“We Strive to Play” Rishabh Pant Statement Ahead of Duleep Trophy

The Indian wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant has provided a warning ahead of the two-match test series against Bangladesh and also said that they want to play with the same intensity.

He also mentioned the need for India to keep improving themselves to stay ahead of the competition. Bangladesh who recently secured a history win against Pakistan 2-0 at Rawalpindi, will be facing Rohit Sharma-led side in the first test at Chennai starting on September 19.

India has a total of 10 tests in the home season 2024-25 starting with the Bangladesh series, followed by three tests against New Zealand and five tests Border Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.

“Asian countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka perform well in Asian conditions because they are accustomed to the wickets,” Pant told Jio Cinema.

“As the Indian cricket team, we focus solely on our own standards and how we can improve. Regardless of the opposition, we strive to play with the same intensity and give our 100 percent every single day,” he said.

Rishabh Pant stated that no series can be taken lightly with the margins between the teams decreasing in international cricket.

“Pressure will always be there because, in international cricket, you can’t take any series lightly. The margin between winning and losing is very small, and nowadays, the gap between international teams isn’t much either,” he said.

Pant said playing in the Duleep Trophy matches got underway here at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and at Anantapur on Thursday.

“It is very important for us to play domestic cricket because as a cricketer, match practice is always very important,” he said.

“Especially coming back to domestic cricket, the youngsters also learn a lot of things from us — they see you playing here even after playing international cricket. There is a lot to give back to domestic cricket.”

“It also gives us the opportunity to share all the learning and experiences from international cricket with our colleagues, especially with the young players and newcomers; it gives them a huge boost since we all have reached here from playing domestic cricket,” Pant added.

Pant who plays for Team B in the Duleep Trophy said he is looking forward to playing in domestic cricket as this will be his first red-ball game after his car accident in December 2022.

“It is an amazing feeling for me, also because when I met with the accident two years ago, I used to always think about when I will be able to play for India again,” he said.

“In the last six months, I (have) played IPL and we (have) also won the World Cup. It’s a great feeling as I had always dreamt of winning the World Cup since I was a kid,” he concluded.

Jos Buttler has been ruled out of England’s T20I home series against Australia and could also miss the five-match ODI series. Meanwhile Phil Salt will be taking captaincy in the T20s.

The ODI captain Jos Buttler sustained an injury while preparing for the men’s hundred, which ruled him out of the tournament. He had targeted to return to action for Lancashire’s Vitality Blast quarter-final against Sussex on Wednesday night for a comeback ahead of the white ball series, which begins at the Utilita Bowl on September 11.

But he could miss the rest of the summer having not played any cricket since England’s T20 World Cup semi-final defeat to India on June 27. Phil salt experience came while deputizing for Buttler as Manchester Originals captain during the Hundred, will take the reins and will be the wicketkeeper.

Harry Brook has been Ollie Pope’s deputy during Sri Lanka’s tour of England 2024 and will be leading the 50-over leg of Australia’s tour.

Surrey All-rounder Jamie Overton has been called in as the replacement for England’s squad for the T20 format. However, he is selected to play as a specialist batter as he continues his recovery from a back stress fracture. Jordan Cox is currently involved with a test series against Sri Lanka and will be added to the ODI squad as cover.

“Surrey all-rounder Jamie Overton has been called up as a replacement in the T20 squad. The three-match IT20 series is set to begin next week at the Utilita Bowl, Southampton, on 11 September 2024. Additionally, Essex batter Jordan Cox has been added to the ODI squad as cover,” the ECB said in a statement.

Jos Buttler will be clear on returning to action along with newly appointed White-ball coach Brendon McCullum taking over in January for the Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan.

Marcus Trescothick will continue to oversee England’s white-ball duties in the limited-overs series against Australia and a tour of the Caribbean in November. The first match of the T20I series will be played on September 11 at The Ageas Bowl.

England Men’s IT20 Squad: Phil Salt, Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Jordan Cox, Sam Curran, Josh Hull, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Saqib Mahmood, Dan Mousley, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Reece Topley, John Turner.

England Men’s ODI Squad: Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Jordan Cox, Ben Duckett, Josh Hull, Will Jacks, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Jamie Smith, Reece Topley, John Turner

Matthew Mott Appointed as Sydney Sixers Assistant Coach

Matthew Mott (image: X)

The former England White-ball head coach Matthew Mott has signed a three-year deal with Sydney Sixers replacing Cameron White who joined Melbourne Renegades ahead of BBL 2025.

