s central contract for the 2024 season.

The cricket board stated that he will be considered for national selection only after he plays for his state team. Kishan may have played in the Buchi Babu tournament, but the red-ball competition is not recognized as a national competition.

His inclusion in the Duleep Trophy mix may be suggestive that the selectors have begun the loosen the conditions against him and it remains unknown how they will now view his last-minute withdrawal.

Ishan Kishan could join Suryakumar Yadav in missing the multiday red-ball competition. The India T20I captain suffered a hand injury during the Buchi Babu tournament and is currently undergoing treatment at the NCA in Bengaluru.

Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Siraj have already withdrawn from the competition for different reasons. Ajay Ratra, the newly appointed BCCI selector will have to start work with immediate effect.

He has been assigned the Duleep Trophy matches in Anantapur where a couple of selectors will also be there. Two selectors will be in Bengaluru for Team A vs Team B before the five-member committee convenes in Anantapur for the remainder of the tournament.

“When You Bowl” Ajith Ram Eyes to Shine for Tamil Nadu in Ranji Trophy

The Bowler Ajith Ram has opened up on his love for bowling long spells and revealed to continuing his brilliant form for Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy season.

Ajith picked up four wickets in 42 overs in two days versus Chhattisgarh in the Buchi Babu tournament semi-finals where the wicket offered no help to spinners.

He dismissed four batters conceding 109 runs for TNCA Xl at NPR College Cricket Ground. “In general, wherever I play, I love bowling a lot. The way I look at it, long spells mean a lot of opportunities to pick up wickets. I enjoy doing it,” said on Tuesday.

Tamil Nadu Cricket Team

He said that he likes to keep bowling to plot a batter’s dismissal. He also prised out Shashank Chandrakar in just 10 deliveries with the new ball on the first day, the dismissal gives an understanding of his learning.

Chandrakar swept the ball for a six and four on the square leg boundary in Ajith’s first over. So, in his next over, Ajith darted in a short and just outside off delivery. The batter, playing for the turn, went on the back foot to cut the ball, which hit his back pad to get dismissed on lbw.

“Since I was bowling with the new ball, I tried to bowl cautiously to see what he does. When he hit those two sweeps, I got the idea that he was going to take me on.

“Since he was sweeping easily on the stump line, I thought I’d bowl it outside the stump line. I had bowled the previous two deliveries (before the dismissal) a bit slower. So, I tried to see what he does when I bowled it a bit quicker.”

“I thought maybe he’ll go for the sweep again and I’ll get an lbw opportunity. I bowled it just short and because of that, the ball got a lot of time to sharply go in as well. Also, since it was a new ball, it went in sharper than I expected,” he said.

Ajith Ram was the joint second-most wicket taker in the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy picking 41 wickets in 13 innings. He is the leading wicket-taker after five rounds in the TNCA first-division cricket league with 32 wickets for Globe Trotters SC.

“Extremely Disappointed” Shan Masood on Series Defeat in Second Bangladesh Test

Shan Masood

The Pakistan test captain Shan Masood has opened on the side’s defeat in the second test of the Bangladesh tour of Pakistan 2024.

Following the series defeat 2-0 at home, he opened on the long-term solutions to emphasize the need for Pakistan to play more red-ball cricket. He also admitted that his side tended to keep making the same mistakes.

Pakistan has been facing back-to-back defeats in the last five tests. They lost a test series 3-0 against Austalia played last December 2023 and January 2024. They hoped to get back on track with the Bangladesh series but failed putting them in a tough situation. Pakistan has slipped to 8th position in the WTC points table.

While speaking in the post-match conference Shan Masood said, “Extremely disappointed, we were excited for the home season. The story has been the same as Australia, we have not learned our lessons.”

“We thought we were playing good cricket in Australia but not doing the job, that’s something we need to work on. It has happened 4 times in my tenure that we have left the team back into the contest when we were dominating. I think Test cricket demands something else in terms of fitness.”

“We played 4 fast bowlers in the first Test and the reason was we thought the workload would be too much for three people to manage. And that was proved in this game when we lost a fast bowler in each innings.”

“I think even in this Test match, having just 3 bowlers and 2 spinners was less, we could have done with another pacer. 274 was a good score in the first innings, me and Saim could have got more runs like Litton. But we should have done better from having them at 26/6.”

“That’s something we need to work on and work on quickly. It isn’t all doom and gloom, there are always learnings. We got Shaheen and Naseem back in the fold, Shaheen has played consistently for a year across formats and we can’t keep throwing him in the deep end.”

“But we need to get fitter, neater, and prepare better. It is going to be a long Test and domestic season and we need to be better prepared for England,” he concluded.

Pakistan bowler’s injuries and misfiring with the bat led the side to suffer a 2-0 defeat on the home ground.

Brendon McCullum Named as England’s White Ball Head Coach

Brendon McCullum
Brendon McCullum (image: X)

Brendon McCullum has been announced as England’s White ball head coach and will combine the role with red-ball cricket duties. He had a brilliant career and agreed a three-year deal with ECB.

The contract extension was revealed on Tuesday Brendon McCullum is set to guide the side for the ODI World Cup 2027 and also the test side through England’s next home Ashes campaign.

While speaking about his new role, McCullum said, “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Test team, and I’m excited to extend my role to include the white-ball sides.”

“This new challenge is something I’m ready to embrace, and I’m eager to work closely with Jos [Buttler] and the team to build on the strong foundations that are already in place.”