He joined as the assistant coach for the Big Bash franchise after his departure as head coach of the England Men’s White-ball team.

Mott has already worked with Australian women for eight years before linking up with England and will link up with Greg Shipperd at Sixers.

“I’m delighted to join back up with the Sydney Sixers,” Mott said. “Having started my coaching journey in Sydney many years ago, it’s a place that evokes both great memories and a comforting sense of familiarity, which I’m looking forward to.

“The idea of being an assistant to Greg Shipperd, who I have a tremendous amount of respect for, really appealed to me.”

Mott’s coaching career in England started brightly when they won the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, but the side suffered a defeat after a semi-final exit at the tournament earlier this year which followed a poor performance in ODI World Cup 2023.

His coaching career started with New South Wales men’s in 2007. His return will see him reunited with Rachael Haynes who was one of the key members of Australia.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to have Motty committed for the next three years with the club,” Haynes, Sixers’ general manager, said.”When the opportunity arises to bring a coach of Motty’s calibre into your ranks, it’s a no-brainer. We know what a fantastic resource he will be for our playing group.

“It goes without saying that his coaching resume speaks for itself. He has an incredible track record of success around the world, and he’s proven he knows what it takes to build, and sustain, a winning culture.

“Our club is in safe hands under the leadership of Greg Shipperd, and Charlotte Edwards in our women’s program, and we’re delighted to be able to add Motty’s experience to that group, taking us forward.”

The Sixers retained James Vince in the BBL draft last week and also brought in Yorkshire spinner Jafer Chohan as their last pick. They have secured West Indies left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein ahead of the draft.

Nathan Lyon Suggests Three Match Series for WTC Finals

0
Nathan Lyon

The Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon who was one key performer in Australia’s WTC victory last year, has suggested playing WTC finals in multi-match format.

The Australian spinner believes would more accurately capture the essence of Test cricket in a single-match affair.

“One thing I would like to see, I’d like to see the World Test Championship Final potentially in a three-match series. That may become a little bit better because you potentially can lose a Test match in one session where [in a three-match series] it may allow teams to bounce back and show their dominance and win 3-0.”

“We’re pretty time-poor anyway and that’s going to be a challenge but that’s one thing I would change,” said Lyon.

Lyon elaborated the idea saying the matches could be in India, Australia, and England. “You potentially could go one in England, one in India, one in Australia, so you have all different conditions, but obviously, the timing of that changes everything.”

“I don’t think we’re going to get on the MCG in the middle of August, just putting it out there.”

India reached the WTC finals twice and has been the runner after suffering defeats to New Zealand and Australia in both seasons. India is currently on the top of the WTC points table with 6 wins on 9 matches and one step too close making it to the third final at Lord’s starting from June 11.

Nathan Lyon

Lyon emphasized that the World Test Championship format eliminates ‘dead rubbers’ in individual series ensuring that every match remains significant and competitive with every point being vital within the two-year cycle.

He also recalled the match against the West Indies in Brisbane earlier this year, where Australia suffered a defeat in a thrilling contest due to Shamar Joseph’s remarkable bowling performance.

“Oh, yeah. I’ll just say it’s [World Test Championship] the pinnacle for Test cricket. People say it’s sometimes a dead rubber when you turn 2-0 up in a three-match series or whatever it may be. But I feel like there’s no more dead rubbers.”

“I’ve never considered them dead rubbers, but there’s always points on offer now. You look at us last year losing against the West Indies at the Gabba hurt us a fair bit.”

Lyon regarded the WTC as the ultimate equivalent of a World Cup in Test cricket. “It’s not tournament play. You can’t just be scraping into the semi-finals and losing two games or whatnot. You’ve got to be consistent over the two years of the cycle,” said South Wales Nathan Lyon.

Currently, Australia is scheduled to play a five-match test series against India in the Border Gavaskar Trophy starting in November this year. The five-match series could have a significant impact on the table.

BCCI Reveals Reason for Ishan Kishan’s Absence on Duleep Trophy

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has revealed the reason for Ishan Kishan’s absence from the Duleep Trophy 2024.

The cricket board has ruled out Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, and Prasidh Krishna for the opening round of the tournament which marks the beginning of the red-ball season in domestic cricket.

During the pre-season invitational tournament, the wk-batter is looking for a comeback to the Indian test since withdrawing from the South Africa Test series in December 2023. He also missed the BCCI central contracts in February after missing the Ranji Trophy and picked up an injury as revealed by BCCI.

“Wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan has been ruled out of the first round of the Duleep Trophy due to a groin injury sustained during the ongoing All-India Buchi Babu Tournament. The BCCI Medical Team is closely monitoring his condition and working towards ensuring a swift recovery,” said BCCI.

Sanju Samson who has been not part of the 61 players for the opening round of the Duleep Trophy has been announced as Ishan’s replacement in the India D Squad.

India star batter Suryakumar Yadav has been ruled out for the first round of the 2024-25 Duleep Trophy to nurse his hand injury. He had made his intention clear of adding his Test appearance since making his debut in the format in the home series against Australia in February 2023.

The India T20I skipper featured in only one match for Mumbai Cricket Association against TNCA Xl in Coimbatore.

The BCCI medical team is currently assessing his injury and a further assessment next week will determine his availability for the second round.

Meanwhile Prasidh Krishna has not completed rehab following his surgery for his left Quadriceps and will miss the Duleep Trophy’s first round game. All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy has been cleared to play and will be available for selection.

“When I’m Done Playing” Ben Stokes on his Post Retirement Plans

Ben Stokes on Ashes 2023

England Test captain Ben Stokes has revealed his plan after he retired from cricket. The 33-year-old, Stokes is in the prime of his career and has been a stalwart for England in the long format.

Stokes made his international debut in 2013 and has been part of the ODI World Cup 2019 and T20 World Cup 2022 winning teams. He was also named as England’s Test captain and has lost only one series since 2022.

“I can’t see myself being someone who when the day comes when I do stop playing, I’ll just not be involved with cricket. I do see myself probably wanting to go down the route of being a coach. I think that’s just with my love for the game. When I’m done playing, I’d love to be able to try and affect a few people’s careers,” told Stokes.

Furthermore, Stokes also spoke about his participation in the Champions Trophy in 2025 and revealed his excitement about being part of the event.

“It’s hard to turn down those sorts of big events, isn’t it? If I didn’t play another white-ball game, I’d be very content with how many games I’ve played and what I’ve been able to achieve.”

Ben Stokes
Ben Stokes (image: X)

“I don’t know what the plan is going forward, whether they see me being a part of that or not. I’m sure there’ll be some conversation at some point about that. And I’ll be happy either way,” he said.

Ben Stokes has retired from ODIs but returned to the format ahead of the 2023 World Cup where he did not bowl. With England focusing on next year’s Ashes, the star cricketer suggested that they will go in with a fresh mindset.

“I don’t think we’ll be heading there with that feeling of, ‘Oh, we’ve got unfinished business because of the last time. Every Ashes series is its own event, its own occasion. It’s just giving ourselves the best opportunity to be able to pick a squad that we think is going to give us the best chance of winning out in Australia. We definitely know what we want.”

“When it comes to Australia, we’re basically not leaving any stone unturned. That doesn’t mean we’re going to win it. We’re going out there to hopefully win, but it’s just about picking the 15 or 16 blokes to give us the best chance of winning,” he concluded.

Ben Stokes is currently undergoing rehabilitation after picking a hamstring injury while Playing in The Hundred 2024. Ben Stokes is not playing in the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka due to an injury but hopes to return for the Test series in England tour of Pakistan in 2024.

Travis Head Shines as Australia Shatters World Records in 1st T20I vs Scotland

0
Travis Head

The Opening batter Travis Head helped the side shatter multiple T20I records during the first T20I match of Australia’s tour of Scotland 2024.

Head equaled the record for the fastest half-century by an Australian men’s batter as the side secured a seven-wicket victory. He brought his half-century in just 17 balls. He scored 80 runs in 25 balls including 12 fours and five sixes where 78 runs came from boundaries.

Australia lost debutant Jake Fraser McGurk early in the first over of their run chase, but that didn’t stop Head and Marsh from attacking the hosts at every opportunity as they scored 113 runs in the powerplay.