“Rob Key’s vision for the future of English cricket is something that really resonated with me. The idea of a unified coaching structure, especially with the schedule easing next year, made perfect sense.”

“I’m energized by the prospect of guiding both teams and am grateful for the support from the ECB and my family as I take on these added responsibilities,” said Brendon McCullum.

“The talent within English cricket is immense, and I’m looking forward to helping these players reach their full potential. My goal is to create an environment where everyone can thrive and where we can continue to compete at the highest level across all formats,” he concluded.

He will be taking over the white ball role in January 2025, starting with England’s tour of India. Meanwhile, Marcus will be the interim whiteball coach for the upcoming Australia tour of England later this month. With the England squads announced for the tour, the side will start preparing for the white-ball series starting on September 11.

While speaking about the appointment of the McCullum, Rob Key said, “I’m delighted that Brendon has chosen to do both roles now with England.”

“I believe we are incredibly fortunate that a coach of his quality is prepared to commit wholeheartedly to English cricket. Being able to align all teams now is particularly exciting and we look forward to taking on all challenges that come our way.

“For the last two years, constant clashes between formats have made it challenging for the white-ball environment; fortunately, these are easing starting from January.

“The timing of the schedule (from January) will allow him to dedicate the necessary focus to both roles, and we’re confident this restructure will bring out the best in our players and coaching staff.”

ECB also confirmed that McCullum will head to New Zealand for a short break after the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka. He will be returning for England’s tour of Pakistan in October and New Zealand in December.

“Believed in myself”, Litton Das on winning POTM award in second test vs Pakistan

Wicketkeeper batter Litton Das who played a crucial role in Bangladesh’s series victory against Pakistan reveals the motive behind his match-winning knock in the first inning.

During the Bangladesh tour of Pakistan 2024, a total of two tests were scheduled to be played between August 21 and September 3 in Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi. Bangladesh who never won a test game against Pakistan registered a series victory by beating Pakistan in the two test games.

Bangladesh took the lead by winning the first test by 10 wickets and went on to win the second test by 6 wickets.

Litton Das in the second test scored an impressive 138 when the visitors were six wickets down for just 26. With his 100-plus crucial runs, Bangladesh finished their first inning with a score of 262 which is just 12 runs behind Pakistan’s first-inning score.

Apart from Das, Bangladesh bowlers also played an outstanding inning. Mehidy Hasan Miraz bagged a five-wicket haul in the first inning while Hasan Mahmud bagged a five-wicket haul in the second inning.

With an effective contribution from Taskin Ahmed and Nahid Rana, Bangladesh won the second and last test of the series and scripted history by whitewashing Pakistan in the two-match test series in Pakistan.

For his exceptional inning in the second test, Litton Das was awarded the Player of the Match Award.

While receiving the award, Litton Das said “Just believed in myself, Pakistan bowled well in that spell but me and Miraz wanted to just bat long. He hit a four and a six and then the momentum shifted. When Hasan came, I didn’t have many scoring opportunities, so I took time and wanted to play as many overs as possible. Credit to Hasan as well for batting really well”.

“I like keeping in Tests, that is my role and when I do well behind the wicket, the team does well too. When we came here, things back home weren’t up to the mark, but we came here and practiced hard”.

“It is all about team effort, credit to all and the coaching staff. Not easy playing in this kind of heat”.

Speaking of the game, winning the toss, Bangladesh opted to bowl first while Shafique and Saim Ayub opened the batting attack for Pakistan. Taskin Ahmed who replaced injured Shoriful for the 2nd test made an impressive start in the first inning by dismissing Shafique for a duck in the very first over.

Following his dismissal, Masood and Saim Ayub made a 107-run stand and pushed Pakistan towards a better side. Hasan Miraz broke the 100-plus runs partnership by dismissing the Pakistan captain for 57 runs. Following his dismissal, Pakistan lost their wicket in regular intervals and failed to build a massive partnership.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz with his five wickets haul bundled Pakistan for 274 runs in the first inning. Bangladesh on the other hand made a dreadful start in their first inning by losing six wickets for 26 runs.

While Bangladesh was considered to be finished, Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz made a 165-run stand for the seventh wicket and pushed Bangladesh towards a better position. With Das’ 138, Bangladesh scored 262 runs for 10 wickets loss which is far better compared to their 26 for six.

Pakistan in their second inning failed to make an impressive start, and continued their failures throughout the inning and managed to score 172 runs. In the second inning, Hasan Mahmud bagged five wickets while Nahid Rana bagged four wickets and helped Bangladesh to contain Pakistan for a low score.

On the other hand, Bangladesh chased the target with six wickets remaining and registered a historic win. 185 by Bangladesh is their third-highest successful chase behind 215 vs West Indies in St George’s in 2009 and 191 vs Sri Lanka in Colombo PSS in 2017.

Pakistan have now gone ten Tests at home without a win (six defeats and four draws) – the longest such run for a team in home games except Zimbabwe and Bangladesh in the current century.

Bangladesh under Najmul Hossain Shanto registered a historic series win by whitewashing Pakistan in the two-match test series.

Notably, this is only the second instance of Pakistan losing all Tests in a home rubber since losing 0-3 to England in 2022/23. Pakistan has now lost a Test series at home to each of the ten oldest full-member teams – only the second side to suffer the ignominy after Bangladesh.