It was the second-highest powerplay score in the T20I history when Romania scored 116 runs managed against Serbia in Sofia in 2021. Meanwhile, Sean Abbott picked three wickets while Xavier Bartlett and Adam Zampa picked two each.

Australia now leads the series 1-0 and Head said he wants to continue the attack on Friday.

While speaking at the post-match conference, Head said, “Obviously they (Scotland) are keen as (for the contest) and so are we. We want to start on the right foot,” Head said.

“We’ve got a couple of young guys in our team, a bit of a fresher group off the back of the T20 World Cup and I think everyone is keen to make a stance in international cricket.”

Meanwhile, Scotland captain Richie Berrington said that they were disappointed with the efforts from his side and are hoping to see them bounce back during the remainder of the series.

“We’re disappointed with how things ended up today, but it’s a great experience, especially for the younger guys who’ve come in,” Berrington said.

“We’ve got to learn from every experience, keep our belief, and come back strong for the next one.”

The second match of the T20I series will be played on September 06 at The Grange Cricket Club.

Josh Hull Named in England’s Playing 11 for 3rd Test against Sri Lanka

0
Josh Hull
Josh Hull (image: X)

The left-hand seamer Josh Hull will make his England debut in their third test on the Sri Lanka tour of England 2024 which begins on September 06.

He will be replacing Matthew Potts in England’s squad which won in the second test on 190 runs difference at Lord’s to secure a series win 2-0.

Hull was considered as a replacement for injured Mark Wood who was ruled out due to thigh injury. He has picked 11 wickets in nine County Championship appearances for Leicestershire, but his physical attributes piqued the interest of England’s management and he took match figures 5 for 74 on England Lions debut last month.

Josh Hull was named in England’s squad to face Australia later this month. With his involvement in the third test, he will likely miss the first T20I match against Australia.

Ollie Pope who came in as a standby captain for the injured Ben Stokes spoke about his height saying, “When you’re 6ft 7in and you can get it down pushing up to the 85-90mph mark, and with a bit of swing with the left-arm angle, there’s a lot to like about it,” Pope said.

“It’s a really exciting week for him. With the height, you can draw in some more edges with that extra bounce,” he explained.

“It makes it a lot harder to drive the ball, especially if there is a little bit of bounce at The Oval – which there can be, especially early in the game.

“And then the angle… We’ve played four right-arm seamers for the first two games, so it’s just something different for the batters to think about in the opposition, with the ball coming into the right-hander, and obviously away from the left-hander, with that swing.”

“It’s a point of difference, and he’s got some good pace as well when he’s clicking in the nets.”

Hull will be the first left-arm seamer to play a test for England since Sam Curran in 2021, and only second since Ryan Sidebottom’s last test in 2010.

England Playing 11 for the third test against Sri Lanka: Dan Lawrence, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope (c), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jamie Smith (wk), Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Olly Stone, Josh Hull, Shoaib Bashir

“I’d Be Up To My Expectations” Shubman Gill Plans on Improving his Test Performance

0
Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill (image: X)

The Indian opener Shubman Gill is keen on improving his test career and is counting on a strengthening defense against spinners to make an impact in upcoming test matches in India’s home season 2024.

With many developments around Duleep Trophy 2024, Shubman Gill’s progress holds an important position. As the captain of the India A team, he holds the position of an important member of the senior men’s test team having taken over the No.3 spot.

Despite having struggled in the last test series against England in February 2024, Shubman Gill battled some difficult moments that fetched him some centuries and fifties.

Gill had an average of 35 over 25 test matches which is well supported by his FC average touches of 50.

“Yes, I’ve not been up to my own expectations ([n Test cricket],” said Gill. “But we have ten Tests coming up together. Hopefully, after these ten Tests end, I’d be up to my expectations or more,” he added.

Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill (image: X)

Having started as an opener in Test cricket, he earned the no.3 spot which called for a slightly different approach which has since been a work in progress.

Gill admits that the contrasting demands of white-ball cricket have played a part in the off-color returns in Test cricket but has been working on improving it.

“I worked on my defense a little bit more, especially against the spinners. Playing on turning tracks, you should be able to defend a lot more. Then you play scoring shots.”

“With more T20 and playing on batting-friendly tracks in the white ball, I feel it takes away a little from your defensive game over a period of time. So that was my focus during the England series,” he admits.

“Every match or every series you tend to learn more about yourself, whether you’re the captain or not. You tend to learn certain things about yourself, your game,” he said.

“More so if you’re captain, you tend to learn about other players as well. Because the captain needs to have a connection with the players. If you want someone to give their 100 percent, you should have a connection with the players.”

“You should know their weaknesses and strengths. In terms of that there has been some change, there has been a lot more conversations especially if you’re the captain or vice-captain you have one-on-one conversations with the players.

“There’s nothing easy or difficult. You’d have played a lot of age-group cricket with a lot of this player so there’s a lot of fun. And if you’re enjoying the captaincy role as well and to lead by performance as well. So if these things are in order, you’ll be enjoying everything,” he concluded.

Coming to the tests, India holds the top position in the WTC points table with Australia in the second. They will be playing in a five-match test series starting in November which is part of the WTC cycle and will the results have an impact on the rankings.

India’s home season 2024 starts with a two-match test series against Bangladesh on September 19 at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.

“I’m Really Excited” Ben Stokes on McCullum’s White-ball Appointment

0
Ben Stokes
Ben Stokes (image: X)

The England test captain Ben Stokes has expressed his excitement saying that the New Zealander’s partnership with captain Jos Buttler in the White-ball format could be beneficial for the team.

ECB has announced McCullum has been named as England’s White ball coach and will combine the roles with his red-ball format from the start of 2025 as a part of a new three-year deal until 2027.

Since assuming the red-ball role in May 2022, McCullum has been successful with the side and has overseen a shift in culture and results. Under his guidance, England has won 19 out of 28 Tests with an adapting ‘bazball’ approach.

That in turn produced six series victories out of nine, with just one defeat, away from India at the start of this year. England’s white-ball setup has struggled in the ODI World Cup 2023 and T20 World Cup 2024 after securing ICC titles in the 2019 ODI World Cup and 2022 T20 World Cup.

The failures have made Matthew Mott has stepped down from the role in July. With Brendon McCullum taking over the head coach position across all formats, England will adapt Bazball for all formats.

Brendon McCullum
Brendon McCullum (image: X)

While speaking about McCullum’s appointment, Ben Stokes said, “I was very surprised by the news.”

“First and foremost, I think it’s an unbelievable move for English cricket to go back to having a coach in charge of all the teams. You look at what Baz has achieved with the Test side, it’s been amazing.

“I’m really excited for the white-ball team to have the opportunity to be able to work with Baz, listen to him speak, his opinions. How his outlook on life reflects cricket, if that makes sense.

“I think Jos is going to really, really enjoy having him as his coach to work with. And you look at all the new faces who are coming into that white-ball team now, I couldn’t think of a better person for them to come in and work under at the international level for the first time.

“He just gives everyone the platform to go out and enjoy themselves. That doesn’t always necessarily mean it’s going to reflect on your performances, but Baz never puts any added pressure on anybody’s shoulders whatsoever so far.

“If there was any selfishness, selfishness within me, I would be saying ‘no, please don’t’. But I’m an English fan, I’m an England cricket fan and I couldn’t think of a better person to be appointed to be the new coach of the white-ball team as well.”

Stokes admitted making the first test against Pakistan which begins on October 07 and continues to recover from a left hamstring picked up while playing in the Hundred 2024.

Meanwhile, Ollie Pope took over the test captaincy and led the side to victory in the test series against Sri Lanka.

Though making significant progress so far, Stokes and the ECB medical team are not taking anything for granted.

“The recurrence rate of these injuries is 50%, which is quite high,” Stokes explained.

“I’d rather take an extra two weeks than run the risk of potentially doing something worse and then putting myself out of the game for longer. I’m just making sure that I’m doing everything right and everything I possibly can to try and give myself a chance to be fit for that first Test.

“I got told straight away that, within a couple of days, you’ll feel good as gold. That doesn’t mean that it’s healed. So you have to be careful.

“I’ve stayed around the team because I wanted to be here, but as well, so I’m around the medical team every day. Because anything that I can do, even if it gives me a chance of being back three or four days earlier than initially thought, it’s done its job.

“Rehab with hamstrings is incredibly boring, I’ve found out. It’s the first one I’ve done and I can’t really do that much except walk around. I’ve just started doing some double-leg stuff so I can load my left leg now,” concluded Stokes.

England will play their third test against Sri Lanka on September 06 at The Oval.
